This is a great store. They do have a huge selection and the prices are really good. I often find many things cheaper then Best Buy and CompUSA. The staff is always surrounded by customers, so good luck getting help. The coolest thing is FREE computer advice. That's right FREE! There's a room by customer service where they will take as much time discussing your computer. They just won't look at it. That costs money. I have had them diagnose things for free, that PC King down the street couldn't figure out. Negative point is that they want your personal info when you buy something. read more

Lots of stuff here (see other reviews for details); most useful for me is the wide selection of books. If you're not sure what you need or are looking for something obscure, this is your best bet (for bricks and mortar, anyway). Though the last time I was there a lot was on clearance and it looked like they might be cutting back. A pity if this is so. Update 2006 Oct. 30: They *have* cut back the books section by about half to make room for a gaming department. The shelves are not too well organized, but you can probably find what you want if it's there. Still your best bet if you need to browse before you buy. Fry's may be catching up. read more

Went here to get my work computer fixed. I thought the place had a great selection. If I was coming there just to get a part or hardware I think I would of liked it. I came to see if they could replace my screen on my Lenovo and they quoted me at $600. That is half the cost of my actual computer. Microcenter is great if you neeed to buy an electronic or somthing for your PC or laptop. But under no circumstances let them touch or open up your laptops or coomputer!! Never have them build you a PC unless you want Huge problems in the future!! A year ago I had them build me a gaming PC a one week build turned into a 4 week nightmare! The employee who built the PC had no idea what they were doing I was promised it to be built in 1 week. That turned into 4 week!! The build was put together horribly switches were buried by hardware wires pinched. When I would call for updates or what is going on I would get voicemails phone calls that never were returned. Them on pick up day week 4 my PC builder was not there! They could not find paperwork! They did not know what he did in regards to my build!! I I demanded a refund I was not going to put up with this any longer a manager showed up begged me to let her still build me a PC I told her just give me a refund and I will never be back here ever again. I had to actually block their number because the person who built my PC would call me three times a day asking why I returned the PC build it got almost to be Stalker status.. but im not very smart because... Fast forward a year later against my better judgment I purchased ram for my brand new $3k laptop and I wanted them to install it because it involves taking the motherboard out, I was assured that this would be a no problem easy job and I explain to them all the issues I have a year prior and I'm giving them another chance. The simple ram price of $20 ballooned into $130 and was told it would be ready in 24 hours someone will call me. No one called me I called Microcenter and they told me oh yes your laptop is ready for pick up and that it works perfect. Upon pick up again no one had paperwork on my laptop. The man at the counter spent 10 min minutes looking for my laptop he had no paperwork when he returned just my laptop and said thank you have a great day. As soon as I got it I opened it up it seem to turn on when I got home I opened it up again to just take a look at it and realized I had no sound. I was Livid I called the manager the manager told me bring it back I'm sorry for the inconvenience we will fix this it should not be a problem. I went back and they could not figure out why it's no longer at sound they diagnosed that the speakers were now broken and did not work and that they would order new speakers for my $3000 laptop and call me when the parts are in. Nothing was done in regards to make the situation better I now have a broken laptop that I cannot even return it to Best Buy where I purchased it from because they opened it up and broke the factory seal I will never in my life go back to this place they do not know what they are doing. Everyone seems to just wander around. The only reason why I gave this two stars because they do have lots of equipment for fairly decent prices but the customer service sucks and their workmanship is horrible. This place is Hobby Lobby for the geek/nerd/enthusiast set. It has lots of merchandise, and quite a selection. If you are a do it yourself type of person then this place rocks. The sales people are helpful, although, there have been a few questions I asked which went unanswered. I do my own computer repairs, both on my Macs and my PCs, so I don't have any experience with their service department. They have a section for hobbyists which includes several kit systems like Raspberry Pi, and others. I found electronics equipment like soldering irons, and components, so when and if I need these I know where to go. Their prices are reasonable, but usually can't match online sales, but sometimes you need a hard drive and you need it NOW. read more

