I'll keep this rant short. These people are either very inept, or they have a store policy in place to rip customers off! I had used them in the past for a couple of minor repairs to my Tundra, because I have the ability to walk home from their store. Somehow the original quotes always had the ability to almost double, but like I said, they were minor repairs so not too painful. I brought it in yesterday to have them diagnose my "check engine" light. They called 30 min later with a quote for $950 for a part they said would fix the problem and would take about an hour or so to install. I called Toyota dealer to check the price of the part, and they said about $350. So help me with the math, folks? If it only takes about an hour to install, and the part is $350....you see where I'm going....$600 for labor? The finale: I brought my vehicle to Yost, and they found and repaired a small leak in the emission system for $96. wow read more

Having worked at auto parts stores in the past, I'm pretty familiar with the loads of crap a lot of car repair shops can try to pull on unsuspecting customers. Yes, many of them do overcharge and yes, many of them will tell you something is wrong with your vehicle when there really isn't a problem quite that expensive. Admittedly, Midas should mostly be the kind of place you get oil changes, new belts, and tires- it's not a specialty shop. But I've always found them to be up front with me, honest, and cheap. I recommended that friends go here, and they also had good experiences. They have good customer service, they explain what's going on and give you options for when or if you'd like to fix what they find. It can take a while, as they're a very busy location, but that speaks to the fact that they do good work. read more

In my opinion, you should not go here. I got a nail in my tire and was close by so I just pulled in and asked for a patch up. It took them about 30 minutes to assess that, yes, I do have a nail in my tire. The guy told me I couldn't get a patch up and, instead, should buy two brand new tires "for balance." He also told me that state law only allows patch ups in the middle three inches of the tire surface where it meets the road. I later found out from another mechanic that this was an absolute lie. After the first guy failed to sell me two tires, the manager stepped in with a better price for one tire. How does that happen in ten minutes. Weird! When I told them that I'd rather shop around and get a second opinion, the manager then pushed harder with the sell. I got an uncomfortable, creepy vibe from the manager and then looked on yelp to see if anyone else had a similar experience. And, alas, it looks as though I am not the only one. After a few off experiences with this Midas, I vowed to never go there again. Granted, my experiences were from about 4 years ago, and maybe if there's been new management and a new crew in place, things might be different... but I'd rather not chance it. My first experience with this location was when I was going to get my state inspection. I asked the Jiffy Lube down the street if they knew of anywhere that did state inspections, and they directed me to Midas. It was a Sunday. Me and my boyfriend at the time went to the Midas, and thought it looked a little dead, but walked in the store... where there was no one to be found... and as we're putting two and two together, we realize the store isn't opened, just as the alarm starts blaring. So we leave, and I call the police to let them know we didn't break into the place, that the door was unlocked. Unlocked! Pretty unprofessional. Not long after that pleasant experience I was having some brake issues, and this Midas location was pretty convenient to where I was living. I decided to give them a second chance and drop my car off there so they could take a look at it the next morning. I parked my car, started filling out the envelope for the overnight drop box, put the key in the envelope and dropped it through the slot on the garage door, started to walk away... then did a double take back... and noticed the garage wasn't even closed all the way. There was about a 2" gap between the garage door and the ground, meaning I walked back to the garage door, bent down and retrieved my key and all my information written on that envelope. I think I used them for an oil change once, and I vaguely remember them attempting to sale other mostly unneeded services (which is common in these types of chains), but otherwise the service was highly forgettable. Since most of my bad experiences didn't actually involve interaction with the people working there, I decided to give it 2 stars and give them a little benefit of the doubt. That being said, the first two experiences were unprofessional enough to make me not want to leave my car with them overnight ever. And if they have such simple oversights, I feel like that might reflect oversights in their area of expertise (auto repair) as well. read more

Just don't do it. I asked them for an oil change and to look at a coolant leak because I wanted to sell it. When I got it back and asked about the coolant leak, the guy said..."IDK, you said you were going sell it, right?" Took the car to Brake Check and they found and repaired the coolant leak. A time before this I asked for an oil change and instead got a my car back with lots of white smoke coming from the tail pipe. The manager took responsibility, felt bad and gave a me a coupon for a free oil change. Thought it was a one off---it wasn't. There are some other instances I won't mention here. All I will say is that I should've taken this car somewhere else and I'm kicking myself for all the time and money wasted at this place.... DON'T. DO. IT. read more

