One of the best eggs benedict I've ever had. I went on a Sunday during brunch, so I expected a wait time. The wait wasn't too bad as it was just 30 minutes despite them being so busy. Probably my favorite diner. I haven't gotten anything I didn't thoroughly enjoy. My favorite is the eggs Benedict San Francisco. I always ask for my hashbrowns burnt and they don't really burn them but I understand because that's an unusual request. It's not usually healthy [there are some healthy options though you can get egg whites, veggies etc] but a great place to splurge once in a while. They have some unique options- I split the pound cake French toast with a friend once and it was delicious. There's usually a wait on the weekends, but it's very understandable why! read more

If you plan on coming here on the weekend, plan to wait a bit possibly 30 minutes or more. While you wait they have a complimentary coffee station. The wait staff is amiable. If you're a first time customer they'll present you with a free stack of pancakes. While there I ordered the chicken and waffles with strawberry butter. The waffles was delicious, but the chicken tasted a little over done. They thing that'll continue to make patrons come back is it's festive atmosphere. read more

This location is a little subpar compared to the original in Jacksonville. We ordered chicken and waffles. The waffle was tasty as usual. Their strawberry butter was not totally mixed and the chunks of strawberry were too large, so it wasn't as smooth as it should be. The chicken breast was burnt - likely clearly black on the ribs. I'm not sure how it got through the window to be honest. It was promptly replaced without question. Unfortunately, the chicken was too salty. I initially thought it was the breading... but nope it's the meat. It was brined too long and probably messed up several whole or half chickens. I know they know what to do to resolve the issues we had which is why I rating it 3 stars, but I was a little disappointed. read more

Thanks to the management for their quick response. Here is the issue. When we were settled in at a table and there were and we were clearly 6' from every one. The two tables along side us were empty. Then the host sat a couple right at the next table (a 2-top) though one was avaialbe over 6 feet away. But then it was a 4-top. And squeezing people in overrode Covid safety. It was half full when we enter and then became easily full. No management decision to follow CDC guidelines. read more

Be prepared to wait. This place is poppin'! Gainesville has finally got a nice diner and it is great. The food is delicious and the service is pretty fast for how packed they are. I was impressed at our waiter, he did not let us reach the bottom of our drinks, which is a problem I tend to run into. He was very attentive, and I greatly appreciate that. If you are to try this place for the first time and are not prepared to wait in line, I recommend avoiding the busy breakfast hours on weekends. The food is just as great for lunch or dinner or evening snack. I have yet to try the chicken and waffles, but I have heard great reviews on it, so that's the next thing on my list to try! read more

It was an awesome little joint. Spacious, they are very customer friendly. They have a outside sitting area. Very nice. Today was grand opening so as you walked in you were greeted by many and they had candy too. Yum! :) Sitting area was perfect. Booths, tables, even party tables. I want to say they have a little bar section. Can't remember. I just know the kitchen put you in the mind of steak and shake. The setting a little only it's in the corner. I met the whole staff which was good, you get to see who is running the joint. I will say much could have been done better but it's their first day so I wasn't mad or irritated or anything. I didn't have very high expectations for this place (no offense, but it is a diner in Gainesville, Florida...), but ended up being super impressed. This is probably the best diner I have ever been to, and I really want to travel to Gainesville again so I can eat here once more! The menu is vast, with an amazing array of breakfast foods. Several people at my table ordered the Chicken and Waffles (literally half an entire chicken, so good luck finishing it!). The chicken was perfectly crispy and seasoned, and it came with a spicy maple syrup and strawberry butter. I really wanted to come back the next morning to order this myself. I has the Shrimp and Grits and was blown out of this world. WOW, the portion of shrimp was incredibly generous, and the sauce was from another world. The portions were huge but I could really not bear to leave any on my plate -- it was /that/ good. The staff was very accomodating. We had a group of over 15 people, and they arranged a table for us (without a reservation on the weekend) and even gave us split checks. read more

Always impressed at what this establishment does. Often times, you do not get AWESOME food, AWESOME service, and AWESOME turn-around time - kind of like a triple threat! Well, Metro does all three. We were amazed at their Fried Green Tomatoes Egg Benedict, Chicken & Waffles with strawberry butter (makes it!), Yohala (gotta see it to believe it), and Pecan Waffles, as well as the more traditional dishes like corn beef hash, hash browns, etc. Metro is a rockstar of breakfast/brunch affairs, and a place you have to try when you are in Gainesville. Be ready for HUGE portion sizes, to match your appetite. I would recommend this restaurant after fasting for a day or two...you will recover in a jiffy! read more

History

Established in 1992.

