Karaage (Fried Chicken) Japanese fried chicken, eggplant, grated daikon, sprouts, & og kurozu vinaigrette.

A friend of mine wanted me to try out Mensho and brought me to the Phoenix location which is tucked in a cute little plaza amongst other eateries. The interior is absolutely gorgeous and upon entering the staff greets you in a traditional Japanese greeting. We arrived just before a rush of people and were seated promptly. Unfortunately, I was not able to try the ramen () due to all of the soup bases containing mushrooms, bummer!! However, I did order the Kaarage, which was crispy, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. The eggplant was also delicious and refreshing. We also ordered Corn Wings and Garlic Edamame which were also delicious!

The Lobster Ramen was a fun one-time experience -- you're definitely paying a premium for the lobster, but it's executed really well. That said, the Cauliflower Tantanmen completely stole the show! It was packed with flavor and by far the best dish we had. Hotate Butter is very true to the name, scallop and butter you can go wrong with it Service: The servers were genuinely kind and friendly. They checked on us regularly and kept our waters refilled without us even having to ask. Top-notch hospitality.

Stopped in for a late evening dinner on Sunday. It was not busy. Quiet and relaxing. Service was quick and attentive. Our waiter went over some of the more popular dishes with the table and answered a few questions. My friend selected the Signature Toripatian. He said the flavor was amazing and the waygu was "killer". Would definitely come back. I got the Cauliflower Tantamen which has a light spice and a great flavor not overly salted like some places I've been. You wouldn't know it was vegan by the broth. You have the option to add toppings or protein, but I chose to go as is and I wasn't disappointed. I'd like to try the sushi next time but not sure I could stray from the ramen.

Had a great time here, casual vibes, nice lighting, friendly staff. The enoki chips were alright but probably wouldn't order again, nice and salty with lemon squeezed over. Seeing so many good reviews for the Garlic Ramen, I ordered that. It was delicious, lots of yummy proteins, so many different garlic flavors, I was really impressed. I had a little half serving leftover that reheated really well the next day. Would get again!

Just amazing. I went with two friends who are more seasoned than I regarding Asian cuisine and we all loved Mensho. It was busy on a Friday night but we were able to sit at the bar and the staff was friendly and helpful throughout the night. Beautiful interior with nice outdoor seating with a modern feel. The appetizers are alright, but the ramen is the star here. The Garlic Knock Out had so much flavor, a smooth body, and fresh toppings that perfectly complimented the noodles. Would love to come back!

We LOVED the spicy chicken karage. The GKO ramen was our favorite that we had, we loved the garlic, the crunchy ingredients and the overall flavor. The signature ramen was the second best. The wagyu beef and pork on the signature ramen had a really good taste and texture to it, but the broth and complexity of the dish were not as refined. I was going to give 5 stars to this restaurant but I did not enjoy the service, our server was really sassy and at some point when I was trying to order for my husband she wouldn't let me and said she would wait for him to come back and would not let me order for him. That rubbed me the wrong way. Then I tipped not even knowing tip was included, I found out only after signing the check, but it was not Obvious that tip was included. I felt ripped off because tip became double. The service was not good and now I was tipping 40% The ambiance was nice. Overall not a bad place

I would love to give this place more than 5 stars because WOAH AMAZING 11/10!!! First of all we walked in with great service, the bartender was very attentive and gave us different recommendations. He was very honest about what sake we should and shouldn't order and how the most popular option might not be the best option. We got a whole bottle of sake which served 6 glasses for $18! The ramen was the star- the broth was flavorful and buttery!! Not exactly sure how they got it to be so perfect but we sat there for 10+ mins not saying a word to one another since the ramen was so good. The signature and classic were great options! Space is nice because there are booths and you can sit at the bar! There wasn't any outdoor seating but it wasn't needed. The restaurant is located in the back of a strip mall which can be hard to find at night!

This is one of many times I have come here for dinner. Fabulous restaurant, food is well worth the price and is amazing every time. The service depends on the server, obviously but I have had varied experiences, but I have never had a blatantly bad experience. Try the GKO (garlic knockout), you won't regret it! I said classic for the signature ramen in the photo.

Excellent first impression- the food, service, ambiance and innovation are all there. I'll just have to come back because the menu is full of dishes I now must try.

