This is a wonderful little lunch place. We were in Anchorage for only 2 days and we stumbled on it the 1st day. The Ham and Cheese Melt was perfect and I had a choice of chips or carrots as a side. My husband had a turkey melt that he also enjoyed. The prices aren't too high considering that it's Alaska where everything costs more. The main drawback is that service is on the slow side mostly because they only had 3 people working (not much room behind the counter so understandable). Nothing seemed to be prepackaged except the chips. The ambiance isn't much. The interior is the counter and a few rustic tables and chairs and a menu board. But definitely worth trying if you're looking for breakfast or lunch. They also have a wide selection of coffees, teas, smoothies, and combination drinks. We had the hot chocolate which on a cold day was perfect. If you are staying at the Anchorage Hilton and the price of breakfast makes you want to scream, this place is just a short walk. Food - everything was very fresh. my Wife and I had two different items. I had the Greek salad and My Wife had the turkey and Havarti cheese sandwich with chips. My salad was good but I ordered it with chicken and it wasn't on it when it came. My Wife asked for sandwiches that were hot because she was a little cold, and, while they said the turkey and harvarti sandwich was hot, it came cold. Stopped on a whim while out taking my out of town family on a "tourist" date downtown. I never knew this place existed until today even though I've parked in the ramp a decent amount of times that it above it. The cafe is clean first and foremost. It smelled wonderful as soon as you opened up the door, we were greeted with smiles by the employees. 4 different lunches items were ordered and every single one of them looked amazing. The Cubano panini was SO TASTY! There was a house made vegetarian Mexican stew was also incredibly delicious and served piping hot (which is perfect for a blustery January day). This little hipster cafe is exactly what you'd expect to find on the west coast- and it fits Anchorage's eclectic style perfectly. I've been to practically every cafe and coffee shop Anchorage has to offer, and stumbled across this one during a late AM walk downtown one Monday. Even at around 10:30 (a time when most coffee shops are a little slow between breakfast and lunch) this place was still buzzing with regular locals stopping in for a coffee, brunch, or quick snack before (or during) work. The servers behind the counter are a unique bunch- stoner looking dudes with beards and chicks with tattoos- but the people they cater to range in, well, everyone. There were older professionals, younger hippie types, couples, friend groups, and everything in between. The place is a little dirty, but I think that's just their vibe. It's dimly lit, but colorfully decorated with neon walls and bench seating. They do have free wifi (you can find the password on the side of the napkin container at each table). They have a small outdoor seating area as well. There isn't a ton of seating, but most of the people who come in here seem to head back out with their coffee or tea to go. They have a chalkboard menu behind the main counter and you simply go up and order. Drinks (and food) are served to the side of the counter in 3 to 9 minutes- even during their busier lunch hour. They have everything from sandwiches to salads to cookies to mixed coffee and tea drinks. You can order your items to go or to dine in. If you choose to dine in your coffee will be served in a mug. I ordered a small and was a little off-put by truly how small my mug was (about 6 big sips of coffee total for my 'caramel macchiato'). The peanutbutter cookie was large, though- and gooey and delicious. I haven't tried any of their menu items yet, but almost everyone who comes in here seems to come for the coffee. Don't expect your traditional Starbucks style drinks here- they are more keen to the "right" way of doing things. The caramel macchiato wasn't sweet, but was well-whipped with creamy milk and a bit of a bitter caramel undertone. I want to say there was even some cinnamon in my drink? But I'm not entirely sure. It was unique, not awful, but not as sweet as I typically like. I did appreciate the fact that my barista put a smiley face into the whipped topping. Too cute! Overall this place is unique. The wifi is very fast. The music is upbeat and a little distractingly loud. It's not super clean- but like I said, I feel like that might just be because it's so odd and eclectic. I wish it was a little more well-lit. They do seem to have a varied menu and a great selection of coffee. They're conveniently located downtown and their cookies are very yummy. Would I stop in again? Definitely, but I probably wouldn't head here regularly. Overall a very mediocre 4 star experience. I wasn't blown away- but I definitely wasn't super disappointed either. read more

