The place looks a bit tired and run down but obviously it's popular since people kept coming. Our waitress was very sweet and accommodating. I got the waffle and asked if they could warm up the syrup and she was glad to do it. That always makes me happy since I don't like cold syrup on a hot waffle. Coffee was good too. We are traveling and wanted some good diner food, yelp had this one close to our hotel and the menu is big! We walked in and were immediately greeted and seated haha. Our waitress was very nice and the food came out relatively quick. We ordered French toast with eggs and sausage and the Chicken gyro platter, both of these were very good. My father and I got together to get breakfast and went to this convenient location. When I arrived I parked in the plaza parking lot. I walked in and was greeted. It is a local, hometown diner. We sat and Stephanie was our server and she was nice. I wanted the apple pancakes and my dad got one of the meal combos. When the apple pancakes came out, it was not what I expected. The apples and walnuts were cooked into the pancakes as opposed to it being on top like I am used to at other locations. I didn't want to send it back but didn't want to force myself either. I went with the short stack instead and that was ok. My dad said his pancakes and bacon was ok as well. The bill was super affordable and we had an ok experience. read more

I come to this place because I started a new job in a food DESERT! When I say that I mean that the options for dine in or take out are SCARCE. The diner is located in a parking lot of a strip mall so there is ample parking. I haven't dined in yet but there are always lots of seats available on the weekdays in the morning. The staff is so nice! Even when they are busy in person or on the phone, they make conversation and treat you kind. So far I have only ordered a BLT with avocado from this place, which you really can't mess up. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that the presentation/ construction of my sandwich has been hit or miss over the past 4 times I've ordered. Sometimes the avocado is sliced in SLICES.... And sometimes it's just sliced in half and I have to fix it to enjoy a bit of everything in each bite. If you follow me you know I love to take food pics, but I just haven't had a photo worthy BLTA yet. I order my bacon crispy and I appreciate that they don't use that as an opportunity to give me the burnt pieces! Overall, I'll be back a 5th time. read more

I've never written a review like this before but I just have to. I paid $44 dollars for this order and I'm just disappointed. Maybe this place is known for something else but I ordered the following: Chicken fingers and fries - it was okay , the bbq sauce was good... honey mustard was a little watery though Shrimp basket came with fries- oh my god the shrimp was so bland it tasted like nothing and they were stuck together when they were fried...so that's not very enjoyable.. it also came with Soup or salad I chose soup- the soup was so bland it tasted like those bland canned soups. I saw 1 chunk/piece of chicken and the noodle type was the one that looks like a big rice grain... it was rally lacking any flavor Also came with a desert and I chose bread pudding - just looks like 3 slices of whitebread moistened with something idk..horrible.. Crab cake - possibly the worse I've ever had in my life. I don't know what I was expecting but it was just imitation crab fried in some batter also so so bland no flavor at all. The Bus Stop has been a Carteret institution for as long as I can remember, many decades, at least. It's where, growing up in town, you had your first real diner experience. This is a big deal if you live in Jersey. lol. It's undergone a makeover, as it almost burned down quite a few years back, so the decor is newer. I loved the old style, green carpet with dark wood panelling, big vinyl bench seats & tables, & dark window shades. Real 70's stuff. lol. But, the new style is nice as well. It's more classic diner, with the chrome-rimmed tables, primary color schemes, and tile floors. Anyway, onto the food...Over the years, I've had just about everything on the menu, and with few complaints, I've always enjoyed my meals. The portions are plenty, the food is freshly cooked, and the desserts are big enough, that you'll probably take it home. You get your money's worth, and in a working-class town like Carteret, that's important. I've since moved out of town, and this last visit to the Bus Stop was a nostalgic break on the way to somewhere else. It's been at least 7 years, and in that time, there has been no loss of food or service quality. The waitstaff is always friendly, and most times, you probably know the person, so there's the ol' catch-up, and town gossip. The owner is friendly & professional, and any complaint, if you have one, is handled promptly, & with courtesy. I've seen him handle a few jerks over the years, and he keeps his cool. He's a genuine guy just looking to run a good business. And, that's what he's doing. If you're in Carteret, and looking for a good meal with decent prices, and maybe a little something to take home, The Bus Stop Diner should be your destination. However, if you're looking to get silly, go to the actual bus stop across the street, and get on the 116 out of town. This is still Carteret. It's not where you want to mess up. read more