Since the building's humble beginnings in 1938 and its revival as Metro Diner in 1992, Jacksonville's favorite place for breakfast has been serving satisfied guests for nearly 25 years. In 2000, master chef Mark Davoli and family took over and elevated the menu to include innovative new dishes created from local ingredients. Along with culinary creativity, the Davoli family brought more than 80 years of combined restaurant experience to Metro Diner. Metro Diner may not be the type of place where you'd expect contemporary culinary techniques, a commitment to creating dishes from scratch, an award-winning presentation, unique recipes and imaginative twists on old classics, but it is. It's that type of place because we cook with heart. We cook for the love of food.

I prefer inside, as I'm a people watcher and I love to see "the machine" work when I'm dining. The crew is always very fun and kind. I admire how well the training seems to be. The food is just healthy, simple and done right. They use some actual imagination and ingenuity while still maintaining a scratch kitchen and not completely going crazy. I admire this. It's not easy. Produce is a gamble daily. Meat prices are insane. Afternoon does not compromise. I never needed anything more than a blood orange mimosa and avocado toast, maybe the occasional Dutch baby or pasty. However, the mystery, mystique, whimsy and steadfast "fresh to death" food stance will make you want to try new things here. I am a vegetarian, but more than that I'm picky and they have always had more than enough delectable options. I was happy with brunch... and now I'm elated and estatic about the new dinner service. I've visited twice for "After Dark" and it was exceptional. It has some real creativity without sacrificing your health. I'm a fanatic. Please give them a visit and try something new. Life is too short to skip meals at Afternoon! I love them and you will too. Not many spots in Gainesville cook food that is good for you to eat daily. They also brew coffee and they are in a pretty fun neighborhood. Across from Cypress & Grove Brewery. Same parking lot as Serendipity & Working Food. It's the Entertainment District so you can grab a cocktail and walk your dog home! I don't get paid for reviews (yet) :)

We were seated outside, & it was a lovely day. I got the Cheddar & Chive Scone ($5, on their seasonal menu), & I really liked it! It was baked perfectly to be crispy on the outside & soft & doughy on the inside. I also got the Dutch Baby, because I was intrigued by how unique it sounded. I enjoyed it! It's described as an oven-baked pancake, & it has thinner edges & it's really soft in the middle; a bread pudding type of consistency. The seasonal toppings they used this day were caramelized apple pieces & a light glaze, & I thought both of those elements worked well with it. They weren't overpoweringly sweet, which I was a little concerned about at first. The portion was good for the $14 price; I took a bit of it home as leftovers. My friends, who both got The Big Break, thought the scrambled eggs were soft & well-seasoned, with a higher quality taste than a typical diner. The bacon is cured in-house & was crispy & delicious. My only gripe with the experience was how long it took to get our food. From the time we ordered to the time we received it, it'd been 40-45 minutes. Since it didn't seem very busy, this seemed excessively long. Overall, lovely place, reasonable prices, good food. I recommend it!

