DC has its share of high volume well known eateries. If you venture past these, DC is loaded with quaint cafes which can be equally as good. Mikko is one with that almost perfect cafe atmosphere when the outside dining is available when it is a nice night in DC. Service felt personalized maybe a function of its size. I ordered the trout which had crunchy almonds on a bed of sweet potato's and some spinach. Delicious. I think I found the neighborhood gem.
I got the cardamom bun and I also got the lamb meatballs from here and I was a little disappointed. It was not what I remembered from my prior adventures in Denmark. I think that I came here with very high expectations for it to completely match my experience of Study Abroad which I didn't. I don't think I would get the lamb meatballs again, but the cardamom bun was pretty good. The service was pretty good here. The café was a little bit tight, but we still got seating. However, it didn't really remind me of the cafés in Scandinavia. I think that this was not very representative of what I remember Scandinavian as.
Our soup club came here and we were not disappointed. After getting to taste a little of each soup, the mushroom soup was my favorite and I got to pair with a delicious gluten free grilled cheese sandwich. Service was a little slow, but the food definitely made up for it. Would recommend and cannot wait to go again.
Went for brunch and everything was good! The French toast is sweet and dense id recommend sharing It and getting a savory dish. The servers were knowledgeable and friendly. Seating outside was nice.
I've been wanting to try this place for a while and I decided to stop by on my way home from running errands. The restaurant is small but there's plenty of seating both inside and outside. It's very colorful and kind of resembles a small market. I had the fish soup, to go. It was absolutely delicious. It comes in a creamy broth or a clear broth. I ordered the clear and it was so flavorful . Packed with potatoes, salmon and cod, I wish I ordered more. I'll definitely be back to try some other items on the menu.
This place was such a charming and cute brunch spot. Drinks are delicious and service is great! We sat outside which was super pleasant. The food is decent- I got the salmon sandwich, which was good but not as flavorful as I was hoping. Next time I def want to try the salmon Benedict which my sister got and loved. They also have a variety of fun candy inside to purchase!
It's embarrassing how many times we've walked by this restaurant, thinking we should "check it out sometime." Today we finally did! Brunch was really tasty with quick, friendly service, and great vibes. I got the Swedish pancakes with a mimosa and my partner got the salmon eggs Benedict with a more traditional cocktail. Everything was great! It's also clearly a great neighborhood hang with affordable prices and a casual setting. We'll definitely be back regularly!
We had an incredible experience at Mikko. We started with the Nordic Old fashions, which were amazing. We shared the mushroom soup and the potato fondant, which can only be described as savory decadence. For our main course, we shared the hearty lamb and cabbage stew and it was hands down the best meal I've had in DC to date. Every bite was exceptional. The service was outstanding from start to finish. You absolutely need to eat here!!
Very good food and drinks! The traditional fish soup was delicious and had huge chunks of fish in it. The French toast was amazing and the perfect portion so you didn't feel like you had eaten a whole loaf of bread. And the Smoked Salmon Benedict gave you soo much Salmon, you definitely feel like you got your moneys worth, and then some. I also loved my hot toddy, it was the perfect drink for the freezing temps outside. Heads up that the inside is a bit small but they do have seating there. They also have seating outside in a heated space!
An OK restaurant but overpriced and not the most selections for delivery. My friend and I recently ordered a weeknight dinner takeout from Mikko on DoorDash. We wanted to order from the dinner menu but we were told it was unavailable during the week-we were only able to order from the all-day menu. This menu misses some very good-looking dishes such as the soups, rostis, lamb, and pastas. My friend and I each ordered the gravlax open-faced sandwiches. While there was a generous amount of lox, the sandwiches were very small. The sandwiches were fine, although the lox was very salty and there was nothing to balance out the salt.
Ate here on a calm warm Sunday evening with spouse and grown daughter, on her recommendation. Nordic/Danish food, reminiscent of when we visited her during her semester abroad in Copenhagen! Limited nice menu, good selection of delicious choices. All of us got traditional fish soup, the two ladies got the cream version and grilled cheese on the side. I got the clear version and an order of potato rosti with mushrooms. All Delicious, good service. Cute place, we sat in semi-enclosed area on sidewalk. Definitely recommended! ,
Eating here feels like getting a warm hug from a Finnish grandma you never knew you had, and never knew you needed. Mikko is an absolute MUST on cold days and evenings. Order a soup with grilled cheese. It's only $20 and it's a full meal and like all traditional soups, it's served at near boiling temps which is the way it's supposed to be! It's meant to be enjoyed slowly, over conversation, and will make you feel cozy from the first sip. I had the fish soup. Hype is real. Pirjo (rhymes with "Cheerio") is a gem and must be protected! She gave me some Finnish post cards on the house because I knew how to curse in Finnish! Yijit ("yeet") was a fantastic server and has a lot of fun stories about DC to tell if you ask. Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian food are all kinda the same. Good, to be sure, but very similar. Finnish comfort food just hits different. I'll be back!
I have never had Scandinavian food before, so Mikko's been on my list to try. My friend and I made a reservation for dinner yesterday. The interior is a bit small (a few 2-seaters and some bar seats). They also do happy hour every day from 4-7 PM, so this doesn't only apply to alcoholic drinks but also includes soups, too! TRADITIONAL FISH SOUP (WITH CLEAR BROTH) - 11 Normally it's 14, but the HH pricing was 11. Also, +5 for grilled cheese. The bowl was pretty big (larger than 16 oz. portion, I think) and filled with salmon. I was surprised by the amount of salmon in here, which was tender and not overly fishy. The clear broth was light and well-seasoned with herbs, definitely very comforting and perfect for a chilly October evening. There was also a good amount of potatoes, onions, carrots, and celery in here. This was good and I'd recommend. The grilled cheese had some thin rye bread that hit the spot and filled me up. It's not anything crazy and very much something you can make at home. My friend got the crawfish soup, which she enjoyed. I've heard good things about their brunch, so I'll have to return one day. Their other dinner options also look good, so I will try a small plate or bigger dinner plate next time.

