Michael Thomas brings their own line of single source in house roasted beans along with perfect execution on the espresso machine. They immediately won a customer for life when they did not ask what size cappuccino I would like, then delivered a perfectly executed cup. Unusual options like cold drip and siphon-made coffee are available here and worth a shot if you haven't had a chance to try them. Food options from Hartford Square are available from a case. We had a bad experience with our barista (my drink was the Africano and basically just tasted like milk). From the moment we walked in, she just seemed agitated and upset. I asked her if they had any breakfast items available and when told all they had was in the showcase (which was basically one quiche type thing with no label or description), I only asked what it is. She got frustrated and repeated "what's in here is all we have". This was still ok but when it came time to take our coffee and leave - she said we are at 25% capacity. So I asked if we could use the empty table outside (there were some 6 fully occupied tables outdoors) and she again said " we are 25% capacity". How are we as customers expected to know what 25% looks like for a coffee shop? So I said that she needs to tell us if there are at capacity or no, to which she says "you need to maintain distance from other tables" - by this time the table we were hoping to sit at got occupied without a lecture from the barista. I am not sure what she had against us. It was just strange that the onus of maintaining 25% capacity and social distancing was being put on us whereas almost all other places I've been to the number of tables available and distance between them is managed by the restaurant staff. Terrible experience, she just stressed all of us out and put us in a bad mood. Not going here again. read more

So, this is the second location of this awesome local coffee shop. Probably some of the best coffee in ABQ. The selection of both regular and decaf coffee beans is excellent. Any coffee, drink of course. And their pastries and snacks are awesome as well! This is a really great space to hang out in, either inside or outside. In summer, the courtyard is perfect, with plenty of shade. Sign up for their frequent shoppers card, and make sure they give you a free small coffee when you buy a pound of beans. Have had Michael Thomas many times and they are the best! I specifically recommend getting their coffee beans and they have really delicious mochas. They also practice Covid-safe measures like floor markings for social distancing, signs for masks required,well distanced patio, plexiglass/barrier for the employees and customers. More places should be like this. Stick with here instead of other coffee places that don't wear masks right or at all (Starbucks and Blunt Bros). read more

This place has an unbelievable coffee selection. 30 fair trade and standard single origin coffees, 11 blends, and 6 decaf coffee options when I came in today. They brew each of these coffees at any given time by your choice of Melitta pour over or a Hario Siphon. Additionally they have an iced coffee and a cold brew available. My friend got the fair trade Guatemala and I got the Ethiopia Sidamo Peaberry. Both were delicious and well prepared. There is a nice small selection of locally sourced chocolates and pastries. They also offer a variety of unique lattes and other espresso drinks. A person I was with had an orange mocha and he really enjoyed it. There is an awesome amount of seating inside and outside. Lastly, the two staff members here were very knowledgable about the company, as well as the products that they offer. They worked quickly and were very helpful. read more

Good selection of coffee, I like the decor, this place has a trendy vibe and they play good music.. It is cold outside but cozy inside. In the summer I can imagine this place being pretty cool to hang out at. They have a big glass garage door which lets in a ton of light which really adds to the decor and ambience. They probably open it up in the summer making the place awesome to sip coffee and people watch. The negatives are that while being a gourmet coffee shop the cappuccino I got while large and appreciated, the milk foam was more foam than smooth froth. It was too much. It felt more like the milk I make at home with my milk frother. Overall the cappuccino was good but not great. We ordered a delicious looking pastry that they forgot about, and when we got them they were cold and we had to heat them in the microwave. Which to me is just odd. I go to coffee shops because I'm a coffee snob, I've been to coffee shops around the world and have never seen a place that has microwaves that you have to use yourself for your food. Part of the attraction to coffee shops is great beverages, atmosphere and service. Hard to do that when you are popping it in the micro. The pastry was good though even though we nuked it. Remove the stupid toasters and microwaves and the place gets another star. read more

Try the bhakti chai. This has easily become one of my favorite coffee shop drinks. Seating can be limited, and they do allow dogs outside. (Ordering can be difficult with your pooch for they dont allow pets inside) so bring a friend to hold your fido aa you order inside. This location offers a variety of fair trade coffee goods, and has a local studio craft their coffee mugs. A sweet neighborhood coffee shop. read more

Just discovered this coffee shop recently and found charm in its design and overall feel. It has a very warm feeling to it being it seems to be a house remade into a coffee shop. The outdoor seating attracts me the most and the indoor seating seems to cater more to college students who are studying. The coffee was not bad but i was not a fan of the burrito i had as you have to heat it up yourself and it tasted a bit old and standardized. In all fairness i need to try more of the coffee before i finalize my views on this coffee shop. Would recommend overall tho. read more

