Michael Azar Hair Salon - I went here to get highlights in my hair. They were booked, but the receptionist was able to accommodate me that very day. The salon is located in quaint little white house. It blended in so well with the residential houses that I almost passed it. I was nervous about parking, but they do have a gravel lot in the back of the salon to accommodate more clients. When I walked into the salon, I felt kind of fancy schmancy and thought to myself, I totally feel like Elle Woods right now. The clientele seemed like they got some moola in their pockets. The salon seemed really lively and conversations floweth left and right. Being Asian, I was really concerned with how the highlights were going to turn out. I was emphatic on not having any copper tinge to my highlights. The process took 1.5 hrs for a whole head highlight. My hairdresser was very thorough. It was considerate (and prudent) of her to ask me if I liked the color before she proceeded. I okayed it, even though it was difficult to tell what color it was due to the lighting in the back. I was happy with the results. I did not look too hoochi mama but you could definitely tell I have high lights. While I was there, the owner, M. Azar, stopped by and asked me how I was doing, assured me that my hair would look fantabulous, and checked up on me when I was finished. My hairdresser also offered me h2o in a champagne plastic cup (fancy (some sarcasm)). Overall I was very happy with the results. The price tag was $230 for full head highlight (170), blow-dry and style (30) and tip. Luckily, the net price was half that ( danke Scoutmob!). Even so, I cringed at the price. Oh well, I'll try anything at least once. I did feel a little fantabulous afterwards. One weird thing is they don't have a tip line on cc payments. So I had to tip in debit. One thing I did not approve of was the hairdresser basically stood there to see how much tip I was going to leave. Then she thought I wasn't going to leave a tip bc I didn't have any cash on me, so she had this grim expression on her face. Hold your horses lady, I tip! I followed Talmadge over to this salon. At first I was worried because the salon didn't really have too many reviews. However, I had nothing to worry about because the place is GREAT. The person I made my appointment with was really sweet and peppy and OFFERED information and directions. I looked forward to going to the salon already. When I got there, it was nice that they had a private lot to park in because I hate garages. The staff at the reception was nice and welcoming. Great assortment of magazines. The salon itself is spacious and nicely decorated. I was also happy to see they use Kerastase because I am a Kerastase fan. Talmadge cut and blow dried my hair. He took his time and everything came out PERFECT. I looked awesome when he was finished. I want to note that i am REALLY picky about my hair. I have long hair and I am very particular about what I want. I have visited many other top salons in atlanta and I have been unsatisfied. I am so glad I found Talmadge because he consistently produces great results and actually has skill and technique. Also, I knew he could flat iron but I didnt know he blow dried too. He left my hair looking soooooooooooo shiny and pretty. AND he does color too. AND I met Michael Azar and he was really friendly and welcoming. Obviously, i love this place. read more

My hair recently went into stage red. No, I'm not talking about a strawberry dye job. I'm talking full blown crisis mode. After being scarred by my last salon experience I convinced myself that I didn't really need professional dye jobs. Or haircuts. Basically anything that involved going to a salon. So I went for over 6 months without a trim and dyed my hair from a box three or four times. I know, I'm incorrigible. Eventually life caught up to me when I was offered an internship. Unfortunately my hair looked less than professional, so I couldn't put it off any longer. It was my darkest hour of need. As I walked into the salon the clouds parted, a ray of light shone down, and then Talmadge appeared. Seriously, the man is a godsend. Not only did he revive my poor hair with flattering layers, but he found the perfect deep chocolate brown shade for my base coat and accented it with not-too-blonde highlights. The second time I went to see him I brought in a picture of Emilia Clarke (sans the Daenerys blonde wig) and asked for a few tweaks to the color. Just like the first time, his work was absolutely flawless. When he was finished my hair didn't look like Emilia Clarke's - her hair looked like mine. After my date with Talmadge I got tons of compliments on my hair. Even my dad said he loved it and he hates it when I do anything to my hair. And my mother, well, as soon as she saw the first dye job she called and made an appointment for herself. (He's done fantastic work on her hair as well.) In addition to being an incredibly gifted stylist, he's just a pleasant guy and a wonderful conversationalist to boot. I normally don't like talking to hair stylists (I'm the type to bring a book or bury my face in my iPhone) but I happily chatted with him from the foils to the blow dry. As others have mentioned, yes, it is pricey, but you get what you pay for and you're paying for the best. Ladies, as you already know, it's all about the hair. And with the work he does, Talmadge is worth every penny and then some. I'll never let anyone else touch my hair again. read more

