I come here for their mole chicken, which is the absolute best I have found since the old Santa Fe Mexico that was at 15th and Sheridan. Location is a little sketchy but we've been going for years and never encountered any issues. Small Mexican restaurant in midtown Tulsa. Not exceptional but it does well enough to recommend. The restaurant does not really have table service so no free chips and salsa which is a huge bummer. The cost is fairly inexpensive, not the cheapest but definitely not expensive. Food is good, but again not exceptional. Out of the all the tacos, the spicy pork was the best for me. Tulsa is very busy for brunch so we came here ! I need to get better with my Spanish!!! Orders the Torta asada which was very good! Here's where I needed my Spanish, Ordered chilaquiles for the hubs he wanted it without the corona cheese but instead with yellow cheese. She said they didn't have yellow ? My hubby said but I see in some of their menu items on the wall??? The chilaquiles would of been better had they had some scrambled eggs in it. Added the asada, would of nice if it was chopped up . Torta Ahogada. I'm glad I didn't get what I wanted! Well, what I thought I wanted. When you pull up to the restaurant, you wonder about your safety. The restaurant is on a back street, surrounded by apartment complexes. Seems odd for a restaurant location. All of the business in the isolated row of three small suites have collapsible security panels for the windows and doors. You take a good look around before you get out of the car. No one loitering in the parking lot or nearby. Ok we are here ...let's try it. And it is safe... Not a bad little restaurant. The inside is noticeably well worn, crowded with small tables and a few booths. All appear to have retired from another Mexican restaurant, and are now on their second or third career. The walls are covered with pictures of the menu items. A hand written menu covers the south wall. Daily specials and menu alerts are posted on the front door and on smaller white boards in the restaurant. Order at the counter. Indisputably authentic Mexican food. For my wife the chicken enchiladas. A very authentic meal. Three flavorful chicken enchiladas. The corn tortillas had been dipped in red sauce, then sprinkled with cheese, beans and rice along for the ride. No chips and salsa on the table. You can get a small cup of salsa if you ask for it. I was surprised again. My wife liked the meal! I sometimes ask myself "who the hell would go to a Mexican restaurant to eat a sandwich?" I have only tried a couple of tortas, just so I could say that I did. Nothing special. But, that red one, had my attention. I got an education today on the red one, the torta ahogada. That, a torta ahogada, is what I thought I wanted after seeing pictures. And those are exactly the two words I used when ordering. However, and I do mean a big however, I said with steak. That voided the torta ahogada order, and the meal became a beef steak torta. Not that big juicy, red, drowned sandwich I was hoping for. The torta was delivered to the table, not looking anything like what I was expecting. I was too hungry to sort this all out right then. The sandwich I had today at Tacos El Rinconcito set the bar high for the comparison for all future tortas. Chopped steak, beans, avocado, tomato, onion, lettuce and I believe a little of the spicy red gravy broth that goes with the real torta ahogada, because the lady thought that was what I was trying to order. That delicious sandwich was surrounded by a fresh toasted bolillo. It was like a very good gourmet steak burger. Excellent. After scarfing down that steak torta, I wanted to understand where I went wrong. I went back to the counter and emphasized that was the best torta I have ever had; however, I was trying to get one of those red sandwiches flooded with the spicy red sauce. She explained. "Those are pork only. They are simple sandwich with the spicy stewed pork a few fresh onion rings and downed in the spicy red broth." That's it, nothing more. She pointed to the picture on the wall. From outside and its location in a rough part of town, this place might not seem a good family dinner setting. Well that is what we thought at least from first impression. Man were we wrong. If you're about appearances, don't bother...this is in a small strip mall off the 44 frontage road and looks a bit rundown, but I try never to judge a book by its cover. This is a true hole in the wall. Inside is small and cozy, and the chairs are the heavy carved style you find in Mexican restaurants...bulky but strangely comfortable and pretty much unbreakable. Lady at the counter didn't speak much English...so there wasn't much small talk...which also made exploring the menu a bit difficult. Momma ordered street tacos, I had the Camarones el Rinconcito, which was about a dozen whole jumbo shrimp, heads and all, with potatoes and corn on the cob in a spicy red sauce, served with a toasted roll, rice, lettuce, tomato and avacado on the side. It was delicious! Momma had a chorizo, carne , and a pork taco, with the chorizo her favorite. All three were ordered without raw onions and proportioned well. Everything was served in styrofoam (which I hate!) but during these times is understandable for sanitary reasons. Only beverages available were bottled from Mexico or cans... Pros: The spicy pork tacos with the onion, cilantro, and pineapple are pretty close to the ones I ate growing up in northern Mexico. I think this is as good as it gets in Tulsa. Cleaner than this other place we went to in Tulsa. Accepts credit cards. Cons: I don't know what it was about his neighborhood, but I was really scared to be there. I've been to much worse neighborhoods, but I actually feared for my safety being there in broad daylight. my husband says I don't ever have to go back and