One of my favorite restaurants, especially for Happy Hour. We got to check out their HH menu on a recent trip out to Davis. It's about the same as their other restaurants. I like to get a mix of rolls and hot food. I went for my old standards like the Judie roll, the karaage chicken and the Kaizen ribs. My friend got the albacore tuna which I got to try and tuna sashimi. All we absolutely delicious! Service was top notch, as always. Our wait staff and sushi maker were all on point. Our order was taken promptly and food arrived shortly thereafter. We sat at the sushi bar so we got to interact with our sushi maker quite a bit. He was hilarious. I was visiting a friend in Davis when we happened to stumble upon this bustling restaurant. We went relatively early for dinner but by the time we got there, the place was packed, and rightly so! My friend and I were seated at the sushi bar and received complimentary edamame. We shared the Agedashi tofu appetizer which was cooked perfectly and tasted fantastic and then I ordered the Peter Two Roll, which had fresh eel and tuna. Unfortunately I didn't take photos of our food because it took over 30min to get our food and when it came, everyone was starving and starting chowing down. We ordered from the Happy Hour menu (2-5pm.) We ordered bento box combos with beef curry and teriyaki salmon and teriyaki chicken and California rolls. The food was decent. But the Happy Hour specials didn't seem like Happy Hour prices. They were all about $17-20. I thought it was a bit pricey for Happy Hour as it seemed like regular prices. You're defiantly paying for the ambiance a bit at Mikuni, but their service and food is great, so all in all, I think it's worth it and a great date location! It's also in a really good location, with a parking lot in the back, and within walking distance to downtown and UC Davis. Most rolls are going to cost $12-24, even for more basic rolls, like a simple spicy tuna. So if you're looking for cheap sushi, this isn't the place. Their food was good, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it was $25/roll good. Because of COVID, they also aren't serving their whole menu. Honestly, I enjoyed my experience here and would likely come back, especially if I was looked for a nicer meal. However, given that Davis has a lot of sushi options, that are much more affordable and the same quality, I will often pass Mikuni for another option. I came here with my bf and his family during grad weekend (June 2021) around 4pm and were seated right away. We were starving so we got the tempura as an appetizer and got a set and 2 other rolls. The tempera barely came with anything...Not sure if the tempura was smaller because it was Happy Hour. But it only came with like 8 pieces of vegetables. And some of those vegetables shouldn't even be tempura. It didn't work. It took 20 mins for the rest of the food to start coming out. The food was ok... not the best sushi I've ever had but also not the worst. The nigiri was ok in terms of freshness. The rolls honestly all tasted the same to me. The platter was $90... Came back here for the second time since they have amazing sushi. Ordered 4 rolls for two people and it was just the perfect amount. I personally really liked the incredible roll which was a recommendation from our waiter and the Kaiser was recommended by someone else when we came for the first time. It didn't take long for us to get our table for a Friday night since it's a party of two and we didn't mind sitting at the bar. The bartender were super friendly always checking up on us even though they were incredibly busy themselves. There is a free parking lot behind the restaurant so you don't need to worry about parking and there's also st parking around the area. we came in at 3:30ish on a Friday and got seated at the sushi bar right away and we were greeted by the entire staff on the floor including the sushi chefs. our server let us know that we would be ordering everything through the sushi chef except for kitchen appetizers. we started with the yuzu calamari and omg soo good!! then we got both the hamachi aburi 1 and sake aburi 1 and OMGGG THAT IS A MUST!! them we got the garlic salmon but there wasn't really garlic anything on it and i wish it was avocado slices instead of mashed avocado but it was still delicious. then we Kaiser roll and a Fresh roll and was so good. our server only checked on us one time which was fine until we had to wait about 10 minutes for our bill. honestly was fine for us because me and my sister were just sitting and talking. the sushi chefs checked on us about 3-4 times and were super sweet!! we will 110% be back to try some more sushi! I came here on a Friday evening at 5pm (sadly just missing their happy hour) and it was already busy with larger groups waiting. Since there were no tables ready (even on the patio when it was pretty cold outside) we were seated at the sushi bar. Our sushi chef Ming was really welcoming and was ready to take our sushi orders at any time. I ordered the sashimi combo while my friend ordered while my friend ordered the iron chef combo. We only waited for a little while before he made our food as he was in the middle of preparing another table's roll. I didn't ask about which fish he used as I'm shy, but he overheard our conversations arguing which fish was which so Ming then settled our debate. The fish itself was very fresh with there being little to no fishy taste to any of it. My favorite from this plate was the yellowtail. I also had a taste of the iron chef roll from my friend and the panko shrimp was super good and crunchy even when sitting in the roll. Overall a very good dinner that was well worth the price. If you're coming to dinner during the weekend though, try coming a little earlier to avoid a long wait. read more

