I'm giving this four stars because we had terrible customer service across the street at Pablo's and then came over here and had excellent customer service. Super friendly bar staff, engaging and attentive. The mixed drinks were generous but the bar is lacking in local beer options- which is a shame for a place like Denver that is brimming with local breweries. I had two Bloody Marys and my husband had the only two local IPA options on tap. We also splurged for the $1.25 tacos and neither of us could complain about the price! They were big portions for the price so it was a little weird that one of the regulars told us that there were good as a snack! I recommend PoP for a mid afternoon buzz and cheap specials! The short male bartender with a gauge ear piercing has made multiple racist comments while I have been there and the manager covered for him and said the bartender said those comments "in good fun and was trying to lighten the mood." Staff is rude and place is very dirty. One of the wait staff handed me tots thinking I had ordered them. I accepted thinking it was a promotion of some sort. They just yelled "anyone with a mustache". I accepted not thinking much of it. I got kicked out soon after. I would have paid for the tots but just didn't have a card on me. I just have to give a shout out to John : I had a mildly negative experience on New Years Day and thought that I just wouldn't go back but four months later, I'm hungry , I live a block away , and these folks have a good burger and great beer on tap, so I thought I'd give it another chance . I'm so glad that I did 'cause John not only is a great conversationalist, but he made me a great burger and hooked me up, completely turning the previous negative experience around. Done here after over 4 years. The "new" (~2 yr?) ownership is reigning over a steady decline in value and service but in the last 2 months or so there has been an exodus of talented and loved bartenders and their replacements seem to be exclusively passive aggressive wannabe hipsters who will not hesitate to make passive aggressive comments about your appearance or the music you like and will avoid eye contact within 3 feet when you're talking to them. I've probably sunk over 10k into this hole over the years but not another cent I've found better places to play pool and much cheaper places to drink beer. read more

Absolutely disgusting. I have been a patron here a while, before and after it was Cafe Netherworld. Recent management made it generic af, but eventually I saw pictures around the place of old Denver that made it seem like it was a relevant joint again, and despite the menu (it's a bar, whatever) it was a cool local spot again thanks to the efforts of staff alone. Management keeps the place a semi grimy exercise in the last place someone can go to watch the game when more happening places are busy. Morale only seems to matter for the customers sake, and that's gross. Creepy vibe anymore. Not particularly rude but wierd and ignorant owner and tonight for once so was the staff. Stopped in on Christmas Eve with my husband and his service dog around 1pm to grab a beer and watch a game. Place is ok, nothing too special-basic full bar and beer offerings. Things were fine until we were paying our tab. The bartender informed us that "the owner requires service dogs to wear a vest if they are in the establishment". When we told her that that isn't allowed, by law, she insisted that "it's not her rules, but the owners rules". We gave her a card stating what business owners are allowed and not allowed to ask/request/demand, etc and left. Our service dog is a small dog that rides in a pouch on my husbands hip-she was never out of the pouch, nor did she make a peep, she's quite well trained, as any service dog should be. The ADA does not require a service animal to display a vest, ID tag or specific harness... As a business owner I would think you would be aware of basic, common laws and rules for dealing with service animals. Obviously, not the case here. I hope the owner(s) of the pub educate themselves and their employees on this matter. read more

This place is an absolute goldmine. I have only been once, on their Wednesday night deal with $6.00 unlimited wings and $8.50 Bud pitchers, but man it's impressive! It's a small bar, so don't go in with the expectation that this place is going to be a crowning culinary achievement. However, go in expecting to eat and drink well above your fill and hang out for a couple hours all while spending maybe 10 bucks if you go with some friends. The wings took about 20 minutes between each order, but that was to be expected. The server we had on the patio, Ian, was working his ass off. The man deserves a raise, because it is very obvious he probably hates Wednesdays with how much work is expected of him. He never messed up our order and was awesome to talk with. Go and have fun! Patio is great and music provided by the customers is always on point, only downside is the food, not bad but nothing special, typical bar food in Colorado. I have been here several times... And each time I a little more let down. Maybe it's the location that is weird... Who knows. There is always just a different crowd, which I usually like... But so far I have seen two fights go down here, and it made me feel a little uncomfortable that no one was doing anything. Their patio closes early, which I think is weird. And they make everyone go inside while they lock it up.... You can't even stand out there while your dog is locked up to the gate. It's inside or peace out. Impossible street parking made it 3 stars for me. If you ride your bike or live around the neighborhood this place is your goldmine. Wednesday $8 pitchers plus $5 all you can eat wings. Website says 6-11pm but you have to get here around 5pm if want to find a seat and they do start serving the wings around 5pm. The back room has TVs and pool tables but it gets so loud you have have to scream even talking to someone sitting next to you. They also have outdoor patio seating. This is always a great comfortable bar. They always have games playing and there is ample seating (but it can get crowded during normal times). It's a great place to watch the games. The bartenders have always been very nice to me. They also have great specials, esp the wings night! I have celiac disease and they glutened me. It's definitely a dive and not the kind of place where people like me can safely eat. Having said that, the waitress/bartender was amazing and the salad was still crispy. The chicken breast was overcooked and my boyfriend said his hamburger was greasy, rubbery, and frozen-tasting - but it seems like a great place to visit for drinks with your friends. Though I find myself most often frequenting bars in the SoBo area of Denver, it is the Pub on Penn that consistently draws me out of my Wash Park cocoon and into the web of Cap Hill. I've been a fan of Pub on Penn from the get-go, initially because one of my favorite bartenders from Pub on Pearl (John) left to enjoy the perks of ownership with this fine establishment. However, I can now tell you that I enjoy coming to Pub on Penn on its own merits. I tend to arrive earlier in the day to utilize the free WiFi and take advantage of the happy hour that begins at 11am. There's really no better way to work than with $2 domestics and $2.50 wells at your disposal, in my opinion. And, bonus! The windows let in enough light to make you feel like you're NOT a sad alcoholic when you begin drinking earlier in the day. Although there is usually a sparse selection of bar food for vegetarians (even in Denver), Pub on Pearl seems to have made an effort to have more than french fries available. Their veggie burgers are delicious, and you really can't beat getting a veg burger and fries (or tots) for $4.95. There are a few other nomnom options on the menu as well (try to utilize the spicy ranch, if at all possible). I've noticed in the evenings that the service not at the bar can be a little slower, though I think that's something they're trying to remedy. My one real gripe with Pub on Penn is that the *good* beer (IPAs, Strongbow, etc) is not included in the happy hour. After all, there's only so much PBR a girl can drink. read more

