Is it over the top to say that this is the hair I've been dreaming of for my entire adult life? Maybe, but it's pretty dang close to accurate. I was admittedly a little wary of Jessica. I mean, I had just heard *too* many great things, and I am hella picky with my hair. There was no way she could live up to expectations, so I tried to keep them tempered. But sweet Jesus, total girl crush. First: Dada itself is a small cozy shop... complete with a disco ball and David Bowie over the waves. Major, major props for that. I loved the big antique comfy chairs and homey atmosphere: nothing obnoxiously trendy, no Lady Gaga booming out of the speakers. Exactly the kind of salon I'd put together if I had the means/creativity/desire. Oh, and I can walk from my house. Doesn't get any better. But then there's Jessica. First of all, she's an absolute dreamboat. I love love love when I envy my stylist's hair, and hers I most definitely did. But when I walked out of the salon I've got to admit that I envied no one's hair, because mine is perfect. I have asked for truly red hair for years, even using terms like "orange," "bright," and "vermillion" that others may typically shy away from. But I typically walk out with the same 'do, a lovely strawberry shade that is all parts pretty but no parts badass. Now, my hair is the perfect combination of both. Jessica was sure to explain the maintenance that comes with red hair which I appreciated and I feel like she really did her best to make my hair look stellar without it being crazily cost-prohibitive. I felt totally at ease in Jessica's chair, and after three hours felt like I had just spent the afternoon chatting with a great friend than having an awkward stumbling conversation with a total stranger. If you're looking for something different and innovative, I recommend Jessica with all that I've got. She's the first stylist in Atlanta with whom I really, honestly, truly look forward to having a repeat visit. Atlanta, I can now officially stick around. Late August 2012, I needed a haircut. My last hairstylist was the awful Brian Chung of Hair Sense along Buford Highway, whom I reviewed here some months ago. Hairstylists are so often a hit or a miss, so I was looking on Yelp for best and most reviewed salon in town. DADA had an average of 5 stars from over 40 reviews. I emailed Marie Dietz-Meyer for an appointment. She didn't have any slot for until early October but her colleagues did. I chose to wait for 5 weeks to see Marie. DADA is located in the hipster-infested heart of Inman Park. When I stepped inside the salon, seeing the extensive body art of not one but at least three of the people who work there was a little disconcerting for me - forgive my judgment but this just isn't my culture. But soon enough, Marie came out to greet me. She led me to her work station, served me a can of Diet Coke and asked me what I was looking for in my haircut appointment today. I said "Well, I'm turning 30 next year. I spent my 20s alternating between Japanese straightening and digital perming. I don't quite know what the natural state of my hair is anymore, but before all this artificial work, it had a natural wave. I resolve that in my 30s, I'm relying solely on the hands of a great hairstylist and her pair of scissors. No more damage to my hair....I also happen to be changing careers. I want to look chic, feminine, youthful but not high-strung (no Victoria Beckham!). I'm also very insecure about my fine hair so please keep the volume." Marie listened and confidently, she started working her way to giving me a sleek, modern, middle-length bob. I'm sick of getting haircuts where hardly anyone around notices the change. But my new bob drew attention and praises from colleagues, friends and ahem, men. I had my first appointment at Da Da a couple weeks ago and I am a fan! The shop is welcoming and intimate with simple decor. I also enjoy the subtle, good tunes in the background. I came to Da Da by way of Marie Dietz (formerly of Soda). Marie is a talented, knowledgeable stylist and an absolute riot to chat with (we laugh so much!) I am a serial "backseat driver" when it comes to getting my hair cut, but once I found Marie I was finally able to relax and let her do her thing (and she does it so well!). My hair is thick, short, complete with cowlicks and difficult to cut. Yet with Marie's knowledge in hair growth patterns and her talent for cutting my hair looks wonderful every time I leave her chair. I would recommend her over and over and over again. Andrew is one of the best hair stylists I've ever met. The main reason- he does a very thorough assessment before he even touches your hair. I've been to a plethora of "stylists" in the Atlanta area who appeared to be listening to me-then I ended up with something I never asked for.... Enters Andrew- he is very talented, especially with curly hair, I've received a number of compliments. And let's face it-there is a huge market for stylists who can tame multi-textured hair. Andrew