Went to Originale for the first time during lunch. Initial reaction was that the place is nice! They were clean, well laid out, organized - even have a cute fish named Lucky! The food is delicious. We got a muffuletta and a Favorito - half order with the soup of the day which was a sweet white potato and basil soup. The staff were very polite. You can tell they have regulars by the way they greeted some of the customers. Great experience! Will become a regular for sure. read more

Originale serves Italian hot/cold sandwiches and pinsa, as well as soups, salads, etc. The food is quite pricey but the taste helps to take some of the sting out. The cannolis are quite good as well! Be sure to check the hours before visiting, and try not to go too late because they run out of certain items/ingredients towards closing. I stumbled on this place in January... and just sampled the dessert "Creme Berle Cheesecake" ... SO SO AMAZING! Today I sampled the spicy special sandwich and the #9 - Favorito half $7.00 (prosciutto cotto, cheese, tomato and oregano), broccoli soup, and a slice of Walnut cake. The soup and desserts are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Don't get me wrong- the sandwiches are yum... but the soup and desserts is what I will be craving 24-7 now. Everything is fresh homemade and rotates availability. WHICH means I can try a new sandwich, soup, and dessert every week till my heart is content!! Favorite this time- The Broccoli soup- so so delicious! The noodles in it were a surprise... they were delicate and tasted buttery. 5 stars for the soup!! OH- and the little sample o' cheese on the toothpick in the to go box... such a delicious piece of cheese! It was all rich creamy and warm from the trip home in the warm box. Coulda eaten a whole block of "what-ever" kind o' cheese this was!! (I really want to eat my hubbies little sample... ALAS~I need him to LOVE this place too... so we can go frequently.) 20 bucks for lunch hurts. In Philly I could have gotten the same lunch for about $10, but this is Anchorage... Were it not for the price tag, I would have given 5 stars. I got the Il Capo panini, which was just shy of perfect (could have used a little more prosciutto). The seasonings were sensational. It was really 'excelente! Even better was the made-to-order almond cannoli. Dear goodness it was stunning, but the $4 price tag stung. I'm used to a buck fifty back home for a cannoli. I also got one of those lovely Lemon Italian sodas for 2 dollars. With tip, lunch set me back more than i expected. But it WAS really good. I've signed up for one of their monthly dinners... I can't wait to see what they do for the dinner hour. These folks certainly know how tickle the palate. I can't wait to try their other flavors of cannoli. How have I not been here before. Amazing food friendly staff and just a fun ambience. You will have to wait a while for your food but it's because it's cooked fresh what a crazy concept. Everything taste amazing. Price points are higher but that's what you get when you buy fresh food and have someone else make it for you. I frequent this location on average two times a month and would highly recommend it to anyone I know or see. They do close after lunch prior to any dinner plans you might have so keep that in mind. In the old Brown Bag location, the Originale lives up to my hopes and expectations! We loved the nutella latte, and the sandwiches made perfect leftovers too, we took a couple wedges with us hiking the next day and they tasted almost better than the day we got them! We also picked up a frozen pizza crust and look forward to using that this week. Perfect addition to the Anchorage sandwich market - I will be back and often, I hope. read more

I was delighted with the menu ... oh so many great choices, and the quality of the food .i had the caprese panini , a toasted focaccia bread with cheddar spread , fresh mozzarella +fresh basil +tomato +balsamic vinegar . The service and food were incredibly lackluster at Originale. The restaurant is a walk up to order panini place. On my latest visit the cashier asked if I'd like potato salad, soup, or chips with my meal and I asked the cashier what was the soup today and she rudely pointed to a small sign that was well hidden behind the numerous knickknacks displayed on the front counter. The cashier did the same for my friend I was dining with when they asked what the soup was. After ordering we sat down and got our paninis about 10 minutes later. I had ordered the caprese panini that had the mealiest mushy tomatoes I have ever consumed. The bread was also soft and cold in the middle making for an extra mushy texture. I ended up picking the tomatoes off but the panini was hardly salvaged since the bread wasn't well toasted. I also ended up finding a dark black hair on my sandwich that clearly wasn't one of my own red hair. After finishing our sandwiches my friend and I cleared our table and sat for just a moment more to finish drinking our water when the same cashier who checked us out came over and said "Do you need anything else? I have people waiting for a table." I can usually overlook discourteous service, but the mushy panini paired with the curt and uncaring response of the cashier definitely set in stone my desire not to ever return to Originale or recommend the place to others. I remember when the place first opened years ago and was so welcoming and the paninis were toasted to perfection, but it's obvious that service and food is a thing of the past. read more

