My first time here. What a fantastic experience! The menu is pretty extensive in that there are so many great things, it's hard to decide. I landed on the tuna appetizer and the surf and turf with a five oz filet (cooked perfectly) with a crab cake and salmon Mac and cheese, all served with a great bread service and incredible Dipping sauce and of course fine libations! It had been awhile since I had been here. They had remodeled and there are a few side rooms and an outdoor covered/heated patio. We started out with the calamari which was delicious and the flash fried spinach with just the right touch of garlic. Our waitress was so nice and attentive without hovering. I had called earlier in the day to inquire about gluten free options and they said they were willing to work with us on options and that they had a manager with celiac disease, so they are aware of the need to avoid cross contamination. There were a few items with marinades or sauces that weren't available in gluten free, but there were several choices to be had. I had the Molina-crab cake was the favorite part for me; the lobster Mac and cheese was not what I expected. My GF hubby had the pork chop and wished it had more sauerkraut on it but he really liked it. We had two birthdays in our crowd and they brought out two desserts of a cake/cookie/whipped cream concoction in a flour pot. Tasty! This was one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. I can totally see why it won a spot on the best of 417 list. First of all, our service was top notch. Our server was really attentive, but not annoying. Very pleasant. Our food came out at a nice pace as well. For appetizer, we had two Oyster Rockefellers. You can order these by the each, so that was nice. I am not an oyster eater. In fact, I'm kind of scared of the thought of them. However, these were baked, not raw, so we got two so I could try one without spending a fortune. And I swear, these were AMAZING. Baked with spinach, pancetta, savory bread crumbs and topped with a bit of bearnaise. Soooo good! My only regret was that we only ordered two. Also had the lobster and shrimp spring rolls. They came served with a sour grape sauce. The roll was really crispy and good. However, the sauce truly is pretty sour, so beware. A little bit goes a long way. Dinner was the "chicken and dumplings", which was actually a stuffed chicken roll and gnocchi in a creamy pesto sauce. Everything was cooked perfectly, and I think the gnocchi was homemade. My husband had the special of the night, soft shell crab. He said it was done very well. We asked to substitute the mashed potato side with the asiago and bacon risotto and they did with no problem. The risotto was flavorful, but it was not cooked in the true risotto style. Too tight, needed to be more creamy. This was mostly a sticky rice. However, it was still tasty and if it was on my plate I probably would have eaten the whole thing. Dessert was awesome as we expected. I had the Sad Sasha, which was a twist on a strawberry shortcake but you have to be 21 to order as the whipped cream, strawberries and pound cake all had an alcohol component. Love. This restaurant showed me a side of fine dining that I never knew. When you walk in you are greeted by a hostess that is immaculate. When you sit down your waiter beckons to your call. If all that doesn't entice you then let me tell you that any item on the menu will become your new favorite dish. I have travelled all over the world and this was the best lamb chop I had ever had. It was classy and perfectly cooked and seasoned. I even had the healthy sides that were the most delicious healthy options ever. Finally the dessert tops it all off with a bow. I had the champagne cakes and let me tell you that you will melt in your chair eating this. Finally the girls toilets are heated! Talk about treating your guests. I've dined at this spot a few times and keep coming back so that alone is indication I believe the Metropolitan Grill does a good job, they know how to mix drinks, serve a nice wine list and prepare food well. We had a group on a Monday that enjoyed an hour of cocktails before settling in for dinner. The restaurant has several private rooms that are available with advance reservations, from groups of 8-10 and larger. I'm going to get our bar servers name incorrect here, Jay? but he was wonderful and attentive. Stacey served us our dinner and again did a great job. Starter Food. Flash fried spinach was done well. Crab cakes were okay, just ok. Calamari was spicy and ample in the order size. Our dinner entrees included filets prepared well, the sea bass I understand was very good. I received a gift card for this place so myself and my wife tried it out. The atmosphere was rather stuck up and snooty. Although much of that seemed to come from the dinners and only around 40 percent from the restaurant itself. It seems like a place that Fraser crane would be dying to eat at. Our food was great but our service was very poor! We had a large group on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was busy but not swamped. Here are a couple of examples.... 1. Three people ordered coffee and it didn't arrive. Add that to the fact that other people in our group did get coffee. 