Delicious coffee with awesome and knowledgeable baristas! I came in with a pretty broad question, just looking for some light/medium light coffee for my mom to use on the drip. She's not into specialty coffee at all, and the lady taking the orders took the time to school us with a lot of great knowledge and gave us a couple samples! They were very patient and helped us make good choices. I also got a Cubano which tasted great (double shot with sugar sandwiched by coffee inside the puck, so the shot is pulled through the sugar). During college, I always chose this coffee shop because I could peacefully write papers! As a wholesale buyer, I have to say that Michael Thomas is the best in Albuquerque. Huge selection of single origin beans and blends that actually had some thought behind them. They are one of the few shops in town that use both CHEMEX and Siphon brewing methods. There are some inconsistencies with staff member abilities, but it hardly takes away from the overall integrity of the shop. I will always recommend Michael Thomas to anyone. read more

Michael Thomas is great! Everything they do is A1. The atmosphere is very casual, yet classy. The cafe is in a refurbished older house which gives it a cozy feeling great for a cold day by the fireplace. The customers are all very nice and friendly and that is especially true with the staff. They were very helpful and even though I am not a big coffee snob, they helped select a rich Sumatra blend for me that was exactly what I needed. This place was recommended to me by someone and thought I would check it out. The courtyard is great to sit and enjoy your drink. They have many choices of beverages. I was with someone and I ordered and paid for both of us. His drink came out and I thought I mine would be out shortly. After several minutes of my drinking not coming out I went up to the counter to ask when it would be ready. The response was they didn't know there was a second drink. I got my drink eventually and what surprised me was that I didn't even get an apology for neglecting my order. I am not sure if it is worth going back. read more

I've had some delicious lattes from this place, but I've also had ones that just tasted like milk or just like black coffee (if I'd wanted black coffee, I would've ordered that instead of paying $5 for a latte made with soy milk). It depends on the barista, I suppose--some are great, but others are...not so great. If you want to take a chance and hope that you get a decent latte, that's your call (and I wish you the best of luck). The sour cream coffee cake (I think that's what it's called) is always delicious, though, so if you're ever nearby, it's worth a shot. read more

It's very exciting that Michael Thomas Coffee Roasters has opened their second location in Nob Hill (my neighborhood!). For those unfamiliar with their first shop, I think that it served the best coffee in Albuquerque (along with Zendo) but had one fatal flaw: a random location that was too far away to be walkable. Problem solved! My favorite drink at MT is the mizudashi, which is cold brewed iced coffee made using cold water immersion. According to the internet, this somehow removes the acidity of standard iced coffee, which makes sense because MT's mizudashi makes me feel like I'm tasting coffee for the first time. And it turns out that coffee tastes a lot like dark chocolate - no milk or cream needed. (I actually knew this but hadn't experienced it for years because I prefer iced drinks.) A small mizudashi costs about $4, which is steep (npi), but it seems pretty caffeinated for such a tiny glass. And the flavor is so bold and complex that it is difficult to drink quickly like I would with, say, a 20oz Starbucks iced coffee. Coffee is a little more expensive at MT, but this is a clear case of getting a much better product for a slightly higher price. If you can get a seat, the interior (modern, simple, lot's of natural light, wooden floors) is a delight for both socializing and studying. Seats along the walls have access to plugs. The table tops don't wobble and are made from a really nice dark wood. The music is quiet and pleasant. The wifi is free and fast. And the clientele ranges from young and hip to old and sophisticated. At MT you're not likely to find yourself next to a loud or rude person, which is a huge plus for a fussy curmudgeon like me. MT's food, or at least some of it, is from Hartford Square. I think that HS is good but not great, and this means that it falls short of MT's high standards. This might not be possible, but I my recommendation is that MT should try to establish a relationship with their competitors next door, Limonata, who can run circles around HS in the kitchen. read more

You know how most people have "their" coffee place that they go to? Well this one is mine. This is a place you can go and enjoy a cup coffee alone or with a friend. They have anything from a regular old cup of joe, to specialty coffee drinks and tea. They also have a small selection of food and desserts. My personal favorites are: hula mocha, nuttella latte, dark hot chocolate and some kind of magical pineapple tea. The drinks are always good. Something else that they almost always sell out of are the chocolate chip cookies. They're basically chocolate with a little bit of cookie. There are two small rooms for seating and a front/back patio area. Where ever you choose to sit is very pleasant and has a modern feel. I love this place! What a great place! So excited that my friends pointed me to Michael Thomas; now it is somewhere I will have to go often. For not being open for too long, they sure are busy already. There seems to be a nice loyal fan base with this roaster. The coffee is spot on. If you come in for a latte or a mocha you will not be disappointed. They have many different flavors available, and several that I have never even seen before (like the hawaiian mocha), but they all sound delicious. The food is catered by another local place. Their baked goods are hard to beat; and their burritos are decent. It's a great option for a light breakfast or a snack.
