Having been to Italy, Originale's is the closest restaurant that even compares to the taste of the sandwiches made in Italy. I've had the Nonni and the Classic Piadina. Both are packed with flavor. Whether ordering in or ordering to go, keep in mind it takes quite a while--almost 10 to 15 mins--for the staff to make your sandwich, so I wouldn't recommend that you stop here in you're in a hurry because you're not going to get it out fast. In this case, call ahead about 30 mins or so if you're picking up. The prices are a little high, but it's worth the price for the quality of the food you're getting, which I can't say for most restaurants in the present era (2020s for those that are reading this in the 2030s and 2040s, if this platform still exists then lol!) Either way, the quality is HIGH and the flavor factor? HIGH! The Classic Piadina is very fresh tasting and comes with greens. It only comes in one size, so it's a little small for me. Still delicious! The Nonni is a pretty large sandwich, if you're getting the full sandwich. The onions combine with the meat enhances the flavors. The building that Originale is in presents itself as a very quaint and relaxed lunch spot with bright colors and large windows. It's a place you can go to sit and talk with friends. I look forward to trying more of their sandwiches. read more

I popped into Originale for a weekday lunch without ordering ahead and ended up with a bit of a wait as it was fairly busy--but let me tell you, that sandwich was absolutely worth every minute. I went with the "Favorito," and let's just say, it instantly earned its name. The prosciutto cotto was pure-savory-bliss-melt-in-your-mouth good. And the focaccia- fresh, herby, and perfectly balanced in thickness. It hugged the fillings just right without stealing the show. Also, the tomatoes- I did not expect them to be so buttery and delicious. I may have paused mid-bite to appreciate them. Yes, I'm that person. As a die-hard cheese lover, the little bonus cube of cheese on the side felt like a tiny gift--like the sandwich was giving me a wink and saying, "Hey, I see you." Originale, I'll be back. Probably sooner than I should be. read more

I love Originale. This was my favorite sandwich shop downtown. I had not been since the new owners took over and decided to give it a shot while in town. I had high hopes knowing they were passed down the original recipes. I knew it wouldn't be exact but what I received was disappointing. Here's a picture of my favorite sandwich with the old owners versus new owners. Lacked mozzarella, barely any pastrami and just a dash of the funky dust instead of the coating it used to come with. No olive oil drizzle. Overall I give it 3/5. It was edible and service was good but not the same sandwich I remember. read more

I was finally able to check out this popular Italian deli. Inside there are lots of items for sale. A few triple d memorabilia spots from their visit. We were there during lunch and luckily we were able to order and sit down right away. The woman working the counter, seemed to appreciate my enthusiasm for having my order in picture form. My lunch mate wasn't hungry, therefore she ordered tiramisu. It was some of the best I've ever had. I ordered a caprese panini with mortadella and tomato soup half size, perfection! I ordered a single lemon ricotta crepe that was absolutely divine, and a full size panini (forgetting the exact one) also with tomato sauce, to go. Lastly, can't forget the Italian lemon and orange sodas that were the perfect compliment. In the end, we took more to go, than we were able to sit and eat, at which point my lunch mate got up to ask for a to go box. At first the woman working the counter said no and directed us to use their provided foil. It wasn't until she realized I was also taking my crepe home, that she then decided to give us a to go box. I'm glad she changed her mind, because I definitely tipped @ 25 percent, when I made my order...just something to consider next time. read more

Great location! Food was delicious and quick. My husband ordered the IL DIAVOLO and I ordered the NONNI with the potato salad. Fresh baked focaccia, ingredients and taste. My husband said it was the best sandwich he's eaten. It was a cute location nestled in the heart of anchorage with quick and friendly service. Check them out in person or on DDD. read more

Originale is the best and every visit the staff is so friendly. We love this Italian sandwich shop so much we are here almost every Satuday. The food, the coffee , deli meats, and desserts are top quality and we are never disappointed! This week we bought a couple of their t-shirts. We also bought some pancetta and guanciale to make carbonara. They took the time to talk about what we were making to get us the best cuts of meats. We love this place and appreciate the great food and service. read more

I ordered a diavolo with soup to-go. The sandwich was tasty, but not earth shattering good, while the soup was fairly bland. The sandwich was very simple, just meat, cheese, spices, and oil. I enjoyed it, and the full size can certainly be more than enough food for 2 people. Overall, for anchorage, this is a great catch and worth a visit for a reasonably good value lunch. read more

