I love this place, it's the only place in Austin. I will take my car for an oil change because of the friendly transparent service and good prices. Every time I've been I feel like they genuinely want to help me and not just make a buck. The atmosphere is also really welcoming towards women which is not always the case with auto shops. When I confronted him that that made me very uncomfortable to speak to a customer that way he continued to yell and curse at me. Never coming here again. When I drove to work yesterday, I heard something dragging under my car, so during my break I went to Tarrytown Texaco. Nate and another employee, whose name I didn't catch immediately put my car on a jack and replaced the two clips that had fallen off a car part. It took less than 10 minutes and both were extremely professional and friendly. Also, several months ago, I was having trouble filling up my bicycle tire. After a negative experience 30 minutes earlier at Newberry's in Rollingwood, I revectored to this auto inspection station. There aren't many Texaco stations left, so finding one with full service is unbelievable. One person was ahead of me when I called and I only had to wait about 5 minutes after I arrived to start the inspection process. The waiting room was mostly period sixties-- small but comfortable--with about the only updates being a small flat panel TV as well as Wi-Fi. One customer was waiting to finish up a tire rotation on his 90s 4Runner with the mechanic while the inspector checked out my car. My interactions with the staff, as well as those I observed with other customers, were polite and respectful. Which is important even if it's just a tire rotation or a state inspection. I was in and out of here before I knew it, and back on to my Saturday. Because Saturdays are important to everyone. As an FYI, I was told they do all types of mechanical work here with the exception of transmissions. I'll be back next year, Tarrytown Texaco. Because you treat people right. read more

Nice little service station in the middle of Tarrytown. It's been very convenient for me. Nothing to complain about this place. Service wasn't amazing but wasn't terrible either. They were friendly enough and it sounded like exactly what they were doing. Fair pricing and never super pushy. I just got an oil change when I went. I asked them to look at my brakes to see if there was anything wrong with it as it made some squeaky noises and they took a look at it and saw there was nothing wrong with it. Didn't charge me extra for that. Just some notes: -They don't offer full services on Saturdays, I went in on a Saturday to see if they can work on my brakes but they couldn't do that but they do still offer oil changes -They have wifi, didn't try it out but there is wifi -First come, first serve -It gets really busy late afternoon when people start getting out of work so fair warning read more

Went to Tarrytown Texaco today for a state inspection. I am new to Texas so I was curious as to how it is done here. The person who did the inspection, Michael Ferric, was informative as well as quite personable. Not only did he explain the inspection process, he told me where to get the best burger in town! Even though there were a couple people ahead of me, I was finished in about 30 minutes. Surly service in the garage. Tried to get in several times, different days, different times of day, only to be repeatedly turned away because they are too busy or asked in a challenging tone "how long I want to wait" like I'm asking for something unreasonable or showing up right before close. Literally, I have gotten this in the morning, at midday, and in the afternoon. The tone of voice I get when asking them if they can do a service is basically equivalent to what I'd have gotten if I had asked them to lend me money. Awful customer service. Guys are rude and full of themselves. Will never bother again. read more

I forgot I had ever been here before. Tarrytown Texaco is just up the street from where I work, so after putting off an oil change in my beater Honda for literally months I decided to bite the bullet and give them a try. I called ahead to find out how much they charge and when the best time to come in was. They told me oil changes are charged based on how many quarts of oil, but for a regular oil change it usually ran between $50-60, or $60-70 for a synthetic. They don't take appointments and usually got busy around lunchtime but coming in around 8-9am usually guaranteed the fastest turnaround. It just so happened to be 8:50am when I called so I hopped in the car and drove over. At 9:34am I am sitting back at my desk, car fully serviced, and it only cost me $41. The guys at the shop were super friendly and didn't try to sell me any crazy packages or upgrades. Car is zipping around as happily as a 15-year-old car can! read more

My cars break failure light was on and the breaks where hitting the floor.The breaks were soft.I brought the car here to get fixed.I was told my breaks were fine..the light was just a "bulb" that goes on when your breaks are bad..but even though my pedal hit the floor floor my breaks where "fine".and it was nothing to worry about. The guy who runs the shop here seems a bit moody and picky about what he wants to work on.The people are nice enough but something is off..I tried to explain that hey my breaks suck..I need them fixed..but it was like talking to a wall.I mean who wants to drop 350.00 450.00 unless you have no breaks and do not want to die or kill someone because your breaks wont work...place is weird...Avoid... A simple we dont wanna work on your car would have been ok...and saved a lot of time. read more

I do not like taking my car anywhere else. Even though I've moved down south, I've found that I can take a bus to work when dropping off my car. That's how awesome these people are. I've been going to them forever and don't plan on switching, ever. They are very classic old school service-like. They'll treat you right. I'll usually service my car for routine stuff on Saturday mornings and walk across the street to grab some coffee. After relaxing for 30-45 minutes, my car is ready to go. I'll also go in once a month for a full service gas stop - which is a great treat both for me and my car - and these guys do the best job. They truly care about you and your car. They don't ever try to upsell you or try to convince you that your car needs a procedure that it doesn't need. Yes, it is a little more expensive than the nearest express cheap oil change place or the place that has an advertised special for tune ups or tire rotations -- but you're paying for excellent service and no bull, which is definitely worth it! read more

I went in for an inspection, and not only did the entire process go by smoothly, I also enjoyed really nice and down to earth conversation with the other guys in the shop. They even offered me some ice cold water because of the 100+ heat outside! But more importantly, they told me about how I could save time at Auto title transfer offices. Tarrytown Texaco is a family owned business in the Tarrytown neighborhood of West Austin. The family that owns it is great about hiring high school students for the work at the counter and at the full service stations. Around back is Cesar's, another local business that hand washes cars. If you don't feel like paying a lot for a car wash though, there's a no-touch car wash around back that is about $4. This Texaco is a locally owned and operated business that you can feel good about supporting-the owners are supporters and donors for programs at Austin High School, and in many other ways support their local community. These people are a bit on the pricey side but you get a type of local neighborhood service that you just don't see anymore. They're also usually pretty busy with long time customers which makes me feel like they're dependable. I've been here to get oil changes and annual inspections. I also really like being able to walk over to the Howson Library to pass the time if I'm waiting. If you live nearby and aren't looking for a dirt cheap garage, this may be your place. read more

I used to have a really beat-up VW (that I do not miss). These guys helped me with everything from fuses to its ultimate demise.... the engine. If you do need repairs, they are not cheap, but they are fast. They fixed my fuel pump last minute on a Friday so I could get out of town. I recently took my car into the Tarrytown Texaco to have my A/C fixed, as it was not blowing cold air. The repairman told me that I would need to have my entire A/C system replaced and it would cost around $2500. I found this a little extreme for a car that was only 10 years old and had no prior A/C issues, so I took the car for a second option to the Lambs on Far West. Later that evening Lambs informed me that there was a broken valve which had caused all the freon to leak out, resulting in no cold air. They replaced the valve and filled the freon which cost $275. I am not sure if this was mechanical inexperience or purely malicious intent by the Tarrytown Texaco, but either way I hope it can be a warning to others who have used them for auto repair. read more