I had brunch at Mikko this past Sunday with my husband and a friend. It's Nordic restaurant with a great menu, wonderful service, and a charming outdoor seating area! While there are plenty of things I wanted off their dinner menu (as well as their lunch plates, which area only available on weekdays), there was plenty to choose from for brunch, too! All three of us got a bowl of traditional fish soup (with salmon, cod, and potatoes) - two of us with clear broth and one of us the creamy version. It is a delicious soup - especially on a cool autumn day! I tried both versions, and they're different but both good. But for me? That clear broth fish soup was perfect. All three of us all got a little something with our soup. My husband got a little grilled cheese sandwich (it's offered as an add on to any soup for $5.50). My friend go ta slice of smoked salmon quiche. And I got a herring open-faced sandwich (rye bread with hardboiled egg, mayo, red onion, tomato, and dill). The herring sandwich tasted great, but I do wish they had served it differently. The hard-boiled egg was all together; the herring was all together; the onion was a large wedge. Rather than getting all the herring/egg/tomato in one bite, I sort of moved everything off the toast onto the plate to dice it up, mix it up, and then put it back on the toast - that way I could have a little of everything in one bite. The way they served it looked interesting but wasn't very easy to eat. Still tasted great! We also had some drinks: a Bloody Mary, a mulled wine, another hot drink special for the season, and a Fish Soup Take 2 (aquavit, lemon soda, lemon wedge, juniper berries, dill, and cucumber slices). All the drinks were good - plenty of options for brunch! Their Nordic-inspired drinks are options you can't get other places - Lonkero, aquavit and tonic, and more. The service was really friendly, and the outdoor seating was a dream on a pretty day. I'm sure I'll return to Mikko, because they have lots of things on the menu that I crave! read more
Amazing soup, I think I found my new neighborhood soap place for cold weather! The soups are hearty and HUGE! We definitely ordered way too much food but I'll definitely be back for soup especially in the cold! Small seating area inside but they also have outdoor seating! What can I say? This restaurant is absolutely adorable and the food is exceptional. There's limited seating inside but it was nice enough out that some groups dined outside. In addition to the Nordic cuisine on the menu, they also sell European sweets. Everything was tempting but I got the chicken schnitzel. My husband got beef and a side of mushroom soup. The soup was comforting and perfect for a chilly evening. My schnitzel was tasty and I hope to return to try one of the many fish dishes. The cocktails are unique but don't go for an Aquavit one unless you like the flavor of it. My husband didn't love his second cocktail but that was his own fault for getting something he might not like. I enjoyed both of my cocktails, one of which had pickle juice in it. You wouldn't think that all of the flavors would work together, but they do. This restaurant is a gem and I definitely want to return and recommend it to everyone I know read more

On a cold January day, Mikko felt right. I've wanted to check this Nordic-Food spot out for months. Counter service is a quick way to order food and interesting to-go orders, pastries, and delicacies. I ordered the Swedish meatballs and I would say it was a great source of fuel and delicious! I chose to sit in the restaurant and had a quaint two-seater table reminiscent of being in Europe. Food came out fast and warmed me up. If you're wanting an intimate space to enjoy Nordic cuisine, definitely must try next time you're in DuPont Circle. read more
First international stop on our Trip Around the World Staycation! Shop has a nice variety of Scandinavian treats and gifts including Moomin mugs. Seating is outside either just outside of the restaurant (wall opens up to reveal countertop) or in their covered dining area closer to the street. Food was exquisite. It is hard to name a favorite. We enjoyed bratwurst, Swedish meatballs, and the seared salmon lunches. Salads were fresh and dressed perfectly. Salmon couldn't have been more perfect, amazing flavor and seared to perfecThe bratwurst was the best I've had in a while and not overdone in the least. We also enjoyed the mustard served with it. The Swedish meatballs were perfect ... absolutely nothing like IKEA. So glad to have found a place for amazing Scandinavian food. We will definitely return, especially for brunch! This is a lovely little cafe/restaurant. When we went it was balmy and sitting in the outdoor seating felt good. they were running a special on Long Drink, which is a citrusy canned cocktail that is popular in Finland. I ordered the smoked salmon w poached egg open faced sandwich, which was tasty, though my friend's Gravlax one was better from the morsel he let me have. The deserts were lovely as well and you can go in and pick them out by how much they entice you with their appearance. read more