Guy Fieri wasn't lying when he highlighted this place. I can only say that once you try this, you'll want to go to Italy to sample more authentic Italian cuisine. The sandwiches are always delicious. My go to is the Il Diavoletti. It's not spicy but oh so good! The little peppadew peppers are so delicious, adding a little crunch and sweetness to the already amazing sandwich! Make sure you get yourself the soup with the sandwich. It's always fresh and always amazing! read more

I had been wanting to try Originale for quite some time and finally was able to! The bread was so soft and fresh. The sandwich was good overall. I enjoyed the Caprese Sandwich. I do wish there was more balsamic vinegar on the sandwich, as it wasn't very strong. The mozzarella quality was amazing. I really liked how small the soup was. With the sandwich, a big bowl of soup can be so much, but the little cup was perfect! read more

Walking down the street, we decided to step in. Great selection of sandwiches. I had the IL DIAVOLO. It was just the right amount of spice for a lunch sandwich. Easy to order, food came out quick and hot. Everyone in the place was very friendly. read more

Stopped in looking for a late afternoon pizza - this was definitely the place to be. They close at 3, last order at 2:30, so we were lucky to stumble in around 2. Originale leans heavily into "authentic Italian," and the interior decor, menu and accompaniments, and warm hospitality reflect these values. We shared a Pinsa La Margheritta ($17), add salami ($2). Marvelous fresh flavors of mozzarella, basil, tomato, and deli sliced salami. Paired with a Blood orange Sicilian Limonata and an ice cold Peroni, this just hit the spot perfectly. We weren't famished enough to go for the sandwiches, but if I'm looking for lunch in Anchorage, I would absolutely come back to try them. read more

One Word: AUTHENTIC! The Meats On the Menu is Imported from Italy! I'm ecstatic to rediscover this place! Years ago we ate here when it was on Benson it was just a sandwich shop then. 5 years ago they moved to D Street. I guess it just escaped us, but Judy has been wanting to go back here! I'm glad she did. IL DIAVOLO - Panini OMG Spicy sandwich will Calabrian Chili Peppers, w/Spicy Salami, Sopressata, Coppa & Pepper Salami, Mozzarella and Hot Olive Oil! 6 Stars! The best Panini I've ever eaten! Pinza Puttanesca - It's kinda sorta a pizza but not crust is crazy different and good! Mouth watering meats and ricotta cheese topped spicy too! So good 5 Stars! Then we got a few more Pinza's ToGo for making at home! 2 Vacuum Sealed Frozen Spicy Piccante Pinsa's Can't wait to try these. We're coming here more often, maybe every 2-3 Weeks!? HA! One thing I miss about Chicago is the abundance of authentic Italian delis & eateries. It's the biggest thing I get homesick over as I grew up in a Italian immigrant household & Italian food is comfort. Originale sells sandwich's, soups, deli meats & cheeses, desserts and pinse (Roman style pizza). It took my a while to check out Originale because they have hours that don't really work with my schedule as I'm rarely downtown in the afternoons. Though they do also have special evening hours (5-7:30pm) on Friday & Saturday nights for their pinsa. Well, they were running a sandwich special in September that I just had to get my hands on so I made it a point to go there for lunch one afternoon, and now I'm hooked! I've purchased both the September and October panpinsa (they use the pinsa dough to make the sandwiches) and they are just so delicious and well constructed. Fresh ingredients, house made pesto and jams. You get a choice of side between chips, soup and potato salad. Their potato salad is delicious, and their soups change regularly (they also sound good though I've yet to try them). With the thought they've put into their monthly specials I can only assume the standard menu is just as delicious. The other thing I just had to try were the pinsa! I typically prefer Neapolitan style pizza, but since we don't have a true Neapolitan pizza place in Anchorage Roman style pizza will have to suffice. This Roman street food seems like it would be heavy, but the pizza crust is light & airy. Originale sells take & bake at home options during their business hours, but on the weekends they also host "Pinsa Nights" where you can get these delicious pizzas cooked in house to order. I've cooked mine at home on my Traeger grill, and they were very good. Getting them made in house though with a perfectly crispy crust is a great experience as well. Most notable thing about this deli is that they were recently visited by famous restauranteur, Guy Fieri. Hopefully they will make it onto an episode of Diners, Drive ins & dives. Regardless it's an honor to be recognized by Guy! If you're looking for some Italian comfort food, or some cured meats & cheeses from Italy then look no further than Originale! read more

