So many great memories at the Merc! I've taken several Lindy Hop classes and even stepped out of my comfort zone to try Zouk. For whatever reason, I tend to come here on snowy days, which a great way to combat seasonal depression and just dance with a bunch of cool people. Check out their calendar online for a ton of events pretty much every day of the week. Finally checked out the restaurant downstairs more recently, hence the word CAFE in the name. Very affordable and community-oriented. I got the Spicy Bowl and Harissa Small Plate. Both were tasty! Would get them again. Oh and I got one of the dessert specials (Carrot Cake: Vanilla Trifle) which was AMAZING but forgot to take a picture. It's okay, I know I'll be back! read more

We came here the other night and paid 10 bucks per ticket for their jazz night on Saturdays, the music was amazing and so was the crowd... but not impressed by the management team here as it was SUPER cold the entire night upstairs because they didn't take the time to get space heaters up there despite people having paid money to come and watch the show. They tried once after an HOUR of us all sitting there to fix the heater but it was super loud and they just turned it off, they mentioned bringing space heaters in but they gave up on that idea I guess.... This spot has been on my list for a *long* time! We finally came in New Year's Eve for an early dinner. We got seated right away in the Jungle Room, where there was a very talented pianist playing. We had our dinner there but were curious about the performer in the next room over, so we asked our server if we could have dessert in the Rose Room and she kindly let us select a table of our choosing and brought our desserts over so we could check out the singer in Rose Room. Very cool vibe and atmosphere. Delicious and healthy menu, with ample vegetarian and vegan options! And the service was great! When we moved seats, the servers in the other room kept coming to check on us, and so did our original server when she had time. If you are from the Denver area or just moved here and haven't been here yet you are definitely missing out... I have been here multiple times with my son and we both absolutely love it. He has participated an open mic three times and has he use the Mercury stage to help him get over his stage fright. The staff here are friendly and will treat you like family. The restaurant is clean, the food is good. Last time I came we ordered the quesadillas twice in one sitting... The salsa that came with it was just the right amount of spice, and the pico was fresh. I had a screwdriver and a beer while I was here, the bartender did not disappoint. The crowd for the poetry slam is always supportive as well as inclusive. Whether you are a local poet or just a soul with a lot to say, whether you are a comedian on his off day or an eight-year-old trying to combat stage fright - this crowd will welcome you with open arms. Having been going for years to enjoy the eclectic entertainment (dancing, bands, poetry, sing-alongs, witches), colorful delightful decor, and delicious, thoughtfully sourced-and prepared foods. With new owners (but the former amazing owner, I've read, still deeply involved for now) the menu has changed. A pal and went last weekend and ordered the Smoked Shiitakes, Falafel Burger, and Mercury Market Bowl. The food LOOKED great and TASTED out of this world, baby. Yum. The cafe downstairs: excellent. The upstairs music venue? Well the 7pm show on 12/28/14 had no warm-up groups - till after 8:00 and when the warm-ups showed they (rap) were so off-genre for what I came to hear (tuneful melodies of Oubrey Ray & Tarrius), and the rappers were so unimaginative and apparently very early in their careers that I couldn't bear it ... I endured it until I walked out at 9:10, never having seen the show I paid for. Not much for my $32 entry and $20 drink. If you go, plan accordingly. read more

This place is really cute. I went on a Saturday night where they had live poetry and piano music. The place was completely packed and we found out they were unexpectedly hosting a 200 person event. This did affect our experiences. The servers were very very kind and I understand the circumstances we were in. However, because of the large party we had to keep our orders extremely simple and they weren't able to accommodate any accommodations such as removing or adding an ingredient from a burger. I settled for a Caesar salad and would say my food was average. Their menu is pretty simple and healthy but could have been more flavorful. Regardless, I thought the place was really cute and had a great time chatting and drinking wine with my girls. The desserts were actually really tasty. We ordered one of each. What a great place!! We enjoyed a glass of wine and the music. The food was very good. The staff was friendly and knowledgable. They offer vegetarian and vegan choices. Dessert menu was awesome. The atmosphere here is what brings people back. It is vintage and almost holiday-like. The have books to share and places to read. There is live music on some nights. Mercury Cafe serves the most delightful lavender lemon drop! Perfect for summertime sips. I could probably down an entire pitcher on my own if allowed. But that might be too much of a good thing. Beyond the organic spirits and infused syrups, Mercury has a unique vibe that stands the test of time. The building itself looks to be from the early 1900's and is one of the few original structures in a sea of new construction. There was a wedding happening upstairs when I was visiting, but downstairs had plenty of room with a full bar, tons of open booths, a side room for swing dancing, and dessert bar. Plus a tarot card reader available. Cash only is a bit of a bummer. But that's really the only thing wrong with Mercury Cafe. Other than that, I will be coming back for my new favorite cocktail and watch to see how they make it so I can try to replicate at home. read more