he'll just bring me to go from here. One of the places I go when I'm homesick for classic Tex-Mex dishes. Portions are huge, flavors are authentic, and as Maria lightly serenades while she shuffles around the small kitchen.. you can't help but feel at home. I recommend a late breakfast 10:00-10:30am and just skip lunch.. because you will not be hungry again till dinner! Chilaquiles' is the best I've had.. the refried beans are creamy and made in house.. not dropped out of can. The rice is fluffy and full of flavor. Ok, so the gorditas from this taco place are ASTOUNDING and delicious and some of the best I have ever had. I have eaten here three times and the food is off the charts. The drive to the establishment is always disconcerting, and the fact that one of my long time Tulsa Friends calls this place "murder tacos" because apparently there has been some crime in this little area. I was told "don't worry about paying, you can pay next time!" I had cash so I paid. How nice is that!!! Wife had Pollo Ranchero. I actually loved the spiciness of it. Chicken was tender and delicious. I had the wet burrito with spicy pork. BIG is all I can say but still full of goodness like all huge burritos. My mother and I had a great experience here. We managed to just beat the evening rush. We both ordered some gorditas - pollo, asada, and pastor. We agreed that it was challenging deciding which was the best. Shredded chicken is often bland but not this. Very tasty. They came with rice and beans and two tasty salsas: an avocado green one and a red one which reminded me of the tasty salsa you get everywhere in Baja. Great place frequented by locals. Definition of hole-in-the-wall! This is the type of place I get super excited for but at the same time a little sad. Obviously excited because I've just found a gem hidden in the rough but sad because I want them more exposed so everyone else can enjoy their cuisine as much as I have! The neighborhood El Rinconcito is in definitely doesn't give you the warm and fuzzies but as soon as you're inside their door, eating their delicious food, all concept of location will fall away because their pronounced flavor begins to consume your thoughts and attention. From fellow yelpers and friends who have visited before, I understood that ordering the tacos was a non-negotiable. I will pay it forward with this recommendation and add that at less than $2 each, even if tacos aren't your favorite (we can't be friends...) give it a try anyway! El Rinconcito's menu boasts tacos of many varieties including chorizo, carnitas, spicy pork, beef, chicken and for the more adventurous or traditionalist chicharron, cabeza or tripa! On our first visit (there will be many, many more) my fiancé and I ordered the carnitas, beef, and spicy pork to split. If I had to pick a favorite I think it would be the spicy pork but in all three you could taste the love and time put into the recipes and preparation. We could have eaten 50 but had to save room because as soon as I saw it on the menu I knew I wasn't leaving with out it - the torta ahogada!! If you're unfamiliar with this item it's your traditional shredded pork torta but smothered with a rich and spicy red chile sauce and topped with a few fresh onion slices. I've been eyeing every Mexican restaurant menu hoping to indulge in one of these creations ever since learning about the dish from Rick Bayliss in one of the many foodie shows I watch. Wow, just wow! The torta alone is supremely satisfying with its tender, juicy pork and toasted bolillo bun but drowning (drowned sandwich is the literal translation) this popular dish in slightly acidic and spicy chile sauce just takes it to a whole other atmosphere. Really, my review wavers between 3-5 stars because I have mixed feelings about Tacos El Riconcito. The food is great, but the location is ehhh. Food: 5 stars The food is really, really good! This is a legit Mexican restaurant. I consider myself kind of knowledgeable about food, and I consider my Spanish to be good enough to at least read a menu, but there were words I have never seen, or heard of, or even thought were real Spanish words. Hawayana? This was never in the vocab list of Realidades. (One Google search result tells me this is a dance track by Carlos Crespo. Another helpful result tells me the English equivalent is, of course, "Hawayan." Thanks, Google.) Mystery meats(?) aside, the food offerings are very authentic. They have menudo as a Sunday special! The menu was pretty extensive, to the point of being almost overwhelming for those of us who are used to On the Border rather than Oaxaca. With the help of the food photos posted around the restaurant, I chose the carnes rancheras, which was served with rice, beans, tortillas (my choice of flour or corn!), and some lettuce, tomato, and avocado. The beef was excellent: a little spicy and salty but very savory. The rice and beans were also very good, and tasted like they were homemade and not from a can. The tortillas were also excellent; they were served steaming hot and didn't taste like stale supermarket ones. My companion got a burrito with carne asada, and that was also delicious. It was stuffed, and comparably sized to a Chipotle burrito. The meat was also tasty, and it was filled with the same rice and beans as above. My friend went so far as to say, "Mmmm," and, "This tortilla tastes homemade." Service: 3-4 stars The lady at the register was friendly. The lady who brought our food was cordial, but not effusive. The table bussing was lacking. I didn't see any tables being cleared while we were there, which kind of limits seating options for newcomers. Location: 3 stars The little shopping center El Riconcito is in is just a tad shady. "Yeah, I didn't really feel safe while we were there," was how my friend described the surrounding area. I can't complain because