I have tried tacos all over Tulsa. Los Hermanos has a nice selection of menu options and friendly service. It's just a bit slow as they cook everything to order, so if it's busy, it can be a wait. Tacos are good though - I have tried chicken, steak, chorizo, and pork. The grapefruit and orange Jarritos soft drinks are my favorites. Since The Kid was out of school on Fall Break, and it was a Tuesday, she not so subtly asked me where we would be eating Tacos for lunch. Since we were in the area, we let Yelp! find us a great street taco place, since The Kid (aka Tacocat) is about all things Taco. The place is fairly large, with an adjacent dining room and plenty of parking. Seating is all tables and not at all crowded, with seating for around 60. The printed menu is pretty small and to the point, but features some dishes that you just don't find in a lot of other place, such as huaraches, sincronizadas, sopas and gorditas. Also posted on a wall was the menu de dio, which had a couple of things not on the printed menu, so I'd definitely look at that as well before ordering. The food is pretty simple and straightforward without flair or frills. That's not to say it's not without flavor and depth. The Kid had 2 carne asada tacos, and I had a couple of same along with a chorizo and carnitas tacos. All came liberally garnished with cilantro and diced onions on fresh, hot corn tortillas, with lime wedges and sliced radishes on the side. Also brought to the table were bottles of a red and green salsa. Both salsas paired equally well with any of the tacos, and additional shakers on the table with an oregano-herb blend and a spicy pepper blend was a welcome addition to the garnishment. While enjoying the tacos, I found myself comparing to similar fare I've had, and Los Hermanos stacked up quite well with some of the better efforts I've had in town. If I could offer up any critique, and it's just that, not at all a complaint, is that the meat could be a little more flavorful. Maybe a little more char on the outsides possibly. As it was, while quite flavorful and good, it just lacked about a "half an oomph" of flavor that would have taken it over the edge for me. This is a small, clean and friendly staffed restaurant that has an authentic selection of Mexican dishes. I had the usual carne asada and my wife had the chicken enchiladas. I ordered an extra chili toreado, but it does come with one. The chilies were Serranos instead of jalapenos that are usually served at the Americanized Mexican restaurants. They were good. The beef was a little tougher than most I have had, but it was okay. The chicken enchiladas were good and packed with shredded chicken. The meals come with beans, rice and a little lettuce /salad. They provide a selection of two salsas for the food. Hand made fresh tortillas come with the meal. You can watch them being made. The tortillas and the friendly service really stood out. There are several dishes on their menu that seem to be big hits with the locals; the tacos and the sopes. Next trip, I will give them a try. Tacos Los Hermanos = good to great tacos, but not the absolute best taco I've had. 1. Service was very friendly. I was a little worried that I would have to dig up some high school Spanish, but English was fine. Also, the lady who took our order had FANTASTIC eyeliner. I say this with all seriousness. 2. They take credit cards. Score! 3. The tacos themselves were good, but not mind-blowing. Each one was topped with chopped white onions and cilantro, and came with salsa, radishes, and lime wedges on the side. I tried the carnitas, buche, and lengua. Since the closing of one of my favorite Mexican hole in the wall places, I have been searching for the next best burrito. This week we tried this place. I was amazed about how clean this place was inside. Their kitchen is open for the public to see everything that goes in there. I ordered the Pastor Burrito ( marinated pork) and my buddy ordered Carne Asada Burrito. ( each burrito was under $5 with tax). Although they were both pretty good, we both agreed the Pastor was a bit better. They bring us new cultural ideas, customs, and, especially, food. If you want to imagine our country without "immigrants," then eat at home tonight. Unfortunately, for many Americans, that means reading the microwave instructions on the package. Now, go eat a couple of tacos at Los Hemanos. Yep, the benefit of immigration... Like the Little Engine That Could, I kept chugging along and finally my persistence paid off. I had the time, was in the area, and my stomach reminded me that I was hungry. So, I thought, I would try one more time and I am so happy that I did... Before I get started on the food, I need to make a quick comment. Thank you Los Hemanos for