I've spent quite a bit of time in Micro Center these past few days and I actually really enjoy being there. Looking at the negative reviews, I can understand their perspective. Some of the workers there aren't helpful at all and you'd be wasting your breath communicating with those guys. However, I actually spent time talking with some of the workers there and I find that there are some very competent individuals at the store. I spend most of my time in the Build-Your-Own-PC section and the associates who helped me ranged from knowledgeable to obsessive with computers. Just judge the book by the cover on this one - if they look geeky, they probably are. I find the geeky looking ones are the friendliest and most helpful. Aside from the pc department, I spent some time in the gaming department as well. The guys in the there are somewhat knowledgeable about the games and can make good recommendations on the products available. If you're walking around in the center, I find the workers may not always be knowledgeable about the specific product you're asking about, but some will put forth the effort to be helpful. Finally, the pricing. I find some of their products are actually cheaper than what I'd find online. However, if their price is more expensive, just know that they will price match with newegg.com. read more

Makes Best Buy look like Walmart. I have gone in for things as small as an audio adapter, and as large as a computer array for my office. Each time I have been greeted with the same exceptional service from their staff. Their selection is excellent, carrying all the major brands, including Dell, Apple, Sony, Lenovo, and HP. They also make available everything you need to customize or build your own computer, which I did with their assistance this past year. Prices are competitive with Amazon and other online retailers with the benefits of being able ask questions and walk out the door with the parts the same day. One other benefit that I wouldn't have thought to include had I not experienced its benefits first-hand is the amount of bilingual staff. I have never had any issues communicating with them in English. However, I had a coworker who wanted to send a laptop to his sister in El Salvador, and whose English was less than fluent. A Spanish speaking salesman was able to explain all the benefits of the computers we looked at to my coworker in his native language. I have purchased dozens of computers for work, with friends & family, and for myself. I have also purchased a couple TVs, and a myriad of components for speaker systems, upgrades, etc. I have yet to have a bad experience, and plan to continue referring friends and family there for their technology needs. read more

I checked in my laptop on September 8 for battery, internal fan, and monitor hinge replacement. The service representative, Ben, was kind and patient and helpfully got me checked in. I was sent to triage where I was assigned a technician named Thor Jensen. He said he would run diagnostics on the machine that would take 45 minutes. I perused the store in this time. He said he would not be able to complete the repairs immediately, but that he would keep me posted on the status and if the parts were in he could do it that day. I left expecting some communication later that day. I happened to notice that as soon as I got back to my car, Thor went for a walk around the corner. I received a call three days later (Monday, September 11) informing me that the manufacturers limited warranty did not cover accidental damage (the monitor hinge, from wear-and-tear). I informed them that I had paid for accidental damage coverage and sent the policy information over email. Because of the lack of communication and failure to ask questions about my warranty up-front or at least later the same day, my ticker already was delayed by 3 additional days. Parts were ordered with Lenovo (manufacturer). A week later (September 18) the parts were not in. I didn't receive calls telling me this, in fact in those seven days I didn't receive any communication about status. I had to call even though I was promised the Monday before that I would be kept up to date by, you guessed it, Thor Jensen. Never heard from the guy. I told the service rep that the wait time was beginning to be difficult and the lack of communication was unacceptable. More empty promises of better communication were made and beating around the bush about the hurricane disrupting deliveries and such. Another week goes by, no communication. We're now at September 25. I call again and am informed that the parts tracking system was recently converted to an updated system and that the parts were there, but were not being tracked correctly. I bring the laptop in and have it worked on. When I return later I'm informed that two of the three parts were installed, but unfortunately the battery was never received. The team tells me they get an expedited order processed, but I let them know I will be out of town for vacation in 3 days and will be gone for a week and need my computer with me. Radio silence until I'm about halfway through my vacation week (giving benefit of the doubt for the exact day, I'll say it was October 1). Being out of the area I was unable to get back and have the work done immediately. The day after I get back I head right over and have the work done. The highlights of the experience were that the techs that actually performed the work seemed to do good work (Hamza I would give 5 stars and Carlos I would give 4). The only complaint with the final work is that one of the small screws on the casing of the laptop seems to have been confused with a spare on Carlos's desk and so it doesn't really fit all the way. Minor detail. My big complaint with all this is that it took almost a month to get the parts in to complete my repair order. It took over a month to actually get it done, but a few days of that is on me for being on a planed vacation when the final part did finally arrive. I emailed the manager of the team here and never heard back, so again, just awful communication from the top down. But, I do have to say that when I sent the manager an email about my dissatisfaction I got the ticket transferred from the incompetent hands of Thor Jensen to the very able services of Hamza. I will do everything I can to avoid this service center in the future. read more