I ordered the Signature Toripaitan - chicken soup, A5 wagyu, smoked pork, duck, chicken, spinach, truffle paste, green onion, fried gobo, smoked ajitama, blacken negi. The chicken soup was creamy and rich in flavor. I also loved the thicker fresh noodles. Meats were all cooked perfectly, tender, and also flavorful. Very impressed with the smoked custardy egg wow. I have no criticism for this specific ramen and would return to try more of the menu. Service was good. Waiter was positive and helpful. Although the ramen was pricey, arguably worth it compared to 99% of "ramen" in US.

Fantastic service! When I tell you that the staff was so attentive and on it...man, they really know customer service. There is indoor and pursuit seating available. I love the décor it is a representative of the Asian culture. And while I did not try the ramen, everyone at the table did and had great things to say regarding the favor. Many stated that they liked the thickness of the broth. I did try the garlic edamame as well as the spicy karaage and both was very pleasing. I have no complaints. There is accessible parking and entrance.

I've been dying to try this place! We went with a group of 8 and had about an hour wait to get seated which was fine - we just grabbed a drink at the Thai place across the way. The food was definitely unique and not your standard ramen. I thought the edamame were nothing special and the corn rib app was tasty. For ramen, mine was good but I wish I'd ordered the garlic one that my friend had because that broth was amazing! I was sad to see they don't have wine except plum wine.

My son took me here for a really good bowl of ramen. Let me start by saying this place is really pricey! He has been here before and recommended the signature ramen (Signature Toripaitan) which includes a lot of different meats A5 Wagyu, duck, chicken and smoked pork. I was sold and we both ordered it. This was my most expensive ramen I have ever ordered as it was $29 dollars. Unfortunately I received my ramen first and we were puzzled on where his order was. I started to eat it and it took about 5 minutes to wave down a server and ask where our second order was. We were told it was still being prepared which was puzzling and disappointing. By the time the second bowl arrived I was pretty much finished. I was still hungry and decided to try their wagyu sushi. This again was very pricey and it was just meh. I didn't see any information on where they get their meat but I don't think its Japan. It didn't hit like the Ramen so I would recommend to stick to just the ramen as the sushi cost $16 which is what a typical bowl of ramen would cost elsewhere. The restaurant was very large for a ramen establishment and we were seated very quickly. I gave this 3 stars as I removed 1 for service and 1 for price.

Upon entering, we were free to seat ourselves and chose a booth by the wall. It was not busy at all and the service was quick and friendly. We started off with a large sake bomb paired with a Kirin Light ($15). We then ordered two Tonkotsu Ramens, one medium spice and one hot spice ($15.99 each). Honestly, the hot spice level did not taste spicy at all, so I would recommend going extra hot if you like spice. They also provide chili powder on the table if you want to add more spice yourself. The ramen broth itself could have used a tad more flavor. I lightly added some soy sauce to the broth which is something I often do to add a little kick. I loved all of the toppings included, from the green onions to the kikurage (wood ear mushroom). My favorite part was the pork chashu, which was really tender and delicious. I also appreciated that the ramen came with a full soft boiled egg rather than half an egg, and the egg was perfectly runny. Before leaving, we ordered their tea special that was buy one get one. We got a matcha milk tea and a cafe latte which I forgot to take a photo of. I felt like the cafe latte could have used a little more sweetness to balance it. Also, I found it neat that Nishikawa offers a rewards program, not something I see often at ramen shops. My true rating would be 4.5 due to some of the criticisms I mentioned above, but overall I still had a good experience. Thank you for serving us. Visited 5/2/26

I sat there for several minutes and when she came back, she asked if I was ready to order. I asked for a menu and then she tapped this little sign on the table that had a QR code on it. I guess they want you to use your phone to look up the menu but then she brought me a printed menu and a glass of water. I had about a minute to look at the menu before the waitress came back and asked what I wanted. I ordered the small portion of the chicken karaage appetizer and the Nishikawa Black Ramen. Both items came out at about the same time. The chicken was good and there was a lot which somewhat surprised me because I thought they had given me a large portion by mistake. The only downside was that the plate was really small so the chicken kept tumbling onto the table. The ramen was just ok. It came in a really big bowl and there was a lot of broth and toppings but relatively little noodles in comparison. It was more like a bowl of soup. The slice of pork was huge but a little bit chewy when I was expecting it to be tender. The egg wasn't sliced so it was difficult to pick up the entire piece with my chopsticks. The chicken was $7 and the ramen was $18. I would have been ok just getting the chicken, perhaps a large portion for $12. I wouldn't get this particular ramen again. With tax and a tip my total was a little over $31 which isn't the most I've spent at a ramen restaurant, but it wasn't cheap either. I wasn't offered a refill on my drink until after I had paid and was ready to leave. In fact, I only saw the waitress once after my food was brought out, and that was when she brought me the bill. The rest of the time she was somewhere in the kitchen.

