I thought this was a decent place. Not incredibly memorable. But, much better than other places I have been in Tulsa. Our service was spot on (I think the guys name is aaron or darrin?). We went on a Saturday night at 630 and had no problem getting a seat. There's a chips and salsa guy who kept us well stocked. If you ask they do have a spicy salsa they can bring. I ate the green chicken enchiladas. They were creamy and mild in flavor. I was impressed on how large the pieces of chicken were. I had grilled veggies instead of rice and they were awesome! Also, had some Bracho beans. The server said they use beer when cooking them. After my meal I had an order of Sopapillas. They were exactly as I wanted; puffy, warm, served with powdered sugar, a touch of cinnamon, and honey on the side. read more

I'm not sure why this place isn't rated higher. I see some of the previous gripes, but that was not my experience. I went towards closing time on a Friday night. I was promptly greeted and seated. The salsa was chunky and fresh; the warm roasted pepper salsa was spicy and delicious. The side of guacamole was also quite good--included chunks of pico. My verde carnita enchiladas were fresh, piping hot, and delicious. The side of beans were very good--cooked with chunks of ham with pico on top. Overall, it was an outstanding meal. As good as it gets with casual Mexican dining. Also, my server was very friendly and attentive. I had a great meal here. Highly recommended. read more

Went here for lunch today. Made the mistake of ordering the Spinach enchilada. Nasty! Frozen chopped Spinach rolled in a Tortilla and queso sauce poured on top. This is Mexican food? Note to chef- enchiladas get baked in an oven with real cheese on top. If you don't have actual fresh spinach then just tell the customer you don't have that today. To add insult to my experience, when I was ready to pay I laid the bill with my credit card on it up on the edge of the bar in front of me but the poor bar tender was running back and forth to the kitchen. Meanwhile, the blowhard manager is standing a couple of stools away regaling some other customers about how much he hates Yelp but could not be bothered to take a couple steps in my direction to cash me out. My first mistake was not looking at Yelp Before I walked into this place. The other reviews are underwhelming and I would have gone across the street to The Tavern. read more

This review was made during the COVID-19 pandemic. I thought Mexicali did a great job overall. It was just me and my friend visiting Tulsa for the first time. We stopped here for some food, and our server was Torei, who did a 5/5 job. The interior design of the restaurant had a Gastropub feel, metalwork chairs with a cushion, spread out tables to give guests distance from others. Everyone was wearing a mask. We were taken to a table immediately when we walked through the door, and Torei greeted us within the first two minutes grabbing our drinks. Now this is really the only reason I struggled to not give the experience a 5/5, everything was perfect but the margarita was brutal. Now I could just be a snob cause I order margaritas everywhere I go, and I love tequila based cocktails. But it just tasted of sour mix, peach, way too much sugar, and barely any lime juice and tequila. I'm not saying it was under poured, but I should be able to taste the main two ingredients. We were given complimentary chips and salsa as does everyone, and it was very good. It's always a nice sign when a place has good complimentary snacks to start with. The foreshadowing proved accurate because the tacos we ordered were fantastic. All in all, we left shortly after. And I would like to thank Torei once again, she did a great job and made sure to have all of her tables happy while we dined in her section. Looking forward to coming back! read more

Good ole reliable Mexicali. While I can tell you from experience that it is nowhere near the best Mexican restaurant in Tulsa, it is a decent place to grab lunch if you are stuck downtown. The food is fairly good and the prices are not too outrageous. The servers try hard and that's what is important. One time I had a waitress that was sweating profusely. She handed me a straw for my drink and the wrapper was soaking wet!!! I'm not sure if it was sweat or water but the straw DID NOT get used. Hah read more

I honestly thought that this restaurant was going to be good because of the set up. It's very authentic when you walk it. Reminds me of México so I figured it was going to be top notch I was obviously wrong. Our waitress was very nice and welcoming! The chips and salsa were good. The shrimp tacos with the mango pico was disgusting and so was my drink (michelada) it was super spicy! Like spicy hot ! I wouldn't give that to my worst enemy. It was just gross. I just wish the food was better and the micheladas need work ! This restaurant shouldn't be called Mexi Cali there is nothing Mexican about it and Cali? California has high standers for food. The Wet Burrito was good. Also, get the Horny Margarita! It's sweet but not too sweet, sweet enough that you can taste the liquor that much. Still makes you feel good. The burrito melts in your mouth, with the white queso, beef, & refried beans. Topped with cilantro & enchilada gravy. Comes with rice & beans. Stuffed me! I added chipotle to it, which added more flavor & made it more enjoyable. They have a pretty good lunch menu. read more

