Came here recently from a recommendation from someone - maybe I need to trust them less ;) We wanted a calm ambience. I didn't know it was going to be a dive bar before arriving. The gist is I guess it's supposed to feel like an old bar car on a train - I didn't remotely get that vibe except maybe the tin ceiling? I was also not warned by the rec that we should stick more to beers or wine here, not cocktails even though they have a pretty decent cocktail menu. I got two grapefruit mimosas which were pretty good and what I expected. My husband first had the paper plane which he said was fine, but then he ordered the bar's Manhattan (meaning they have one they make on their cocktail menu) and it tasted like bourbon and water - like, really not good. He told the bartender and she remade it, but it was still not good. The bartender struck us as....something off? Drunk? Completely out of it? I love a good bartender (friendly, chatty, funny, whatever) and she just seemed in a daze which I think kind of soured our visit. The rest of the people at the bar were fine, nothing too exciting happened. A guy did come in and ask for a glass of water because a trash can outside was on fire, so that was a new one. Kicking myself for not having checked out The Bar Car sooner - what a gem! I always noticed people mingling outside but never gave it a try until recently. Was out with a group of 7 and looking for a place to go after midnight and The Bar Car was where we landed. I loved everything. The bartender was friendly and made great drinks. The prices were very reasonable. The decor was unique and fun. Ample seating options - especially impressive given it's not a huge space - our crew ended up holding court on the back couches. They gave large water glasses to stay hydrated. Not to mention an area to hang outside! I will absolutely be coming back. Really thrilled to have finally checked this spot out. read more

I ventured away from my typical stomping grounds to meet a friend for a drink. This definitely felt like a local bar where people in the close by neighborhoods go for a drink. The demographic was varied, but I had the impression that many people at the bar were regulars. the atmosphere kind of felt like there was nothing too special but I had a grand time sitting at the bar. During happy hour my vodka soda was only five dollars which I thought was a fantastic deal. I guess that is the reward when you venture outside of trendy neighborhoods. My boyfriend took me to an event in Boulder, CO and told me I had to try the fresh pork rinds at this bar. The place was empty but it's because it was before noon. We were on our way to the Rookies baseball game and made a pit stop here. The bartender was super nice. We ordered soda and pork rinds. Tip: not on the menu. Just ask. I heard the server heading our direction by the popping sound of the pork rinds. They add some type of seasoning on top and a slice of lime on the side. Super delicious. I'm salivating just thinking about them. The place is super cool. Has that old Hollywood style. Very clean. This will be a must stop by place whenever we're in Denver. Go check it out! read more

