Not sure why this place gets so many great reviews. My experience there was super underwhelming.
It was my first post-pandemic haircut and it was a big splurge for me but because of the great reviews and the proximity to my house I decided to give this place a try.
Jordy was listed as a curly hair stylist and her rates were 120.00 for two hours.
I booked an appointment in the late afternoon and because it was a Friday in Little 5 Points, and because the salon has no parking I made sure to get there in plenty of time. I got there a few minutes before my appointment at 5:00.
There was no one there except another stylist and her client. They didn't acknowledge me at all, which was odd, but it's a chair rental salon so there's no other staff. My first impression was how cold and unwelcoming the vibe was. It's a big cavernous space with no warmth. Literally. The AC was blasting even though the front doors were wide open.
Five o'clock came and went, and I sat there dumbly waiting for ten more minutes. Finally, Jordy came out from the back and asked me if I was her 5:00 appointment. She performed a very cursory consultation and said she would shape up my hair and use a razor, which was what I wanted. I was really excited about it.
She took me over to the shampoo chair and that's when thing started to go sideways.
She barely touched my head, just ran some water over it and lifted strands of my hair and dropped them. No scalp massage, no vigorous shampooing, no explanation of the products she was using, or rather product because I'm pretty sure she didn't apply conditioner at all. She mumbled something about the salon having a new product line that she was still learning about but didn't say much else about it.
What she did say plenty about was herself. I learned she'd just had a birthday, how old she was, where she was born, where she lived, where her parents met, what movies she liked and how much weed she smokes ( a lot ). In my experience, hairstylists are a chatty bunch, so no surprise there, but talking about how much weed you smoke with a first time client is questionable, professionally.
She asked if I wanted my hair diffused or air dried. I said I always let it air dry. So, she stopped and said what do think? She had barely cut anything. I told her it was fine to take off more. The entire time she was spraying my hair with a water mister. That's the only thing she used. I thought she would add some styling products at some point because curly hair needs product to keep it from frizzing, but no. She kept spraying and trimming lightly then said okay. She was done. My hair was still really wet when she handed me the mirror and spun the chair around so I could look at it. It wasn't all that different from what I could see but it seemed a little shorter and I thought it would be more apparent once it dried. But no. Sadly, when it dried it looked like a horrible, frizzy fight wig. By then it was an hour after I had left. I was meeting a friend for dinner and didn't have time to mitigate the horror. Jordy spent about 45 minutes on my hair, charged me her rate for two hours and on top of that I foolishly tipped her 20%. I have no idea what weed costs these days but I imagine she was probably able to score enough to tide her over for the weekend with that amount of money.
I mentioned my experience to a friend and she told me that she had never had a good experience at Commoner, with any of the stylists. She said that her sweet boyfriend had gotten her a very generous gift card from there that she was excited about but after her service she went home and cried because she felt he had wasted his money on such a subpar service. She also told me that she had witnessed another egregious lapse in service there the only other time she went. A client showed up to have her hair done for her wedding and the stylist never showed up!
Anyway, I reached out to Jordy a few days later and told her how unhappy I was with her service. No surprise but I got no response. She obviously doesn't care about client retention or professionalism. read more