I was already expecting bad service considering most of the reviews are horrible, & let me tell you the bad reviews live up to the hype. The guy tried to charge me 60 for a quote & I said no, he said "okay you can leave" I changed my camshaft sensor for 25$ from autozone after they quoted me 974$.. I am not mad bc I never paid them and already expected terrible service but good grief guys please go to another shop. I like this place a lot. I have mostly come out of convenience, because this location is walking distance to my boyfriend's house and I can just go chill over there while I'm waiting for my car to be fixed. I don't have very many problems with my car because I don't drive it much, but maybe once every 8 months - year I have some issue that just really needs taking care of. I've taken my car here for brakes once, for a flat tire another time, for a bunch of problems I had more recently, and today for a strange wiring issue I had with my front headlight. Each time I've been treated with courtesy and informed of expenses and the amount of time services will take in a very up-front manner. They work really quickly, too. I think the people who work here are really honest and so I trust them to take good care of my car. I took my car in a couple months ago because I thought the brakes were messed up or something. Turns out they weren't, but there was a leak in my power steering fluid, so they fixed that, and also informed me that one of my tires had a nail in it and then another one needed replacing. Between all that stuff, and an oil change, the bill came out to almost $700. The guy in charge recommended some other services, but I told him I just wanted to get the services that were really necessary because my car is mostly just around to get me from a to b. Anyway, even though there was rather a lot of work, my car was ready to be picked up in about 4 hours, which is great (it's so annoying to have to leave your car somewhere overnight or for a few days). Today's experience was really awesome. I took my car in at about 8:30 in the morning because one of my headlights wasn't working. The guy who works at the front (I feel bad for not knowing his name because he's always there, but he's really nice and reminds me of Matthew McConnaughey in Dazed and Confused) said they could look at it and fix everything up in 20 minutes, so I decided to wait (and get a cup of actually decent coffee, of course). After maybe 10 minutes, the guy let me know that my headlight didn't need replacing, it was a simple wiring problem that they had fixed, and that one of my tires was a little low on gas, so they fixed that for me, too. The charge? Nothing. I was so impressed! I must have looked visibly shocked becuase he explained that since nothing needed replacing, they wouldn't charge for labor. And I said okay... I will definitely come back here for future car repair work, at least as long as the current management is still in charge. They are really friendly and not intimidating like some other mechanic places, they work fast, and their prices are reasonable. read more

I recently moved to Austin and part of the hassle of a move is finding your go-to trusted mechanic. I stopped in to the Midas on Guadalupe a few months ago to have my AC looked at and Ned was not only genuinely friendly but started me on a path to beating the heat. I've had to stop in a few times since to work out all the kinks of my AC system, and every time Ned takes the best care of me and makes sure that I understand exactly what's going on and gets my full consent before doing anything. I've been into more auto shops that I can count where the mechanic sees that I'm a woman and takes advantage of my time and money, doing work that I never asked for, assuming I don't know anything etc. I'm still working toward feeling at home here, but it's so nice to have Ned as my trusted mechanic that I can rely on anytime I need! read more

Back-story: My friends brake light was out, so we decided to go to Midas to get a quote on how much it would cost to fix it. We went in and were greeted immediately. After asking for a quote, the serviceman said we should check out O'Reillys--which was about a mile away--and simply buy the bulb since otherwise we would have to wait 45 minutes. He also mentioned that they might even fix it for free for us! In the end, he said it was a cheaper option then getting it fixed at Midas. We took his advice and saved $25. Bait-and-Switch - We had a Groupon for a full synthetic oil change and, upon arrival, were told we needed to pay more than 2x the Groupon value for 'special' synthetic oil for a 2015 VW Jetta. Read the fine print to the representative, which said nothing about additional costs for European cars. Only for additional quarts of oil or specialty filters. He wouldn't budge. Everyone I met was courteous, kind, helpful, and made me feel comfortable. Even as a guy who knows a little about cars, just about every other mechanic shop I've been to has managed to make me feel uncomfortable, under-appreciated, and stupid. At Midas everyone I talked to was eager to help, explain, clarify, and did so in a nice, cheerful way. They began by agreeing to give me a ride to Starbucks while they worked on the car, and I was there within 5 minutes. The guy who drove me seemed really happy to do so and was very talkative and friendly. Like another reviewer said, they priced out every possible option for me, but were completely realistic and understanding when I chose just the few things I needed. No pressure, just lots of information. All the work they did was fantastic, and my car is quiet as a mouse now. They even adjusted a squeaky belt (which they admitted didn't need to be replaced yet) and made my battery stop rattling, topped up my fluids, all for free. I don't really know for sure how the prices compared to the industry, but they seemed reasonable and I was allowed to use two coupons. Boo yah Kat! All in all, the most painless and satisfying mechanic experience I've had. read more

