I've been meaning to write this review for so long, and I finally made a Yelp account just to do it. Mimi is the best! She gave me an American Wave perm a year ago, and it still looks amazing now. I have naturally straight hair, and I was looking for some extra texture and volume. I had never colored or permed my hair before, so I was nervous about the result, but it exceeded all of my expectations. I have had perfect beach waves for months, and I can just wash and air dry my hair without worrying about styling it every day. I live in NYC now, but I'm waiting to visit Shear Love to get my hair done again. I'm including a current photo so you can see the difference between my natural hair and the waves. I recently booked an appointment with Mimi and was impressed by how welcoming her salon felt the moment I walked in. She offered me a drink and listened patiently as I described the style I wanted. Her initial snip-and-check approach suggested she knew exactly what she was doing. By the time she finished, though, the layers looked a bit more jagged than blended, giving what I'd asked for a slightly unintentional edge. The toner she used was lovely at first glance, but it seemed to mellow out unevenly after just a couple of washes--roots a touch too warm, ends a touch too cool. I appreciated her willingness to chat through tweaks at the sink, yet the final shape didn't hold its form as long as I'd hoped. Mimi's kindness and tidy space certainly make for a pleasant visit. If you're someone who doesn't mind rebooking a tweak or two to dial in exactly what you had in mind, she might be the right fit. Otherwise, you may want to bring very detailed photos--and perhaps an extra hour to refine things afterward. read more

I'm a happy camper. As a transplant from Charlotte, I really needed someone to do my hair without having expensive "city" prices (i.e. paying over $200 for some basic color on my then-very short hair... great color but it was literally only 1/5 of my hair). I yelped like crazy; I wanted to find a place that didn't just do everyone's hair the same (you know: ombré) but could switch it up if I wanted intense color, like purple. I, then, physically checked out each salon. When I walked into Shear Love, it felt homely. I adored how well-decorated it was, the staff was extremely friendly but what topped it was the music. (A mixture of old school hip-hop and indie? Yes please!) I've been continuously adding to my ombré since January and it's becoming longer. When looking for a salon, I debated on whether to just dye my hair back to a natural black because my results weren't exactly what I wanted. During my consultation, I asked honestly what the hair stylist thought of my hair and he agreed that it was very bottom heavy and slightly brassy. So for him being honest, that gave the salon extra points. Meet: BILLY. He was very friendly and heard my concerns with an open ear. I'm dreadfully terrified that I'd get orange/yellow hair (Ugh... that one salon in near the Met in Charlotte) but he assured me that he wouldn't let me leave here with brassy hair. 3 hours later (I have a lot of hair, guys. One time it took my gf 4.5 hours to dye my hair when it was super long), I had a great ashy brown ombré! It's the literal perfect shade for autumn. The lighter pieces were brought up. My ends were no longer yellow but cool grey-blonde (I don't know if that was intentional but I actually like it so I didn't question, lol). He also assured me that if I felt like my hair was getting a different color to come back for a color glaze (only $20!!). Also, they do blow-outs for $35 which is pretty good for a legit salon. I never plan to get my hair cut. Many people do, I am aware. Me? I'll just happen to be driving home from work or at a gas station pumping gas and pondering life when BAM! the urge to change/cut my hair hits. You can imagine, with my impulsive urges, it is always quite hard to find a place that will fit me in at the last minute. Enter Shear Love. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. This is an intimate salon (Maybe 4 chairs?) located across from the Plaza/Urban Outfitters off Ponce. Upon walking in, I was nervous. It was 7 pm, they closed at 8. Would they see me? Would the atmosphere be pretentious? Would I feel awkward? Not at all! Mimi greeted me warmly as did a gentleman, I didn't catch his name. They were warm, personable, and professional. They were able to fit me right in with a stylist named Try. I cannot say enough good things about Try. She is AMAZING. Not only does she have a wonderful personality, but the woman has skills! Here is the checklist: 1) Was able to sit and consult with me before cutting. She took my vision and worked with me to find a cut that fit my face shape and frame. I LOVE my hair! 2) She can work with super thick wavy hair. She took her time blowing it out (Not flat ironing it like many people do). That way it had bounce and shine. 