Loved it here! We came here for a family birthday and I'm so glad we stopped in. We arrived at 6:00 PM on a weekend and there was plenty of seating- at the bar and there were plenty of tables available. The ambiance, decor - everything here is gorgeous! We loved the chips and salsa, the pina coladas, the guac and I ordered the chicken enchiladas. I loved everything I had here. I'd definitely come here again. The servers were all friendly and nice. This place felt like a social experiment from the moment we sat down. I kept waiting for the guy from Bar Rescue to jump out from behind the kitchen. The tacos were the size of a poker chip topped with microscopic scraps of steak that looked like someone swept them off the grill with a dustpan. The chips and salsa situation was performance art. They brought out exactly 14 chips (yea - I counted) alongside ~2 tablespoons of salsa. I've gotten more complimentary food samples at Costco on a Saturday afternoon. The carnitas somehow managed to be both dry and flavorless, which honestly feels harder to accomplish than making them good. At one point my angry fiancée looked at me like this was somehow my fault for picking the place, so we eventually gave up and walked to the food truck around the corner for actual tacos that tasted like they wanted us to survive the night. Popped in for a quick drink and an app yesterday and I'll definitely have to come back. The inside of this place is GORGEOUS - with Mexican art murals to a tequila stocked balcony in the back. Vibes. I also noticed a projector on the ceiling and some large speakers so I'm wondering if Mexi is also an event space? We sat in a half table booth in the back but there is bar seating as well. The cocktail menus are SO CUTE. They're large cards (pictured) held together by a ring and are designed to look like lotería cards. My boyfriend got a spicy mezcal margarita which he enjoyed but we both agreed my drink, El Cantante, was the winner of the two. The mango juice was super refreshing yet somehow the drink wasn't too sweet for me. We were served quickly. For a bite we decided on chips and salsa. The roasted peanut matcha seemed interesting. Well, I did enjoy it, I really wish there was a menu option to get all three sources in the slightly larger serving of chips for a reduced price. I'm sure we could've ordered all three for the listed menu price, but this definitely would've appeal to me more as I think this also would've been nice to balance with a more traditional "chips and dip" salsa. For an authentic Mexico City vibe, and truly amazing tequila and mezcal options, this place is top of the list! While the food was not consistently amazing, the burrito was one of the best I've had in NYC! And the ambience is stellar: dark wood and small Mexican touches are peppered tastefully through the place. Ambiance: 5/5. The seating options range from small tables to large bench seating. The decor is amazing, with plenty of hand crafted Mexican sculptures and crafts on the walls. There is even an indoor balcony with Dia de la Muerte swag! The bathrooms are nice too. Food: 4/5. The carne asada burrito is amazing; the meat is tender and favorful and the ingredients work perfectly together. The chicken enchiladas were ok, they didn't have a strong flavor profile and came out cold! Luckily the waiter replaced them with a warmer dish. Service: 4/5. They were understaffed on a Saturday night so the service was slow. But they were friendly and replaced a cold dish (see above). Solid overall. Value: 4/5. I came here on a Friday night. Maybe because of the weather there wasn't a need to make reservations. Wherever you sit it is quite drafty so just remember to wear layers here even the bathroom was cold here too. Service wise it could've went better. They either came by when we needed them or they were no where to be seen it was 50/50. Food wise, tried out the steak carne asada and the tres leches and I enjoyed the steak a lot. My friend and I were craving Mexican last night, and Mexi popped up on our search. Given its proximity to the L, we ended up deciding to try it out! We went at about 7pm on a Tuesday and it was pretty quiet with a few tables occupied outside. Inside was quite large, but not super busy. We ended up ordering the guac, a quesadilla and birria tacos. Tried this newer (opened for about a year now) Mexican restaurant in Williamsburg last Saturday evening for dinner. We were able to get bar seats without a reservation (they had a few large groups that evening). The place is such a vibe. Really cool décor and a really impressive bar, particularly the mezcal selection. I had the espressito cocktail (basically espresso martini with mezcal)- I'm not usually a fan of mezcal/smoky cocktails but this was very well balanced and delicious. We shared the guac to start which was pretty good. For dinner, I had the pork shoulder al pastor skewers. The meat itself was tender, but surprisingly bland. It also seemed like they tried too hard to make the entrée visually appealing and missed the mark portion-wise. There was a generous portion of meat, but too few accompaniments such as the tortillas, salsa, etc. Also, I think the pineapple was more just for show which was a bummer lol. Service was friendly and warm but they seemed pretty busy so it ended up being very, very slow. Wasn't an issue for us though because we were having a great time chatting and catching up. The food is what is really holding this restaurant back, it was just not that tasty. The guacamole has tomatoes on top which I haven't seen before but the actual guacamole itself was not tasty, there was no chunkiness to the avocados which made me wonder where the guacamole came from. The Birria Tacos are $26 and no where near as good as Birria Landia, the consome paired with it was barely flavorful. The drinks here are very good! But the food needs a lot of improvement, especially for the price. For a total of 3 people, we got 2 apps and 3 mains, 1 drink each and 1 dessert total and it was $85 a person, while normal for NYC, what wasn't normal was the quality of the food, which makes me feel like the $85 per person (after tip) was not worth it. read more

