Please don't get catfished like we did! The pictures look amazing but when you get your food you are paying for 50 dollars and barely getting any beans or rice. The service was okay just confused why it took so long to get drinks, refills. Many times we couldn't get refills or find our waitress for the check. If you like, and you are trying to find authentic Mexican food, this is your place! Flavors are magnificent. Puerto Verde was wonderful a little on spicy side, but I knew what I was ordering. Chili Riano's and fajitas are delicious. That was what we ordered at our table and I had a taste of all of it. Ha service was very tentative and helpful. The ambience is typical authentic Mexican joint which I would describe as friendly, a lot of conversations going on a lot of laughing going on you might get to hear somebody be serenaded with a happy birthday mariachi style rhythm they appeared to have a pretty good bar selection saw a lot of red beer being drank and a few margaritas and even a birthday shot of tequila. So I search Mexican restaurants for a quick-pull-off-the-Hwy lunch in my Google Maps and found this place very conveniently off the side at I44. I pulled in about 11:50 on a Sunday and the place was packed. From the outside it doesn't look like very much but on the inside the place is really nice everything is very clean and new. They brought chips and salsa and I requested Salsa verde and it was very good. I ordered Chile Rellenos. Which was the best I've ever had and it was huge. They have a wide range of authentic Mexican selections, but don't come here looking for crispy ground beef tacos. I always get the tacos with homemade tortillas - usually chicken but sometimes will have a pork one too. Tacos come with incredible grilled onions, radishes, fresh lime, and a roasted jalapeño. Homemade salsas as well as several bottled choices give everyone a choice. As mentioned before, the service is great - they serve beer and other authentic Mexican beverages too. Very Authentic Mexican Food We enjoyed the meal, but it did not stand out as much more than average for us. The meal starts with chips that were probably fried in the restaurant. They weren't very fresh and crisp. The salsa is served in very small cups. You will need to ask for more. We had the Mole Enchiladas Chicken and the Carne Asada. I wanted to try their Consome which was listed on the menu as a special that was only available on Saturday and Sunday. But, the waitress said they didn't have any this weekend. The mole on the enchiladas was very distinct. It had strong chocolate and cinnamon flavors. They were generous with four chicken filled enchiladas. I did not care for at all. My wife enjoyed them. The carne asada was very typical. Two large very thinly sliced steaks that had been char grilled. It came with beans, rice, a grilled onion, pico de gallo and a chili toreado! They serve two bottles of some type of refrigerated sauce with the meal. I am not sure what each was made of, but there both good. I'm guessing that it was some type of sour cream based sauce with combinations of cilantro, tomatillo, avocado and peppers. Folks that are knowledgeable of traditional Mexican food probably know what they are. It was a hot day; the restaurant was crowded when we got there. As a result the air conditioner was struggling to keep up. The wait for the food was short. The service overall was average. This restaurant seems to have strong following of customers that prefer true authentic Mexican food. I have driven by Molcajetes at different hours of the day and they always have several cars out front. At meal time the parking lot is packed! read more