Mikko: nested in a quiet DuPont circle residential neighborhood, the tiny colorful Nordic restaurant is more like a next door delicatessen. I haven't been able to travel outside the US for two years, so I decided to try world cuisine to whet my globe trotting appetite. I went to Mikko before noon, so it was quiet. The service was courteous but felt cold. The menu was written on a blackboard. The lunch prices were pretty reasonable. There were some prepared salads and bakery items at the counter. I decided to try 4*Bratwurst: the aroma of the fried sausage floated through my face mask; it was very good. The accompanying salad was fresh and clean, the honey mustard sauce was light. Also came with a big chunk of potato salad. Overall it was a simple but good lunch. There were lots of Nordic snacks. Not all prices were marked but most were pricey. I bought some, including 5*a tube of Kalles creamed smoked roe. It reminded me of Iceland where I had my first taste of roe years ago. 5*Canned Cod liver: I loved it - the texture and taste reminded me of Foi Gras, but it's not for everyone. 4*A loaf of house made seven-seed bread at $9: plain but healthy. I cut a few slices and put smoked roe and cod liver on top, perfect combinations. 4* Freia milk chocolate with chopped hazelnut: made in Norway, sweet and crunchy. 3*Geisha: a box of Finland milk chocolate with soft hazelnut filling. It contains 21 tiny wrapped pieces of chocolate candies. The flavor was light, hazelnut was unnoticeable. I think I could get similar stuff at cheaper prices. read more
In a word, this place is eclectic. There's a lot going on and it's a fun spot. It's been adding to its core business since its opening, in 2018. The menu is Scandinavian focused however if you aren't into Nordic cuisine, you'll still be okay because there's plenty of familiar continental foods for everyone's taste buds. I appreciate the "shop" and "bakery" (my quotation marks) that Mikko offers along with his restaurant. I can get imported lingonberry jam, dark breads and other prepared Nordic and European foods for my pantry (I'm Norwegian-American). The rhubarb-sour cream tart that's baked in-house is to die for, BTW. Just look at the display case and pick out some goodie that's made from scratch to take home; you really can't go wrong. I spoke with Chef Mikko one afternoon just recently as he was creating a myriad of plated foods, in the prep area behind the eat-in counter, found in the rear of the space. He's a hard worker, always trying to improve, conscientious of the local scene in which he has placed himself, wanting to please his customers. Candidly, I'm just happy this Nordic eatery is here. The chicken schnitzel with capers I've got was absolutely delicious, the side fries was so crunchy I loved it. I think it's the danish version of the classical German dish, but I thought it would be more typical danish if it were using veal (?) instead chicken(?) Pastries-- I have very mixed feelings. My friend and I got there pretty late for dinner, so after food when we asked I can still take a look at the pastries, they were taking them out of the wrappers. The cinnamon roll and cardamom bun that I got look a bit different (and burnt) from my impression of what they should look like --tasted okay. Karelian pie was interesting but a bit bland. But then again I haven't been to Scandinavian countries yet, so it's just my humble opinion. And I will update this review once visit Oh. Please use the bug spray when sitting outside, I had so many mosquito bites I nearly died. read more
Back for another review of Mikkos, Still an amazing little place with the most quality of items. The salmon eggs Benedict was the best I've ever had anywhere. The salmon is house made and so good and the egg was perfectly poached. Swedish pancakes are so delicious. Happy hour is great, with $4 off their excellent cocktails. The Nordic mimosa was really good. The bean, prosciutto, and arugula salad appetizer was also delicious. read more

I've walked past this restaurant a million times and decided to finally try it last night. The front & outdoor seating is so cute and the menu is very unique. I split 2 "small plates" ($10 each) with my friend-- the shrimp skagen with potato rosti & the herring plate. Both are SMALL-- I would recommend getting your own appetizers versus sharing since they taste so good and are so tiny. For entrees, I ordered the mushroom pasta (very creamy & salty). My friend ordered the lamb burger. We both enjoyed our food and will come back! Next time, I will probably order more of the small plates and then split an entree with someone. read more

Stumbled across this place and found a gem! I don't usually post reviews, but I just had to because the food was AMAZING. Such a wonderful hole in the wall. Had the split pea soup with ham and added on a grill cheese with ham. Seriously delicious as the sandwich was awesome and the split pea was the best I've ever had. read more

It is rare to come across nordic cuisine! Mikko is a very cute restaurant tucked away in the heart of DuPont Circle and perfect for a girls hangout or brunch! They have separate weekday lunch, weekend brunch, and dinner menus. Covered outdoor seating available and reservations through OpenTable. read more

Yes-- they can adjust the dishes to be gluten free upon request. Most of their pastries in the display case aren't gluten free, but they do have at least two or three sweet pastries that are already gluten free (e.g. they are made with almond flour).
