Kind of a strange/ confused experience. Good food (especially the pickled veggies) but the proportions are small for the price. Service was friendly and good but very casual for a restaurant with some pretensions to upscale dining. Menus are on deep red paper with black lettering, lighting is dim and the decor is dark. Many folks were using their phones to be able to read it. The bar seemed incomplete- one of our party requested a common blended scotch- they didn't have any blended options, only single malts. Hopefully these issues are just growing pains- I really want them to succeed. We need good restaurants in Roslindale. read more

The restaurant has a lovely, pet friendly patio and as soon as we arrived, the server brought out a big bowl of cold water for my pup. We were there for lunch and the food we chose was excellent. The dressing on the Farro and fresh herb salad was delicious and it was very filling. The parmesan crusted baby kale melt was yummy, especially because the bread was so crunchy. Food was very BLAND and the menu needs to be updated. I wanted the glaze ribs and falafel and it no loner available on their menu. Please update the menu and include more entrees, apps and sides, menu is away to limited. We took forever to decide on what to eat. Our waiter was great and the place is cute and cozy, Steak frites and French fries were good. Stay away from the brownie, it was the worse ever. I love to try new places ,we decided to give it a try. the appetizers were not the typical, we got the rubbed chicken wings and others dishes. however the wings flavor was amazing! the staff super attentive and friendly. drinks were also interesting. Live 7 minutes away and finally got there tonight after booking a reservation this afternoon. We were greeted warmly. The environment inside is kind of dark but warm. My husband and I are pescatarians. We each had a drink and we shared one "bite", two "small plates and one large plate. I had their version of a Moscow mule with passion fruit. It was good but not exciting. I wish they ad more adventurous drinks. Our bite was the the feta and golden raisin fritters - a delicious mix of sweet and slightly spicy. The two small plates were the carrots and cauliflower (they left out the bacon for us); but were also delicious. Our main came right after they delivered the smaller plates which felt rushed. It was the cavatelli and it was tasty but the sauce was a bit heavy for the other ingredients. My husband had the chocolate Bundt cake and honestly it was pretty dry. The menu is pretty small so I hope they expand it with more like the bites and small plates which were the highlight. I know they are still fairly new so I'm sure they are working out the kinks with the service and hopefully won't deliver all of the food at the same time in the future. Had dinner here and had to try the brunch! Highly recommend the tofu and mushroom fried rice and steak frites. Cocktails were good too- some interesting ones and lots of cocktail options. Big plus for brunch - lots of milk alternatives. My oat milk cappuccino was very nice! The shakshuka and breakfast fried rice had great flavors and were beautiful! They've got a great fresh vibe with an open yet comfy space. We were there early so not super busy. All the staff were kind and attentive. We'll be back to try more! read more

I'm a nearby Rozzident -- about a 10-minute walk away -- and recently paid my first visit to this much-anticipated new spot in Roslindale. AMBIENCE We were warmly welcomed by the owner, Virginia, who seated us at a banquette 2-top. The brick-walled space with high ceilings is warm and inviting. The music selection was fine; the volume would have been fine too if the room had been full -- but, with only four parties at 7 on a Sunday night, it was a little loud. We weren't fans of the three giant bright digital art screens, which -- especially with the Ramada Inn-quality art on display -- worked against the otherwise-wonderful ambience of the room to create a somewhat antiseptic effect. In fact, we since have learned that there are plans to add two more of these giant screens, to which we say: Abort! Abort! There simply are too many wonderful artists in Roslindale and environs to excuse littering the walls of this space with this canned digital art solution. SERVICE The waitstaff were very friendly and seemed to be knowledgeable -- and genuinely enthusiastic -- about the menu. The dishes arrived promptly -- and our server circled back at timely intervals to ask about our needs and how we found everything. There is not yet quite the confidence and polish and, dare I say, swagger in the service to match the obvious ambitions of this restaurant -- but, hopefully, that will come. FOOD & WINE We generally start with a cocktail but were not sufficiently inspired by anything on the menu. We split octopus to start and had scallops and steak frites for our mains. The steak frites and the octopus were wonderfully and flavorfully prepared. Worth noting: I asked for the steak to be medium rare -- and it was precisely that! Often not the case. The scallops were good -- just not quite as successful as the others. We both had an Oregon pinot noir that I would describe as "fine but not great." In fact, there were only three reds by the glass -- and one of them was unavailable. I hope the restaurant will significantly expand their wine selection -- but, if there are only three reds by the glass, then obviously all three should be in ready supply. We did not opt for dessert -- too full! -- but, I was enticed by the pumpkin-maple semolina cake. And, as a lover of amaro, I was heartened to see three high-quality amaros -- including Fernet! -- among the offerings. :: :: :: A final note... Midnight Morning's website and its communications / social media in general is pretty awful. Note to the owners: You have a great story to tell. Please do a better job of telling it. :: :: :: Midnight Morning is a restaurant with promise. Indeed, looking at how Midnight Morning has tweaked its menus over the first few months, it's clear that this is a restaurant that is willing to evolve and grow. That's a good thing! We love this place. They just opened about two months ago, we've already gone four times. The staff is very welcoming, and accommodating. The food is reliably very good. We love sampling different things each time from their snacky Bites menu and also their small plates. For the larger plates, we have not gone wrong with any of their offerings. We have, however, repeatedly enjoyed sharing the dry rubbed chicken that has a delicious blend of smoky and citrus flavors, while the sweet potato purée unexpectedly is the perfect complement. The drink menu is fun and adventurous. Just try the Captain Crunch cocktail; you won't be disappointed. We adored the old Birch Street Bistro, which used to be a neighborhood landmark. In Midnight Morning, the neighborhood has a worthy successor. read more