Keller-Bradshaw has been cutting and coloring my hair for 13 years and I continue to see him despite the fact that I now live in NYC-I just can't find anyone else who can make my hair look as good as he can. The Kind of Hair Stylist That Makes You Cry. In A Good Way. I'm adventurous when it comes to my hair and I prefer visionary, wizard scissor-wielders, whom will tailor individual cuts to my face shape, personality, and aesthetic, rather than a technically proficient stylist who requires a photo example and lots of nudging and convincing. I have found many hair dressers in Atlanta to be reluctant to try anything avant garde or edgy, even when I promise to sign off on a "I swear to god, I won't complain" waiver. Often times, they'll actually try to talk me OUT of my Most Awesome Idea. I guess they must encounter a lot of regretful clients, so I understand the hesitation to some degree, but hotdamn, I need somewhere to go, too! And now I've found it. I met Jessica for the first time today and am certain I have met my Fearless Hair's Love. First of all, the girl is hot and has style. Being hot is not a requirement to become my stylist, but I don't like frumpy ladies up in my shit. I can't trust you with my locks if you look like you have a bake sale to go to in 40 minutes. Secondly, she was ecstatic when I showed her the haircut I wanted. That's exactly the kind of reaction I need in a stylist partner. While she complimented my long dark hair in its current state, she didn't show a morsel of hesitation in cutting 17 inches off in one fell swoop. FINALLY! I am over the moon with my bitchin' hair. Does David Armstrong need another 5-star review? Objectively speaking, probably not. But, will another 5-star review further cement his status as the very best hairdresser, if not human being, in Atlanta? Without a doubt. I have only been going to David for a few months now, but I absolutely could not be happier. I started going to him when the man who gave me the best hair-cuts of my life vanished without a word. (As a side note: Where are you Jack?) After waiting 34 years for such a stylist, I came to David with very high hopes and a recent disaster (Do they not teach the art of cutting fine, curly hair in cosmetology school?) He has exceeded every expectation. My cut is lovely, my layers aren't a reverse mullet and my color is perfect. Now, on to David as a human, he is ridiculously engaging and funny, he remembers things I have told him from one appointment to the next and he actually gave me some really wonderful advice after a heartbreak. In other words, David cares. He cares that you feel beautiful and look beautiful or handsome or edgy or whatever it is you want for yourself. He also won't try to sell you on mounds of product. Now, the salon. There is only street parking available. Some people don't care. If you are like me, and you parallel park like a wounded bumble bee trying to escape a sealed car, then you do worry. Fear not, there is ample space, no lines to align with and no meters. Anyone can park here. If you are thinking about booking with him, you should, however, do it now. His schedule is full and you will probably wait six weeks for your first appointment. After the first appointment it is, of course, a breeze because you can just book in advance. I would plan to arrive a little early so that you can stop in at Proof Bakeshop for a latte, but that is another review. read more

My guardian hair angel who delivered me from the clutches of peroxide. Jessica is a genius when it comes to color. i mean, actual color. Bold, intrepid, full-bodied color. This is not a girl you go to for highlights when your naturally blond hair starts playing for the brunette team. I recently had to have a hair intervention with myself. I was like, "Self, all this highlights business is wrecking your hair. Sure, maybe you were blond like, 15 years ago, but now you're just trying to hide all that dishwater. And it's frying your hair. Is that what you want, Self? Don't you want to look pretty? That shit is straight up straw. Go and call Jessica and we'll get this all straightened out". And then I was like, fine. fine. I'll call her. And without hesitation she took me from Vanna Whitetrash to a warm chestnut brown that's shiny and gorgeous. I wear it down all the time now. I blow dry it. It's SHINY, y'all! I even wear less makeup because it complements my complexion so much. Homegirl is keen and fearless. Not recommended for the faint of heart or those who are emotionally invested in maintaining the same hairdo their whole lives. But if you jump, she'll make sure you land on your feet. And love it. I have been going to the same hair stylist in Baton Rouge since I was 14 years old but decided that it was time to find someone nearby that I would trust with my hair. David mentioned that I was one of 10 Indian girls that had mentioned they scheduled an appointment with him after seeing reviews on Yelp - ha! I loved the salon and he was super warm and friendly as