10-8-21 Longtime eater of Mikuni's but first time at their Davis location. Regardless of the location I always get similar items. I highly recommend ALL the aburi nigiri . This type of nigiri is torched on the top so it's not fully raw nor fully cooked. But what it does is bring out the fatty oils of the fish and adds a bit of smokiness. They have 4 types and Of aburi nigiri- salmon , salmon with garlic and chili oil, and I think 2 types of tuna. If you haven't tried it yet your missing out. Out of all of them I highly recommend the salmon, but they are all good. Another item I always get is the illegal asparagus. It's so good I didn't have a chance to take a picture of it. It was gone as soon as it hit are table. Also the sashimi combo is one of my go-tos as well. I love raw fish so if I am trying a new "sushi" spot for the first time I'll order the sashimi as my way to see if the place is good or not. I have never been disappointed yet. Now for my main entry I almost always get the same thing- the Sake Don!!! It's raw slices of salmon over delicious sushi rice topped with a bit of fish eggs and a garnish of shiso leaf. I wish they gave more shiso leaf, because I love to make little shiso-wraps. (See images) and if your considering the Sake Don I have a tip for you- ask them to torch it. So I'd like to circle back and talk about a few of the other things and I love about This location and Mikuni's in general. The customer service is phenomenal!!! For the record, I was so hyped to try out this sushi hot spot. I think the price is higher than normal for sushi but if the high cost matches the high quality, in theory it should be well worth it. I ordered some food to go, the Sacramento roll, the Annie roll, and the miso soup. Simple enough. I came to the restaurant and I had a difficult time finding the hostess because it was empty out front. After going inside, I found someone and was able to grab my food to go. The Annie roll was nicely presented while the Sacramento roll was more so thrown into a box but both sushi rolls tasted so off. I think the fish wasn't as fresh as proclaimed in previous reviews. The one positive feedback I can give is that the $2 miso soup was pretty decent, otherwise it was truly a disappointment. read more

We usually try Nigiri in Japanese restaurants, but this time we only tried special rolls (with Brown Rice) plus some appetizers. Mix Tempura: typical American style - with sweet batter. Flaming Shrooms: unique Tempura mushrooms, little too heavy for me. Mel Roll: similar to Japanese fish-only Futomaki with tuna, yellowtail, salmon, shrimp, and touch of wasabi - great for fish lovers. Fresh Roll: also more traditional one but uniquely served with Negi and Ponzu. Una Cali Roll and James Dean Roll: similar eel and masago dominant heavy sauce with a little difference in ingredients. Finally made it to this restaurant. It was worth the wait. The food is amazing. We had the DMC lobster roll it was the best roll I have ever had. Everything was really good. I've been to Mikuni's a couple times and tried out a variety of different foods to have a pretty good idea of the quality of the restaurant. Definitely one of the better places to get sushi in Davis but is also a more costly option. Patio/outdoor seating situation: There is a section that is outside, somewhat enclosed and heated but there was a 30 minute wait the last time I came here for the section. They also have some outdoor tables (which are not in the heated area) which you can be seated at more quickly. Recommendations: I would recommend the nigiri pieces (cost around $6.25 for two pieces) The hamachi aburi is what I like to get--it's seared slightly to get a smoked taste but is not completely cooked. The salmon quality is just ok. Bento boxes are also ok if you are hungry. Service: Wait staff is friendly and the level of customer service is pretty good. read more

I did curbside pickup here recently. Online ordering on their website was easy and pickup was quick. We parked in one of the designated spots for curbside pickup, called the phone number that was listed in the order confirmation email, and a masked and gloved employee promptly brought our order out. I ordered a bento box for lunch and two rolls. For my bento I chose salmon shioyaki and California roll. It was also came with salad and a whole extra container of rice. Everything tasted good and I felt like I got my $14.50's worth. I also ordered the Fox roll and the DMC roll (NBA fan here). They were pricey at about $20 each but they were huuuge! One of them had lobster in it too. Too many flavors and sauces in my mouth for my personal liking. Wish they had simpler options like a shrimp tempura roll. Overall though, I was satisfied with my overall experience and would be likely to place another order with Mikuni. read more

Mikuni is a very good restaurant but I wouldn't call it a traditional Japanese restaurant or traditional Japanese food I would find in Japan. I would call it Asian Fusion. That said, the service was great, the food presentation very good and it was tasty. The restaurant is clean and is well designed. A rare disappointing experience. The Mikuni App kept me looping with "order online" so I phoned in only to have a recording say the best way to order was "online". At $100 per meal I'm surprised how few points I've accrued. Finally serving team let my foot sit 20' from me indefinitely after I had paid at the cashier - I regret tipping early. After that a man walks to them close up and they acknowledge him and put him on the waitlist before us.
