This place is down past McDougal and while walking it doesn't seem like a good area but keep walking a bit further away from Ouellette street. Pupusas with bean, cheese and chicharron, would have liked some other meat or veggie options. We were desperate to find a place open and that popped up for us on Yelp as the internet wasn't working well over the border on Yelp. We both ended up ordering shredded chicken tacos, my husband wanted grilled chicken tacos but it wasn't available. The tacos were okay, filled with lots of shredded chicken. The rice is super plain and bland, but the refried beans are not bad at all. The bartender was our waitress, friendly person. Wasn't busy so she was doing it all. The salsa is fresh and tasty. The chips aren't bad but extreme crunchy, almost too much that it feels rock hard. The only hot sauce on the table is the Tapatio hot sauce. The bill total was C$35.04. They accept USD but it's on par, they won't charge based on the exchange rate which is C$1.31 for every $1USD today. They only accept cash or debit here!

a plate of rice and meat

worst experience ever, I ordered a Carne Asada I told them well done, and the meat was raw the chips I ordered looked like they'ved had them there for more than a week and I was over charged. Also the waiter was not nice at all. It was a waist of money. I regret ever stepping there. There is a Salvadorean restaurant down the street, now they serve very good Carne Asada and the service there is great.a

Gross burnt pupusas and the waitress name was Rachel or something, bigger woman who made us feel awkward about not tipping her when she gave us our change back, she said "is this for me" when we were putting our change away, and her service was so bad she rarely ever came around maybe once . I'm very dissatisfied in this restaurant, most likely not going back.

Came here with a friend when we were feeling mexican. We were a little surprised when no one was there at dinner time, but I guess we were a bit early. By the time we left, every seat in the house was full. The waiter was really energetic and knowledgable. He gave us many suggestions and told us about the authentic food, and even told us about a Groupon which saved us some money! The food was amazing. My favourite were the nachos.

Wow. Was so looking forward to a nice pupusa to take the edge of a muggy afternoon. In short, I never got the chance because the dude working here felt his phone call was more important than the customer in front of him. I politely waited, then walked to the front door and checked the opening hours to confirm and respectfully asked if he was closed. He paused his conversation to say "just a minute" ... Huh?? I did give him the benefit of the doubt, though I didn't hear anything on his end of the call that warranted making a customer wait. I waited a while longer then left. What an utter disappointment. These guys have a Groupon right now and I was the designated taster for my group of friends to see if it was worth buying. Now we'll never know. Sad.

Left to right. Carnitas, spicy chicken, and barbacoa tacos on soft corn tortillas!

I came here for lunch! I was planning to come here during Eat Your City week but it fell through so here I am! Customer service was very friendly and prompt. I was not rushed. Water was given and after my order, my waitress came back with a basket of nachos and salsa. Nachos are generic in taste and I personally don't like their salsa. It's pretty watery, I'd say like 80%. There's not much flavour. I was the only customer so food was prompt which was nice! I had three individual tacos each with different meats. I had the carnitas (pulled pork), spicy chicken, and barbacoa (pulled beef). It's served with salsa, salsa verde (my preference), and a lime! A great thing about their tacos is that it's served on warm, doubled soft corn tortillas and topped with red onions and cilantro. No unnecessary cheese! (I don't like cheese) I'd rank them from eh to good as follows: pork, chicken, beef. The carnitas was very dry for me so I poured on salsa verde. The chicken did a little better but it still needed salsa verde. The barbacoa was delicious! Flavourful and did not need any sauces! I am pleased that this meal had me full! I'd definitely come back to try their barbacoa tacos again! I loooove their doubled soft corn tortillas!

    Chile Relleno

Ordered the Chile Relleno for dinner. Waitress warned me that it is hard for the chef to control the spiciness of the pepper. It had some heat to it, but each table has its own bottle of hot sauce to make things right. Planting could use some work. Pepper + pull pork + cheese + rice has a great texture. Fried beans were a bit salty. The portion was huge. Overall, it was delicious. Salsa & chips are authentic. The spice was just right. Waitress was friendly. Atmosphere was pleasant. I'll be back to try a different dish.