3) She was chatty, personable, and interesting. But also focused while she cut and didn't feel offended when I grew quiet and sleepy. I almost don't want to tell y'all about her so that she doesn't get stolen away! But she really deserves the credit. So yeah, go to Shear Love and yes, see Try. Hip. Cozy. Quality. Billy and Mimi are amazing! This is not your run of the mill stuffy chain salon. Upon walking in, I was delighted by the adorable and whimsical decorations - the classic Banksy balloon print, frames containing uplifting handwritten quotations, a wall of inspirational magazine cut-outs (from Ryan Gosling to an ad for HBO's Girls). I came in for a color appointment with Billy who I first met a few years ago when he was at the Paul Mitchell school in Atlanta. He invited me in to do my color while he is building his portfolio. I was offered a beverage as he walked me to my chair. The salon is very small and cozy with only 5 or 6 chairs in the middle of the floor, so it makes for a family feel. The stylists are close enough to chat with one another and even offer input on styling strategies. With Mimi's guidance, Billy walked me through the coloring process, explaining the strategy of adding some dimensional highlights to my hair for a natural look. I'm always concerned about damaging my hair when I get it colored, so I asked Billy about the chemicals of the color. He reassured me about the conditioning properties of the color that they use at the salon, so I felt good about being in his expert hands. As he worked his way through my hair, Mimi checked in and shared a few tips and tricks. I could tell that she is very knowledgeable and passionate about doing hair, so it was great to see her passing that along to her staff members. As I waited for my color to process, Billy set me up with some juicy magazines. He did a wonderful job of making me feel comfortable every step of the way. After blowing out my newly tinted hair and leaving me with a stellar new look, Billy sent me off with some Davines samples of shampoo and conditioner and offered some best use instructions. I got a great deal on the hair treatment since Billy is still in training, but I would definitely return and pay full price for the services and the experience. Magical. I wanted purple hair. Yes, purple hair (specifically lilac hair but that is hard to get and fades quickly). In a previous attempt to get my hair looking purple it had failed at another salon. The previous salon had bleached the ends (ombré) and colored it slightly fuchsia. It washed out like immediately and was really brassy. They had charged me a lot too. I asked Steven if he could get my hair where I wanted it to be. He totally exceeded my expectations. I know it's not magic but expertise. The color is truly purple/violet (looks so good), and the cut it excellent. I've never been disappointed by a cut by Steven. Go here. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE. I went in for the first time yesterday. My appointment was with Carla. I had let my hair grow out to my shoulders for my wedding and it was time to chop it off and go back to my normal bob hair style. This has been the salon I have been going to for the past year, and I'm not planning on changing it! Everyone there is friendly, professional, and accommodating. I'll walk in and am immediately greeted by everyone and am offered a selection of fancy beverages (tea, espresso, etc.) the whole vibe of the place is chill and unique, with alternative music playing, decorations hanging over the hair washing sinks that make you feel like you are in a different world, and lots of wall art to stare at while you're sitting getting your hair done. I see Sarah every time I go, and she's awesome! I strive to have cool hair like her, and she is also very talented and a chill person to talk to. I'm not picky when it comes to my hair so I will often come in and just give her a general idea of what I want and ask her what she thinks will work best, and she works her magic. They are changing their location soon and the staff has done a great job keeping me updated on when and where they'll be moving. I never go to salons but when I do...I go to Shear Love. Well, actually, this was my first time here but it most certainly won't be my last. After months of putting off fixing my roots and nasty golden, brassy blonde, I finally decided it was time to go see a professional. I did my homework, on Yelp of course, and found Shear Love with pretty much close to perfect reviews. I was sold. Even setting up an appointment online was easy! I arrived right when they opened and was greeted by Billy, who was very cheerful and made me feel welcomed immediately (he is an absolute doll). I showed him some pictures of what I was trying to put into words and he walked me through exactly what he was thinking, reassuring me every step of the way. About an hour and some great conversations later, I didn't even recognize myself! I have never seen my hair look so natural. It was stunning. Absolutely beautiful! Billy matched the color to my natural roots and blended everything together so perfectly. I'm still beside myself. After my color, I had Gwen cut my hair. Gwen was so refreshing to have as a stylist. We went through every part of my hair and discussed why I was having trouble with it and what she would do to fix it. Amazing. She even showed me ways to style my hair as she did at the salon. After my first visit to Shear Love, I'm kinda glad that my previous stylist disappeared off the face of the earth... So I went to make an appointment with my previous stylist, only to find that she was no longer at the salon that I'd been visiting. So again I started my search for someone to whip my hair into shape. Enter Shear Love. I spent a couple of minutes looking at their website and decided that I'd make an appointment with Try. My hair had gotten seriously out of control, so I made an appointment for the next afternoon. And you know what? Best decision of my life. Not only did she give me the best damn haircut I've ever had (that's not an exaggeration), she was super friendly and had me laughing the entire time. I gave her a basic description of what I was looking for and I walked out the most satisfied I have ever been with a stylist. I could not be happier with my hair and I'll definitely be back when I start to look a little shaggy again. read more

