So, I am bad with my hair. I often go months without getting it cut. I am a model bad client. However, Timothy took me under his wing and showed me how awesome my hair could look with a little guidance and love! I have super thick, unruly, curly hair (which is probably why I don't get it cut often -- no one knows how to handle it) however, the cut Timothy gave me was EXACTLY what I wanted. He was able to make it look healthy and happy without sacrificing too much length. Just as a great extra, he also taught me some nifty hair curling techniques that have cut my daily styling time in half. I'm so incredibly happy with the cut I received, I will be going back (and often)! I would also have no qualms about recommending Timothy or any of the Salon Red staff to any of my friends. You know when you're in a salon, and they've just finished your cut and style, and your hair looks like a thousand bucks, but when you go home and take a shower, you realize it was a bad cut disguised by good styling? That's what happened to me. I got my hair cut at Salon Red and gave the stylist room for some creativity. I just asked that the length be taken up by 3 inches at most but the cut was their choice. I was told I would be getting long layers, which is great because that's my go-to cut. I thought this was a "no-brainer" cut, but lo and behold, my layers were horrendously choppy. The length of the longest layer was fine, but my shortest layers were way too short. On top of that, the layers did not blend well at all, so it looked like I had one super short layer and one super long layer. The cut was also lopsided with much of the choppiness on only one side of my head. It looked pretty darn bad and I ended up trimming my longest layers by an inch or so to make the length differences between the short and long layers less obvious. The problem, I think, is that the stylist was not accustomed to cutting my hair texture. I have very typical Asian hair - very, very straight. It looks easy to cut (and is very easy to style), but my hair is NOT forgiving at all and WILL show mistakes. I think I would have better luck at another salon with experience cutting my hair type. But I can't even think about that right now. I'm just going to focus on growing my locks back to their initial glory. Overall, I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because the products they used are quality products and people were friendly. read more

Let me tell you how amazing Bonnie is! This woman has saved me during two big moments in my life. #1) A few months ago, I was going to have a major back surgery that would leave me unable to take care of my very long hair for awhile. I figured Dutch/festival braids would be best, so I asked the internet and Bonnie was highly recommended, so I made an appt. I'm usually somewhat awkward when meeting new people, but Bonnie immediately made me feel like we were long lost sisters. It doesn't take long to braid hair, so I was bummed when it was over because I just wanted to stay and chat more! Three weeks after surgery, I took out my braids. Not a single tangle. The braids were so good that they honestly could have stayed in for a couple more weeks at least. **I had such a great experience that I decided that Salon Red would be where I go for all my hair needs.** #2) My wedding is coming up and my pandemic roots are out of control! I scoured the Salon Red IG to see if it had any examples of Bonnie's blonde work. It didn't which made me very sad, but I found someone who did have some blonde work featured and made an appointment. What I received in that appointment was not close to what I had requested and I was feeling very bummed about it, especially with my wedding rapidly approaching. After much internal debate, I contacted Salon Red via FB. I hate complaining, especially when it comes to receiving a skilled service. The person I talked to was so kind that they didn't once make my awkward ass feel bad for bringing this to their attention. This person moved mountains to make it right for me. I'm now booked with a level 5 stylist to fix what I previously received. The customer service was so good that I had to ask their name. Imagine my surprise when I find out that it was BONNIE helping me all along!! She has come through for me twice during major events in my life and I am forever grateful for that. I have no doubt that my hair will be exactly what I wanted after the correction by the level 5 stylist. Not only that, I found out that Bonnie does indeed have blonde experience. She remembers how I like my hair cut, that I like a bit of length at the nape, and to cut it into a smallish question mark shape since my skull is a bit misshapen. I hate that I have to have an optical illusion, but she gets it and is fantastic. She remembers and mentions "you can't do Tea Tree" (I'm allergic) although I would always bring it up if she didn't. Only giving two stars because my hair cut with Bonnie was great. Love the length and she really took my picture into account and knew what i wanted. Dana on the other hand left me with yellow ish blonde hair and not anything like the pictures I showed which i figured would be easy for a professional. I attached pictures of my hair before, the pictures that I showed her of what i wanted, and the final result and there's obviously a big difference. It would be one thing to not give me what i asked for and make it fully blonde instead but to also do a bad job and leave my hair many different colors with very harsh lines is another thing. I have work to go to and somewhere to go this weekend and now I don't even know if I want to leave the house. If I knew I was going to be paying over $300 to leave the salon looking worse than when I came in, I would have just stayed home. I've tried to look at the bright side and convince myself it's not that bad but I would be lying. I truly am very disappointed. At the end she asked what I thought and I very clearly stated that it was much blonder than i had anticipated to which she replied that she could just tone it darker. She brought someone over to look at a picture of how I wanted it and she said it looked even lighter than what I already had so I just gave up and went home. Not to mention I had healthy mostly virgin hair and this was my first time getting my hair professionally colored. For 3 years I opted to grow my hair our, long mermaid locks seemed like the 'it' thing to do so I also bleached and colored it bright blue. While I looked oceantastic (well, more like a sad anime character towards the end) this really REALLY destroyed my hair's quality - it was lifeless and frizzy and always ALWAYS tangled. I needed change. Enter Stephanie, a hair stylist I found via a local facebook group. I connected with her and schedule a hair consultation, nervous on a few different levels in terms of hair and finances. But fear was unplaced, talking with this woman was a dream. She understood exactly what I wanted and the look I was going for, I set an appointment before leaving the consultation - I was ready. Queue hair day, Stephanie continued to be an absolute dream. She explained what she was doing while she worked and made comfortable no stress conversation. Solid tips and tricks to managing my hair was given, as well as a product list and a few substitutions in case I couldn't find a certain thing/preferred another thing. The style she did was complete perfection, a stunning color and cut even better than I'd wanted. As for the salon itself, I have no complaints. The rest of the staff seemed really awesome, the atmosphere was hip and relaxed, and pink lemonade was available! I've never written a negative review but I feel others should be warned -- the stylist we had for my teen age daughter absolutely butchered her hair. She came in for a trim-- with thick curly hair well below her waist. I spoke to the stylist, asked him to condition and trim 2", no straightening her beautiful curls. Instead he chopped and layered at will-- so she has a short mushroom cloud of hair above a longer layer--- a full 8-12 inches gone. I have no words to describe the upset-- Not only did he not follow our wishes of a simple trim, what he has done is beyond words--this will take a year to undo-- I have tried to reach a manager to no avail. read more