I've been eating here for years out of convenience. The close proximity to the BOK, Cain's Ballroom, and The Brady Theater make it a great place to stop and get a bite to eat before a show. The food is Mediocre, not bad. The service is fast and the prices are very reasonable. They will get you in and out in 45 min or less usually. I am going back for another concert in May, I will be looking forward to another meal here. As it has become tradition. read more

We have eaten here for years, and was surprised to read so many negative reviews because we have always enjoyed our meals. Good chips and salsa, good margaritas, good Tex Mex. it's kind of hard to mess up fajitas, and they have always been a good choice. Our wait staff has always been attentive and fun. They used to have fried ice cream, but no more, which is a bummer. A little pricier than other (not downtown) Mexican restaurants, but downtown location is key. They have an attendant in the parking lot on weekends keeping non-customers out, so even when there are concerts, you can park. Convenient to the Brady, the Cains, and Guthrie Green and good food at a decent price. read more

Mexicali Border is a place that is easy to forget. The reason it still exists is because it's across the street from the Brady Theater IMO. Went here several years back. Wasn't impressed then and still not impressed now. We were in the DT area so decided to give it another chance. Admittedly the food was above average on the first visit back, but the second was same tired food as the past and remember now why we never returned. Along with subpar food you may also receive an attitude to compliment your TV dinner style entree. The staff doesn't appear super thrilled to be here either. On another note, if someone has to wait 15 minutes for chips and salsa then they might get up and walk out. Noticed on their website they have one location left in FL and the one in Tulsa. You would think with only two locations left there would be a little more of an effort put forth to stay afloat. Also there's a huge swordfish on the wall which has nothing to do with the theme. Get Mexican food right first, then maybe move on to saltwater creatures. This place has potential and a diverse menu that is somewhat appealing, but in the end this place is nothing impressive. read more

We were looking for a place to eat on a Sunday afternoon and choices were somewhat limited in downtown Tulsa. I'm glad I didn't read the reviews before going here, otherwise we might have skipped it. Kris, our waitress greeted us promptly and with a smile. We ordered the guacamole and while it was not the best I've ever had, it was fresh and tasty. Kris really recommend the margaritas; these are usually not my drink of choice but I tried the mango one and I have to say Kris was right - it was very good! I ordered the stacked enchiladas and asked if they could be made vegetarian and I'm happy to say that was no problem. I would have liked the tortillas to be a little more crispy but the dish was tasty. Black beans were substituted for the borracho beans and the rice was very tender. Husband had the Ixtapa steak and it was plentiful and flavorful. We had a delicious and very pleasant experience here! read more

If you are going to Mexicali with a group of people save your self the trouble and just go to el guapos. After arriving early to a damn near empty restaurant so we could get food going while we waited for our friends to arrive we were hit with their "we only seat full parties" policy. After speaking to a manger and explaining why we were early, they still would not seat us and told us we'd have the same policy anywhere else we were to go in a Friday night. So we left, went on over to El quapos and were immediately seated, even without our full party being present, ya know, like a normal restaurant. So save yourself the bullshit wait for crap food. read more

She works her tail off, almost running to make sure her customers have everything they need. As busy as the restaurant was, she was very attentive and checked on me several times to see if I needed anything else. Just watching her work makes me tired. When we entered there were a lot of people dining but it didn't look like a long queue. We were told 25 minutes for our party of 2. After 30 we started to see the restaurant starting to clear out. After 40 minutes we were told there were still 4 parties ahead of use even though people waiting shorter times had been crossed off. We were told the kitchen was going as fast as they could and more than 10 tables were available. We decided to go to lone wolf where we could eat before our event. Update: Mexicali's general manager reached out to me quickly and took ownership of the issue we encountered. I plan to update after our next visit. read more