They told me I needed to come in at least 3 and a half hours before closing time and not only were they unwilling to fit me in, but they would not even allow me to make an appointment for another day. I asked about other locations and the employee told me he didn't know and I should look it up on my phone. They were so dismissive and had no intention to be of help in any. I honestly have never written any review on a place. But this one really was something special I go in because I need new front break pads and 1 rotor. I told them don't change the other because the life of a rotor isn't based on the life on the breaks and there isn't anything wrong with it. Well they change both and both rotors and sets of break pads. Then they tell me there is an issue with my shocks so I ask to talk to the guy that said that he proceeded to say he didn't say that. So they changed a rotor that didn't need to be changed tried to sell me something I didn't need and tried to make it 1200. Then after it is all said and done I bring both rotors into the store the messed up one and the good one and nobody in there could explain to me why it needed to be changed. Honestly this place will lie to you to give you things you clearly don't need and they can't explain why this place is a waste of money for anyone who wants to go there. I can only image how many people go there in hopes of an honest business and get lied to. Legit wasting peoples money on things that do not need to be fixed. And that doesn't include the tires they said I needed because mine were "bald" they will lie to you and then when you call them out and ask them they can't explain any of it. read more

PLEASE NEVER GO HERE. I used to go to this Midas for every oil change and tire rotation because they are near my house and the service wasn't bad. However, this last time was a big mess. FIRST OF ALL, they took an hour and a half to do my oil change and rotation, even though I had an appointment, and THEN they didn't even put the lugnuts back onto my rear driver side tire. Yup. You read that right. They didn't attach the tire. It took them an hour and a half to not even finish the full job. The tire popped off while I was driving. I have called multiple times, but they will not give me their insurance information or their manager's contact. Neither the owner nor the manager has contacted me to even apologize for the severe negligence that could have COST ME MY LIFE. They had the audacity to offer me a $100 store credit instead of paying for the damages. This place is absolutely disgusting. I will never go back, and I hope to save other people from being injured or killed by their incompetence. read more

What can I say.... Tried it out the first time because it was a cheap special for alignment.. One thing though, you CANT upsale to someone that works in the same field. Was told that I had bent a strut, lower control arm, and wheel bearings were shot and wheel bearings needed to be pressed in. Even though I knew they didn't need to I just let you try anyways. I took my 2013 Honda Fit in for an oil change (the first oil change I have had on it). Anyway, the guy at the counter said he suspects that the new Honda Fit requires synthetic oil. When I got home I checked the manual, and it says it recommends non-synthetic oil, so I was upset and called and chewed the guy out a bit. He pushed back and said that the oil cap says 0W-20 (which I checked and it does) and that it had to be synthetic. I did some reading online, and it appears that there are few to no 0W-20 oils that are not synthetic, so the guy ended up being correct. I had a good (but limited) experience here. read more

So... I had to have my starter replaced a couple of months ago after it stopped working. This was the first time I ever had any car trouble, after brining it to Austin, and of course being stranded and getting the car towed for the first time can be a bit nerve-wrecking. The staff are very pleasant and always eager to explain what needs to be done to people like me who have little understanding of vehicles. They can even do price comparisons with your dealer to see if you are getting a better deal there or not. It is a bit expensive, but I'd rather get things done the right way the first time instead of paying less money and not getting a good quality products and service. read more

I came in because my tire was leaking and it took about 30 minutes until he came back in to tell me I was leaking from my tire sensor. He told me it was $80 and that I had to replace it. I told him no and he came back and magically found this $12 kit that he found in the back"junk pile" that can repair my tire. They were trying to take advantage of me because I'm in college. I went in for a simple oil change and it took over two hours. Based on the conversations that I overheard while waiting, I should have asked for my keys back and peeled away. I tricked myself into thinking that since this was just a basic oil change, and that I had passed state inspection a month prior, that there wouldn't be any issues. After about an hour of waiting, the receptionist came out and said that I would also need new air and cabin filters. (Fine. Just do it. I've already waited this long...) Another fifteen minutes goes by; there is no coffee in the coffee pot, and some awful true crime story on the TV (how ironic). Another guy comes out and explains that my car requires synthetic oil, which will cost double. "Fine. Do what you gotta do." Another thirty minutes goes by, at the end of which I see my car being backed out of the garage and into a handicapped spot. "Great," I'm thinking. "This must mean we are almost out of here." Wrong. After about ten more minutes of watching my car not being worked on, and other customers cashing out, I glanced over at the receptionist, who said, "We're still waiting on an air filter." Well, the fact that they didn't have the part, and that it would take all this additional time to acquire it, would have been nice to know in the first place -- I would have just done the air filter another day if I had known that this was the cause of the delay. Finally, I see a guy go out to the car and replace the air filter, and he comes back in with my keys and hands them to the receptionist. "Here are the keys for the CR-Z... oh! He's here?" Yes, sir. Yes, I am here. I have been here. Thank you for being aware. I pay $112 for my basic oil change, take my keys, and head out to my car only to see that the driver-side window is wide open. It's a rainy day outside, and they were so considerate as to take it out of the garage while waiting on an air filter delivery, and they didn't have the presence of mind to roll up the window. So, ultimately, the oil change took forever and was over-priced, they do not keep air filters on hand, do not inform customers whether or not parts are in stock before making them wait, and the interior of my car is covered in water. I have an older truck. I asked these guys to work on radiator, electrical, transmission issues. They did a great job. And every time was ready when it was supposed to be.
