I have a partiality for, mom and pop Mexican restaurants operated in "hole in the wall" venues. They are especially easy to discover in Oklahoma. The best part is sampling the variations of common Mexican dishes prepared "home style" by the owners. And here we have" La Flama." The interior and furnishings at La Flama are well worn. The service is fast and friendly. The chips had been under the heat lamp for way too many hours, the salsa very fresh and delicious. Our meals were the Grilled Chicken Enchiladas and the San Lucas Chicken. Both were unique presentations. The enchiladas were corn tortillas dipped in red sauce filled with a very small amount of chopped grilled chicken, folded, with a liberal amount of more chopped grilled chicken on top. The San Lucas Chicken, was a thin chicken breast with a mild chipotle sauce, covered with melted mozzarella cheese, and a bonus of three grilled shrimp. Both meals were freshly prepared, mildly seasoned. Californicated Mexican food, it is not. Not quite what I would call OkieMex either. My best guess is home style, traditional authentic Mexican food. I make this clarification up front so, if you are expecting OkieMex you may be disappointed. If you don't mind food biased more toward traditional Mexican, give it a try.

HOLY JUMPING JESUS BATMAN SH*T!!!!! This place is AWESOME! I had Puerto Chile Verde and two tacos (pollo & asada). Incredible flavors, fresh and hot. I haven't tasted something this good in a long, long time. I can't think of another Mexican place that comes close to being this good right now. Very clean and the lady that waited on me was super friendly. They're gonna get sick of seeing me.

Not bad yet not great either...lacked flavor and seasoning though that's only my opinion. My favorite food is Mexican food and being from California I search near and far for really good authentic Mexican restaurants whether it's a hole in the wall or large establishment doesn't matter so when I came across this place on my Yelp and they had decent reviews I decided to give them a try. Well I'm so happy I only ordered for myself because I would've been very disappointed to have spent money for the family on bland food.

Wonderful Smoked Pork Chops in an amazing Red Sauce!!! And a lot of pork chops as you can see.

It's a low key spot that has some pretty incredible food. I had maybe the best carnitas I've ever had here.

There's a parking lot in this plaza, and we were seated immediately upon arrival. They offered complementary chips and dips (salsa and queso). We ordered additional guac. The chorizo queso is sooooo good! I ordered the birria taco plate and I'd say this is very authentic compared to food back home (California)! They were generous with the birria and the consome is chefs kiss!!! The staff did a wonderful job in assuring our needs were met and that we were satisfied. I hope this place is just renovating and hopefully will reopen in the foreseeable future. I would love to see this place continue to thrive!

Doing four stars for the food. I would do 3.5 for staff. :(…read more I loved the salsa (fresh and spicy) and the complementary queso like dip. I loved the shredded beef enchilada! Really good and would order again. Rice and beans were probably above average. My dining partner asked how the chile relleno was prepared. (He doesn't like the eggy batter.) We were literally told that it came premade and frozen and was "just fried." Obviously, he ordered the street tacos instead. We sat at the bar and it took a bit to get waited on but the manager jumped in and gave us water and silverware. I liked my Blackberry-Rosemary Marg but I honestly didn't feel like it had much tequila in it. The regular marg was just OK. Since it is a tequila bar and we sat at the bar, I would have liked to have discussed tequilas but my bad for not asking. Would have loved to have done a tasting. The menu was informative. I would go back when in south Tulsa. Not sure I would make it a destination. (Well, maybe. Those enchiladas were good! It is a cute place.

Even though the website suggests…read morereservations, we called to check if they accepted walk-ins, which they did so that's good to know that both options are available. As what was stated over the phone, the moment we walked in, we were seated. The place is very intimate in space, I'd recommend for dates. I went with the Enchiladas, something I've been craving for a couple of months & La Tertulia helped that fix. There were a few meats to choose from & I went with chorizo. The wait on the food wasn't long (people were starting to fill in as well & it didn't stop the servers from being on point) & the food was really good. Coming in with 3 enchiladas, stuffed with the chorizo & the fixins, I was left full after I finished. The spanish rice & pinto beans were good as well, paired good with the enchiladas. The chorizo looked more like breakfast sausage more than the chorizo that's more on the dark brown + reddish tint I'm used too. The enchiladas also come with chiles (I picked green) & plenty of cheese. Side Note: Chips & salsa were also super good, my favorite type of salsa. Kinda like a Taquera/Molcajete style. I was so hungry that the chips & salsa didn't slow me down from running through my main entree.

It's well-worn but clean. Staff is quick and friendly. The prices are very reasonable. You'll leave full, but not bloated. I've been a fan of El Rio Verde for many years and always look forward to eating here. It's not a large place and only has perhaps four or five booths and a half-dozen tables, and it fills up fast at lunch. They're known for their "Wet Burrito," but the enchiladas and burritos are also outstanding. The refried beans are fresh and made in-house. The salsa is freshly made too and very good, but not memorable like the food. You'll see people from all walks of life eating here - couples, single moms with children, police officers, business people, blue collar workers, and everyone in-between. If you want really good Mexican food that is not TexMex or from a chain restaurant, try this place! You won't regret it! One of my favorite places in Tulsa. However, as of this review, be aware that Utica Avenue, just east of the restaurant, has been blocked to north-bound traffic only for water main replacement, so getting into the neighborhood is easier than leaving. Plan to go toward downtown on the service road next to I-244 for most efficient egress.

The normal salsa that is brought out is good, but if you get the spicy salsa... now that is memorable in more ways than way with flavor and spice. Of course we got the queso and honestly this was probably one of my favorite white queso's I have had in a long time....and I get queso pretty much every Mexican spot. I ordered the vampiros and a normal crispy taco... it was awesome!!! Service was good and honestly I didn't have any complaints. The prices are on point and you're going to have a great meal for a great price. Go check it out!!!