I saw some wicked face tats. Some miscellaneous business: Order at the counter, and they bring the food out to you. Our wait time was 14 minutes from order to arrival on a Sunday afternoon. We saw some people leave tips on the table, and others not, sooooo use your best judgment? Credit card minimum is $5. Spanish would probably be helpful, but isn't necessary. We came armed with four years of high school Spanish and could have muddled through our orders, but the lady at the register spoke English. Let me start this by saying that I am generally disappointed in Tulsa's Mexican food. I am from Southern California and moved here three years ago. I miss the 'legit' Mexican food from my childhood. Don't expect fancy service or cutlery. This is a shut up and eat kind of place and it is exactly like the small restaurants you can find all over the suburbs of LA or San Diego. We really intended to eat more OK barbecue while in Tulsa, but for our first night, decided that we wanted Mexican (not Tex-Mex). Ms T found Tacos El Rinconcito on Yelp. It did not involve a long drive so that is where we went. Some of the reviews made it and its neighborhood sound sketchy but we did not find this to be true other than the bevy of smokers outside of the nearby laundromat. What we did find was a nice little local taqueria with a huge menu of authentic food. It doesn't hurt to be able to at least speak a little food Spanish, but English is spoken well enough. I ordered too much food, but why not. I started with a couple of tacos, one al pastor and one chorizo. The chorizo was fine, with nice browning on the meat, but not the best chorizo I have had. The carne al pastor had excellent seasoning and a good grill crust. There is no doubt, this is a good place for tacos. I also ordered chilaquiles rojo (because they don't do them verdes) with two fried eggs. The red sauce was rich and well flavored with a little heat. It appeared to be tomato and red chile, so had good balance. This was very good home-style food. Ms T ordered a Wet Burrito with beef. The beef is chopped and mixed with rice and vegetables. The burrito is very large and smothered with a tart red sauce. I don't get burritos because I eat flour tortillas only in limited applications. Ms T however is a devotee and liked this one very much. I must admit the filling was fine, but just don't like the soggy flour tortilla. That is just a question of style. With a few tweaks, I could see myself easily giving them 4 stars, but until then, a solid A-OK isn't bad. First the good. The chorizo taco was tasty, and from what I could tell, the chorizo seems to be made in house. Any place that makes their own chorizo gets a plus from me. Sorry Spain, Mexico beats you in the chorizo department. Then comes the really good, the tripa taco. Now I know, tripe isn't for everyone. It's usually the texture that's off putting for some, but not for me. Whether it's in a taco, or in menudo, I happily gobble it up. The tripe was so flavorful in the taco. Equally as good was their red and green salsa. Spot on traditional. Now for the needed tweaks. The carnitas taco was way too dry. Not even the salsa helped it out. The chicharrones taco was dry too, but it was flavorless and not much of a serving. I had to toss some salt on to bring out some flavor. I can't remember ever adding salt to a taco, especially one with chicharrones. I love mom and pop places. Service is slower typically because they run with minimal staff, and I don't expect the space to wow me in decor. This place is no different, but it's the food that keeps mom and pop places going. The food here has real potential. They just need to tweak a couple of their tacos. I look forward to trying some of their other offerings. read more

This is my second trip to the "Little Corner." If you have never been to Tacos El Rinconcito here are a few things to consider. 1) The menu is extensive and can be found on a board to the left of the register. Daily specials are listed on a board behind the register. Pictures of favorite menu items adorn the wall. 2) Orders are prepared one at a time. This place is busy for lunch and can take 20-30 min for orders to be delivered. 3) This is Mexican food. Not a chips and salsa place. Tacos are adorned with chopped onions amd cilantro. 1st Visit - Ordered Carne Asada Torta. The meat was tender with a bit of chew. Lightly seasoned as it should be. The flavors come from the accompanied ingredients of beans, mayo, lettuce, onions, cilantro and a bit of avocado. The roasted tomato salsa on the side provides the final flourish. This is a typical sauce with a vinegar zing and medium heat. The bread is fresh which is always a concern and toasted to stand up to the ingredients. All in all a great torta. 2nd Visit - Ordered one ea. taco: carnitas, chorizo, and al pastor. 2 rojos pork tamales. The tacos were served with lime wedges and both red and green salsas. First the chorizo taco. Mild to medium flavor from spice and amazingly little grease. Nice flavor with either salsa. The carnitas were tasty though mildly disappointing. The pork was tender with a mild flavor and no crunchy exterior as true carnitas should be. Finally the al Pastor taco is the star. This is hand down the best pastor around, and yes I have had the excellent version at La Flama. The meat here is a bit richer and the spices are well absorbed into both the meat and pineapple. Here the pinapple is added probably as the pastor is reheating to help create a rich and flavorful sauce. The tamales were okay. The first one had a great ratio of spicy pork to masa. The masa texture was a bit dense but tasty. The ranchera sauce served on the side is bursting with roasted tomato and garlic. The sauce is the star of the show. The second tamale had a bit too much masa for my taste. This place is authentic and delicious! read more