Happened out here on an impulse buy, Micro center in Chicago didn't have this item it was only available out here or on-line. Being that it was a few days to NYEve I had to have it! You know how that is. It was a special edition Sony camera with built in gigabytes of space and a touch screen. What sucked was that the one they had on display had not been charged and the charging station was not working. This little cute camera was expensive and I was ready to purchase if I could see its operating system. The salesman ran to the counter and opened a box for me, obviously they won't do that unless they really know you might purchase. Got it together and working and showed me what features he was aware of. Because he went out of his way; is one reason contributing to why I bought it. Micro center customer service is hit or miss, that's what I'm used to with the Chicago location. I'm glad that out here a salesman got with me right away and I was able to get back on the road returning to the city before rush hour began. To a person unfamiliar with the area, you could drive passed this location and not know it. It's inside of a busy shopping area. The parking lot is shared with the businesses next door so there are always people coming and going. Caution is needed; I saw a few people not paying attention and there were subsequent honks and near scrapes. read more

Wow! An electronic place where they know their stuff AND help you! No, it's not a dream, a place that has that really exists. I went here with my geeky kids. Think Sheldon and Leonard from the Big Bang Theory without the girls. Anyway, this is their happy place. I tagged along to see why they were driving all the way to Westmont. Now I know. We walked in and there were lots of people to help us. The guys told them what they wanted and the staff member walked us over to the area where the items were and then gave us a recommendation! I can't say enough about the customer service here. The selection can be a bit overwhelming so it's great that there are knowledgeable folks to help you out. Good selection of PC parts, laptops, games/software, misc. accessories and even Apple computers. I wish I would have read some of these reviews pertaining to the repair department before I went in Stupid Me! It's been 2 weeks since I've dropped off my Son's Lenovo gaming laptop for a simple keyboard malfunction/replacement which I was charged $40 upfront to diagnose even though the purpose of the visit was to replace the keyboard but fine I understand that's protocol and everyone pays for diag time even if they know the issue, so they promise a 2 day response time with the diagnosis cool no problem. 4 days later not 2 I get a text saying it's the keyboard it needs replacing, of course this did not come as a surprise, in the same text I'm told they contacted Lenovo and are waiting to hear back about warranty or the price of the new board and will get back to me which was 9 days ago on the 23rd and still no response! This is such a horrible display of customer service I would have been better off going to BestBuy geek squad or doing it myself as a quick google search shows me the part the price and an installation video but the experts at MicroCenter whom I paid to diagnose an issue which was already diagnosed can't get a price or timeframe for what appears to be a common issue with this model Lenovo. I DO NOT recommend bringing your electronics to get repaired at MicroCenter but I will say I have always had a pleasant shopping experience, Very Unfortunate! read more

So I went in Saturday a purchased a 27" IMAC open box. I guess I should have known better when a deal seems too good to be true. Within 24 hours the thing is now a brick. Strange because they claimed everything was working fine. Won't even allow me to reload the operating system. My guess is that this thing was a problem all along so they just passed it along. Back to why we stopped doing business with Micro Center in the first place. Went to Micro Center today to buy 2 laptops of which the store had more than 10 in stock. We were told you can only buy 1. We had also wanted two SSD type drives and again they told us we could only have 1. A quick check of their web site indicated that the limit was 3 per house-hold. The manager was completely unwilling to work with us. We are a local medium sized business that occasionally will need more than quantity 1 of something. We were not trying to buy all of their stock, simply quantity 2 of something that they had more than 10 of in stock. By the way they did say they will sell us the second unit at full price.. Really Micro Center.. ??? Back to B&H Photo.. we can wait a few days for delivery.. In the end this is your stores loss because we spend a lot of $$$ money on technology.. ) read more

I purchased a computer about seven years ago..my chord went bad..I tried to look on line..no luck. I wrote a letter to Micro Center..gave them all the vitals..then they emailed back..bring computer and chord to the store..one hour and 57 min drive..and the sales staff tries to sell me a multi plug..which is not what I wanted..could have got that at radio shack..Then he tells me..Oh we don't handle that brand anymore...funny..back when I bought it they raved about it.. This place has a smaller selection that Fry's, but it is focused on computer parts. Their prices are close to or better than Fry's, and they will price match if it is the same item. I prefer the salespeople in the Westmont store to those in Chicago. I find they are more attentive and professional. Their technical advice is generally very good. If you need a complicated question answered then you should talk to the technical expert who has an office next to the customer service counter. They also have their own generic brand of computer called the "Powerspec" You can get good deals on these computers, or get a refurbished computers if you want to go very cheep. read more

