The concept of the Mercury Café is great. If you are just interested in drinking and/or dancing, it's a good alternative. But this review is about the food and, the service.
We went there for this past New Year's Eve. We arrived for an early dinner to beat the rush, about 6:30. There were plenty of empty tables meaning, the kitchen and the servers were certainly not overwhelmed.
I will say this without any "reservations," (pun intended) our server ("Maria") was without a doubt, the most incompetent food-service person that I have ever encountered in any capacity, in any eating establishment, in all my years of dining out.
First off, "Maria" knew nothing about the Mercury Café drinks' menu; "I don't like our specialty cocktails, but I know that they're all good."
What? "That makes no sense, Maria."
"Well, other people tell me that they're good."
Whereby, she recommended some ginger infused drink, which was horrible.
She knew nothing about the New Year's Eve menu. She said that they did not allow the servers to taste the offerings for that night but, "Everything is very good."
"How do you know?'
"Everyone says so."
"But you just started serving."
Shrug.
"What about the regular menu? What do you recommend off that?"
"I don't know, everything's good..." Good grief.
"Just curious, how long have you worked here, Maria?"
"About a year."
"Have you tasted anything on the regular menu?"
"Some things."
"Doesn't management let the servers taste what they are serving?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know? How are the servers supposed to make recommendations if they have never tasted the food?"
She gave us a mannequin look.
- I ordered the Alamosa Striped Bass Linguini Bass and linguini tossed with garlic, olive oil, hot peppers and herbs, off the regular menu.
My companion ordered the lamb off the NYE menu.
She starts to walk away and my companion asks, "Don't you want to know how I want the lamb cooked?"
"What do you mean?"
"You know, rare, medium-rare, medium, well-done?"
"Okay."
Another, "good grief."
When my sea bass was brought out it was not on a bed of linguini. It was mixed into some penne. There was no garlic, there were no hot peppers.
"I thought that this was supposed to be on linguini?"
"It's a different dish altogether tonight and we are serving it on penne."
"Our server never told us that."
"Talk to her. All the servers were notified about that and all changes for tonight."
My companion asked that the lamb be cooked medium; It was uncooked.
It gets worse; The sea bass, which consisted of 5 small squares of fish, maybe 4 ounces, was hot. But the penne was cool. Not only was my companions' lamb undercooked, the potatoes on the plate were also just lukewarm.
The reason? The plates were "Cold" to the touch. Not lukewarm, not cool, Cold!
So, we tracked Maria down and pointed out these issues with our food.
Now, any other server in any other establishment would, at the very least, make up some excuse and then offer to Warm UP The Food, no? Having been a server, I sure would.
Not Maria. She just stood there with her best mannequin grin and said, nothing. Not-one-word.
Realizing that Maria is an idiot, we asked, "Can you please have the kitchen finish cooking the lamb, and warm up our food?"
Maria hemmed and hawed, fidgeted with her hair until, we just told her to forget it. She was gone in a flash. We asked another server if there was a dining room manager that we might speak with. We just wanted our food warmed up, at the very least.
No one ever came.
I hope Yelp publishes this review and does not exile it to their "...not recommended..." link at the bottom of the page. People need to be aware of what to expect if dining at the Mercury Café. read more