Can you say apathetic and disdainful? this describes the staff at this store and the service manager "Jeff". If he has any word in his vocabulary but "sorry" for sitting around and not managing the service his employees don't even provide, I never heard it. Efficiency, non-existent, competence - not obvious from any contact with any staff. Retail: With the demise of CompUSA, this is the only major retailer left if you're looking for parts to build/replace in a PC. Prices are competitive, and you'll find items that otherwise you can only find online. The folks here work on commission, but I've not had a problem with overly pushy salespeople. It's not like HHGregg, where you'll get 5 people following you around asking if you need help; I usually have to flag down a salesperson myself because they're so busy. The store in Rockville is definitely less junky and overall nicer, but the products and prices are the same. Repair: Kind of a mixed bag. I took my all-in-one PC in to diagnose a screen problem. They were able to get back to me within 2 days, and would have ordered the part for me at a reasonable price had I chosen to go that route. The $70 diagnostic fee was fair, since I would have had to pay Sony $90, plus the hassle of shipping it off. Out of the three times I tried to call the service department (on different days), twice the phone went to voicemail. On the plus side, the technician responded to an email question I sent him within 5 minutes. Once I got my computer home, I discovered my CD drive no longer works; I suspect they didn't mount it right when they put the computer back together. I could take it back, but since I never use the CD drive, it's not worth the trouble. read more

Take BestBuy...and make it not so crappy and expensive....TA DAAAA you get Mirco Center. Anything related to computers this is the place. If you need any HDD then go here. I have never seen better deals, in person, on 500gb's then this place. Not to mention they sell 2gb flash and SD for like $15. The RAM prices are a tab high, but they don't sell crap RAM. I picked up an HDD enclosure for like $20 here...amazing deal. My brother also picked up a Sony tv for here for like $300 cheap then BestBuy or those goons at Circuit City. So if you need anything related to computers or TV's ...then microcenter is DAAAA PLACE. read more

If there was a "Zero Stars" option, they would get it. DO NOT EVER take a computer to Micro Center for repairs (or anything else). They are the WORST. They screwed up my computer and won't do anything about it. In mid-late October, I foolishly hired the Micro Center in Fairfax to replace the hard drive in my desktop computer. Ever since I got the machine back, the sound has not worked. Nothing. No system sounds, no iTunes, no YouTube. I was able to get sputtering, intermittent sound once, when I wiggled the mouse that I had plugged in at the back of the machine. (So it's not a driver issue). I have a feeling that they damaged or loosened the sound card. My computer speakers work fine on my tablet. Other speakers do not work on my desktop either. I unplugged everything and plugged everything back in, making sure everything was hooked up right. Still nothing. Micro Center is SUPPOSED to guarantee their work for 90 days (which is tomorrow). I have been working extremely long hours at work since October, and have barely had time to USE my computer at home, let alone try to figure this out. And I was very hesitant to take the computer back to Micro Center because it was a such an unpleasant experience in October, that I vowed never to set foot in the place again. So I wanted to see if I could figure it out myself. Unfortunately, it is beyond my skill level. I am very computer literate, but I am not a technician. This evening I finally had time to call Micro Center. I actually (amazingly!) did get someone on the phone, but they unfortunately lived down to my expectations. He gave me a runaround, so I asked to speak to a manger. The manager was a total jerk, who insinuated that I had done something to the computer, and was trying to blame them. He said I would have to pay $70 just to get them to look at it -- even though THEY did something to it when they replaced my hard drive. So I will be taking the machine to Best Buy -- even if I have to pay them -- rather than give Micro Center another dime. Don't EVER go to Micro Center. For ANYTHING. They don't care about their customers, and they don't stand behind the work they do. They will screw you over if they can. I wouldn't even buy anything there, because if there is anything wrong with what you buy, you'll have to deal with their service department. THE WORST. Go to Best Buy or a Mom n' Pop place. read more