2. They forgot half of our desserts. They eventually did bring them. We chose this restaurant based upon some reviews and the fact that it was close to our hotel. Many reviews were excellent but we might have been there on a "bad night". Both our dinners could have been quite good but were instead, disappointing due to fixable errors in the kitchen. Some examples follow: 1. The menu is very difficult to understand because each dish has a cutesy name which in no way describes the dish. It is adolescent and has no place in a fine dining venue. Who has the interest and time to read every dish's explanation on a menu when a few words would describe the dish better? 2. The server was nice but she didn't know the menu. For instance I ordered the Dr. Sharp (better known as Chicken Parmesan) which she said came on a bed of linguine. When it arrived, it was rigatoni. The dish could have been quite good but someone please tell the cooks to serve a hot dish on a warmed plate. The plate was cold. My pasta was cold as a result. 3. My wife ordered the "Bearisto Chicken". A silly name for a piece of airline chicken which was supposed to arrive with a "Fire roasted corn and tomato salsa and topped with corn flour dusted Jicama fries." Instead, there were no jicama fries and a gloppy white sauce covering the dish instead of the listed salsa. Beware. This restaurant seems to think cutesy is cool and instead feels juvenile, especially at the high prices they charge. There's promise here but last night was a bust caused by server and kitchen errors. I think the focus should change starting with the menu and continue by teaching servers about the dishes. I've been here a couple times and both times it was great. The food was fresh and tasted amazing. The first time I went we sat in the front of the house and we all loved our food. Our server was ok the first time. I went again tonight and we had a party room in the back and it was relaxing. I want to say the ambience of the restaurant has soft lighting, a little noisy in the main dining room but tolerable. Music was 90s-00s pop/rnb tonight. Didn't really care much for the music choice. The dress code is business/casual. The service tonight was great. She was attentive. It is a fine dining restaurant so it is a bit pricey if you're on a budget. I was in the Springfield/Branson area entertaining clients and decided to dine at the Metropolitan Grill due to the great reviews this restaurant received from Yelp patrons. The night started off with our waitress who was more interested in talking to her colleagues than was in actually providing great service. We had to ask multiple times for things like bread, butter, water and our salads that took 25 minutes to arrive after ordering. The topper was when I'd ordered the Australian lamb chops medium rare and they arrived to the table medium well. Total time from initial food order to entrees being delivered, 70 minutes for a party of two. Metropolitan Grill did not deliver with their entrees or service. On the whole, the experience did not live up the hype of previous reviews. read more

One word: obsessed. I keep coming back to this place because there is honestly not a single bad dish on the menu. And trust me, I've tried every single one several times. My favorites are the flash-fried spinach, the baked brie and the "Yoakam" steak tips. To die for! Just make sure you order half the spinach portion. If you get the whole order, the spinach tends to be a bit soggy instead of deliciously crispy and garlicky. Last night I decided it was past time to check it out. We got there about 7:30, right in time to realize that the High School LPA's were that night, and there would be a wait. After a short time, the hostess came to seat us and we ordered drinks along with calamari as an appetizer. My date's fillet with a cream sauce was amazing (I had to try it) as was my steak along with the potatoes they came with. Portions were huge and quality was superb. Found Metropolitan Grill on Yelp, checked Sunday hours (no problem), called to make reservation (no different indication), drove the 15 miles to the restaurant, and guess what? It's apparently closed on Sundays! The website says they are open on Sunday, their front door says they have Sunday dinner hours, yet the place was most definitely closed. Maitre'd Lindsay and server Elizabeth made us feel like regulars, and they steered us to the flash fried spinach appetizer which was both light & full of flavor supplemented by the Shaw-Some Two-Some (pastry w/cheeses, chicken, prosciutto, garlic). Off to a great start. For entrees we had Ahi Tuna/Scallops and a small Filet Mignon with sides of butternut squash/prosciutto risotto & smoked Gouda mash. Great preparation + photo-worthy presentation + compatible wines = OMG good. For dessert we had an apple dumpling w/dark rum praline cream sauce and excellent coffee to top off a meal that couldn't be beat. If you are in Springfield, go. I've been to Metro several times the last 4-5 years and the service and food has been wonderful. However, during my last visit, while having a business dinner, I had the worst experience I've had at a restaurant in my life. And for background, I am a sales management professional, I cover four states and I've eaten at several high-end