My wife and I were big fans of the Birch Street Bistro which was previously in this location and had promised when the new restaurant opened, we would try it out. We were sorely disappointed. They had a very limited menu which did not offer us many good choices. We had appetizers (small bites) and entrees (large bites) which were OK, but not great and certainly not worth what we were billed for. Decided to give them another chance by ordering desert, but that caused an issue itself with our server (Joshua) only taking my wife's desert order and walking away without even asking if I wanted anything myself. We ended up splitting her desert instead of having to wait for them to make another desert for me. Was shocked at the size of the bill and that they charged so much for mediocre food. What we ate was worth half of what they charged. We kept our promised to try it, but we won't be back. Advise to the restaurant, offer a larger menu and train your staff to pay attention to all of the dinner guests. read more

Came here to celebrate our 2yo's birthday with some family over brunch. Finding a family-friendly dining experience is always a challenge, but this place is close by and the menu looked good. As soon as we sat down, the hostess came over with toys for the kids, which was a huge help and kept them occupied while the adults looked over the menu and ordered. I was just really blown away by the thoughtfulness of this small gesture. And the food arrived and it was great! The pancakes were a big hit for all ages, as were the adults' entrees (croquettes, avocado and pepper jam sandwich, Turkish breakfast plate, and breakfast fried rice). We have already made another brunch reservation and look forward to trying dinner too! read more

Food was good. Enjoyed the eggs bene and the crab cake eggs bene. Cocktails need work! No garnishes whatsoever on the bloody mary, (what's a bloody without the garnishes!?) and the mimosa was also uninspiring. The ambiance was decent, but it was empty (but it was Xmas eve lunch). On whole, Midnight Morning seems off to an ok start, but the restaurant needs a bit more of a vibe and some seasoned bartenders and wait staff to lift it up a bit. Hoping it can get there. read more

Have come on 3 occasions, for dinner, just apps and drinks, and brunch. Service is fast, atmosphere is relaxed, and food is good. Best things I've had are the smoked bluefish and kale small plates (both excellent and the smoked fish could def make an appearance for brunch) and the breakfast fried rice (truly delicious). They have nice gluten free, veg, and vegan options. When I was here for brunch a family came in and pulled a complimentary game off the center counter and played candy land while they ate, it was very cute. read more

Finally made it here for an early evening of wine and small plates. Food -- Brussels sprouts, salad with olives and oranges, chicken wings -- all really good and will order again. Ambiance is pleasant enough, but confusing. Is it modern or country kitsch? Stack of colorful mugs is joyful and should be carried out throughout. We liked the wall art (contemporary) but then there were touches of country such as a pitcher of flowers. The fabric napkins were nice and appreciated, but silverware was cheap and dated. Staff were friendly but need more training, person who delivered food to table could not explain what the sauces with chicken wings were. Our first glass of wine (which we liked) was almost humorously tiny; the second one was significantly larger. Anyway, still some snags and miss Birch Street Bistro. But we will return. read more

We've tried MM a couple of times now. They seem to be having some issues getting to consistency, so we'll wait to return. Atmosphere is ok, but honestly they could have left it the way it was from the previous owner where it felt a bit more upscale. Staff is friendly. Food is fine but not fabulous, and the menu is really limited. On our first try there were no salad options on the menu, but happy to see they have now added a couple. Some of the mains are decent, but the sides a bit odd. Hoping they hit their groove soon. We'll go back and try again in a few months. read more