I hate to do this but I was Very unhappy with what Billy gave me. I went in with a picture of the color I wanted. It was a very big change and we talked in length about it. Billy was very nice and told me what he was doing at each step. Problem was he skipped a step. I wanted to go dark on the roots with an ombre to gray. He darkened the roots and bleached the rest all at the same time. After the rinse, he applied a glaze and that was it. No purple toner to take out the Orange/yellow of it, so I ended up looking like "real slim shady". I look like a throwback to 2001 when everyone was bleaching their hair at home. I didn't have to pay $150 for these results. When I told him it looked blonde, he says "no it's silver". Wtf? You be the judge. I am going to a different salon, where hopefully they can fix my destroyed hair. read more

First thing you should know is that this is a training salon -- that may be common knowledge to some, it was NOT to me. I have (had...) long, thick, curly hair and needed a cut badly after a lot of dyeing damaged my ends to frazzled knotted messes. I guess it was my mistake that I went for a lower-priced salon rather than a curly hair specialist, but I assumed she could take off a few inches without too much damage. Well... The good part of this salon is that they were very warm and welcoming, grabbed me a beer, made nice chitchat during the fateful cut. The people are honestly very, very nice. The bad part is that they do not know how to cut curly hair, or at least my stylist didn't. My layers are all one length save for a strange shelf-like chunk at the bottom. She also combed my hair out as it dried, so by the end I had a huge 'fro; no wonder she couldn't tell what layers were what. I knew my hair looked poofed out and ridiculous when I left, but I figured I'd just go home and re-style and I'd be set.... wrong. It took one day to realize my layers were choppy and all wrong. I panicked, contacted the salon, and they were receptive to my complaints and offered to let me come back in to have it fixed. I considered it, but the owner said she wanted to blow my hair out and trim it dry... I don't understand why they'd cut my hair straight if I always wear it curly (I told my stylist I always wear it curly as she was cutting it ). Added to the fact that I was nervous about them chopping even MORE of my hair off (I'm from rib-cage length to collarbone length at this point), I decided to just get my hair done by my normal stylist in my hometown rather than returning to Shear Love. Bottom line -- the salon is cute, people are nice, and they didn't give me an attitude when I wasn't happy. If you have straight hair, need a very simple cut, and don't have anything to challenging to give them, I'm sure it'd be fine. It's inexpensive and centrally located, with plenty of parking. I wish I had a better outcome with my hair, because the rest of the experience was just fine. read more

After visiting several salons and make multiple attempts to get rid of it she finally made a dent the first time I went to see her. The second time the red was just about gone. People with curly hair look no further! I'm mixed and have very curly hair with a varying curl pattern across my head. Varying curl patterns are very common with curly hair and this usually results in an uneven cut because stylists cut the hair like straight hair and when the curls dry - boom uneven cut. I have dealt with mediocre to terrible haircuts most of my life (I'm 28) despite trying countless stylists (even some haircuts in the $150 range!). I am so so happy with the cut I received at Mimi's salon. Wow! Keesha and Mimi are both fantastic. Also, I agree with Ross R.'s comment regarding Mimi's relationship with her team. Fellow dudes, don't be afraid of going to a salon! If you're trying to get chicks or impress the boss, you're going to need to look good and this place delivers. You can tell Shear Love is awesome as soon as you walk in. Cool art and pleasant smells. The salon is open and inviting and is kept clean. Try Serino is my stylist of choice and has been for the past 6 months or so. I like to keep it simple but I've seen her do much more complicated and delicate jobs and she makes everyone look great. Kathia and I are so pleased to see someone as talented as Mimi starting her own business. She has been cutting our hair for years. We love her so much we let her give our first born child his first hair cut. (No lie-- even though this is not a kid's shop.) As for the real haircuts, Mimi is a patient listener and knows how to deal with plain and difficult hair. She can deliver what you want or change when you need it. She took a foot off my wife's