This is a dinner that was on diners , drives- ins and dives . And I have eaten at the one in Saint Augustine which is pretty good. This one is just OK. I feel like the whole place just needs a good bath. The club sandwich was really loaded with meat and cheeses but I feel that a nice sourdough would make it more special. What can I say about Metro Diner? I've been there to eat about a dozen times over the years, my mother and son love it-- but I find the food mediocre and often disappointing. I really want to love it like my family does. The atmosphere is fun and kitschy, and the service is always great. It looks and feels like an old 50s diner. What I have learned over time is: now that I've found a few menu items I like, *never* deviate from that short list. But I don't always listen to myself, unfortunately. My adventurous spirit is rarely rewarded at Metro Diner. The other evening, I decided to try a waffle with a side of bacon and home fries-- what could go wrong? The waffle was so disappointing, especially for the price. It was soggy, zero crispness to it. I picked it up, and it was floppy. The bacon was well-cooked, but the home fries were not to my liking at all, unlike any home fries I've ever had. They are almost black in color, and I'm not sure why. That's just how they look. I didn't send them back because they were clearly made properly. I just didn't like them. I should have listened to my inner voice that repeatedly urged me to order what I've found to be the best thing on the menu: the grilled 3-cheese sandwich. No, I'm not kidding, and it really is an above average grilled cheese. I order it with tomato and sometimes bacon, ask for my fries to made into the appetizer cheese fries with ranch for an upcharge, and I leave satisfied. But talk about CALORIES. I just really wanted breakfast the other evening and screwed up. (Beware of anything Benedict on that menu btw) Other miscellaneous items I've liked on the menu: the fried chicken sandwich (tall, so a bit difficult to eat!), the cinnamon swirl pancakes (basically dessert), and though it's been a while, I recall the fish and chips were pretty good. Went here for brunch and overall it was an okay experience! This place is very popular in Gainesville so we had to wait for a while to get seated since it was also a weekend. We got a lot of their brunch items like eggs Benedict, pancakes, chicken and waffles, as well as mimosas and a Bloody Mary. The food was alright, not great but not bad either. Nothing really stood out. The drinks were bad in my opinion, especially the Bloody Mary. It was incredibly salty and seemed to be only tomato juice. I didn't mind the average food to be quite honest since the place is very decently priced and the portions seem great for the price. Metro diner is one of the most popular brunch spots in Gainesville. If you come here on a weekend for bunch, expect to wait at least 30 minutes for a table. Although everyone else seems to LOVE Metro Diner, I don't think it's the best. Don't get me wrong, I don't have an issue with the food here, but I don't think it's as great as everyone hypes it up to be. I've come here too many times to count thanks to my friends who are obsessed with Metro Diner, but I've never had a dish that was absolutely amazing. A few popular dishes I've seen many people order include the fruity waffle, chicken biscuit, and chicken & waffles. I've had all of these dishes before and the dishes aren't bad, but they aren't great. The fruity waffle is a waffle with some fruit and sugar on top. The chicken and waffles are average. I think the chicken biscuit is a decent dish. It's not enough food to be an entire meal, but it's a good add-on to a dish that won't fill you up. The service here is average. The servers are always very kind, but the food usually takes a while to come out. Overall, Metro Diner is a decent brunch place. It has average food, but it's nothing special. Now i hadn't taken a single bite before the original waitress comes back with the check and says "stay as long as you like." A little weird, but still no big deal. But she keeps coming back ans saying "Stay as long as you like." I've still got most of my food, and still eating when she comes back and asks if i need a box. I'm literally eating when she asks this. It was weird. I honestly coukldn't have been there more than a half hour. Start to finish. It's important to be clear- the waitress didn't seem rude, but they all but asked me to leave. The Food: Hash browns where hot, eggs cold, same plate. How does that even happen? I ordered The Bissell Breakfast and the food came out very quickly. However, it wasn't worth it. The eggs tasted like some flavorless powdery concoction. The cheese on the grits was like a tablespoon of shredded cheese, not enough. The grits were bland, I had to add butter and salt. One of my pancakes was burnt and they put that one under the properly cooked pancake. The biscuit was fluffy on the inside but crispy outside, I didn't like that combination. The bacon was the only thing that tasted good. For the price I paid, I was better off going to Waffle House. The hostess and waitress friendly and polite. The food itself, wasn't to my liking. I roll by this place so many times, and I hear such good things... well, today was the day that I hit the brakes on 34th st! I was in the mood for a burger and fries, and decided on Metro, because I had been meaning to stop and try them out. I called in my order, and the lady said my order would be ready in ten minutes!! Wow! When I picked it up, the server said they were commenting in the kitchen on how good my burger looked. I drew this in as hype and paid no mind to it. My burger was ready, and I paid for it right by the door. It was an easy pickup! My goodness that burger was sooo good!!! The swiss cheese had melted into the mushrooms to hold them together, and the two thick bacon strips brought that flavor to the bank! Wow! It was one of those burgers, where you finish everything but two bites, and save the rest for later. This time, later was about 7 minutes!! So so happy I found this place on an extremely busy weekend morning in Gainesville. I looked on my trusted yelp app and sure enough it had good reviews so I decided to check it out. There was a line when we got there but the wait took about seven minutes. we