This was probably my fifth time going to this place (idk why I keep giving them chances) and I feel like every time I visit my experience just keeps getting worse. The first time I went for a cut and was overcharged for a trim even though I confirmed the price before setting up an appointment. I came again for a cut and dye because I had a coupon and while they didn't overcharge this time, the job was extremely mediocre given the price point and I've experienced better at my local salon back home for a cheaper price. I went a couple more times again for a cut and tone (since I had coupons and this is the only salon located nearby my place for which I can easily get an appointment) and was declined my coupons. My most recent visit, however, has been hands down the worst one and has made me swear off this place forever. I went in for a toning treatment only which usually doesn't take more than 30 minutes and is around 30$ at this place. However, the lady doing my hair was extremely slow compared to my previous visits. From my previous couple experiences with getting my hair toned at this place, I have always gotten my hair blow dried at no charge just so I can see the hair color. No styling, just a simple blow dry job. This lady, however, decided to give me a full blow out without me even consenting to it and ended up charging me for it as well. When I tried to argue that I only came in for a toning treatment, they wouldn't listen and I ended up paying $100 to get a horrible blow out which I didn't even want and a subpar toning treatment which I could've done myself at home. Overall, unless you are up for hidden prices and overcharges, and an extremely unprofessional hair job, I do not recommend this place. read more

This is more of a review from a customer service perspective than a review of how well they do hair. I had an appointment that was supposed to last 2.5 hours with Amber. She was running half an hour late. I did overhear Amber explain to the receptionist that she'd need to stay late tonight and to back up her next appointment. No one came up to tell me what was going on or apologize that they were running behind schedule as I waited. When I sat down finally, no apology for running behind schedule. When I told her what I wanted done (Caramel balayage on dark brown hair, exactly what I'd booked the appointment for) she said she didn't have time despite me having a 2.5 hour appointment (that she'd already eaten into by half an hour). honestly what a waste of people's time. I am now in a rush to find a last minute hair stylist to help for a special occasion. ideally, when a place is running behind, they call or text to let a customer know to be respectful of their time. Additionally, from What Amber said, it sounds like balayage on brown hair could need a wide range of time depending on the person's hair. It would be nice to interact with a hair stylist / business that understood that and also respected people's schedules enough to give them a call and discuss the appointment ahead of time. read more