Why was I nervous? Ladies, agree with me on this. Changing hair stylists is the worst. But it was time and I am so glad that I did. I am IN LOVE - with Talmadge. I came to Michael Azar salon from a Yelp review and I could not be happier. When I called to make the appoinment, the receptionist really listened to what I wanted and suggested several stylists asking if I wanted same person for cut and color or could use two different people, etc. Getting an appointment was easy. The salon was great and easy to find - perfectly located from my office. It isn't pretentious at all for a Buckhead salon and the cuts and color coming out of there were great. You gotta see what comes out to really know a salon. Talmadge was great - he made me lose all my nervousness and we clicked instantly. I can hardly remember my old stylist's name. I cannot get over what he did to my hair. It was exactly what I wanted without having to dictate it all to him. I had a ScoutMob coupon to use (50% off) but the price on the haircut was so reasonable and Talmadge made my hair look like a million bucks that I decided against using it. I came here based on reviews because I have been unhappy with every salon for the past 6 years! Let me just say: it might be my favorite cut and salon experience. I asked for Talmadge because so many Yelpers said he was the best, and he was. He consulted with me before he washed my hair to understand what I was looking for. He spent a long time getting the cut perfect. He then showed me exactly how to style it and what tools to use. He offered to do a styling session with me (book as a dry style or updo appt) and I could bring in my tools from home and he would show me the best way to use them along with some tricks. I've followed Antonio Miller from salon to salon over the years. He's amazing and cuts several of my friend's hair on my recommendation. He's laid back, friendly, and a wizard with the scissors. I almost always get asked "who did your hair?" when I leave the salon. And really, isn't that all we want? To be showered with compliments? ;-) The salon is a relaxed, laid-back place, too. The staff are warm and friendly and somehow remember my name even though I probably only go every few months (hey - I have a toddler!). The decor has some modern "eco" touches but isn't one of those super sleek/snobby places. It's comfortable AND stylish. Hair cut is very affordable for Buckhead (around $60 but don't hold my mommy brain to that). Parking available behind the building. All in all, a relaxed, enjoyable experience. I love this place. Talmadge is amazing and detail-oriented, with a laundry list of certifications to boot. I have an edgier haircut, while my girlfriend has more traditional long hair and we both agree no one comes close to Talmadge's talent. He is a very creative and attentive perfectionist, and it's no wonder he travels the country teaching others his skills. Don't be afraid to try something new; he is excellent at knowing what will look great on you. I'll admit, i was hesitant to spend $70 on a haircut, but i promise once you do, you will never go anywhere else. It is worth every penny. The salon is beautiful and extremely clean. Sitting in the chair again for over 45 minutes past my appointment time and I finally got up and left. This was the second time I was seeing Michael Azar for a haircut. He's decent, capable hairdresser. Not overly friendly but definitely loves talking about himself. The first time I saw him I waited for over 45 mins past my appointment time and I just thought he was running late so I gave him the benefit of the doubt... boy was I wrong. 40 minutes in to my wait the second time while he was finishing up a lady sitting next me, I was willing to be patient again. Then he tuned around started on another persons hair!!! I literally had an out of body experience! As if I have hours in my day to dedicate to this guy and his schedule. Especially when the price is $70 for a men's haircut. They should be serving me champagne, valeting my car and rubbing my feet. I've been to some very fancy salons in LA and NYC and never have I seen this kind of behavior from a hairdresser! Oh, and when I got up and walked out the girl at the counter did not seemed surprised or apologetic. That's an hour of my life I'll never get back. I have never been so happy with any hair service so much in my life. I've been going to Shane since I was 16, and my grandmother has been his client for almost 12 years now. They're like family to us there, and when I went in to have color work done, I was referred to Alisa who is nothing short of MAGICAL with color!! I had all kinds of layers of dark colors in my hair and she manages to get EVEN, PERFECT blonde highlights into my hair WITHOUT frying it!! I'm absolutely over the moon. Good service. They squeeze me in a last-minute appointment before Xmas. However, I don't like my haircut. The style is very old fashioned. I am 100% Asian. We love certain type of hairstyle that suits our facial structure and hair. Even in Yelp, they said they specialize it Asian hair, I have to say "I don't think so". read more