Nacho appetizer with gucamole. Plus margaritas :)

This is me and my boyfriends favorite spot ! We go at least once every couple months and have tried a variety of things and have not had one problem yet. Very laid back atmosphere. Perfect for drinking, on weekends they have events, or good for a date night even. The portions are huge, has lots of flavor, and at an awesome price! My favourite is the burrito platter as it has tons of flavor. They specialize in pupusas, and the flaming cheese dish was good as an appetizer as well. Sometimes the margaritas are a hit and miss dependent on who makes them. Overall, great food, atmosphere, and prices. The only thing I would suggest working on is the enthusiasm in the restaurant owner. We are regulars and hardly ever get greeted. Besides that awesome homemade meal place :)

We went to La Cuscatleca over the weekend after trying Salvadoran food from a place in Ann Arbor…read morethe previous day. I didn't really like the food there so I was a bit confused whether it was that place in particular, or if I didn't like Salvadoran tamales and pupusas in general. I figured going to La Cuscatleca would help settle the question. La Cuscatleca is one of those marketplace/restaurant combos so common around SW Detroit and Dearborn. In the front is the register where you can pick up prepared drinks and tamales. The left half of the store is dedicated to selling Salvadoran sundries and food items. A bunch of ingredients and spices I have never seen before are stuffed into hand labeled bags and adorn the multiple shelves. The grocery area is quite crowded, with only maybe 2.5 feet in between each aisle. The restaurant order window and kitchen is in the rear, and the right half of the store is the eating area with a couple of tables. Ordering is pretty easy but requires you to know at least a little bit of Spanish - you place the order at the window, then find a seat and they'll bring the food out for you. After you finish, you'll get a handwritten bill, which you take up to the front register to pay. Again, just be aware that the people here speak little to no English. Pupusas ($3.50 each) - We tried three on the menu: revueltas, loroco, and chipilin. I think we screwed up the order with our one month Duolingo level Spanish because we weren't brought any salsa or curtido on the side. Still, these pupusas were super rich, completely stuffed to the brim with cheese and the other ingredients, with the cheese actually spilling out the sides and caramelizing a bit on the griddle. The salsa and curtido could have helped a bit to cut through some of the richness, but I think the pupusas in general are top quality. The revueltas is the most familiar with some nice refried beans spread on the interior. I wonder what the difference between the revueltas and the frijol queso is? (5/5) The loroco adds a very nice mild vegetal quality - the are very generous with the filling of cheese and whole loroco buds so you can taste and appreciate the flavor. This was my favorite of the three. (5/5) The chipilin is really, really pungent. It's kind of like spinach with the mouthfeel, but way more pungent in flavor. It's tender and not stringy or tough at all, but it's just a little too pungent for me. (4/5) Tamales ($3.33 each) - We got one puerco, one pollo, one pisque. These are wrapped in foil, then a layer of banana leaf, and finally the filling. As with a typical Salvadoran tamale, these are soft and tender masa, almost like a custard texture. The masa is an absolute flavor bomb - it's meaty, savory, full of umami. For the pisque, there's refried beans added only in the center. The beans are pretty dark looking for refried beans and has a bit of bitterness/acridity to it like it has burned bits mixed in. I'm not sure if it really was burned or it should taste like this. If it didn't have the burned taste, this would be more of a 4/5, but as it stands, it's a (1/5). The pollo has some tender potato and green pepper mixed in and the chicken maintains moisture well (4/5). The puerco has pressure cooked pork mixed in. They include the rib bones and cartilage, giving an unpleasing texture on the interior, but overall the meat portion is pretty tender and juicy (3/5). Atol de Elote ($4.50) - Woah, this is one seriously thick and rich drink. It's like drinking condensed milk mixed with corn and cinnamon. Or like a drinkable pudding or custard. Super sweet and super filling. It's served warm, so it seems great for a cold day (4/5). Bathrooms: One single room behind the eating area. La Cuscatleca is very popular with the local Salvadoran community for good reason. The pupusas in particular are hand made fresh and are absolutely delicious. While we were there, we saw several other parties all enjoying large bowls of soups and stews. We'll definitely have to come back to try those dishes and some of the other authentic specialties.

I'm OUTDONE. I don't know what the ambiance is like but, I'm guessing the service is pure BASURA…read moreFROM A PLACE that calls this a tamale. It's grease and slop in a banana leaf. I almost puked looking at it alone. Idk if it's because we're Afro Latina or what but, it's disrespectful to serve this to ANYONE. I HAVEN'T ever in my life felt this bad about food. STEER Clear. I want to call the health department.
