For reference, 2 adults and 3 children dining. Appetizer came out after the meal - we'll get back to that later. Meals came out 2 at a time, solid 5 minutes in between, then finally the last meal. And THE CHILDRENS meals came out last!?!?! How is that okay???? In what world would any server bring out the adults food before the children's - a basket of chicken fingers and a hot dog so dried out and hard that it literally crumbed like a crouton when cutting it. Then the appetizer comes out, once all the meals have finally been delivered to the table. I asked the waitress to take it off the bill since it was supposed to be an appetizer for the kids while they waited for their food. She seemed appalled. She literally said, in a tone loud enough for several tables to hear her , 'I can take it back if you want but I can't take it off the bill. It's perfectly good food' I said again, but it was supposed to be an appetizer. To which she replied 'I can't control when food comes out of the kitchen' Last time I checked, the main part a servers job was putting an appetizer in first, and spacing out the timing of the entrees to ensure the appetizer comes out first. And god forbid you actually noticed that the appetizer hasn't come out yet as you're bringing the main meals out one by one every few minutes. Absolutely horrendous service. After a dental appointment, we were originally going to go to another restaurant but it turned out to be a 40-45 minutes wait. So, we decided to look for someplace else to eat. We happened upon this diner and decided to give it a try. The diner is large, with booths encompassing almost every inch of the place. The walls, booths, and floors are homey shades of burnt sienna and burnt umber and white sconces adorn the walls. Daughter ordered scrapple omelet with rye toast. Daughter liked it a lot but I didn't care for it and found it a little gamey. Hubs ordered Florentine Eggs Benedict, which has 2 poached eggs on a toasted English muffin with Greek feta cheese, baby spinach & Hollandaise sauce served with fruit salad. He thought it was ok but said that the feta cheese was chunky and salty. Lastly, I got the Belgian Waffle with 2 eggs over easy and thought that this was pretty good. Service was quick and friendly. A classic diner in the heart of Metuchen. Our server was kind, attentive, and patient with our large party of 10. We stopped in early enough to catch the lunch special, which includes an entree, soup of the day, and dessert (ice cream, pudding or jello)--all for $13.50! The reuben was stacked with corned beef, and the ratio of Russian dressing to Swiss cheese was just right (no one likes a soggy reuben). My wife ordered the buffalo chicken wrap. It was okay...definitely needed a lot more buffalo sauce. By the time we were leaving at 12:30 the place was filling up, and it was just a normal weekday. I've lost count of how many times I've driven past the Metuchen Diner while driving to the nearby Whole Foods, Walmart or H-Mart but it was not until recently that I had the opportunity to actually have a meal there. I was getting my car repaired at the nearby AAA Service Center and hopped a Lyft to the Diner to have breakfast and I'm glad I did! I'm a big fan of classic American design when it comes to things like diners. With its giant "Metuchen Diner" sign, stone exterior, red roof and plants out in front this diner feels almost timeless. Sure it sits here in 2024 but it may as well be 1984 or 1974 from the look of the exterior and I mean that as a compliment! The interior also looks classic. When you enter there is a cashier/host station that recalls a different era. Look down and you'll see a couple small shelves behind glass. Many diners used to use these shelves to sell candy but nowadays if you see them they're generally empty. Still, it was a nice reminder of what once was. There are lines of booths on either side and there is a counter you can sit at to eat. Towards the back are some regular tables. Do not interpret my description as meaning this place looks old or worn down. Everything is well maintained and clean. I sat at a booth and my server was there very quickly to take my order. I wound up having my usual omelette with mushrooms, spinach and Swiss cheese. The omelett was good. Nothing to write home about but it was a good size and the ingredients tasted fresh. Much to my surprise, while looking at the menu I saw Scrapple! For those not familiar, Scrapple is a dish made of pork scraps and trimmings combined with cornmeal, wheat flour and spices (I'm way oversimplifying it here as the process to make it is very involved). The mash created from these ingredients are shaped into a loaf and slices and fried or grilled (it can also be broiled). I of course ordered it and man, you get a really good sized slice! It comes having been grilled so the outside is nice and crisp while the center is soft. The flavor is intense. Very Earthy and salty at the same time but other seasonings (possibly Paprika?) definitely come through. I found the best way to eat it was to spread it on toast which helped balance out all the flavors. Either way I was very happy to find it here! Trying the Metuchen Diner again. Ordered the pancake special, how could they get pancakes wrong? Strawberries that were red on the outside, but hard, white and not ripe on the inside. Sliced Apples that were tasteless. Either the incoming fruit and vegetable order isn't being checked for quality when delivered or the they purposely order lesser quality provision. Maybe too many of the owners family members are working there? Maybe all of the above. read more