I came in last week for color and cut with jessica. Everything was very organized and safe. You could tell that they are following specific guidelines that have been given to them for keeping the salon safe for its employees and clients. When you arrive, you stay in your car and your stylist comes out to take your temperature and provide a mask before you enter the salon. You also fill out a short questionnaire. Upon entering, you get some hand sanitizer from the table by the door and go straight to your stylist's station. After your service is complete, the station is cleaned and sanitized for the next client. I've been coming to salon red for years and a Jessica is usually working on 2 or 3 clients at once. Now each stylist only works with one client at a time, and appointments are made in such a way that there aren't too many people in the salon at once. It was a great experience and I felt very safe and cared for. read more

I went to another salon and the stylist completely botched my balayage and refused to fix it 4 days before a wedding and I'm the maid of honor. YIKES! So I called Salon Red with an SOS and they were able to schedule me for a consultation that day! I ended up seeing Becks and she worked some serious magic and cleaned up my balayage, achieving what I had wanted from the start. The service was amazing, and she was extremely professional and diligent about sanitizing everything as she went. The owner Jessica was also very friendly and placed me with Becks, saying she is the balayage master. It's TRUE! I like this salon a lot. The location is great, the staff is friendly, and even the shampoo bowls are kind of comfortable. So there's three stars right there. However, I was consistently unhappy with the colorist I saw there, Amy Jones. I had three appointments with her, and not once did she do what I asked her to do with my hair. I didn't ask for anything complicated or very different from what I started with, and on two occasions I took the time to come in for a consultation to make sure we were clear about what I wanted. Had she told me that she couldn't do it, or that it would be bad for my hair, or suggested something different, I would have been okay with that. But she told me that she would do what I asked, and then did something very different. Then, when I complained that my hair was too dark/too red/not what I wanted, she paraded me outside with a hand mirror so I could see how it looked out there. It still wasn't what I asked for. But whether it looked better outside is moot because I don't go to work, hang out with friends, or go on dates outside. Then she would make excuses, like how she didn't expect the ends of my hair to hold so much color, or how she didn't want to lighten it (as we discussed during the consultation) because it would damage my hair. So then when I was still not happy with it, she tried to sell me a $20 bottle of shampoo that I didn't need in hopes that I could fade the color a little bit at home. I'm sure the other stylists are great but I can't recommend Amy at all. read more

Megan at Van Michael in Buckhead, it isn't you, it's me (well, and that aforementioned Scoutmob discount and my desire to avoid a drive to Buckhead). When I called to make my appointment, I was given several appointment options on the days I requested. I selected a very convenient after work appointment; something I've never really indulged in at my regular salon given its distance from my Decatur home. My assigned stylist, Carla, greeted me within minutes of my arrival. I was worried that things would be awkward, given this was our first date. But she listened to what I was looking for in a style, made suggestions for things that might work better, and the conversation (hair and non-hair alike) flowed easily. She's funny and professional all at the same time. The end result? A haircut that I love and compliments from others galore. Bravo, Carla! My only complaint was that it was sweltering hot in Salon Red. In all fairness, it was 99 degrees outside that day and I know that blow dryers and other hair equipment generate a lot of heat. But I sweated like I do after running in the heat; an amount of sweat I don't think is acceptable for any indoor situation. Crank up the AC, ya'll, and I'll see you again soon! read more

Pretty good experience here. The receptionist was great when I was setting everything up. Went in for a total transformation and they got it 85% right. Timothy did my cut and was awesome. Went from long hair to a long pixie. He's very easy to talk to and works with you. He's the most experienced stylist at the shop and you'll pay for it, but if you want a drastic cut you can trust him. The colorist I had, Irene, was good, but I just think her and I had two different interpretations of the picture I showed her. My hair came out way darker than what I had wanted. The color was rich and pretty, but just not what I wanted. After hours at the salon, staying to fix it seemed exhausting. It's growing on me. Looking forward to next color session and going back a little lighter. Next time I will bring in several pictures, and hit on key words better. Was a good learning experience. read more

