I only like sweet wines. This winery was recommended for their Dessert Wine - Black Monukka. I tried two wines, the Black Monukka was the sweetest. It smells and tastes like creme brulee and has a burnt sugar after taste. No one ever answers the phone or responds to messages. We were members of their wine club for a couple years. After moving we tried several times over two weeks to contact someone about our next shipment. When someone did answer the phone, all they did was take our name and number and offered to have the wine club manager call back. This happened a couple times but mostly the phone rings, no answer, and all I could do was leave a message. After two weeks of trying to cancel the shipment, and even messaging/commenting on their Facebook, my card was charged and the wine was shipped (to an address we don't live at). Two days later, Mauricio, the wine club manager, finally emailed (not a return phone call) to tell us it was too late. Once I finally spoke to Mauricio over the phone, he could only offer an insincere apology and the excuse that "we are only able to respond so quickly." It has been TWO WEEKS! I can't imagine that this small winery is so inundated with calls and emails that it takes two weeks to respond to one message. Poor excuse for even poorer customer service. I didn't want to leave the wine club, just change my address but I can't stick with a company that treats "members" like this. Now I'm waiting for my refund, and have left the wine club, or at least I hope so! So while this might be a nice place to stop in and taste, I would not recommend joining the club! read more

We visited in June 2017 and fell in love with the tasting room that was their home. It has a beautiful outdoor area with a huge swing and it's absolutely charming. The wine selection is savory but my fav is the black mannuka which is like a port wine... I absolutely love ports so this was perfect to my pallet. This is a dog friendly vineyard! read more

We went on a little mini vacation to Cambria and thought we would hit a couple of wineries while we were in the area. Our Hotel gave us complimentary tastings to two wonderful wineries, Rotta was one of them. We were surprised to learn it is one of the oldest wineries in the Paso Robles area. They were preparing for their members pick up party on a very rainy Saturday when we arrived. We had to jump over puddles to get to the tasting room. We met Annie our server and she was absolutely wonderful. The wines were excellent and they had a bonus pour, a 2005 Merlot. My two favorite things to say when wine tasting are "Can I revisit the...." and "do you have anything else open today?" it was so good that we decided to buy a bottle. Then she realized that she was pouring the last one. We ended up buying a bottle of 04 merlot instead which proved to be just as good. There are so many wineries in the Paso area, it is hard to decide which ones to visit. I would strongly recommend putting Rotta on your list! read more

Whew, this is one place that you can start or finish at, since the pours are mighty and in great numbers! I believe it was something like 10-13 wines you can choose to sample! We love stopping here since it's a great combination of things: dog friendly, amazing wines and amicable/informative staff. Their Estate Zin and the Black Monukka gets me every time. It may be a bit high octane, but that is a dessert wine I would save room for. Plus, you don't see it every day. I have to say that this was one of my favorite stops in Paso Robles. In fact, my husband loved it so much that he was done after this second stop. I love reds. Tastings were only $5 for 11 tasting and we shared a tasting. First, there is something to be said that this is one of the oldest wineries in the area. The lady behind the counter was really well informed and took the time to talk to us about hte wines and the history of the place. My gosh their Merlot was amazing...and my gosh I am glad I read the yelp reviews before i went and tried the Black Molukka. I am not a dessert wine person but this was delicious. (I am tempted to mix a bit with the Almond Champagne from Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula-yummy!). Seriously, if you like family run, quiet wineries with great wine, I would definitely stop at Rotta. read more

We were pleasantly surprised to stumble across Rotta. The wines were great, and the service better. Sarah was an excellent hostess. 3 stars for the wine, 5 for the history lesson, 3.5 for the woman pouring the day we visited. Only a few of the 11 wines we tasted stood out from the others, which ranged from somewhat drinkable to pleasantly drinkable. The estate Zinfandel was very tasty, so we bought a couple of bottles. So was the estate Cabernet, but we'd already bought some Cabernet earlier, so we skipped it. The Muscat Cannelli was delightful, and we purchased a bottle of that as well. Also interesting was the Black Monukka dessert wine. It reminded us very much of the sweet wines (Malaga Dulce, Pedro Ximenez) that you can find in the southern part of Andalucia in Spain, but not quite as refined. This had more of a bite that you might find in port, so we passed on this too. The woman manning the bar was a little odd. She was very friendly but had obviously memorized a script and was just reciting it over and over again. She couldn't really answer any of the questions I had about the wines, which was unfortunate as I like to learn about what I'm drinking beyond what I can read on a sheet. Also, she started right in on the white wine without asking where we'd like to start. Some people (ourselves included) aren't huge fans of white--why waste a couple ounces on us? I feel bad saying so, because she was really super-nice, but a winery should really have knowledgeable staff pouring, not just someone who's relying on a script. Overall it was a nice experience, but I don't think we'd visit again. read more