I love this place for multiple reasons. First of all, all the bartenders here are all very friendly. At my most recent visit, I knew I wanted something sweet but wasn't sure what. The bartender whipped up a delicious cocktail for me that wasn't on the menu. Which brings me to my next point: I've loved every drink that I've had here. I've had something different each time I've gone, and I've never been disappointed. Third: this is where I met my boyfriend! It was the perfect, casual environment for our first date, and now we love to come back for a drink or two every now and then. Ordered takeout nachos because I have wanted to check it out and was headed somewhere close by. The atmosphere seems really cool - classy, elegant and old school vibe. Server was friendly despite me just having a quick to go order. Food came out pretty quickly and was packaged well. As for the taste, I added chicken to the nachos and I liked everything about the nachos **except** the meat. It's weird because BBQ is supposed to be their specialty. You want another family outside from home and work; come here. You want to decompress from a bad day and make new buds; come here. You want to have a bartender to tell you that maybe (just maybe) you f*cked up that last relationship attempt and they still love you; come here. Bar Car is the home for making different types of family. Brutally honest, but loving meaningful timeless memories. Some may refer to this as a "hole in the wall bar", to me it's a amethyst buried deep in a peculiar bizarre stone wall... next to a delicious Indian food joint. Local guy brought me here, it's his neighborhood haunt and would be mine too if I lived here. He described it as a "cool dive bar" and he's on the money! Cora, the bartender, made a badass margarita ($8). The tacos at $3/ea. are awesome (pastor and chicken with spicy pineapple salsa=happiness). You can get an order of fries and split it 2 ways (opted for Thai and forget what the other was but it had cheese and sour cream); try it, I liked it :). It's funny that I've lived down the street from the Bar Car for about 7 months now and that a majority of my visits have been within the last couple of weeks. This place is a unique - it reminds me of a bar that you would find in Philly - which is close to where I grew up. It just has that unique charm to it. Anyway, let me get on with it. My first impression of the Bar Car wasn't great. My roommate and I came here one night on our way back home after going to a couple other bars. It was mediocrely busy with one bartender working and it took us a while to get our drinks. Fast forward to two weeks ago. I walk past here all the time and notice that they have BBQ smokers outside from time to time. I had also heard from some friends that the BBQ here is pretty legit. I don't eat BBQ often because when I do, I want to make it worthwhile. Anyway, I decided to stop in here for some food after hitting a nearby brewery and am so glad I did! I ordered the 3 meat combination platter - pulled pork, pulled chicken and brisket with 2 sides - bacon potato salad and baked beans. The meat was tender, juicy and smokey. I'm not normally a fan of potato salad but when you put bacon in it, I am. Needless to say, I polished this plate right off. The bartender was quick to take my order and get me a drink. An order of cheese curds to go (which were also good) rounded out this visit. My most recent visit was with a few friends. I ordered each of their tacos - smoked pork, chicken, brisket, al pastor, and chorizo mashers - they were the perfect size, full of flavor and filled me right up. Next time I'll be sure to come back on a Tuesday, when they are only $1.50. The beer selection isn't half bad and is priced right. They have some cool specials throughout the week such as $1 off drafts during happy hour (M-Th 3-7), beer and shot specials, and of course the mystery shot. I live much closer to the College Inn but this place has got them beat in every category. Looks like I have a new go-to bar. read more

Cool name, beautiful place, and amazing atmosphere. These are some of my best things about The Bar Car. Not a lot of bars with cool music around town and this place definitely manages to stand out, and I say this completely as a person who prides himself on being the great bar connoisseur. Don't get me wrong, it's not by far the best of the best but it's definitely up there with the strong ones.   They also have pizza to hold your stomach when you start to get hunger-weak; it's not the best pizza I've ever eaten of course, but at the same time I'll say it's pretty good for a bar pizza. The Bar Car combines a lot of things I love: - Drinking - Local Beer - Fancy tater tots (They have the crossovers from the Horseshoe like buffalo tots, but they also make a delicious thing called "Natcho Totchos" which is tots, queso blanco, jalapeno, beans, and salsa.) - Corn dogs - Wi-Fi (that's free!) - Good wine (for a bar that doesn't specialize in wine) - they even had one on tap - Happy Hour - The ability to add bacon to anything for a mere $1 - Fun events like a parking lot derby party - Crazy cool bartenders And they have one thing that Sir Nicholas loves in particular - the ol' beer and a shot combo. And this little duo is $6 all day, every day So, all of that clearly makes this place a spot I like and I'd hang out in it even if it smelled a little like pee, or just like The Recovery Room which used to be here. Luckily for me, the remodel has made this into a good smelling, quite lovely bar to hang out and enjoy all of the above. I'm getting to be an old lady. I need light to see. The thing I love about this little dive bar is that it has these great chandeliers that they actually turn on and use! I don't know if it's always that way but I really loved it when I was there. I also love that they have DELICIOUS deep dish pizza with tongue tantalizing tomato sauce (seriously, if you were home alone you would lick it) and crust that was prepared with love. The thin crust pizza is so good that the crust is actually part of the experience instead of just a vehicle for the yummy toppings like BACON. I used their website to order the deep dish ahead of time (it takes 45 minutes) and it was ready when I got there. Recently I've been going to dive bars more often than ever before, especially after Yelp; now to me, big chain bars where there is a corporate America runs it, it makes really not appealing because everything will be the same as any other bars they own, same drinks, same boring foods.