Walking around on black friday looking for a new place to get food and fell upon this spot. When you first enter you'll notice a lot of Italian decor with a dozen or so bar top tables and a bar facing the outside windows. It has a real nice feel. We were there at breakfast but they only really had one option for the morning which was basically a standard Italian panini with eggs, bacon and tomato on it. The sandwich lacked any real flavor at all and to charge $15 for a panini it should probably be the best one you've ever had, not even close. The staff lacked any kind of personality during our visit. No smiles, no welcoming conversations, just straight faces and answers only when asking a question. Pretty uncomfortable to be honest. The place was clean and decorated nicely but when the food isn't very well executed and the service is subpar then what's the point. There's much better choices for food at half the cost and many times the charm and enjoyment, don't waste you time at this place. read more

So tasty and authentic! It is a little pricey but you get what you pay for. Their espresso is amazing. A half sandwich is actually two slices, and a whole is 4. I was content with a half sando. We both got paninis, the favorito and special of the house. The favorito is named that for a reason If you're a coffee fan don't pass a cup up! Arguably the best in town. The potato salad was very good, simple yet satisfying and not too mayonnaisey. The small portion was enough to share with another person. I also tried one of the special sides, the Caesar salad. I walked in and thought, "Aww, what a quaint little deli." And it went down hill from there. So I ordered the Originale, and since it was named after the store I figured it was the their signature item. What I got was bread soaked in olive oil with thin meat and cheese in between. That's it. This is an Italian deli, where is the lettuce, tomato, onion, spices, oil and vinegar? So basically my $15 bucks for a sandwich got me next to nothing. On a good note, the bread and the mozzarella were really good and I just peeled everything off of it and just ate that. The bread, I don't know if it was homemade but I am fairly certain it was, is equally or better than you would find in a pricey Italian restaurant. I will also say the ingredients are fresh. Real fresh. And not what you would get at other "delis". The meats I have to come straight from Italy, the mozzarella homemade and the basil leaf home grown. That fresh. However...."Service with a sneer". The owner actually seemed put out that I was there to spend my money. He was abrupt, short, and turned his back on me. Which I find rude. Go figure. And this is why I give it only two stars. The attitude of the owner. ***********Edit*** (other content as well)********** Aaaand just got into an argument with the owner because he can't take a little criticism. What a tool. And when I tried to explain all he did was talk over me. Now I will say that he did say something, in all honesty, that had some merit. Why did I not say something to him? In my defense it was because the menu was a little vague and I had never been in the shop before. That coupled with his Pisa poor attitude and you can see why I didn't bring it up to him. Now prior to the argument I did observe a gentleman order what appeared to be a tiny bit more of what I was looking for in an Italian sandwich. But don't expect a hoagie/sub type deli sandwich here. The fare is more unique. There was a woman there, maybe his wife, who was very pleasant. She greeted everyone with a smile and talked to you like you were friends. A nice Italian lady. Love this place, one of my favorite sandwich shops in the city. They make the best panini, hands down! Perfect focaccia, nice and crisp on the outside and chewy inside, and well-seasoned, filled with delicious Italian meats and cheeses. I love how they decorate the plate with a little oil, salt, and pepper, so you can dip your sandwhich in it as you go for some extra added flavor. I've only tried one soup there, the roasted red pepper and ricotta, but it was yummy, and I'm normally not a big fan of either ingredient. I'm not sure if it's a regular offering. But it was definitely freshly made and so savory. The portions are great--a half panini is plenty to fill me up, and a whole for leftovers when I just can't get enough. The prices are reasonable (at least for the food--the imported sundries are really expensive). The service is friendly, and I enjoy listening to the family who works there speak Italian as they prepare the foods in the open kitchen. They contribute a lot to the homey atmosphere, the eclectic and colorful decor is a pleasure to sit in for a while. They don't have a lot of seats, so they are never packed or loud. All in all, an excellent place for a delicious lunch. read more

4.5 stars. Quite possibly the best cake I've had in town. Not too sweet, the berry cake I had this particular day was moist, very well balanced, not full of sugar like what you'd see in many american cakes. I am impressed. Personally, this is better than the cake studio downtown, because you can taste other things besides sugar. The macchiato was on point, the sandwich was great, the salad was wonderful. Wow! What a hidden gem! Authentic, made to order and fresh ingredients. Felt like I was back in Italy. Besides their great menu, they also offer organic and fresh local produce, fish/meat and ready to go meals, as well as coffees and olive oils. The focaccia bread is a total win. Really yummy cappuccinos! They use sweet Italian espresso. Five stars for the cappuccinos alone! We drank ours while we waited for our muffuletta and half caprese salad. The sandwich is made with a square piece of fresh focaccia bread, so when cut, you get 4 pieces of hefty sandwich. Only 2 of the pieces are pictured bc I started chowing down right away. I only needed 1 piece to feel full, but started eating another bc it was so tasty. They are perfectly rich, panini style sandwiches. The amount and quality of food make it a fair $22 for a full serving that is easily split between 2 people. The salad was simple and lightly dressed, which perfectly complimented the heavy sandwich.