If you have an Apple product I highly recommend going to the actual Apple store instead of Micro Center. I brought in my 2014 MacBook Pro because it needed a new battery. I was told that they had to order it and it would cost $430 plus $150 for labor. They also told me that if I went to the Apple store they would probably charge me even more. I actually went to the Apple store in Oakbrook a few days later and was told that a new battery would be $199 plus tax and no charge for labor. That's obviously a huge difference. The employee who helped me at Apple said that she had a customer come in the previous day who also went to Micro Center first and was quoted some outrageous price for a repair. Even though Micro Center is an Apple authorized service provider, I will never take an Apple product there again. read more

If there was a "zero" star option thats what this business deserves. I took my MacBook laptop in for diagnosis/replace of my screen for lines of picture dropping out. It was a suggested and "authorized" Apple service center. My AppleCare protection plan was still valid. They took my computer into the back for 10-15 minutes and returned stating that the screen was "cracked on the inside" and was not covered under AppleCare and that a new screen would be the cost of a new computer (~$3,500). When asked how the "guys in the back" were able to diagnose an "interior crack," he mumbled something about special equipment with "crystals" and ultimately could not provide a real answer. I left and took the computer to an actual Apple Store who immediately placed an order for a new screen with no question whatsoever that AppleCare would cover the costs. Either this business is knowingly running a true scam center or has no clue what they are doing. Either way AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! read more

I went there on a Sunday afternoon. I was anxious that my laptop couldn't start up... The place is clean and pleasant. The tech support team was very tentative and knowledgeable. It turned out that my ac adapter broke down... They recommended an ac adapter, tested it out and sent me on my way. I later found out that the price of the specific ac adapter at Micro Center is 20% cheaper than Amazon.com. Very happy with my purchase and the service. read more

I usually love this store because they have all the niche items that you won't find in most electronics retail, stuff only available online. It makes the hour drive there worth it. Today I went in and decided to buy everything I needed for a new computer there. I spent around $2200. For micro center that may not be a lot of money, but for me it is. I definitely did not get $2200 worth of service today. I had hunt down an associate to point me in the direction of thermal paste, he simply said "that's in the build your own pc section" and pointed to the other side of the store... really? You couldn't take the extra minute to walk me over to it? I had no idea where in that particular section the thermal paste would be. So I had to spend more time trying to find another associate to find it. The board I bought was DOA. I had to drive back. That's 4 hours in the car today. To spend my money that I could have just as easily given to the frys electronics down the road. Every employee acted as if I was a bother, I know they work on commission, I have no idea why they wouldn't want to help me. All in all this left a bad taste in my mouth and I'll be taking my future business to fry's. Sure I may pay a little bit more, but at frys and even bestbuy , stores that are 10x the size, I always have a warm and personable experience. Used to love this place until trying recently to return a defective pair of headphones. I had spent $ 172 and change on two pairs of these headphones for both my husband and me. They were treated with kid gloves and mine had been used a total of only 3 times. Noone else used them and I never even had the chance to use them while travelling. I went to use them recently and the earpiece came off the headpiece and was just dangling. Micro Center refused to take them back because I had had them over 30 days. Are you kidding me? We used to go to Micro Center all the time, but we've stopped recently because the quality/prices have plummeted. The book area is all but gone (much to my husband's dismay) and they've cut back on everything else to make room for their gaming area. Online stores like Newegg, the new Fry's store...all have now outpriced and outdistanced Micro Center. Bought a laptop there in Sept 2013. No problem. Bought another there in Dec 2014. Take it on a trip only to find out it can't play a DVD (and I'm on the road with no internet access). Really. Can't play a simple DVD? You think they would tell you that the manufacturer is looking to cut corners so there is no proper media player. Installed. Heads up! What else is this box missing? I purchased a "return" DVP player at 4pm. the returned item tag on the box, one of many, stated the set was complete. it was not missing was the second rgb set of cables, the warranty packet, and the manuals after an hour if attempting to figure out why the box worked but didn't respond to input commands I finally realised the remote was dead. when I went to return the unit the clerk lied straight faced that all returns are sent back to Sony and checked then returned to the store despite the label stating in store return. the took my money before u even signed for the credit slip but it will be 3 days before I get the refund back on the hard. something not right about not having the refund OR the unit.