I went to salon red today and had a GREAT experience. When I got there and met my stylist, Alana, I showed her a picture of the haircut I wanted. Of course, I didn't expect my hair to look exactly like the picture, because the picture was of a celebrity with AMAZING hair, but I hoped for the best. However, I left the salon with hair JUST LIKE the celeb and I felt like a movie star! I loved the atmosphere of the salon, and everyone I talked to was really friendly. The haircuts look good, but their tipping system is shystie. If you plan on using a card, you won't be able to tip when paying for the cut itself. I was told that since they do not want to get taxed on tips, they will only accept cash or personal checks for tips. I wasn't prepared for this, and had to use their off-brand ATM machine, service fee and all. The only bills dispensed are those divisible by 10. Great experience here! Though not my home salon (I'm a regular at Grow, in Decatur) I needed some quick hair care before an event on Saturday. I called on Friday morning and was able to get in for a color with Amy and a cut with Ashley for the following afternoon. I'm pretty low maintenance when it comes to my hair, so when Amy suggested we put in some highlights I was a little apprehensive. But since I mostly color my own hair, it's kinda drab and one toned so I decided I would just go for it. I'm so glad I did. It looks great! And they are very subtle, so it's not like HIGHLIGHTS! and it's something I don't have to keep track of all the time. Good call. I guess that's why she's the professional hair lady and I'm not... I only came to Salon Red once, so take my review with a grain of salt if you'd like. My usual stylist at another salon was booked so I called Salon Red and was able to get an appointment. I'm usually very laid-back about how my hair is cut but I decided to be specific for this appointment because I had never been there before. I brought multiple photos and had a full conversation with the stylist about how I wanted my hair cut. She understood and it seemed like we were on the same page. The stylist ended up cutting my hair in a different style and about 2 inches shorter than I asked for. I didn't realize how short it was until it was already too late. I was really frustrated by this experience because it was not a cheap haircut! At the time, I thought that maybe it would look alright once I got home and could wash and style it myself. That didn't happen. I understand having a miscommunication, but she never asked me for clarification or apologized or anything! When I returned to my normal stylist, she commented that the cut was very uneven. It's all good now- hair grows- but I wanted to share my experience in case it would be helpful to others deciding whether to go here. read more

I had only ever been to the Decatur location but I prefer this one. It is bigger but still has a cozy feel. It is not cold and overly utilitarian like most salons. I've always been a whatever is cheapest haircut guy but you definitely get what you pay for in that situation. As I have gotten older and grumpier I suppose I value not having to tell the haircutter exactly what I want. They went to school for hair while I majored in English. I think they should know better than I what would look good and how to describe it. Salon Red has those type of people. And sometimes you get lucky and find a great deal in the process. Like last week when they posted on their facebook that Morgan was doing cuts for 50% off. I called and they were able to get me in about 45 minutes later. Morgan was very personable and easy to work with. Told her I didn't really feal like making choices and to not make me look like a dork, I wasn't expecting to get a haircut that day so I had taken an anxiety pill shortly before. I likely would have been pleased with anything in my relaxed state of mind but she actually succeeded in making me not look like a dork and the cut was only 17.50. Success read more

Recently moved to Atlanta from Seattle & found Salon Red and decided to give it a try. I'm kind of a 'get a cut when I feel like it kinda gal' - hate to plan, don't book 8 weeks ahead, & when I want a cut, I want a cut. Well thanks to fate, I found Alana at Salon Red in Candler Park. My life has changed for the better. I will now hold out for only her. Truly - she is the best stylist I have ever gone to (and that is a lot). What I love about her, is that she LISTENS - and she KNOWS hair. My first visit, she took the time to listen to my hair history, what I liked, what I didn't like and what my 'deal breakers' were. All the while she was assessing my not-quite-straight/not-quite-wavy hair. The she worked her magic - taking my wants/needs into consideration while working with reality of what I have to work with. The results are fantastic - the best cut EVER, that looks great whether I want to spend 20 minutes styling it or 20 seconds to wash&wear. Every cut I've gotten from her has been like this - and even though I might go a few months between cuts, she remembers me, my hair & what I like/dislike. fantastic. The salon itself is good, nice & low key - great products, but no heavy handed product push. Equally comfortable for a hipster or vandrivin' mom. Highly recommend Salon Red & Alana in particular, who is the shining star in my eyes. read more