were seated outside where they have a covered outdoor seating so not bad at all. Standard American breakfast available omelette, pancakes, bagels, etc. and plenty of choices for sides; everything tasted great and service was exceptional! Shout out to our server I believe his name was Brandon he was making sure we were OK at all times refilled out waters when needed and made sure his customers were happy. Last night my friend and I were hungry for some comfort food. We usually go out to dinner on Friday nights, but with everything going on with the COVID-19 we had to just order in. We decided to order online and get pick-up. We got the buy one, get one fried chicken dinner and the buy one, get one meatloaf platter. We got so much food, we will be eating this for several days and it was so so good! I ordered online through Metro Diner's website. It was super easy. I noticed they had the specials and it was great. I made the order and paid for it online. The only thing I would say is the website where you order does not give you a pick up time. So after about 15 minutes I drove to the restaurant and picked up my food. They also offer delivery through door dash. When I arrived at the restaurant it was weird seeing all the chairs on the tables. You can tell they have moved to fully take-out. The place was pretty busy which was really nice to see. They only had 1 girl who was answering the phones and bagging the food. She was swamped. When I finally got home it was time to feast. The fried chicken was delicious and you get a half of a chicken so a leg, thigh, wing, and breast. It came with a dinner roll, mixed veggie and mashed potatoes with gravy. It was a ton of food. The meatloaf dinner was 2 large pieces of meatloaf with gravy on top, mashed potatoes and gravy and broccoli. The only thing I would change is the meatloaf had very little gravy on it. But I am sure if they put to much it would have been a mess. The chicken came with a maple syrup and hot sauce dip which was phenomenal. I know everyone mostly goes to Metro for their favorite breakfast items, but I highly recommend it for dinner foods as well. We went out of our way on a trip home from Orlando to stop in at Metro diner because my husband raved about the chicken and waffles. We had a nice variety of dishes, from the famous chicken and waffles, pancakes, potato soup, spicy chicken biscuit, and a cheeseburger. Everything was delicious, although my daughter didn't love her cheeseburger because the bun was buttered and it tasted greasy to her. Once we ordered the food came quickly, and everything was hot and fresh and the service was fantastic. After Orlando, the prices were such a refreshing relief! I would definitely come back! We had a party of 8 and had to wait a bit when we arrived. This was my only complaint about the whole visit. Since we had a big group, I tried to use the online wait list about every 15-20 minutes starting hours before we arrived to make sure we could give the restaurant a heads up and shorten our wait time. The website always showed "No wait, come on in" and the waitlist wasn't even clickable because it showed no wait. When we arrived, we found that the hostess didn't even know they have an online wait list and that if I had just called, they would have been able to put a table for us. Since we didn't call ahead, we had a close to 30 min wait. This was a bummer because we were traveling and wanted to get on the road, but not the end of the world. The hostess was very nice about it and it was not her or anyone else in the restaurant's fault, but "corporate" should probably make sure the wait list works if they plan to have one. Since this was not the fault of the restaurant itself and more of the website, I didn't take any stars for that. They handled our wait beautifully and checked in often to tell us what they were doing to help get us seated. read more

Consistency is key and I must say that metro diner is incredibly consistent in their food. I have been here on several occasions, either sober, "stimulated", or hungover and my experiences have always been pleasurable. The servers are always pretty attentive and I have never had an issue even with a complex order or with any dietary restrictions. I have lost count of how many things I've tried on the menu so I cannot recommend one specific thing more than anything else but I will say even if if you blindly take your server's recommendation you'll leave happy. I would give it another star, if I noticed two more things one if the bathroom was cleaner which I have seen on clean on several accounts and if the tables were a little bit cleaner as well I've had sticky menus several times and it kind of dampened the mood a little. read more

Good drive away from home, but nevertheless the wife and I decided to get takeout from Metro once again. Wasn't disappointed! Ordered a Swiss mushroom burger (medium) with onion rings, and fish and chips, with sides including slaw, mac 'n cheese, and mashed potatoes with gravy. Despite my bad decision to order close to lunchtime, on a Friday, I Road Warrior'd my way through fairly heavy traffic, got our food, and arrived home. Burger was perfectly cooked. The fish and chips were solid, but I'm afraid the Haile Bistro at present outdoes them for both the size of their fish serving and its flavor. Step up! Slaw was decent, with regular and red cabbage and not an overwhelming amount of mayo-based dressing. Mashed potatoes were clearly homemade and not flakes, and the chef appears to raise the bar a notch and season the gravy with cumin on top of extra sage, perhaps Latino influence? My husband and I used to have a dog that would wake us up super early in the morning. So on weekends we would always go to Metro Diner because we were awake and they would cook us breakfast. We've been back even though we don't have our dog anymore. We were there on Saturday morning to grab some grub before heading out to various things we were going to do. I usually get the waffle. Metro's waffle is all things delicious. It's usually fluffy and perfectly done. It's hard to get waffles anywhere else because I know they just won't compare to Metro's. I can't give Metro 5 stars because of the floors. I know it seems downright silly but I hate walking in there feeling like any minute I'm going to slip and land on my bum.
