This is a very popular sushi place in Davis. It was full on a very early Saturday evening, and it is not surprising because the quality of the rolls were excellent. We started with some toro sashimi, which was pretty good, as was their king salmon nigiri. We then ordered a couple of rolls that were recommended by the server --- both excellent choices, and the portions were quite generous. The first was the benjamin roll, which had Eel, seared tuna, panko shrimp, crab mix, avocado, jalapenos, sauce, torched, masago, and green onions. The second roll was the DMC roll, which had Tempura lobster, avocado, crab mix, white tuna, soy wrap, sauce, torched, tempura bits. The second roll was especially large and also delicious. It is a louder atmosphere as they have TVs and a bar so a great place to eat for groups/social gatherings. Even better, they have outdoor seating in a super chill part of town, which makes this spot my new favorite sushi corner and very well worth the drive. Food was decent and my order was made pretty fast. The beef curry was okay, not anything too notable about the flavor but more beef and carrot pieces would've been nice, especially given the price. Katsu was pretty good. The katsu at some places tend to fall apart, but this one never did. Wasn't too thick or thin and had good texture to it. Miso soup could have been better. It's complimentary at most restaurants with your meal but not here. But even the free ones are better because they come with all the typical miso soup toppings. For $2.50 I just had broth and a few tofu pieces (also interestingly didn't appear to be silken tofu). I feel like given the price compared to other places, there's room for improvement because I didn't pay $30 for half of my meal to be rice. Overall, it was an okay experience. Not amazing, but not bad. Service was good, they picked up my phone call quickly and were nice. The staff and atmosphere at this restaurant is 5/5. Work culture seems decent and everyone contributes and communicates well. They're very kind and attentive to their patrons as well. The food, however, not the best. I would have rated a 3 but bumped it up to 3.5 stars because of the staff's efforts. I was here for happy hour and made it with 2 minutes to spare. Happy hour is Mon-Fri from 2-5pm. I started off ordering a couple things and then asked for a salad recommendation. The server raved about the wakame salad only for me to realize that it was seaweed salad when it came out lol. Seaweed salad is more or less the same everywhere, so I don't have much to say. The freaky edamame was disappointing. The "seriously seasoned soybeans" was basically seasoned with the japanese ramen seasoning bottle (Shichimi Togarashi) and garlic. It was just oily and lacked in complexity. Lastly, the karaage nuggets were fine but didn't come with any sauce. It was salted, fried chicken and I had to ask to see if there was something I could dip it in. It was slightly humorous that I was suggested teriyaki and katsu sauce. Luckily, someone else chimed it and suggested the zig zag sauce. It completed the dish and should always come with it! Anyways, I realize that I didn't have any sushi here yet, so I will be back to review that next time. FYI- First come, first serve. No reservations. It starts to get busy at around 5:30pm. It pains me to write this. My husband and I are loyal Mikuni customers. We rave about their sushi and recommend Mikuni to others. We love it so much we go at least twice a month and spend a minimum of $175 per visit and have been since 2020. To us it's worth it because the quality is great and portions were huge. But I hate to say this but the quality has gone down, the portions are very small and the prices have gone up. We ordered the Mel and DMC and the sizes of each piece were extremely small. Definitely not worth spending $30 on a roll. However, the customer service is always great as well as the atmosphere. Hopefully Mikuni Davis will go back to the great quality and huge portions sizes as they did before that hooked us in as constant customers. Stopped by this place on my way home from Sacramento back to the bay area. Found this restaurant while driving around Davis looking for somewhere to eat and I recognized the name because it is a chain restaurant in Sacramento. I normally don't eat at chain restaurants, however the difference with this chain of Japanese restaurants is that they are all consistently good. And that's coming from me a Japanese guy with high expectations on food taste. The wait for a table was really long on a weeknight at 6 PM however since I was alone because I was traveling, I asked to be seated at the bar. I only waited about 30 minutes which was not bad compared to the one hour wait for table service. I ordered the chirashi bowl. The presentation looked really good when it came out and the fish quality was even better. The sashimi all tasted so fresh and delicious. And the sushi rice was excellent as it enhanced the flavor of the fish which is exactly what its supposed to do. I really enjoyed this dish and would order it again if I were to come back. It definitely filled my craving for sushi that night. Oh, I also ordered the fried gyoza. It was a pretty good