I've been wine tasting in both Napa Valley and Temecula and I have to say that Rotta Winery is my favorite (thus far) for wine tasting. For just $5, I sampled an assortment of 13 different wines. I truly appreciated our server, who explained what each wine was and what combinations of food it went well with. The wines were amazing, ranging from very sweet to very rich wines with a bite to them. Our server was with us the whole time, even though it was a busy day, and laughed and joked and made us feel at home. Its a smaller winery, but it's cozy and very homey. I appreciated that she took pictures for us, both inside and outside, and that we were served delicious cheese and crackers (including oyster crackers, mmm) with our wine. Just as a note, my favorite wines were the muscat cannelli and the floral-tasting white zinfandel. I had a truly delightful experience at Rotta Winery as we passed through Paso Robles and will certainly recommend this place to other friends who are visiting Paso, as a good friend of mine recommended Rotta Winery to me. Nice boutique winery with very long history -- one of the first wineries in PR. Their reds are very full bodied and a bit pricey for us ($40+). Tasting fee was $10 but they waive it if you purchase two bottles. We enjoyed their rose and took home a bottle of that ($17). Their dessert wine is very unique (monukka) and I think I'd prefer port. It was overall a nice tasting experience but wasn't one of the favorite wineries we visited. read more

On weekends, they set up multiple tasting bars right in the cellar warehouse, so it never felt crowded. The woman pouring for us was very pleasant and informative. A solid choice to please everyone's tastes: they have whites, reds, and dessert wines available for tasting. The staff is super friendly. You're greeted by vintage jugs of wine (yes, jugs) from when the vineyard was first established. Ponder what exactly makes up a "medium zinfandel" while you enjoy your vino. It's easy to be overwhelmed with all of Rotta's offerings, I stuck with my beloved reds The estate zin was lovely and had a bit more body than I was accustomed to. Our adorable attendant explained that the grapes were dry-farmed, so the fruit yield is smaller but the taste makes up for that. The cab sauvignon was flavorful and our favorite of the all the ones we tasted. My partner-in-crime tried the black monukka dessert wine, it smelled like liquid baklava. It wasn't for us, but the smell was fantastic. This was the most "commercial" of the wineries we visited but there was no shortage of hospitality. Our attendant was happy to fill our glasses, chat about the wines, and offer up recommendations for dinner/drinks after the wineries closed. Came by with my friends during Memorial weekend and had a great time. It was my friends' and my first time wine tasting so as novices we wanted to come to an unpretentious place, which think to Yelp was right on. Our server was named Gin and she was super friendly and was great for conversation. Her patience was greatly appreciated and provided a non intimidating atmosphere for us newbs. When we asked her to take a picture, she even offered us access to behind the bar and asked people out of the way so we would get the perfect picture. Not necessary, but she went above and beyond what we expected. The price can't be beat: $3 for 11 tastings and the bottles were all modestly priced for college students like us. Great value! There is an adorable 3 legged cat named, Morrie and he's super nice. Sat in his bed underneath the counter where we were tasting. The tasting room is furnished with A/C which is AWESOME (perfect for the warmer central coast days). If you're wine tasting, you would be doing yourself a diservice if you didn't stop by this place. It's laid back and unpretentious. The staff are chatty and make the experience enjoyable. Even if you're not a high spender (like us) they give you equal attention and service. I only didn't give them 5 stars because I'm not experienced enough in wine tasting to go around giving those kinds of ratings...not yet at least. :) read more

(Visited mid-October 2008, Harvest Wine Weekend) Rotta was introduced to me one Christmas by a friend that now lives in San Luis Obispo. At the time, I was not much of a fan of dessert wines, but said friend gave me an introduction in the form of Rotta's Zin Port and Black Monukka. Well, I was hooked, and had to stop here on my first trip to Paso. All I can say for both of these wines is mmmmmmmm... Their 04 Giubbini Vineyard Estate Zinfandel was another one of the best wines I had on my trip. They do make other wines I liked, including a muscat canelli, a cab, and several merlots, however the zin and the dessert wines make this place a must on their own. The variety may not be as wide as some other spots, but what they do, they do incredibly well. In addition the staff was great, including our pourer (Gail?) and other employees who would make cameos into the tasting room and add something to whatever she had to say. One even dragged me up a slope (in the background of the pic with the cat I uploaded) to see some of the grapes still on the vine. Loved every minute of it. read more

I wish I could give four and a half stars. This was probably my second favorite winery in Paso. It is the oldest family owned winery in the area and it has a really relaxed feel. They also give you 12 or 13 tastes! Amazing. Several of the wines were really great. I was a fan of the Merlot and the Cab Frac. The dessert wines were the real draw though. There are three on the tasting menu, all pretty incredible, but the Black Monukka was one of the best dessert wines I have ever tasted. It has an amazing nutty, vanilla flavor. I am not surprised it has won a ton of awards. Try this one for sure! read more