Sometimes I have okay experiences here, and sometimes I have horrible experiences here. It's nice for a nork like me to have a place to pick up a CPU power supply, some random computer accessories, etc; but in general, the service here stinks. Can't blame a store for its clientele. Back in the day (like 10 years ago) this Micro Center was the bomb. Anything you needed to build, upgrade, fix or overclock, could be found here. These days, they may still have all those impressive parts, but the store is so outdated and unorganized that you'd be hard pressed to find it. Even ordering online in advance is a guessing game as to if they'll be able to find your parts and have them ready before you get there. Their staff is a big surly ( I would be too) and the few I've encountered lately, haven't been as well informed as I'd expect from someone that worked there. one of my favourite places to go for random computer crap. The majority of the staff is very helpful, just hard to find sometimes since its a large store with many customers. Some of the best prices on peripherals and random toys like my brand new radio control boat, but i don't know that I'd buy a computer from here. The computer and television prices are pretty similar to other retailers, and their warranty is probably similar, but if you're traveling a big name chain like bestbuy is easier to find. read more

5 stars for the Great selection (I tell my wife it's the DSW of electronics). 3 for the customer support counter -- please stop making me think I'm in a Best Buy. I'm now buying all my electronics there. Hard drives, monitors, cables, all from there. The sales staff actually can tell you something beside "I think it's either near the dryers or the cameras". I keep forgetting to check in because I start going through the sales bins. Also been there for a graphics card. However, when I asked the guy where it was, he showed me another one, that was just a bit better, and $25 cheaper -- gotta love it. However, I took a laptop back -- they did a great job in replacing the hard drive & doing diagnostics, but when I went to pick it up, I had to wait 30 minutes in line, that is when I remembered to "check in". Very fair price, very quick turn around, and didn't push for an extended warranty/24 hr support/add-ons. However, when I got there, there were 5 in line, when I left 8-10 & no one came over to help the 1 guy at the desk... Bottom line: I'll be back, but maybe the next time, I'll think twice about dropping something off for repair... read more

I'm a little surprised the reviews are not generally higher. This place is great because it has a big selection of all those obscure electronics you don't see anywhere else, and the prices are surprisingly cheap... occasionally even better than the big online retailers like newegg. These days, you either have to choose between "great selection and prices (but it's internet only so you gotta wait several says)" or "expensive and doesn't have much of a selection, (but it's a brick and mortar store nearby, so you can get it right now)". Micro Center lets me get that obscure computer part *right now*, and I know I won't be overpaying for that convenience. I can't speak about their tech support department except they seemed competent. Usually one of their floor reps can answer techy questions. When I gave one of them a tricky question, he didn't try to give me a BS guess, he referred me to the tech department and they were able to give me a knowledgeable answer. My only reason for not giving a higher rating is, one time they were busy and said they'd send someone to me, but forgot all about me apparently. The guy who then tried to help me instead didn't seem super informed about the options. Been here many times and will keep coming back! read more