appetizer. Nothing really jumped out at me to report on this dish. Lots of rolls sounded tasty, with fun names, like the Marilyn Monroll, 49er Jack Roll, Pimp My Roll, etc., but I went for the Incredible Roll w/ spicy tuna, Pablo shrimp, white tuna, avocado, Masako and green onion, torched w/ sauce, and it was beautiful and very tasty. Mikuni finally moved and has a bar that makes it functional to eat/drink there and thank the lord for that! We ate at the bar and had such great service from Victor and Zac! If I didn't have a Filipino husband I might have felt super racist ordering the Yellow Fever cocktail, but since I do, I did! It's basically a more interesting lemon drop. Great drink!! Try this! In the heart of the downtown drag, it appears to be THE hopping spot to go to. There's an ample bar, well lit and large dining area, and TVs galore to watch sports to your heart's content. They've got a nice selection of adult drinks - including reasonably priced Yamazaki whiskey (its hard to find) and Pliny the Elder (overrated, but also hard to find). They've also got a sweet birthday giveaway wheel where you can get free food, swag, etc. It would get a higher rating, but their food isn't up to par. Here's why: 1) sushi rolls are min 60-40 ratio or rice to actual filling. The shrimp inside my wife's roll was basically all overcooked tempura breading with a malnutritioned shrimp inside. 2) My FIL's miso ramen was bland. He had to add some soy sauce to liven it up. 3) My 7 piece nigiri sushi felt like a kid's meal - the sashimi cuts were pretty small. 4) I ordered the 4 piece toro sashimi special to try and the fish didn't taste as fresh as I'd like. Having grown up in a Japanese American family, I'm pretty picky when it comes to Japanese restaurants. We have always eaten at Mikuni the past but it's a totally horrible experience tonight. We had a take out order for James, Japan Mafia and Pimp my roll tonight. The James roll has little to no salmon on top. The roll was cut out of different proportion. The Japan Mafia has no scallop inside in half of the roll. The taste is still decent but I don't appreciate the careless effort made on take out orders. I don't know who made these rolls but definitely will not come back if this issue is not resolved. read more

Mikuni Davis has fallen off so hard since the pandemic. The service - it's just atrocious. Multiple times, we've had to wait at our table 5+ minutes to even be greeted by our server. Tonight drove me to the point that I finally left a review. It took us 30 minutes to get a patio table, even though there were multiple tables open for at least 10 minutes before they finally called us. Once we got seated, we were ignored - even as the server checked on the table next to us (who had their food) twice. After waiting the allotted 5 minutes with not so much as an "I'll be right with you," we left. The food is decent - even though they stripped their menu down a while ago. I'd recommend getting it to go and eating at one of the tables by the lawn in the strip mall the restaurant is in. You won't be missing much. Can't help but to compare to their Concord location. Concord is hands down better due to the overall service. On the other hand, the food quality is the same. Been here twice and likely be back. In addition to ordering our usual favorites, we've included a party platter because. There were seven platters (A to G), but we chose platter E (chef's selection sashimi). The platter does look bigger than what is shown on the menu. We did enjoy it. I'd recommend the platter for a party of three or more. Otherwise, it may lack variety. My housemates and I came by to celebrate a birthday! I love the atmosphere here, it's very comforting. The staffs were wonderful, their service is quick. They didn't accept reservations when we went on Wednesday night; it's a first come first serve. We didn't wait long though: it was like a 15 minutes wait to be seated. The food was excellent. We got the family deal which we ordered the Flaming' Shrooms, Sea Steak, Marilyn MonRoll, Rainbow Roll, and the cheesecake. On top of that we ordered the Fair Oaks Rolls. The Flamin Shroom was very unique! It a must try: it's like an unique interpretation of the Takoyaki. The Sea steak came in options with white or red tuna, we went with both! You can tell the fish was fresh and the flavors were pristine. The rolls were good, a fair competition for other places but the appetizer were winners. The cheesecake was very special! I've never seen another place with cheesecake like this and I would come back just for the cheesecake. I was visiting a friend in Davis when we happened to stumble upon this bustling restaurant. We went relatively early for dinner but by the time we got there, the place was packed, and rightly so! My friend and I were seated at the sushi bar and received complimentary edamame. We shared the Agedashi tofu appetizer which was cooked perfectly and tasted fantastic and then I ordered the Peter Two Roll, which had fresh eel and tuna. As someone who is pretty bad with spice, I must say the Siracha was a bit overwhelming at times but this roll was super filling and tasty nonetheless. I will be back if I'm ever in Davis! read more