Was super disappointed when I came here after looking at reviews and pictures of latte art on yelp. I ordered the raspberry caramel latte and asked if she could write Midnight Sun cafe but both the baristas kept saying they couldn't do any cute designs and only their boss could. Well then, bring out your boss!! Then, after I waited 10 minutes for my latte (running late to the airport), she did a dilapidated leaf design instead of the flowers she said she would do. Wanted to grab some breakfast in the morning and this was the closest thing to me. The place is a typical little coffee shop that offered some baked goods. I didn't find anything too special at the location but it seemed like it was a definitely a place that many locals enjoyed. When I arrived, I was promptly greeted which was nice. It was my first time there so I asked the staff what I should get. The clerk behind the counter was very helpful and gave me a full run-through of their menu. He was quite funny and answered all my questions. I decided to get a bagel breakfast sandwich with eggs and sausage. When I received it, I was pretty disappointed by the quality of the sandwich. The sausage was pretty small and I believe it might have just been some microwaved patty. In addition, the bagel did not taste that good even though it was one of their special ones. I decided to stop in this coffee shop for some studying since I was in the downtown area. Midnight Sun Café is the sister coffee shop of Moose Ala Mode at the west end of downtown on 4th Ave and K St. and is located on the corner of 5th Ave and C St. in the first floor of a parking garage just below the skybridge connecting the parking building to the mall. You will be hard-pressed to find free parking in this area unless you happen to come by on the weekends. Curbside parking is $2 for two hours and I was lucky to snag a spot outside the café on the traffic-congested 5th Ave. The seating area is spacious but outlets for your portable device are scarce with a couple of them available in a booth or at a corner table. I chose the booth at the rear of the café, got my things settled, and went up to the counter. The employees did not greet me as I walked in. To be fair, they were busy making coffee drinks and preparing food orders, but none of them save a friendly blond girl with glasses, spoke to me. A male employee with long blond hair and piercings saw me at the counter, but made no move to take my order. Another employee with dark hair saw me but also did not come up to the cash register to help me. I stood patiently at the counter and the guy directly in front of me looked at his co-worker to take my order rather than do it himself. Now, I have worked in customer service for almost 20 years and I would never do what this guy did. That was just insulting and disrespectful. However, the blond girl gave me a friendly greeting which put me at ease since I didn't feel like driving somewhere else in downtown. She asked what I would like and I decided to try the Greek Salad (romaine lettuce, Genoa salami, Kalamata olives, pepperoncini, cucumber, tomatoes, feta cheese, garlic croutons and balsamic vinaigrette) along with a 20oz. Frappe with two shots of espresso and sugar-free Irish Cream. The wait was only for a few minutes and the salad was delicious with lots of fresh romaine lettuce and a generous amount of feta sprinkled on top. Unfortunately, I decided to keep this review at two stars only because of the demeanor of the other two employees. The friendly one had left for the day before I got settled down for some studying. The booth was comfortable and the Wi-Fi fast with a strong connection, but studying there was not productive especially with the employees giving me side-long glances each time they walked by as if wondering when I was going to leave. This made the atmosphere and vibe unsettling and rather than going out to my car to extend the parking time, I decided to leave when my two hours were up. These employees were friendly to other customers as they left, saying "Have a good day." or "Thank you." I gathered up my things before heading for the car and to be nice I did say thanks. The dark haired lady tried to say "Have a good day" but stopped short when she looked up at me. The male employee who didn't want to ring me up at the register, gave me a stern look and said "Have a nice day, boss." Ouch.... It was a terrible feeling to be treated like that. I would've given one star if it weren't for the friendly blond lady who took my order and quickly brought the salad to my table. I'm all about giving second chances for a business, but it will be a very long time if I ever decide to come back here. read more

My first meal in Anchorage was very memorable. I was trying to get lunch and was unsuccessful with my first couple of places that I tried as they were closed. So I found this place on my Yelp app and LOVED this little cute cafe. It had a very funky, local, organic vibe to it with lots of plants and art all around. I went up to the counter and was really indecisive as there were so many great options. I settled on the lunch combo which is a great deal--half a sandwich, cup of soup or salad, and carrots or chips. I got the brie sandwich, a cup of the black bean chipotle soup and the carrots. The brie panini had tomatoes, spinach, garlic aioli, basil and of course brie. It was an amazing combination. The soup was pretty good too, rich and hearty. I indulged and got a chocolate chip cookie too as they had freshly made baked goods all lined up along the counter which made it hard to resist. But that cookie totally completed the meal! Was soft and chewy and bursting with good flavor. The staff here is pretty friendly and nice. Overall a great little spot downtown to have a quick and casual bite. read more