I returned a printer to Michael at the returns desk (skinny dude with long hair) and he gave me a gift card with store store credit. To make a long story short, I lost the card somewhere in the store as I was shopping and I didn't realize it until I was in the checkout line. The cashier told me to talk to the manager, the manager told me that there was probably nothing they could do for me but took me back to Michael and Michael told the manager that he could fix my problem. It would have been SO easy for him to smile and say "sorry, there's nothing I can do" but he said he could help me so the manager told me to get in the customer service line and see him when I got to the front of the line. Michael found the original transaction, voided the old card, gave me a new one and checked out my purchases. I saw another yelp calling him out by name for being rude to customers waiting in line and I don't know what might have made him behave that way but if I had to choose between competent and efficient on the returns line (where they have to deal with all sorts of unique problems) or someone who will smile at me and tell me there is nothing they can do for me, I'd rather deal with the guy that can get something done... wouldn't you? And just for the record, he was very polite and cordial when I was there and things were very hectic with after Christmas returns. read more

Great place when you are looking for hard to find computer equipment, cables and peripherals. I wouldn't recommend buying a computer from Microcenter. Lots of things to look at, but sales people are on commission and will really work to sell you things you just don't need. Plus, if you buy a computer and then, for whatever reason decide to bring it back, there is a 15% restocking fee. Why would someone need to pay that if the system is just being returned? It isn't like that elsewhere. Salespeople, in terms of finding knick-knacks are helpful. Many know what they are talking about and are better than other big box stores where they lack the knowledge of the products they are selling. They also have something where you can order and pay for the products on their website and drive to the store and its ready to be picked up. Its nice and easy! But I don't buy many large items from there. I do a lot of research and then price shop at home usually online. I certainly recommend going there for hard to find cables, etc..., but would never, ever consider a large purchase from there. Just too many upsells that I'm not looking for. read more

I like this place a lot and like it better for its customer service than the Rockville branch. I just bought a new Windows 8 tablet and was able to get good solid advice from the staff after he asked me a couple of questions that basically determined I was looking for a miniature PC and not just an iPad clone. Another time I needed a specific adaptor to connect a laptop's DisplayPort to an HDMI port. These kinds of things can drive you crazy trying to find but a staffer led me to it within 30 seconds. I noticed classes at the center while I was there but it seemed to be filled with all men. Marketing must be a bit off. Prices are comparable to the online stores. Kudos to the interesting doodads at the register area to look at while waiting. read more

I had a damaged fan in a 2018 MacBook Pro, that needed repair in October '20. After making a reservation, the Apple Store informed me that it would take at least 2 weeks for me to be able to get the laptop in store, for repair. I took it to MicroCenter's repair services instead, and they repaired & returned the damage in 5 days. The intake & customer service process was a little frustrating, but the end result was great. I don't think MicroCenter is typically thought of as a place to repair Apple products, but their Apple technicians did a great job. read more

Micro Center is a paradise for computer and technology geeks. If you need to quickly get an accessory for your PC or Apple product, this is the place to go. They have most anything you need - from external memory to replacement laptop chargers to extra RAM to ... well, you get the point. And it's a great place to buy your hardware ... I've bought both a desktop and laptop here, and have been happy with the purchase (and price) of both. The sales rep was especially helpful when purchasing our laptop - when discovering that my wife is a teacher, he helped us get set up with a heavily discounted version of MS Office for educators. They also have a small department for video games, and sell HDTVs as well. Occasionally they have long lines - it was crowded this Saturday - but the cashiers are fast and efficient. Prices are excellent. You may be able to find things cheaper online, sure, but if you are looking for the immediate service and support that a brick and mortar store offers, there's no better place than Micro Center for computer accessories. read more

This review is for service. They do a great job. I don't know what other places charge to have a thorough cleaning from viruses/malware, but I paid $350 to have the computer diagnosed, wiped and reloaded plus they installed virus protection as well. Oh, and I also got a hard drive that they used to back up my data. It's not cheap, but probably the going rate. Anyway, I think we will always bring our laptops here for servicing! read more