soon as I walked in. He talked with me about my hair and what I was looking for and how he could help me get there. I love any hair stylist that gives their opinion on what would look best and David definitely does that. My hair is very thick and coarse and David brought life back to it. Well, I FINALLY made it over to see Jessica Dorman after more than a year of trying to coordinate my hair's schedule with hers! Every time my hair decided it was time to to run for help, she was booked 8 weeks out & I just couldn't wait - she's a busy girl! When I arrived at the salon, I was greeted warmly by Robin, who was super nice and welcoming and made sure I had a drink and was comfortable while I waited on Jessica. The space is great, not pretentious, not overly cool, but just right & easy to relax in. Jessica was exactly on time for our appointment, and I felt right at home with her from the minute she started. We talked for a bit about what to do with my hair, which I've been trying to grow but which I realize (as I always do when I try to grow my hair) is just not a practical goal for me with my fine little locks that go lifeless with too much length. Other than a few pictures of what I thought were cute styles, I'm not sure I was all that helpful in helping her understand what I DID want, I could really only tell her what I DIDN'T want (nothing too short, no razoring, and no stacking the back like we're still living in the 80s and like sooooo many stylists still want to do because of my head shape or their inability to vary their style of cutting hair). In the end, I turned over creative control to her and told her I'd trust whatever magic she wanted to work. She gave me beautiful little wispy layers, then layered and blunt-cut the back to give me more body. She executed a rich dark auburn color perfectly, including my trademark blonde streak in front - no bleeding of the dark color onto the blond pieces and the washing and re-washing to clean up the blonde! She uses Redken color, which, after today, I'm prepared to say is also one of my favorites - no itching, no discomfort, just brilliant shine and gorgeous color! She also didn't leave color around my face or on my ears or neck - no painful post-color skin-reddening scrubbing required! She didn't try to skin me by taking my hair too short - the cut is cute and feminine and funky and fun and perfectly balanced! My new cut & color garnered compliments almost immediately! But be warned: a "do" here does not come cheap. My cut and color was $225, which inspired sticker shock even after 20 years of bouncing around Atlanta to see some uber talented stylists. Update after about a month: the color still looks good, but the grow-out went downhill starting at about 2 weeks out. Not what I consider a sign of a solid cut (as I've had with cuts from some other stylists I've loved and, so unfortunately, lost). Given that and the steep price, I'm leaving a 4-star review for the color & will likely give some other stylists I've been eyeing a try next time around. read more

DAVID ARMSTRONG IS SO GREAT. I just moved to Atlanta, and the hardest thing about a new place is finding someone I trust to do my hair. I just had a really sad haircut elsewhere, and needed to find someone to fix it and give me fresh highlights. This review is for Jessica Dorman at Dada... I always get anxiety when I'm about to cut my hair... It's just a stressful experience especially because I have thick, wavy hair and I am a pretty low-maintenance kinda gal (like- generally my hair is in a braid, ponytail, or bun because my job keeps me busy outside) This haircut was even more stressful and anxiety-ridden because I was donating to locks of love and therefore was cutting about a foot off of my hair. Eek! I know it's for a great cause and everything but still a hard thing to do. So, I'd been asking around with my girlfriends (the ones that have good hair, that is) for where to go. And this name kept popping up... "Hot Jessica this and Hot Jessica that." Of course, with a name like Hot Jessica and being at a cute shop in Inman Park, I thought... Probably too expensive for me. WRONG. Her haircuts are only $55. Which is totally affordable. So I booked my appointment and waited in anticipation. I looked at haircuts but couldn't really come up with anything so decided to just let her go for it... A locks of love haircut is weird because you have to cut the ponytail/braid off in a hunk which leaves the rest of the hair shapeless and weird. She cut it off in one quick, painless motion and started snipping away... I'm not sure what happened in between then and the finished product but it was nothing short of magic. I told her what I wanted and somehow she made it happen- and it's totally manageable! It looked great when she styled it for me- but the true test came the next day when I was knee-deep in a wetland and sweating, then I was able to make a few quick adjustments and... voila! I had a hair *style* again! The next day was my high-school reunion and the haircut dressed up wonderfully! I'm done. No more shopping around for hair stylists. She's got a little cutout of Lucille from Arrested Development on her shelf with styling products, Sufjan Stevens on the stereo, and is just so super-cool (oh, and awesome at what she does) I can't imagine going elsewhere! read more