My mother first took me to Michael Azar for a haircut when I was 2. I am now 23 and have gone to him ever since. He's been cutting my mother's hair and my aunt's hair since they were in their 20s and they're now in their late 50s! He gives the best haircuts. He's great at listening to what I want and I never leave feeling bad or like I didn't get what I came for. His cuts also last forever- it's been about 4 months since my last appointment and my layers are still perfect. Twice within the past two weeks people have asked me if I just had my hair done. Everyone always wants to know who does my hair! I always have Erica do my highlights- she is the go to person for blonde! My hair is naturally brown and whenever I tell people this, they are shocked. The highlights look so natural and amazing that people think it's my natural color. This salon is much bigger than his last one and much more open and bright. Everyone is very pleasant. There are lots of newer stylists that I don't know but from the reviews on here you have a good chance of getting great results no matter who you see. While it can run on the expensive side, it is worth every penny! My daughter is now 2 and I will be taking her to Michael for her first haircut later this year. They're definitely worth a shot! read more

I went to this salon upon a recommendation of one of the salon's customers. I requested that Talmage, the stylist with whom my appoint was scheduled, duplicate the hair style I was wearing. It was only after I got home and tried to deal with the cut that I realized one side was much longer than the other. When I had left the salon at the time of my appointment, Michael and Talmage assured me that if there were any problems when I got home and looked more closely at the cut, that I should not hesitate to contact them. That is what I did to no avail. For 3 days now I have left messages at the salon--2 for Talmage, 1 for Michael. My calls have not been returned. So much for customer service. I wish I had known this is how I would be treated. I will not be returning. read more

I hate to do this. I really do. My love for the salon has ended. I thought my long quest to find a great salon had finally ended when I came to Michael Azar. I am back on my quest again. My stylist was late twice for appointments I scheduled. Not his fault, actually. They had a temp receptionist filling in both times who either failed to tell my stylist the correct appointment time or didn't give him an appointment time at all. I drive all the way down to Buckhead for an appointment and then I have to wait for an hour for my stylist to show up because the receptionist didn't let him know that he even had an appointment in the morning. During my last appointment, I didn't want to have to wait for my stylist to arrive because I had some things to take care of in the afternoon. I had another stylist do my highlights while I waited for my regular stylist to arrive to do my cut. In the salon, the highlights looked great. When I styled my hair the next day, I realized that a rather large chunk of hair had not been touched up with the highlights. I called the salon on their next business day. The phone rang and rang and rang. I tried again the next day and the day after that. No one answers the phones there and no one calls back when you leave a message. I had another salon fix up my hair and opted not to return to Michael Azar. read more

It is the worst salon I have ever been too. The stylist I went to was good but why they would want to work for the owner I have no idea. He is rude, insulting and in your face. If they were the only salon in the USA I would rather go gray and never cut my hair. read more

Michael Azar (the owner) has been doing my hair for well over 10 years. He is brilliant, talented, kind and fun. I have never had a bad haircut or bad service with him. I drive in from the burbs to get my hair cut by him and it is totally worth the time and money. I have difficult hair and he always cuts it beautifully and in a way that I can style easily at home. i just moved to Atlanta a few months ago and was really nervous about getting my hair done, as I've had the best hairdresser in DC for years!! I'm a blonde and it's hard to find someone that does good highlights. Well, my friend recommended me to Steven and I couldn't be happier. He does a PHENOMENAL job and he's so much fun to chat with- makes for an all around awesome experience. I can tell him exactly what I want and don't want and he'll make suggestions that are spot on. Not to mention, the outcome has never been anything but perfection. I am always so happy when I leave and I'm never nervous that my hair will get screwed up. He's trustworthy, knowledgeable, and has a great personality!! What more could you ask for in a hair dresser! The prices at the salon are normal and what anyone getting good highlights should be used to paying. It's in a great location and has a wonderful atmosphere. Everyone was incredibly helpful when you called , from getting an appointment, to directions, to telling you where to park etc. The salon was a perfect location and size and Talmadge was fantastic.