Food overall is just decent, however service is horrible. There was a problem with my husband's food and since our server never acknowledged us again until he brought our check, we asked to speak to someone else about it. Our server walked away and said "you don't have to be a d**k about it", loud enough everyone in the bar area heard it. The manager on duty did take the meal off our check but was aloof about the outburst from our server. The server, apparently upset that he didn't receive a tip, followed us out of the establishment cussing us further across the parking lot. Understanding the challenges all restaurants are dealing with in terms of staffing, cussing your customers should never be acceptable. Sad day for customer service. I was staying at the Marriott across the street while in town and craved Mexican food so I made my way over. I actually ate here twice while in town and the first time was very good with the last time being kind of disappointing. Staff was friendly both times. The second time our queso dip seemed water down with milk which was a total bummer. Also I made it clear to my waiter that I did not eat meat and still found pieces of beef in my rice/sides due to it being spilled on my plate by accident? It totally killed my appetite and was unable to finish my food. I would be open to returning at some point but still very off put by my last experience. read more

A very disappointing experience. The atmosphere is Mexican industrial space, the seating slightly uncomfortable, the table top just a slight bit tacky/ sticky and the service sub-par. The chips and salsa slightly stale, over-salted and overly spicy but at the same time watery. The rest of the food was down hill from there. In general the chicken is a better choice then the beef, again think overly hot spice but not flavor. Don't even get me started on the drinks. If you want Tex-Mex in Tulsa hit Peppers or Cancun, don't waste your $$$ here. If you don't listen, and try to eat here, after your meal you will likely be accosted by the super creepy parking lot attendant, who will hover, be intrusive, attempt to scope out what's in your car, and in general make a royal nuisance of himself until you vacate "his" lot. The store on S. Sheridan used to be a completely different experience, this one is a "No Go" in my book. read more

Ate here before the Leon Bridges concert. Shared the order of fajita combo nachos. The beef was super tender and full of flavor. Service was excellent. We were also able to park there for $10 for the concert. It was pouring down rain and that made it so much more convenient for us. I'd recommend this restaurant any day. read more

Looking for a reasonably priced margarita with your choice of many top shelf tequilas to go with your dinner? Trust me, you've come to the right place. They serve warm chips and a solidly good salsa. I would say it's a much better value than the place up the street. I've had their enchiladas and the fajitas and I would say they're comfortable to anywhere in town Their Borracha beans are the BOMB! As I always do when I get food from Mexicali, I'm walking away from the experience saying "never again". Apparently, like the pain of childbirth, I eventually forget the suffering and I try again. And I'm disappointed again. Unfortunately, I've never left Mexicali really thrilled with the experience. "Adequate" is really the best review I've ever had for it. Tonight I ordered takeout, with high hopes. I ordered the chicken fajita nachos. I was assuming this involved cooked peppers and onions and sauces and toppings. All it is is tortilla chips with refried beans, chunks of cold chicken and cheese. I was definitely expecting more. I ordered the nachos, and a small order of white queso. My bill was over $18, and the food was a huge disappointment. The tragedy of this, is that there are so many better more reasonably priced Mexican restaurants in Tulsa. The only thing Mexicali has going for it is it's location in the Brady district. And some very nice employees. But in terms of food and value it is never a really good choice. So disappointed!!!! Horrible parking, rude staff and the manager was very unprofessional. Makes me very sad to say but I will not be back and I will not ever recommend to my friends. I would be embarrassed to do so and they be treated the way we were at the front door. There are too many more options downtown. We were standing in the parking lot at the front door, keep in mind it was crowded and and not room to stand right inside... we were spoken to so rudely and berated because our entire party was not physically in the building. Rating given simply because of really stupid seating policies. Refuse to sit you till your entire party shows up (7 out of 8 of us were here), even though we were ready to order for all 8 people. Refuse to allow you to order your appetizers etc while you wait as well. I'd love to be able to talk about the food. .. but at this point, it's just not going to happen. UPDATE: Manager reached out apologising for the experience, offering internal rules etc. for rationale. Kudos for the straight up apologies and the 'if you come back, we will try to make sure you have a better experience' - I really do appreciate that, and I may take them up on it. However, although I understand the need for rules to maximise efficiency, if not properly set in place, they can negatively impact customer experience, as it did for me. Strictly speaking, as a customer, I am really not at all concerned with a venue's internal efficiencies, with what makes it tick, with it's profit margins or anything. All I care about, as a customer, is a good experience, great food and good prices. And unfortunately, in this case, the venue did not deliver. read more