I am extremely disappointed in this store in Fairfax. First, I bought a brand new Lenovo this year after having bought my first one at another store, which gave me trouble free service for about 5 years. The Lenovo from Microsoft gave me trouble in the first month, with battery draining out in 90 minutes. I returned this and bought a solid state HP new, and the screen cracked within the first 90 days, it was taken back to Microcenter for repair on Oct 11 and I have no news about it. NO one answers when you call their number and their extended hours don't mean a thing. Never again from them, shoddy service. read more

As an update to my experience at Microcenter, we returned to redeem the store credit and bought an Apple Certified Refurbished MacBook Pro. The Manager came out, and asked to hear about our previously poor experience. He made amends with a $50 credit towards our purchase, and was apologetic. All-in-all, generally happier with MC. TIP to anyone calling the service department on an existing ticket: DON'T call the main line to ask for the service department. DO call the number listed at the top of your service ticket and ask to speak to the TECH that was assigned your ticket. read more

After I left my original review of 1 star, I was contacted by Micro Center corporate. They asked about my experience and i described my back and forth attempts in getting a budget laptop. They got the northern Virginia Micro Center in contact with me and a manager offered me $100 off any laptop I chose as long as it was new. While I was grateful for the discount for my troubles, I also would never recommend going for an open box or refurbished laptop from Micro Center. Their offer of $100 a new laptop shows that they do not have confidence in their refurbished or open box items. They attempted to address my issue and allowed me to pick up a good budget laptop but there are still issues with how much effort it took me to get the product I wanted. read more

I used to work for Microcenter in Chicago a decade ago for about 6 months. Loved them and still respect them. they are indeed knowledgeable. i used to buy my electronics only from them i then moved to virginia and last three times i tried to buy something it has been traumatic. i like to speak on phone, order there and tehn go to the center to pick up my stuff. but the phone system sucks - i can almost never get any human for more than 30 mins. and if i do get they cannot seem to transfer me to anyone on sales floor. after leaving multiple messages for couple of days they dont call back. it seems they are determined to lose a customer. read more

I purchased an iPad and two covers during the pandemic during on at the one hour they have accommodations for those in high-risk groups. I selected 3 items online and they were ready for me the next day. When I opened the covers for the iPad I purchased, both were used. One was broken and the other was dirty with food or make up streaks on the soft material of the cover. I immediately texted the number with photos of the problems. I also tried to call Microcenter numerous times to report my disgust and frustration. I would never have purchased a used item in a pandemic. Getting no responses, I contacted my credit card company to initiate a dispute. (Going back during the high-risk hour would require taking leave from my work-at-home job, and I did not think additional handling of these items advisable.) Although I initiated the dispute in credit card process immediately, I never heard back until finally I learned that Microcenter didn't respond until AFTER their 30-day return period was over and they then asserted my dispute was not allowable per their policy. So Microcenter runs out the clock instead of actually dealing with the issue? Poor form and customer service. So I am stuck with 2 useless iPad covers, but they have lost a customer who has spent thousands of dollars in the past. Nunca mas. Shame on this retailer for 1) selling multiple, broken, used (dirty) iPad covers and 2) Not responding to my credit card company in a timely or honest fashion. read more

Cheaper than Bestbuy price and better offers. This is the only location around this area. It is a bit smaller than Bestbuy size and doesn't have a lot of house appliances like Bestbuy does. However, their stuffs are a lot cheaper than Bestbuy. Their sales representatives are nice and helpful. I'm not very tech savvy so I always need their help to find things I need there. They have great offers from time to time so keep an eye on their website and their flyers that they send to your house if you sign up. You can order online if you know what you need specifically. It is faster this way because you can just pick up and pay at a separate location. The registers may be busy and taking longer. read more