providing a bilingual menu. Now, would you get rid of it? I noticed that there were far fewer choices provided on the English side than the Spanish side. Yelpers, you are really missing out if you order from the English side. Take a chance, ask a few questions, and enjoy the food. Believe me, you will not be disappointed. I mean, come on! You have already chosen to take a chance on eating at a "restaurant" on wheels located in a parking lot. Why stop now? Go all the way. Eat a taco of tongue, cactus, or some other exotic meat. Okay, now the food... Upon arrival, I simply stated that I was there to eat whatever they thought I should. I had heard too many good things and felt assured that I would not be disappointed in what I received. I ended up with four tacos and a "sandwich." The "sandwich" was a new experience for me. I have had tortas before, but this one "hair lipped" me. Simply, take sliced ham, avocado, cheese, white dressing, lettuce, tomato, and pickled jalapenos and forget the bun and grab a tortilla. Then you cook all the ingredients like you would a quesadilla! What you get is a Mexican version of a panini. I must say, it was pretty damn good, but paled in comparison to the tacos. However, it is definitely worth a try. As for the stars of my plate, the tacos were outrageous. Outrageously good! I had carnitas, lingua, pork cooked in green chilies, and pork cooked in red chilies. The carnitas were different than what you will find in other restaurants in that they are still cooked in lard, but look and taste more like pork chops. Of my four, this was the least flavorful, but was a perfect vehicle for the two provided salsas. Los Hemanos provides a green salsa (better than Riobertos) that is simply awesome and a red salsa that I found very satisfying and better than Mr. Tacos and La Flama's. The lingua was the best I have had. If you follow my reviews, I found Mr. Tacos lingua too chunky and fatty and thought that La Flama had the best around. I have been proven wrong. The lingua is cut small and cooked in a manner that leaves it both more flavorful and tender than La Flama. A perfect taco. The pork cooked in green chili was great. It had an unexpected richness that I found wonderful. It reminded me of a Mexican version of comfort food. The pork had taken on much of the flavor of the green chilies and was cut in a manner that allowed it to become tender, but keep its meaty consistency. Also, they had cut the meat so that it would retain a little bit of fat. This added to the richness of flavor and gave another level of consistency that I found quite compelling. As for the pork cooked in red chilies, it lacked the "richness" of the green chili version, because they had gone for more spice. Being a guy who loves hot foods, this one made my toes curl. Other than the difference in spice, the pork was prepared the same as the aforementioned taco and was excellent. This leaves me in a pickle. With my new policy of no five star ratings (see previous reviews for reasoning why,) I am left leaving Los Hemanos with four stars. However, that lingua taco makes me want to renege on my policy. It was so good. I guess I will leave you with this, there may be a better place in the world, maybe even in Tulsa, but Los Hemanos will deliver great tacos and leave you with a definite smile on your face. This place is great; the perfect little hole in the wall! I got the carne asada and the flavor was great, though the meat was a little tough. The rice and beans that came with it was wonderful, though! The rice wasn't dry or bland and the beans were creamy and flavorful. The grilled jalapeno pepper was the perfect little burst of heat for the carne asada. My husband got the pork huarache and it was absolutely divine; especially with the salsa verde. As other reviewers have mentioned, I was very interested to try the homemade tortillas. They are flour and have the slightly thicker consistency with a nice bit of chew. The flour tortillas are griddled to brown while still pliable. I had them on both tacos and a huaraches. The tortillas are to die for! These alone set Tacos los Hermanos apart. Also, with your meal you are served squeeze bottles of both salsa rojo and verde. I love this as you can customize each bite. Carne asada, pretty standard fare. Pastor, a bit more flavor, what you expect for pastor. Carnitas, along with the tortillas and salsa, are cut above. I had them with the huaraches, which was served on the thick oblong flour tortilla, topped with creamy beans, carnitas, lettuce, tomato, crema, queso freso, and topped with slices of avacado. This dish was memorable. The carnitas have a slightly sweet flavor balanced with some crispy bits. Carnitas were moist and delicious. Highly recommend! read more
