Awesome gooey sandwiches with lots of vegetarian options on the menu. You can't go wrong with any of the choices.

My first meal in Anchorage was very memorable. I was trying to get lunch and was unsuccessful with my first couple of places that I tried as they were closed. So I found this place on my Yelp app and LOVED this little cute cafe. It had a very funky, local, organic vibe to it with lots of plants and art all around. I went up to the counter and was really indecisive as there were so many great options. I settled on the lunch combo which is a great deal--half a sandwich, cup of soup or salad, and carrots or chips. I got the brie sandwich, a cup of the black bean chipotle soup and the carrots. The brie panini had tomatoes, spinach, garlic aioli, basil and of course brie. It was an amazing combination. The soup was pretty good too, rich and hearty. I indulged and got a chocolate chip cookie too as they had freshly made baked goods all lined up along the counter which made it hard to resist. But that cookie totally completed the meal! Was soft and chewy and bursting with good flavor. The staff here is pretty friendly and nice. Overall a great little spot downtown to have a quick and casual bite. read more

I tried this place because of the groupon. You get two sandwiches or salads, two cookies, and two bottle drinks. Good deal... The first thing I ate, was the cookie. I love chocolate chip cookies. The cookie I had was a little stale, I was disappointed that it wasn't fresh. However, it wasn't stale enough for me to stop eating it. I ordered the turkey, swiss, and cranberry sandwich. The sandwich was a little dry. I would like to have a little for cranberry on it. To me, the food was ok. I wouldn't drive out of my way to try this place again, but if I were at 5th ave mall, I might go and try again. Next time, I think I'd order a panini or one of their open faced sandwiches. read more

I'm a firm believer in first impressions. Most restaurants have to wow me in some way to make me go through the effort of returning. There's too many options in the world for me to settle on Okay food. However. I also think it's important to support local, small businesses. It's for that reason that I went back to Midnight Sun Cafe for a second try. Unfortunately, I HADN'T just caught them on a bad day or ordered the wrong thing. The second time, they're food was just as bleh. Both visits my food was dreadfully bland. Panini's and sandwiches with no condiment. Soooo I'm getting spinach and watery tomato between dry bread? Yum. The lovely things that give food flavor (like butter or spices or ANYTHING) are noticeably absent from these dishes. Even when cheese is included, it a measly thin slice that disappears under the weight of other ingredients. It's all bland, all the time. And to top it off, the produce is pitiful. If the star of your dish is veggies, they can't be old or unripe! And this cannot be simply because we're in Alaska; other restaurants do not serve me spoiled, dried out carrots or almost white tomatoes. The food is all-around disappointing. And this is such a prime location in downtown Anchorage; there should be a better presence for tourists and locals to love. Not a ho-hum, lackluster place. read more

Midnight Sun was a fresh oasis close to my conference's hotel. Inexpensive, quick, and surprisingly good. The beef and barley soup was rich but not salty. My turkey and cranberry sandwich was a little light on the cranberry but otherwise great. Plus inexpensive. If I had found this place earlier, I likely would have explored less during lunch. read more

Friendly, nice staff, and pretty good coffee. Took awhile to get mine, but it had some nifty latte art in it; quite impressive. I'm disappointed they used a faux-soymilk called "Soy Blenders," which is a soy-like drink that's full of canola oil fillers. I hate that stuff, so if I come here again, I'll likely opt just for black coffee or straight espresso. Even with that to knock a star off, the shop is super cute and cozy, with lots of knick-knacks for sale, and an extensive menu (at least for a coffee shop). They're in a weird location with not a ton of street-side parking open, so parking might be hard. read more

Ok, let's start. If you want to order a BLT, add $2 for avocado, ask for it it to be LIGHTLY toasted, your gonna get a rock hard mayo Sandwich. Like if they put half the avocado and bacon that they put mayo and tomato they may be on to something. But, that they are not. Bread was so hard it tore the roof of my mouth up. Every bite was mayo filled.(Not in a good way) literally the worst BLT I've ever experienced. How hard is a BLT? Rock hard if you order it here. Far way too many options in the close area to waste your time here. I work less than a block away and as excited as i was to try something new and different, I'm Sorry I wasted my bucks. I ended up staying in Anchorage a few extra days longer than expected therefore I was on a budget and couldn't afford to drop lots of $$ on breakfast everyday. Thankfully I was located just minutes from the cafe. Going on a recommendation from a local who worked at the hotel I was staying at I ended up at the cafe every morning. The staff was super friendly and the sausage, egg, and cheese croissant was just perfect to get my day started. They have a great selection of coffee and expresso's and the prices were very reasonable. The store is very modest and you order your food at the counter, but I am not a snob and don't mind these things one bit.So if you are looking for delicious food and a decent variety of coffee this is your place. read more

Walk in the door to a smile and a greeting. The guy at the counter helps you through the menu and KNOWS what they do best. He offered options and descriptions that made the meals sound like really good food. Then he delivered our food within five minutes of ordering and asked us if he could get us anything else. The WiFi worked well. The restaurant was clean and tastefully decorated. The value equation for lunch was right up there near the top. Soup bursting with flavor and a ham and cheese sandwich that was huge. What can I say; they "get it"! Someone really cares that you walked in the door to spend money. Great service. Hello, my husband and I stopped in with a close friend of ours who rests his head here in downtown anchorage. It's September 3rd and a chilly and cloudy morning. I'm so thankful for the food I received the veggie sandwiches are the bomb dot com and we received great service until our friend was refused service. I really hope that him being less then gently and respectfully kicked out in the middle of our meal was both horrifying and disturbing to the once peaceful atmosphere. Sadly, due to this, I won't be coming back to eat here with my husband any time soon. I would strongly encourage people to still support this small business, however. Alaska needs to support our small businesses right now. read more

This is a solid place for food and coffee, albeit, a little overpriced. But then again, everything seems to cost more in Alaska than the 48 contiguous states. This is a great cafe to chill and read a book or the paper! Their staff is nice and friendly and they have a pretty good selection of sandwiches and salads and really good baked goods! They are sisters with moose a la mode, but the food and cookies here are way better! They have free wifi and a couple of nice seats facing the street, other than that its a little dark inside. I had a beef panini sandwich that tasted good and was very filling, but it was sliding and falling apart after the first bite. I understand they're not specifically a sandwich place but brown bag does it WAY better for a similar price... Anyways their cookies and latte art are perfect! Their food service has really gone down, as has their customer service. A lot of times my food comes out and they've completely forgot parts of it- such as my BLT they fully forgot the bacon. They've also put my food in to be heated up and then just left it there and forgot. Sometimes insisting they gave it to me if I try to ask for it. As for the customer service there's one girl that loudly complains about customers that bother her in any way and tells others how she should just not give them their order at all. read more