I'm not sure that I can properly express how much I loved Rotta! First, they waived our tasting fee because we were with the Wine Line. Second, their tasting list includes THIRTEEN wines. Third, the staff there is amazing. Gale who poured for us was the friendliest person we encountered the entire day. She was very knowledgeable about all of the wines, unlike some of the other wineries that we went to where the staff would simply read off the list, Gale enhance our trip by explaining to us about the making of the wine and how to get the best flavor out of it. We also got to meet Marco the wine maker who again was very friendly and made our experience very educational. If you are going to Paso for wine tasting, this is a MUST-GO, don't miss out! read more

It is one of the oldest wineries in the area, and it is on a sunny, warm hill. The woman who works there is chatty and informative and slightly kooky in a good way. This winery was the last of our stops for our wine tour with the Grapeline. The location was great. They were setting up for a wedding (which we learned is for members of the owners' families only), those lucky ducks. The tasting room is in the large winery, with vats surrounding a small little tasting bar. I liked it. The wine was ok. The ports were SUPER sweet, so if you like that kind of stuff, you'll love these. Way too sweet for my taste though. The server/taster was kind, giving us some neat historical facts. We found this place on the Paso Wine Pamphlet and I'm so glad we did! It was our last stop on our Friday tasting and it was a great way to finish off the day. I was drawn to the place because of their dessert wines and they really have some great ones. Our favorite was the Black Monukka followed by the Muscat Canneli. They are both sweet, but not over the top and the monukka has got some great flavors in there. Unassuming winery until you walk in the door and are greeted by Gail at the counter. She is awesome!! This was our first wine stop and believe it or not we stood the tasting counter chit chatting with her for an hour and a half! She has the best personality and makes you feel like an old friend. She knows her stuff when it comes to wine. When she heard it was our honeymoon, she came out and gave us both hugs, very sweet. The vast selection of wines made it hard to decide which one we liked best, but believe it or not the Merlot was the winner. We are nto normally Merlot drinkers, but this one tasted pretty darn good. I envisioned enjoying a glass of it with a nice Grilled Steak and potato. Don't forget to check out the three-legged cat lying around on the outside pation area, he is a sweetie. The wines were all incredible (and it being our 1st stop means you can trust my judgement) and at very reasonable prices. We went to five other wineries after Rotta and none of them lived up to Gayle and the amazingness here. Highlights? The Trinity is amazing and so are all of the dessert wines. This was our last stop in Paso Robles, just because we heard the dessert wine was a must try. On our arrival, we saw a few drunks stumbling out and thought, 'oh, this might be good'. Well, after trying ALL the wines on their list that day (10 tastings for $3!)... I really only enjoyed the Rose and Muscato. The ladies in the tasting room are very friendly & knowledgeable (we did get to meet the famous/hilarious Gale as we were leaving), & you can see into the wine-making facilities from the tasting room. For $3, we tasted 10 wines (including 3 dessert wines). While the non-dessert wines were reasonably tasty, I wasn't particularly wowed by most of them. However, they had a delicious off-dry muscat for $12/bottle (750s, not 375s!), so we went home with some of that, as well as a bottle of their madera-style sherry ("Black Monukka"). The zin port was pretty good too, but probably not really worth $25. I'd say the dessert wines push it to 3.5 stars for me, but not quite 4. read more

My friend and I visited around 7 wineries on our Paso wine route. We ended at Rotta winery. This was by far my favorite of the day. There were 13 wines mostly red (which suits me because I'm a HUGE fan of red), however I ended up walking out with a bottle of rose :) Anyway, I liked most of the wine on the list that we tried. This place is by far my favorite winery in the region. This is the only winery i am a member of the wine club because ALL of their wine is excellent! Plus they are VERY reasonably priced for the region. In my last visit I asked the tasting room attendant if they had tours of the winery and she quickly got on the phone and asked the owner/winemaker if he would come by to give me and my guest a personal tour! Plus the tasting room attendant had a great sense of humor and it she made us feel how appreciative they were of us coming it. They clearly understand the concept of customer service. UPDATE: We used Rotta to supply the majority of wine for our wedding and the staff was so incredibly helpful that compared to other venders, it was down right pleasant! They let me apply my wine club discount and gave me a little bump to help with the price! Plus the Cab was the favorite of our guests. This experience just re-iterated the fact of how awesome Rotta is and even though I have moved to texas and became a poor grad student, I still get about a case of wine shipped to me ever year. My father enjoyed drinking Rotta wines for many years. I remember him purchasing the Old Zinfandel for $2.50 a gallon. He introduced them to me over 50 years ago. I always enjoyed the family atmosphere. Last Saturday I made an appointment for 1:00 p.m. for a tasting. When I arrived I found a handwritten note on the door that stated the tasting room was closed for lunch until 2:00 p.m. I had taken a friend for the tasting and we were both extremely disappointed the staff was not there for our appointment. Why was I given the appointment time if there was not going to be staff to serve us? I do not intend to ever taste or drink Rotta wine again. This situation is an example of what happens to locally owned family wineries when they are bought by large companies. With over 400 wineries to choose from in San Luis Obispo County, there are a lot of other wineries to choose from that treat their customers with greater respect courtesy. read more