hair one day-- a major change --and I still loved it. This is a great place for the guys too-- always reliable and easy to schedule, and Mimi and team know how to deliver consistency. This is right in Midtown and there is free parking out behind the Majestic. You can drop by for a cut and pick up food at Whole Foods on the way back to the office or home. Mimi keeps a very collegial relationship with her team, and you can tell she treats them with respect, so you can expect a higher caliber unlike other Atlanta salons that treat them like little worker bees who can just take or leave the job. For a long time I've been debating whether or not to add color other than brown to my hair & I finally did it! Easily made an appointment with Billy on a Saturday afternoon and he did a fantastic job! I entered not knowing exactly what color i wanted to get, but after discussing it with him he came up with a good idea. While I was getting my hair done, a girl next to me was getting her hair all finished up and it looked great! Billy had added pops of red to her hair and it looked really good so i knew i was in good hands. In the end, it turned out really great! I had subtle blue highlights which was perfect since i was in between either getting my whole head blue and looking crazy or dyeing it a boring brown. I have super thick, not straight but not curly hair that I've been at war with as long as I remember. I never expected much in the way of style from my hair cut, except for it to clean up the ends and maybe add bangs occasionally. Sara is SO wonderful! I am terrible at scheduling appointments in advance, and she was able to squeeze me in on a weekend morning. Not only that, but Sara also touched up my roots, giving me a lovely strawberry/ red color that was blended so well, and gave me an excellent cut. It is practically unheard of to just tell your hair stylist to "do what they do", but that is how much I trust Mimi with my hair. I tell her the basics... I need to be able to have a pony tail, and I need it low maintenance. She never fails to be considerate of these two things while giving me a fresh and fun haircut that fits my personality. The salon itself is adorable. Perfect size. It has a hip but not too cool vibe, surrounded by art by some of Atlanta's finest on the walls. I've waited a long time to leave this review. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't reacting in the heat of the moment. I moved to ATL two years ago. I'm in the aviation industry, so I kept flying back and forth for all my appointments. (hair, dentist, etc) Finally, I decided to stop the madness and get new appointments in ATL. First, my hair. I read about a few on Yelp, and I decided on Shear Love. I made an appointment with Brittany. I just wanted a trim and highlights. She did the highlights, cut a little and decided to cut more when it was dry. Once dry, I mentioned to her that they looked brassy, so she put some toner on. After two shampoos and a burning scalp, parts of my hair were blue. I sat in that chair for five hours. I was upset, yet I didn't show it. When I went to pay, they charged me for everything--barely even an apology. I was hurt. I left, but then decided to go back in to demand a little justice. When I'm mad, I cry, so I expressed my frustration with tears streaming down my face. The girl who did my hair hid in the back while I talked to the owner. I told her that I was charged for the cut, when she didn't even finish the cut. I paid $90 to sit in that chair for FIVE HOURS, scalp burning, with blue hair. I eventually went back so she could attempt to fix the disaster that was my hair. Of course I haven't been back. I felt so disrespected. I only see great reviews for this place, and maybe this only happened to me, but I know, at least in my line of work, that when a customer is wronged, you do everything in your power to make it right. 1) I asked for the "Creative" rate listed on their website ($35). They gave me a girl who was obviously new, and yet they charged me the "Progeny" rate ($45). 2) The haircut took TWO HOURS, for what was basically a trim. Now I understand haircuts take a bit longer in the south (which is fine!) but two hours for a trim?! 3) I clearly asked for long, sideswept bangs. And she hacked my bangs across my forehead! 4) She straightened my hair. To. Death. Guess they don't actually care much about haircare? read more

I love this salon! There is beautiful light, its so well designed, there is always a happy atmosphere- you can sip on an expresso and just let everyone take care of you! They are super flexible with walk-ins, which is great for me because I often fail to plan ahead with haircuts. They do funky cuts, ALL of the colors, and know how to keep it simple and conservative if that's your jam (it isn't mine, though, so I know they rock out as well). Billy does my color, and he is SO thoughtful and creative. We have great communication, and he is really informative about the process. Plus, he's great fun!! I've gotten my hair cut by a bunch of different stylists here, and they always do a top-notch job. Plus, they can fix it where others fail. I traveled out of town and got a haircut elsewhere, and things were a little off. I came back to Shear Love, was welcomed with open arms, and they fixed the cut perfectly so that I was happy again.