We had been looking forward to visiting this place since we had seen it on DDD. The food sounded great. Just our type of environment. We stopped in a little after 11 AM and the place was empty. But by 1130, it had started to fill up. We ordered the La Puttanesca pizza. The counter person asked if we like spicy food. We both answered yes. The counter person was true to her word. The pizza was very spicy. In fact, it was so spicy that we really couldn't taste the ingredients that much. The heat was overwhelming. read more

What a treat. One of the better Italian sandwiches I've had. Looks like this place has been run by a family. The gal behind the order was kind and funny. Apparently they close when they run out of bread so go early. I'd be happy to recommend this place for anyone looking for flavor and fun. A little pricey for some bread and meat but i feel it's what everyone is doing now with inflation- the need to raise their prices. read more

What a find! After our cruise through Alaska, our flight ended up getting pushed a day, so we found ourselves wondering around Anchorage with nothing to do. I ordered one of their panini and the meat and cheese were great! It was a take-out and the bread was already soggy after 5min walk to my hotel unfortunately. I want to switch things up and post a positive review, and Originale is just the place for it. I had heard of it before, but didn't try it until my husband suggested it. I ordered online and walked to pick it up on my lunch break, as it is in a pretty convenient spot downtown, right between the courthouses and the 5th Ave mall. I ordered the Il Diavolo sandwich, and a Sicilian lemonade. The whole thing was a little pricy, but I chalk that up to the fact that a majority of the ingredients are made in house. Picking up was quick and easy and the woman behind the counter was very sweet. When I tell you this is the best sandwich I've ever had, I'm not exaggerating. Every aspect was on point, from the bread to the dressing to the cuts of meat. They clearly know what they're doing here. If you enjoy Italian-deli style sandwiches, I can't recommend Originale enough! read more

We placed an online order and picked it up via their curb-side pick-up parking spot. It was super fast and easy! Everything we ordered was delicious. Our take-out was mostly packed in paper boxes, except the salad and cannoli which were in plastic clam shells, and plastic forks for the potato salad. (I appreciate they seem to try to use paper/compostable where they can). The selection of Italian meats and cheeses to choose from was truly outstanding, we settled on the New York sandwich (pastrami and Mozzarella) and the Muffuletta (Salami, Spicy Coppa, Rosemary Ham, Mortadella, Provolone, Mozzarella, Muffuletta Spread). The cube of cheese on top of the sandwich is such a nice touch. We also got a caprese salad and a cannoli. I'll definitely be taking visitors here for a special lunch you can't get anywhere else in alaska! read more

In my whole existence in Anchorage, I've never tried this place and I have no idea why! This delicious place is located in the old Brown Bag building on D St. In the giant coffee land of AK, this was the best macchiato i've had. (if you don't know- a macchiato is only one shot of espresso with an equal amount of steamed milk). Service was amazing, coffee was amazing, and the food was SO GOOD. first time trying this place and it's absolutely amazing the sandwiches, the service I'll definitely come back

This place is legit Italian paninis! I had come here once before severa years ago. I just remember it being a little too spendy for regular visits. Today I came on a Saturday for lunch and there were a couple people sitting down and several people in line ordering. While I was waiting there was still a steady stream of people! I got the New York City panini which had pastrami and fresh mozzarella and a basil spread. I like that you can order half or full sandwiches for most. I ordered a half for $9 and it came with a potato salad, chips or soup. The basil spread was delicious had a lot of flavor to it. The bread was focaccia, it was thin and crispy. I would have liked more than one piece of mozzarella on each half. Even though I got a half they cut that in half so I had two pieces and was plenty of food for me. The bread had Italian herbs on top. I forgot to take a picture tho! I only had to wait 5-10 minutes and they were diligently slicing meat and making everything in the back behind the counter while one person cleaned tables and another took the orders. They also have a cheese meat cold counter and they have some Italian candies and other goodies to buy. You can also get pizzas to go that are frozen and trays of meats and cheese. read more

Dropped in for lunch w my boss earlier this week and had a delicious, filling meal! I heard the paninis were to die for so I got the zip Diavoletti - which is with pepperoni, salami, cheese and peppers. I liked the warm crispy bread and the meat was fresh, flavorful and amazing... although so potent I didn't get as much cheesy flavor as I would have liked. Even though it was only a half sandwich it was extremely filling - I actually only ate half of the half and took the rest home. Good thing because although the Sandwiches come w a "side" of soup... honestly I'd say that little cup is more of a sip than a side. The ambiance is super cute - lots of seating and very clean. Pretty authentic too as everyone in there was speaking Italian! All and all, I'd def go back... but will prolly switch it up and try the cold sandwiches. read more