Man I usually love this place but would NOT recommend going for food during open mic night. The night I went They were either extremely short staffed and forgetful or just didn't care. I waited for 20 mins to order with no one coming by. Staff walking by wouldn't even look me in the eye. Finally I walked up to the bar to order (good thing I did) and was informed the kitchen was just getting ready to close. Then no one checks on me the rest of the night. The setup/décor of this place is really cool and lovely...hippy/hipsterish to a degree. There's a live stage area that looks cozy. Some friends checked out the upstairs dance area. I have heard it hosts some spiritual and more metaphysical sort of things and had the impression there was a real loving vibe here. Apparently this place is more like a private club where you should be brought for your first time from someone that is in the scene here. They have a special way of doing business here and it is not clearly communicated to "new" people, so it would seem if you aren't in the know, you aren't really welcome. There are lots of hand written signs and instructions all over the place. When you walk in, there happens to be a small one that says, "Cash only" but you would be likely to miss it as we did from the 1000 other things on the walls around it. Since "Cash Only" isn't exactly common place in modern hospitality, it would really be best if the staff here lets people know that up front and not rely on a small sign buried in a mess of other things. We were sat by someone nice, but a different gal comes to wait on us who seems non-interested in waiting on us from the start. She gave us some time to check out the menu since we let it be clear we had never been here. (Remember note about the "Cash only" above?) She comes back and systematically goes around the table and takes our drink orders, and seemed a little exasperated. We're a nice group, so we all tried to keep it simple. It was quite some time before we got our drinks after that for simple bar drinks. The place didn't seem that busy. Our server continues with acting indifferent, apathetic, and treated us like we were the biggest inconvenience. She comes back to the table and with some 'tude & plays the "who's drink is this" game, when it really shouldn't have been that hard with the way she actually took the order. One guy ordered specifically a MacCallan on the rocks, and she keeps asking "who's whiskey neat is this?" The guy responded that he ordered scotch on the rocks and she says, "yeah, this is your drink," puts it in front of him. Nope NOT EVEN CLOSE. It was a whiskey neat - that's no ice, or aka "rocks" ((yes, sarcasm...))-- and not a MacCallans, and another person at our table was also brought the wrong drink entirely. He actually just drank it b/c at this point we all agreed that we were getting out of there as quickly as we could. Couldn't even get her to bring limes for a vodka soda after asking multiple times, & when it was ordered that way to start. She didn't even acknowledge it. Time for the bill, & she just tells us that it is cash only, and she has us all on one check. GREAT timing. 1 round of drinks 30 mins later from walking in, and we now have to scramble to get cash; it was commented that it would have been nice to know that up front, the server was real snarky to let us know "there's a sign when you walk in." Get the bill, and b/c of all the mess-ups she made on the drinks, we scan to make sure it is correct, or within reason, and a way to easily pay, and move on to some other place where getting a drink and getting served doesn't seem to be such a hassle to the employee. No one at the table knew that the bill that was left for us was something we couldn't take with us, b/c like the information about the cash, the server didn't mention that they have a special way of operating where you don't get a receipt and the bill is actually a ticket she has to keep. Someone at our table took the bill with us just out of habit of taking a receipt...NO knowledge that this was going to be an issue and not intending anything by it either. Turns out, one of the guys in our group accidentally left his wallet. He goes back to get it, and the staff tells him that they will not let him have his wallet back b/c we took the bill with us. The SERVER was paid in full, W/ TIP, & had our cash! This is the MOST ridiculous thing I have ever heard, not to mention NOT legal. People that work here think they can hold someone's wallet hostage over a piece of paper???? Thankfully the person that had taken the bill with her unwittingly was still reachable and we returned the paper tab to the bar to get the wallet back. Say we hadn't accidentally left a wallet that could be held captive for negotiations...What would this server have had to do? Probably make note that she lost the original ticket, then remember what she served us and write up a replacement ticket for their records. ***I can't imagine that this doesn't happen on occasion for this place!!!*** THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN HANDLED. OR Since they found his wallet, they could have actually tried just ASKING him if someone in our group had it and could bring it back. Bad attitude service, wrong drinks, lack of communication, and then you hold someone's wallet over paper that the server should have been responsible for? SCAM & Absurd. read more

I've heard of this place too many times to count and finally visited it on a 80s throwback dance party night. To be honest there just aren't enough 80s or 90's dance parties in the city and it totally sucks! We were happy to have been able to find this one and the Mercury Cafe was a great spot for it. I came here with a group of girlfriends the other night, and it was a perfect setting for what we wanted, but probably not five stars worthy. The decor is cool, and very unique. As a fan of twinkle lights, I was into it. The chairs however were sunken in, and could probably be replaced. The menu was decent, and I had two glasses of wine, which were decent pours for the price, and a pasta entree (pricey for what it was- penne with garlic and olive oil for $18). The waitress did warn us prior to ordering that it was cash only, but before then we had no idea. There is an ATM, but honestly, that's enough for me to keep it from being a frequent spot. I would try their brunch, but overall, nothing really wowed me enough to come back any time soon. read more

Was really excited to try this place but sadly, it was not a pleasant experience. The ambiance and music are great. The food and service leave a lot to be desired. Our waitress was not attentive at all. It took us 20 minutes to be greeted and asked for our drink order. She never checked back on us. The appetizers were not good. The entrees were okay but nothing special. I had to walk to the bar twice to order a second drink. For our $200 tab, it was not worth the experience and We won't be back. read more

Worst food and service ever! I don't normally write reviews but this was seriously so bad that I had to write a review! We had a private room booked for 50 people and prepaid and pre-orders our meals. We arrived at 6pm by 9pm half of the group still had not received their pre-ordered meals. They ran out of some items of food and started splitting the serve that was meant for one onto 2 plates, our order was completely wrong so after waiting 3 hours and paying $26 plus a $10 cover charge we couldn't eat the meal. And there was one waitress for the entire room which meant getting drinks or service was impossible. Will never go there again and would not recommend this place! read more