Breakfast .... it was OK. Not my favorite home style breakfast. I wasn't looking for a gourmet breakfast. Just wanted basic breakfast food. My Italian omelette was ok. Nothing earth shattering. Home fries were cooked well done as requested but were dry and lacked flavor. Hubby ordered is extra soft eggs which were perfect. He like home fries Sausage was great diner quality. Pancakes were average quality. Rye bread was tasty. Coffee was ok. Service and atmosphere was great. Would try again. Over easy eggs will be my next try. read more

Early Super Bowl Sunday morning I got off Exit12 Carteret of The Jersey Turnpike. In a shopping center with a Shop Rite and Dollar Tree between them is The Bus Stop Diner. You have a counter where you can see the food being cooked or sit in a booth. I've always received quick service, With the number 2 breakfast special, decently pricEd at $8.95 you get coffee and orange juice. The coffee is from Coffee Associates. I had the 2 eggs over hard and it had plenty of bacon. The home fries where plentiful but could of been burnt a little bit. Good toast and plenty of coffee refills. No napkin dispenser and you only get one napkin. The bathrooms are clean. All in all a good experience for a quick stop off the turnpike. read more

Great little diner hidden in a plaza. Has the feel of a ma and pa family run restaurant / dinner. Lots of great breakfast options including Taylor ham (a new one for me). Lunch 7/26/16 We got off at the wrong exit on the NJP and found a real jem of a diner in a nondescript strip mall. The restaurant facade in no way catches your eye, with just a plain sign, and double doors, but the minute you walk in you can tell this is not your run of the mill hash joint. As soon as we sat down we were given menus by our waitress; she was old school, the kind of server that makes you feel right at home. Of the four soups of the day; cream of potato, chicken noodle, lentil, and onion my lovely and I chose lentil, and chicken noodle respectively. The lentil soup was tasty but the real star was the chicken noodle; the savory chicken broth was paired with tender pieces of chicken, carrots, and pasta stars with the stars just the right consistency, not mushy at all. For lunch we chose the patty melt, and the mezzelone sandwich which included eggplant, onions, tomato, and mozzarella. Both sandwiches were tasty, the mezzelone (one of the lunch specials), came with soup, fries, and desert. The coleslaw served with both sandwiches was homemade and delicious. The only downside was that the french fries were somewhat on the greasy side. The fries could have kept this review at three stars but the waitress service pushed it over to four. When our server gave us the selection for desert my dear declined the offerings, the waitress (sorry I didn't get her name), but she was a lovely lady with blond hair), suggested taking some fresh fruit salad to go. A very welcome treat. I will definitely be back for another visit since we frequent NYC, it is only one exit past the Garden State Parkway entrance and well worth the time. read more

I basically grew up in Carteret and anyone who is from here knows that the Bus Stop is a town staple. Conveniently located and food that is always reliably good. Walking in you always see locals and friendly faces. Their breakfast is awesome, and I also love some of their dinners such as chicken & eggplant parm. Great sandwiches too like the meatball sub and chicken parm sandwich. My friends and I used to come here at least once a week for a cheap bite to eat. One of my favorite things is the little plate of muffins and rolls they put on the table for guests. Those little muffins are just so good! The staff and owner and really nice and welcoming as well. Tucked inside a Carteret strip mall not far from Rt. 1, Bus Stop offers the trademark diner requirements: big portions, low prices, huge menu, solid breakfast. My breakfast of over easy egg and one French toast (great combination - I highly recommend it) came out great but I really couldn't get myself amped about this place. Our server wasn't especially pleasant, but by no means rude or bad... just busy. While I got a kick out of the bus image on the wall helping the "bus stop feel" a bit truer, the interior seemed somewhere between hospital-antiseptic and just worn. The space is huge but divided left side / right side around the center serving station. If you have a large group of people, there's definitely space for you. Also a few of your classic counter seats available if that's your thing. If a friend wanted to go back to Bus Stop, I would. If flying solo, I'll search for more charm and warmth at my next stop. read more