I'm a regular at DADA and have been seeing Dorothy there for years and have never had a negative experience. Upon getting engaged I knew I wanted to have my hair worn up and was recommended, by my regular lady, to talk to Jennifer, another stylist at the salon. Jennifer was extremely easy to work with and she was truly great. She did the hair for myself as well as my 3 bridesmaids, my mom, and my flower girl and we were all more than satisfied with how everything turned out. The day of my wedding it absolutely poured all day and yet my hair remained up the entire night and not a single strand was moved out of place- I received tons of compliments on how great it looked! I moved back to Atlanta a couple months ago after living in Amsterdam and having what I called "Dutch Haus Frau" cuts and searched Yelp for someone who could do something with my super thick hair. Marie had great reviews and after waiting 6 weeks to finally get in, I finally had my appointment at Dada yesterday. My hair was a big bushy fright and Marie took out her razor and made everything beautiful again. DANG. I haven't had hair like that since I lived in San Francisco. It's taken me awhile to write this, basically because Marie already has approximately 759 five star reviews and I figured that one more would be piling on and not fair to the other salons of Atlanta. [I almost wrote that Marie is 'the bomb dot com,' but I stopped myself, googled that already-dated phrase and found a list of alternative phrases, the first of which was 'the pomme dot bon,' which I like a lot better. She is totally a good apple.] Some people love getting haircuts, but for me, it's usually more of a chore. Maybe it's because I have super thick hair that's been massacred in the past, or had some awkward conversationalists cut my hair. You know those haircuts where you're sitting in the chair silently, staring down at a copy of Redbook from two months ago? There is no need to bring extra reading material when Marie cuts your hair. She's super fun. She's also really good at interpreting vague directions and hand gestures and turning them into great haircuts. She really gets what will work with your hair and what won't. It can take awhile to get an appointment, but that's just a testament to Marie's skillz. DADA is a nice space that feels homey and unpretentious and it's conveniently located next to Dough, if you feel like a post-haircut snack. read more

Thank goodness I took the advice of the Yelp community and booked an appointment here. After 2 years of searching and a smorgasbord of hair experiences, I have found the perfect salon and more importantly the most incredible stylist. Marie did my hair and I feel that I'm not exaggerating in the slightest when I say this was the best hair appointment I've ever had. She's extraverted, warm and truly wonderful to be around, but beyond her general awesomeness, the lady has some amazing talent when it comes to color. After dying my hair back to it's natural color, it was decided it needed to be a little bit blonder for my wedding. Marie listened to my long winded explanation of what I wanted my hair to look like and worked her magic. My hair looks the best it has in years and I booked my next appointment before I walked out of that salon. The concept behind DADA is pretty great too, although anything named after an art movement gets a gold star in my book. It's a collective and thankfully this one doesn't have a single drum circle or dreadlock in sight. It's what a collective should be, creative minds coming together in a common space. The cost is pretty standard for hair in Atlanta, but unlike most places, I really feel like I'm getting my money's worth at DADA. Each stylist had a steady stream of clients and there was a lot of laughter and amazing customer service here. I am looking forward to my next appointment already! read more

I cannot say enough about DADA, Marie Dietz-Meyer, and the rest of the foxy stylists who work there. I first went to the salon over a year ago after Jessica worked some voodoo magic on my best friend's impossibly curly hair. I was in desperate need of a major tune-up, but Jessica was booked solid so she referred me to Marie and my life was never the same. Marie chopped and dyed my super long, super thick, blonde, wavy hair into a crazy sexy, dark brown creation that requires little to no effort on a day to day basis and gets me more compliments than I can count. Friends who have known me for years as a blonde swear that my color now seems much more natural than the one I was actually born with and the cut, even as it evolves with my changing tastes, is always exactly what I want. Marie's work is so good, I have even been approached on the street by some stylists who wanted me to be a hair model for them. Before going to Marie, I was a once a year salon patron and never went to the same stylist twice, but now I'm in there like clockwork, every six or seven weeks for a root job and a trim (and some giggles). I refer all of my friends to her (or Jessica if Marie's all booked, because that girl's got mad skillz too) and they have always come back satisfied customers. I can honestly say that every trip I take to DADA is more of an opportunity to hang out with one of my good friends who happens to be a hair wizard than simply a service appointment at a generic salon. read more