I brought my Mac Book here because it was the only place that is an Apple certified repair place during COVID. My screen went dark and they said it would take 1-2 weeks to repair the screen. About a week after the drop off, they called me to tell me they have to send it out to Apple and the "find my" application has to be turned off. The tech instructed me on how to go into my IPhone to disconnect my "find my" feature which apparently has to be done prior to sending it out. I followed his instructions and proceeded to COMPLETELY WIPE OUT my entire hard drive on my old computer which I was using while I was having my new computer repaired. I panicked because this is a 9 year old computer with all my old work files and thousands of photos from all 3 of my children! When I told the tech this, he suggested I backup the new computer he was working on since this had many of my old documents transferred onto it when I purchased it. He suggested I come in to make sure the photos and docs were transferred. When I arrived, It took over one hour to have the tech review what documents were on a separate hard drive without allowing me to see what was on the computer. How can I know if it has all been transferred if I can't view what is on the computer? He did not have an answer to this and I was charged $150 for my docs and photos to be transferred to the external hard drive. I asked to speak to a manager to have that fee waived as it was their fault that my entire hard drive from my old computer was wiped out as a result of their guidance to do so. They offered to give me $25 off the cost. The conclusion was that I should wait until COVID is over and take it to the Apple store so that I could ensure that all my data has been adequately copied. So, basically they had my computer for nearly 2 weeks, had me erase all my children's childhood photos and work documents, charged me $125, did not repair my computer and gave me back my computer in the same way I dropped it off. I was so upset. Photos are irreplaceable! The only reason I gave them 2 stars is because the salesperson was kind and apologetic but I will never come back here again. read more

I spent the better part of thirty minutes looking for a NAS, after dropping $400 on NAS drives here the other day. They had the exact drive less bay that I was looking for, I was actually quite happy to pay $225 versus the $169 online price I found for the same drive, and having to pay sales tax as well....so I took my prize to the front of the store to pay and go home. AT LEAST FORTY PEOPLE IN LINE. For a lot of stores, this isn't a problem, but I have enough experience here to know how ABYSMALLY SLOW their checkout process is. They take so long to cycle people through their registers that there was no way I was about to invest that kind of time to standing in THEIR line. I put down my several hundred dollars purchase and left. I'll buy it online, cheaper, with no sales tax, and just have to wait an extra day for it to get her. I'm happier for it. read more

Also seems the employees are more than a little pushy at times at whether or not you need assistance. I was looking at computers in the back and two employees swarmed me asking if I needed help. I politely answered that I didn't, and they came back in a few minutes and pestered me, and starting to tell me about how their PC's with Windows 8 are so awesome... I promptly responded, firmly, but politely that I appreciated the commentary but I'm just looking around. Thats it. Microcenter is my location for finding computer related tech that no one else carry. I would give more starts, if their service was better. If you know what you want and know your tech, this place is heaven. They carry wide variety of hardware and software that can satisfy any type of customers. I never had any problems with purchases I made in this store, most of them worked perfectly and the ones that didn't I either returned it or exchanged it. Price wise they have good prices that in many cases beats amazon.com prices as well. I you looking for odd computer hardware and software here is the place, but do not expect a lot of service. After RadioShack went belly up here is the only place left for people like me. read more

Hands down, best place to shop for electronics. Do not go to Best Buy or Walmart or Office Depot.. you will get what you're looking for cheaper and at better quality here. The only annoying thing is the staff can be pushy with their sales trying to get you to buy warranties. Some staff are very knowledgeable while others are less. I buy my ram, Nvme SSD drives, cases, headsets, speakers, cd spindles and mice from here. It is like a modern day Circuit City with better prices and products. absolutely the worst service ive ever recieved in my entire life. a simple diagnostic takes days, the technician has -100 communication skills. said a certain price over text and phone but when i went to pick up my pc the price was more than double. did maintenance i did not approve of and then tried to charge me for said labor. i love microcenter but this will NEVER shop at this location ever again. they do not even deserve a 1 star rating. i am livid at my experience today. read more

One of my favorite geek/nerd stores. It's the Costco of computers and tech. If you like tech, go get lost. Always screaming deals on the basics (memory cards, usb hdmi etc cables, monitors). I am in here at least once a month for the basics and they are always very helpful, often going above and beyond hunting the warehouse for that little item I am looking for. Great store! You read more