The location, the selection, the crowd... Everything is perfect for a mid-30s milquetoast dude like myself. In my brief and rare visits, I have never felt the pressure of the growing crowd of absolute hipsters that are prevalent in Denver to try to represent myself as something of a 'hip cat'. I enjoy being comfortably dressed and relaxed when I drink any type of beer. Hell, I would even be comfortable drinking a nice glass of wine in this place. Good food, too. We come here once or twice a week and usually have a good time. Free pool on the weekends which is awesome. Came in today, place was mostly empty and we grabbed a pool table. Waited for 20 minutes while the server "Kristen" sat at a table talking to a guy. Had to ask the bartender to send her over. She took our order, 2 drinks and 2 waters. She came back with the drinks and no waters and went back to sit down with her friend. Had to wait another 10 minutes and then reminded her to bring waters... Very disappointed with this lack of service. read more

I came in for all you can eat wings a few weeks ago. I'd been hesitant to try a place that sells unlimited wings for $8, because I figured it must be too good to be true. Maybe the wings are tiny, maybe the sauces aren't any good, maybe the place is so crowded that you'll never get $8 worth of wings, or maybe the wings aren't chicken at all. Wrong on (almost) all counts. Pub on Penn does get crowded, so you may have a hard time finding a place to sit or stand. But aside from that, the wings are indeed chicken, they're delicious, and it's a great deal. I was especially impressed by our server, who took orders not only from my table of seven or eight hungry dudes, but also the entire section. He didn't write anything down, and managed to accurately fill our orders time and again. Aside from the minor feeling of guilt from consuming 15 chickens' worth of wings and the subsequent feeling of overfullness that follows, I'd say that the experience was overall very positive. I've been to Pub on Penn a few times and always had a good experience, but tonight I wandered in on what turned out to be all you can eat wings night, and the place was packed. Easily 5x the number of people I've ever seen there. Even though they were so busy, all the employees were friendly and on top of their shit from the moment we walked in the door. Our server in particular was a guy with a short man bun. That dude was working his ass off but had a great attitude the whole time. The wings also surpassed expections. I had very little confidence before I ordered them, given the fact that they seemed to be cranking out about 600 wings/ per minute. However, they were very well done, and we enjoyed all 3 flavors we tried. I don't go out writing yelp reviews every time I eat wings, but these guys were really on top of it this time. read more

My girlfriend and I stop in here 1-2 times a month every Thursday. I drive in to downtown and we meet up to walk 8 blocks to come here. We have been going here for the last year at least. There are several lunch options in this part of town and we have it as one of our go to places. It's never crowded, we enjoy using the TouchTunes to listen to some of our favorite music as we chat and relax during our lunch break. The food is also better than average and varied. In the last few months the usual Thursday guy was replaced by someone else. I never caught his name. He seems less personable or helpful but the service was never bad enough to complain about it. That is til yesterday. The only time he left the bar was to give us our drinks and a single menu and later serve our food. He took our order by shouting from the bar. I had to come up to the bar to get drink refills and to close out our tab. Mind you, there were only two other people in the place and both were at the bar. He was more interested in his phone than he was at our dining comfort. Also sometime during our meal one of the songs we had chosen on the TouchTunes ended abruptly. We have no idea why but we suspect the bartender/waiter decided he had had enough of it and invoked administrative power on the juke box. So, I hate to be one of those people that only posts a review after a horrible experience but I feel this quality of service warrants some feedback so the owner knows their lunch income is going to start dwindling if everyone is treated this way and if he was reserving this special treatment for just us?