I've been going to Jennifer Kelley (formerly at Soda) and now at Dada for years. She has consistently done a fantastic job on my hair cut and color and has become a great friend. I constantly get compliments on my cut and color and I can honestly say it is 100% because of Jennifer. Random people have literally stopped me and public and one time a Pilates trainer leaned over mid-session and stroked my hair and asked if it was my natural color. I get tons of insane and lovely compliments on my hair, which I basically live for. An easy to access Intown salon between two amazing food spots and across from the Inman Park MARTA station. Brenton Anderson gave me an outstanding cut and color. I have followed Brenton for 15 years and he is better than ever. He's an incredibly talented stylist both cut and color and stays up on the latest trends and techniques. I wouldn't say I'm a salon type of guy. I enjoy eating meat, watching sports, and building decks. And I enjoy Jessica's haircuts. Before finding Jessica, I endured years of consistently inconsistent haircuts. I've come to the realization that it's worth finding someone that knows what they're doing. Jessica does not disappoint, and I always leave with the bit of confidence that I need. If I have a job interview - BAM - she gives me the bright up-and-comer haircut. A hot date with a hipster - THWAP - the ever so slightly modified this-guy-is-worth-getting-to-know haircut. I get my cut and color done by Dorothy, and it's amazing every time. I have crazy difficult hair--thick head of baby fine, easily damaged, curly hair--and she's handled it no problem since I started going to her a couple of years ago. I am yet another Jessica Dorman follower and now I go to Da Da for her services. Jessica is super talented as well as a great person, so changing salons took no thought. Of course Jessica continues to be easy to set appointments with, prompt in confirming, and of course ready to go when you arrive. Not only do you get all of that but she listens, and gives you awesome hair. Da Da is in a really great location and easy to get to. I really like the setting as it is relaxed, clean and peaceful. I fully agree with Zack! Jessica Dorman is the best stylist I have ever been to in Atlanta. I first got my hair cut by her at Soda Salon about a year and a half ago. When she told me that Soda was closing and she was moving over to Dada, it was a no-brainer that I would follow her over to her new digs! I went for the first time yesterday and the location is great, just off Dekalb Ave in Inman Park. The salon has cool, vintage chairs and a simple warm feel to it that puts you at ease. And, disco balls. Who can hate on disco balls? But, back to Jessica! Every cut I have ever gotten from her has been on point. As I mentioned in a previous review for Soda, I have wavy hair and all the stylists I've ever been to tend to want to straighten it. I've always thought of my waves as a frizzy curse b/c no one took the time to give them the love they deserved. Since Jessica shares similar curly locks, she knows how to cut my hair so that the waves style beautifully and feel more like a blessing than a curse. She always takes the time to answer my questions about products and how best to style my cut too. I recently got my color done by her and she did a fantastic job with it. I have referred a handful of girlfriends to Jessica and they are now loyal clients as well. One of them just got her long hair chopped by Jessica and she said it's the only short cut she's ever gotten that she actually loves! Sweet Marie has been cutting and coloring my hair for a hot minute now and I just LURVE her! So much so that I've followed her from Soda to DaDa and haven't entertained the thought of seeing someone else! I used to be somewhat of a salon slut... moving from one shop to another because someone gave me a referral or I was drawn in by a cute name or decor, but Marie's turned me into a real one-salon lady! My hair always looks great, Marie and the other girls always provide entertainment in the way of good conversation and on occasion Jessica will serenade the group. I recommend going here and seeing Dorothy McClure. I now understand why people go to see her, she's super professional and knows how to cut hair better than all the past stylists I've seen.
