to be honest i was pretty nervous to try this place with all of the negative reviews.. but my grandparents were stuck on dinner at Chimi's, and i was pleasantly surprised ... FOOD : we all pretty much got street tacos, my grandpa got a black bean and cheese tostada. The chicken street tacos were really delicious, the chicken wasn't rubbery or fatty and the overall taco seemed fresh. i would've liked more chicken on them, but that's a small con. Everyone seemed to really like what they got, so nothing too upsetting from us -- we enjoyed our meals at Chimi's! Not outstanding but not bad. We did not dine in so i can't say whether or not the service is great, but who we did talk to were kind and our food was made in 10 minutes! My bride and I went for lunch today and were surprised by how the foos has changed. my enchiladas were nothing like previous visits. we sent the queso back because it was water....! Business was slow today, and so was food poisoning preparation. They had draft beer, but they were out all except Modelo, so we got Modelo. It wasn't cold. Dan got the beef chimichanga with white queso. I got a chili relleno. They were out of raisin sauce, so I chose queso. Dan's chimichanga was dry and my relleno was a bit charred on the bottom. Had a really good Saturday lunch here. Hubby's chicken fajitas were exceptionally good, he said. I got one Sonoran enchilada w/ barracho beans. I quit ordering the Sonoran when they quit dipping the tortilla in red sauce before filling and topping. But today it was really good anyway. There was actually cilantro in the salsa. Our exceptionally pleasant waiter called me a "guacamole thief"; caught me stealing off the fajita platter. It was good, as was the accompanying pico -- fresh, light, tomatoy, oniony. No leftovers! I have been a long-standing repeat customer with Chimis. Since the days they had one location in a house on Cherry street. They have always given us remarkable service. However today we went to the Chimis at 81st east of Sheridan.It was the worst service I have had anywhere in a long time. Not up to their standard. Our waiter acted as though he didn't want to be there. The Manager never came out from the partition by the kitchen.,He looked out the window but hid in the kitchen on the phone constantly ignoring his customers and service. I asked for more chips, salsa and tea for my wife. We waited a considerable amount of time. I finally got up went into the kitchen and reminded my waiter I needed our chips, salsa, and tea. By the way this was right in front of the manager. You would think that would have clued the manager his service was lacking! But he obviously was not concerned about his business!! I passed four Mexican restaurants on my way to Chimis. I will never return to the 81st and Sheridan location again!!! THEY SUCK. I might return to the 15th Street Chimis I really pray this is not a sign they are going out of business. my husband and I went to dinner last night. 8/4/21. We were seated immediately, moderately busy night. We also had chips and salsa almost immediately after seating. we waited about 5-10 minutes for our drink order. My husband and I decided to split a margarita. Not soon after ordering our waitress comes over demanding my ID (for reference I am 30) while blocking me in the booth. I kindly asked her to let me out so I could get my purse across from me. She then proceeded to stomp away. After getting my ID I walked to the front and showed both my waitress and manager, then sat back down. After that I received nothing but dirty looks and bad attitude. Nasty weather last week, no one wanted to cook and everyone craving Mexican...so we fired up Yelp. Ordered queso with chorizo, beef fajitas, chicken tacos and shrimp tacos. We go to this location because it's normally slower than the others and we get seated right away. That was the case last night. We got inside, seated right away, and got our food/drinks in a timely manner. The issue I have with this place is the fact that we were joined by a cockroach for our dinner. We informed the waiter and he seemed to not care. He was more interested in getting our cards to pay than to even get rid of the cockroach right away. The service was good, the order was very disappointing. I ordered "shrimp ceviche," and what came out was what appeared to be lumps of normally cooked shrimp, sitting on top of pico de gallo, topped with cilantro and avocado. The portion size was good, but it had none of the essence of what ceviche is supposed to be. Lime should transition the shrimp from raw to cooked. The ingredients should be mixed together, not layered so that my ultimate dish was flavorless. If you want good, cheap, authentic ceviche cooked properly, go down to La Cevicheria on Mingo. The server was good, and the manager did agree to take the dish off my bill. When she came over, she asked what was wrong with the dish and I explained what I said here, and her response was "Oh, so it was just missing the lime?" As if the lime was just a garnish slice that one gets with a shot of tequila. Lime is an **essential** ingredient...there should be at least a cup of lime juice in a normal recipe, not just a splash :). I get messing up a dish...but seeming to not understand what went wrong or minimizing the error is a different story. Chimis always sucks with their burnt overly salted meat and usually bad service. I only come here when my friends insist on meeting here. I once ordered an avocado salad at lunch and asked to add some grilled chicken. I think the salad was $11.50, and I figured the up charge on the chicken would only be about $3. The salad was okay, but the chicken was horribly salty. When I received my bill they had charged me $19.99 for a chicken salad and a water! I didn't even get an alcoholic beverage, and by the time I paid for the salad with tax; and added a bit of a tip it came to about $23 or so. I even inquired after the incredulous salad charge just to have them verify it. I will say out of the seven times or so I've been here, the young man waiting tables last week was just fine; however, after the $21 salad I still hate this Chimi's location. I just left a review on another one of their locations and realized I forgot to say how much I love the beans and rice, among many other things! Their rice has always been my favorite. Haven't had anything like it anywhere else. Love the beans too and I am not usually huge on beans. They have a few different styles, but my favorites are the black beans and refried beans. I actually don't think I have had the barracha beans but have heard they are delicious as well. I love all of the mexican food of course, but if you are ever in the mood for a burger try their California Burger. Holy crap its good! Ate at the bar on a Saturday afternoon, I was the only person at the bar and there probably wasn't more than 5 or 6 tables with customers. So it's not like they were "too" busy. They got my order wrong, took forever to get my drink refilled, had to wait 10 minutes for my check because the waitress was busy chatting with a friend.....after she told me she'd be right back.