I am always excited to see new place to try in the neighborhood so when I saw Mexi was opening up I definitely put it on my list. The drinks were pretty good at the place and the service was very good. We didn't feel rushed to leave. We asked for recommendations from the waiter she was amazing ! I have to say she sure knows the food very well. We first ordered an appetizer ahi tuna tostaditas they were great!! The Quesadillas were amazing but the skewers we were disappointed at the taste. They are missing flavor. Wasn't crazy about them. The dessert was wow!! Very different tres leches we have ever had but we loved it!! I think this place has a-lot of potential! Give this place a try ! They are a little on the pricey side but worth it. Also they close early that's the down side. They have amazing music in the background but it would be even better if they would keep it open a little later at least with the bar section open. Came here for a birthday and it was very lovely. The portions, particularly the guac, were a bit smaller than expected. But it was delicious, perfectly spiced. The plating is so impressive. Every dish was yummy and unique. Definitely recommend the ceviche and the octopus for an app. The birria of the birria tacos was a bit too oily for my liking but the meat was terrific. Mexican restaurant with Italian influences and one of the best mezcal selections that I've come across in the world. Peculiar atmosphere. The crowd at the bar are the typical folks I'd expect to see in Williamsburg. The the tables across the bar were filled with families with children. I had a flight of mezcals. A fellow named Christian was in charge of the mezcals. Dude knew his mezcals. One of the most knowledgeable individuals I've spoken to regarding mezcal. He put together a fantastic flight for me. It was pricey but one of the best mezcal tastings that I've had. Food wise, we stated with the avocado mousse with bruschetta creme brûlée salsa and the tuna Serrano aguachile. The salsa was a particularly interesting dish. More in line with a tuna tartare. For the main courses, we shared the pipian chicken mole verde and the masa gnocchi. I preferred the masa gnocchi of the two. It came in a smokier and richer sauce. Closer to a transitional mole but it didn't pack the richness and viscosity that I typically expect from a hallmark mole. For dessert, we shared a chocolate and flan mixed cake. I sat in the bar area and I got to meet "Kevin Alvarez" he was that bartender that night and this guy was incredible, very friendly, professional, and well-known. He recommended the cocktail "El Soldador" and I have to tell you. That cocktail was Lit . I also ate something because u know after a couple of cocktails you get hungry lol I remember getting a salad with some shrimp and it was just delicious. Love the look in this place looks very homey and authentic. The bartenders are all very knowledgeable and know what to recommend. As far as the menu not big at all but great. The drinks we tried 4 and all were amazing in flavor presentation and mix. We love mezcal so a place that makes great cocktails is really nice it's hard to find. My favorite was el chon chon picante so this is a thicker drink but so good it's not super spicy which makes it better and the mezcal is perfect. Also ordered el soldador this is a great drink more on the fruity and sweet side like a tropical drink smooth to drink. The espressito was great I have tried so many expresso martinis and they have been horrible but this one is balanced and tastes like actual coffee. Was there for barely an hour and had such a great experience with the staff. Despite the kitchen closing soon, our server made us feel so comfortable with food and drink without feeling rushed. Best part was the security guard who remembered me from walking by 20 minutes earlier and made us feel special with the simple acknowledgment, a recommendation for their sister bar afterwards, and a quick funny joke. The moment you walk into the restaurant, the wall of liquor is the first thing that catches the eye. I don't think I've ever seen a bar with such a huge variety of great quality tequila and mezcal. Their cocktails are absolutely phenomenal. The El Chon Chon Picante was hands down the best spicy margarita I've ever had. My friends ordered a Mexi Old fashion, a regular margarita and Pina Colada and of course I had to get a little taste of those...oooooh they were amazing. Food presentation is exquisite and all very tasty. We started off with some chips and guacamole, followed up with some tacos and enchiladas, and of course had to do some desert.