The people that work there are super nice. As far as the atmosphere is concerned it's a typical diner. Yo just have to remember one thing, it's a diner, not a fine dining experience. The soups are very good, the rice pudding is excellent and the breakfast foods are very good. I'm fussy on my eggs and they care how they come out of the kitchen. Burgers are big - grilled cheese done well and there are plenty of fries. My granddaughter who really isn't a big dessert eater raves over the carrot cake. I've ordered from here many times but finally sat down to eat inside today. The French toast was weak for starters. Like yes it was French toast but without the syrup it barely had taste. Ironically the regular wheat toast was good. The sausages were hitting but small. Eggs were good but not GREAT, The Taylor ham & egg and cheese sandwich was on point. Bacon was good, I personally don't like super crispy bacon so this was cooked just right. The home fries were a 7.. like crisp on top but the insides were a bit mushy for my liking. Sue, Mariolla, takes care of us and they are so pleasant, kind and always knows our orders for the 4 of us every time we come for breakfast. Loved everything about this diner: nostalgic interior, huge menu, huge portions and affordability. The variety in every section is fun and creative, like my Tel Aviv omelette with corned beef, pastrami, tomato and mozzarella cheese. They have nachos and rice as a side option, which I have been hard pressed to find in other diners. Waitstaff was attentive and pleasant, and definitely deserving of more than the 15% gratuity added. Please tip extra! Also, when considering this diner ahead of time, I noticed the menu photos were over 4 years old. I considered it a favor to everyone to photograph and post each and every menu page here, since they don't have a website either. Our server was friendly and patient, especially when I was interested in looking at the lunch menu at 10AM! Also, when I asked if it was an option to make french toast with brioche - he wasn't sure what brioche was but I understand. I settled for chocolate chip pancakes, which were good, but I also don't know what quality of pancakes to expect to from a diner. Same for the coffee. We also ordered the Tel Aviv Omelette (Corned Beef, Pastrami, Tomatoes, Onions & Melted Swiss Cheese) which was delicious and had a good balance of all the ingredients. Had dinner at the diner recently. It's been about a year since I've been back in the area. I knew the Menlo Park Diner was closed and was happy to see Metuchen Diner was up and running. I noticed that many of the young girls that were servers were no longer there (it was a weekday night). Also, the diner used to have a printed list of specials in addition to the menu items. I did notice a few specials on a small black board near the entrance. One of my favorites at the Menlo Park Diner was the roast Turkey dinner. I think I had ordered the turkey at Metuchen Diner a number of years ago and was not impressed. (It was pressed turkey slices.) Well, I decided to take a chance. I was very pleasently surprised! A large mound of white turkey meat on stuffing came out! It looked like it was freshly sliced off a large breast! It was really tasty and more than enough! I forgot to mention that a selection of soup is part of the dinner. Also, two sides come with the dinner. Of course I had mashed potatoes, gravy and cranbury sauce came with the dinner. The food came quickly, the price was fine. I would actually give a rating of 3.9, the food could have been a bit hotter, but that's it. I'll be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

Food was okay, the Turkey clubs and pancakes were as always very good. The meals we got on the senior menu were not good. The fish and meatloaf were dry and the meatloaf had a weird tasting spice on it. Our waitress was not at all friendly and did not seem to be interested in helping us in anyway, when I did ask, she was prompt in her response but then completely ignored us..we had to track her down for the bill as she did not return to our table. This place was mostly okay. I ordered a "Texas Burger" without fries, just coleslaw and pickle. I washed this down with a $3.50 iced tea. The burger was decently sized, but arrived without the Texas element (BBQ sauce). I didn't bother to ask and just ate the bacon cheeseburger as-is. It tasted good, but was incredibly greasy. It was dripping and completely soaked through both sides of the bun. The small cup of slaw was fine. I would not make any effort to drive here again. This place was absolutely nothing special. I could see from the instant that we walked in that they are severely understaffed, as the cashier is also the hostess. When we arrived (party of 2), the cashier was busy with a customer who was paying his bill, and we had to wait (needlessly) to be seated around 10 minutes or so. We were led to our table, and before we even had the chance to sit down, the server was on top of us, asking if we wanted something to drink. I ordered coffee, and my daughter ordered hot chocolate. The table was dirty, the floor unswept, the busboy had not put out any clean silverware for us. I had to ask for water and the silverware, along with extra napkins. While I am sure that our server was just trying to be efficient, the speed at which she was running around the restaurant made me feel like we were being rushed out the door. The food came out quickly, but I think that the whole "rush" vibe that I was getting totally contributed to my opinion of the taste/presentation/quality of the food. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It was completely unmemorable, and I will not be returning. In recent times, the borough of Metuchen has gotten a reputation for being a town where there are great restaurants, but this diner is not great. At best, it was just meh. read more