Do not be fooled- call Geico or any other company to purchase Homeowners insurance. Mr. Darr use to talk directly to the customers and you felt like you had an advocate but now a bunch of college graduates run the office and have no human feelings just want to sell insurance. We filed a claim with Southern Fidelity Insurance Company which we purchased through the Darr Agency approximately 16 years ago. I don't ever remember filing a claim but before Christmas of 2015 we filed a claim to have our roof replaced because of damages that occurred November, 2014. A storm came through (wind) and tore up over half of the shingles. The policy does state that you make a report immediately but because we were going thrugh foreclosure and then a modification, we did not have the roof repaired. After getting our mortgage straighten out, we decided to file the claim to get the roof replaced. We found out from some 25 year old adjuster with Southern Fidelity that he was not recommending the repairs or replacement because we did not report the damages in a timely manner. We agree with them but we tried to make them understand that we were going through foreclosure and wasn't concerned with getting the roof fixed for the mortgage company and their new tenants on our dime. Since it is still our home and we have After over 15 years of paying $3,082 or more a year for home owner's insurance, this insurance company is denying our claim. When thi policy is up in June, I plan to cancel and allow the mortgage company to carry the coverage since it is still their house. I will not pay these crooks another penny. For you newcomers, go ahead and brag but I hope you don't have a reason to file a claim. No other insurance company will cover this house with insurance until we replace this roof. It is very obvious that d any major issues with our roof but after that storm, we have had tarps covering the damage. We did not go up on the roof and tear it up ourselves and since we have paid them $46,200 or more in insutance, they could spend less than $10,000 and replace our roof. i called Darr Schackow and had an encounter with an uncaring salary seeker, with an ugly attitude. She said, your insurance is paid up to the June and so just let me know when you want to cancel..CANCELLATION PENDING BUT CERTAIN!!!!!! No more Darr Schachow for me. read more

Unfortunate experience, very disappointing. My wife and I both ordered the classic eggs Benedict, which we've had before and was excellent the last time we ordered this dish. This time, however, the hollandaise sauce was completely broken. Half of the plate was dripping in thick oil, and was practically inedible. The only reason I'm giving this review two stars instead of one is because the hash browns were cooked properly. Our waitress never once asked us how our meal was tasting or if anything was wrong, even though I paid the bill leaving over half of the food still on my plate. The wait staff needs to be trained well enough to recognize when a dish has been cooked improperly, and should refuse to serve it to the customer. I realize hollandaise sauce can be difficult for an inexperienced chef, but when you have four Benedict meals on your menu, there's just no excuse for not knowing how to prepare it. My guess is that the better chefs work on the weekends and the less experienced ones during the week. Our last, and probably final, visit was yesterday. read more

During my recent visit to Metro Restaurant, I had the pleasure of trying their chicken and waffles dish, and I must say, it was absolutely amazing. The presentation of the dish was visually appealing, with a golden, crispy chicken sitting atop a fluffy waffle. The portion size was generous, ensuring that I left feeling satisfied and content. The chicken itself was cooked to perfection, with a crunchy exterior and juicy, tender meat on the inside. The waffle was equally impressive. It was light and fluffy, with a slight crispness on the outside. The combination of the savory chicken and the sweet waffle created a delightful contrast of flavors that worked harmoniously together. Overall, I highly recommend trying Metro Restaurant. Whether you're a fan of classic comfort food or looking to try something new and delicious, this dish is sure to satisfy your cravings. read more

Tonight, for our anniversary, my girlfriend and I went to try the metro diner at my suggestion. Preemptive thank-you! We had an amazing experience. Promptly seated, friendly knowledgable service with Myra, the food arrived quickly and everything was hot and delicious! My girlfriend ordered the Vortex Burger at Myra's suggestion and she was not disappointed; it was juicy and full of flavor. My steak and eggs were cooked perfectly, and fried eggs and ribeyes aren't the easiest item on any menu. Lastly and best of all, the bill was modest, which gave us more freedom to reward Myra's great service! Thank you for a wonderful dining experience! read more

Our experience at this restaurant was fantastic! Darby, our server, impressed us with her politeness and knowledge. We were promptly seated, and she remained attentive throughout our meal. I opted for the Spicy Honey Chicken and Biscuit, offering delightful flavors, though be prepared for a slightly sticky sandwich. Overall, I would rate it 4/5. Amy chose the Fruity Waffle, enjoyable but lacked a bit in blueberry flavor. Nevertheless, she gave it a solid 5/5. The side of hash browns was cooked to perfection--crispy on the outside and wonderfully meaty on the inside. Would I dine here again? Absolutely! I highly recommend it. read more

Great experience, the servers are really good. However if you are a foodie, the food seems like it should be amazing but somehow falls a tad short. The chicken for the chicken and waffles (HUGE portions by the way) was more soggy than crispy, and the fried portion seemed to not be fresh. Almost as thought the frying oil had not been changed in a while so you get a buildup of burnt taste inside the chicken. The interior is really cool, very much a diner. This is the 3rd time I have come and it is always been for breakfast, maybe next time I will branch out and see if lunch and dinner are good. read more