restaurants in my lifetime with many clients, family and friends. Last Wednesday, I ordered the sous-vide New York strip. On the menu, the steak was supposed to be cooked at 136° (slightly under medium). However, when I cut into my steak and noticed it was well done, medium well plus at best. Not wanting to send the food back, I tried to eat it. But the more I cut into the meat, the harder it became to eat because it was so chewy. At this time, I let the waitress know that I would like to return the meat, but I did not want an entire steak, I just want to have a steak cooked properly. In fact, the only reason I returned the steak was because one of the people I was with, a regular at Metro, said the owner would want to know that a new item on the menu was not cooked properly. The waitress returned with the new steak. Upon looking at the steak, it was obvious that the steak was barely cooked on either side and look like raw tuna in the middle. At this point, I was pretty frustrated and asked the waitress to get me a salad so that I could leave the restaurant immediately. Also at this point, I saw the owner of the restaurant, Pat, looking at the entire interaction I had with the waitress. She then walked up to him and apparently told him what I said about the under cooked steak. He then proceeded to yell at me from the bar area and insinuate I didn't know what a good steak was. He then stared at me while he cut into the steak and ate it as he told me how good it was to him. And for some reason, he was extremely agitated throughout the interaction. I would venture to say if my name was Clay or Bob instead of Carlos, this may not have happened. But that's purely conjecture on my part. As a professional and a customer, I never expect this type of treatment. And for that reason, I will never give another penny to this establishment. read more

Don't let the exterior fool you. The Metropolitan Grill is located in a strip center. It has a neon sign using script lettering and there are pictures of movie stars on the windows. A bit kitschy. But the inside is very different. Elegant, low-light with an atmosphere of a NYC fine dining restaurant. A wonderful wine list with much to choose from in each varietal. We had three appetizers: the flash-fried spinach (light and delicious), the crab cakes (great taste, if a bit small), and the seared ahi tuna (very rare with a hint of wasabi and soy...nice). My wife had the Cadillac Cut filet mignon (very well prepared, cut it with a butter knife), I had the C. Wells filet (while the demi-glaze was delicious, I wish I'd gotten the Cadillac filet because the way they cook their filets, a sauce of any kind is not needed). My daughters got the Molina and a fish special respectively. Each were wonderful. A wonderful meal with great service in an elegant atmosphere. However, be prepared to open your wallet, since the whole affair is a bit pricey. read more

Yeah, it would score two or three stars if one said a restaurant like The French Laundry or Tru is the benchmark. But, there's no place like that in Springfield. Prices are on the high end for Springfield, but still reasonable. The service is always over the top. If he's available, I highly recommend having Reed as your server. He's the best at metro and probably the best in SW Miasouri. The menu changes frequently but the staples are maintained. The best Caesar salad in Spfd. Oh my goodness I was in town on business and tried this place. Our waiter Greg was so awesome. The decor was nice. The ladies' bathroom (handicap stall) had a heated seat and other deluxe features I've never seen before. All that aside the real star was the food. The menu was chock full of interesting creative enticing options. It was so hard to choose. The food did not disappoint. Outstanding appetizers and entrees. I was stuffed and planned to skip dessert but the menu was just too tempting. Had one of the most delicious cheese cakes every. It was amazing in flavor and texture. I would have paid more for such a delightful meal but the total bill was more modest than I would have expected for such a fine meal. Loved everything about this place. Everything was great. The girl at the Residence Inn recommended. You never see a red Conundrum on the wine list ... this made me happy from the jump. My husbands martini was perfect. The ahi appetizer was superb. We had the sea bass and rib eye. The sea bass was perfect. The ribeye was a bit over cooked and a little tough ... no marble throughout, but it was still good. I dont post often because if you come close to providing my money's worth then I'm satisfied. Well they missed by a mile. Let me start by saying it took over 2 1/2 hours for dinner. We reserved a room for 20, 2 weeks prior to the meal. We confirmed the exact count 23 three days before the meal. We were served by only one server. It took 1hr and 15min to get the salads and 10min to get them to everyone. It took another hour to get the main course and the desert was another 15 min. By this time we had talked to the manager more than once. Talking to him was a compleate waste. If you enjoy wedding food you will love this place. Served warm at best they would not let us order off the menu and had most of the offerings covered in gravy to hide the food.