Roughly 10 mins later, a new waiter brings me out an egg in a bowl! I politely told him I asked for it to be in my ramen, not as a side. He looks at me as if I've lost my mind, then asks if I want it in a to-go box... why?? I told him a second time, that I asked for it to be on my soup, the ramen! He walked away. On a Sunday evening, after checking out the Desert Botanical Garden, I was looking for some food in…read morethe area. I came across Zu Izakaya and it's great reviews as one of the options. I love Japanese food so my decision was made. I drove over and parked in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (3.5/5): I've been to Japan and there are plenty of izakayas there. Think of them as small bars which often serve solid food. Zu fits that bit. It's a relatively small restaurant, probably seats about 30 people. and it's pretty no frills for a Japanese spot. I was seated at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. They have free WiFi which is always a good touch. Service (3/5): Service was friendly, though a bit inconsistent. My waitress wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. The type of service where you have to flag them down to get what you want and to close out. Drinks (4/5): Zu has a nice menu of Japanese and Korean beverages, including sake, soju, Japanese beer, and more. With that being said, I just had an iced green tea. Food (4/5): I got a nice variety. I went with the Japanese sausage off of the grill menu, the OBI mayo roll off of the sushi menu, and the cheese corn off of the appetizer menu. Let's start with the sausage. It's a small item, two small sausages, but absolutely delicious. The sausage was bursting with flavor and basted in a sweet sauce. Minus the portion size, perfection. The cheese corn also hit the spot, but the execution was off. The corn is served on a hot platter, and unfortunately some of the corn on the edges was badly burnt. The type of situation where they should start over. Which they didn't. Lastly, the OBI mayo roll is essentially a California roll with marinated warm shrimp on top in a mayo sauce. I didn't love the hot and cold combo (shrimp and sushi), but outside of the temperature, it was a delicious roll. All in all, a very food meal. My only gripe with Japanese food is that it can get expensive quick. Given that Zu is in Tempe, I was hoping that prices would be a little cheaper. With that being said, they do have a solid happy hour (and reverse happy hour) with both food and drink specials. Next time I stop by, I'd like to check out some of their Korean options. I focused on the Japanese stuff this time (which makes the majority of the menu). Next time around, the bulgogi is calling my name!

Funny enough, this actually wasn't even the exact restaurant my partner had been thinking of when he brought it up, but honestly I'm so glad we ended up here anyway because the food was REALLY good. We ordered the flaming ohmygod sushi roll, and man... it was amazing. Not only was the presentation fun, but the sushi itself actually tasted incredible too, which sometimes isn't the case with more "gimmicky" menu items. It was so good that I literally ordered another roll to-go and took it on the plane back home with me because I already knew I'd be craving it later. That alone should say enough about how much I liked it. I also tried the matcha martini, and it was honestly one of the best cocktails I've had in a while. It had the perfect balance of matcha flavor and alcohol where neither one overpowered the other. Sometimes matcha drinks either taste way too earthy or completely lose the matcha flavor under the alcohol, but this one was super smooth, flavorful, and really well done. The restaurant itself also has a really nice atmosphere. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and the indoor area definitely has a more upscale vibe than your usual sushi spot and that makes the experience feel a little more elevated and perfect for a date night. On top of all that, the servers were super friendly and provided genuinely great service throughout the meal. Everyone was attentive, welcoming, and made the experience feel really comfortable and enjoyable. Overall, this place completely exceeded my expectations. Great sushi, fun presentation, amazing drinks, friendly service, and a really nice atmosphere. I'd absolutely come back again.

We were there at around 5pm and it wasn't too busy, but there was a steady flow of diners coming in and out. Seating is ample, with outdoor, bar, sushi bar, and regular table options. I ordered two rolls: hot havana and mango roll. Both were delicious and the mango was juicy! The purple rice was super fun and set them apart from other sushi spots. I also ordered the miso soup to start. The food came out quickly. My only "complaint" is there aren't a ton of classic roll options. But this is a more upscale sushi restaurant, so it isn't surprising. I will keep this place in my list of spots to hit when I'm looking for a bite to eat in DTPHX.

Naturally, I'd find when I'm now remote. I stopped by the office then wanted a low key dinner with a coworker to catch up. Fellow Yelpers recommended this location, and I had in my bookmarks of places to try. Shout out to those Yelpers as we both loved it! What we ordered: - Edamame えだまめ - VEGAN SOY 醤油ラーメン - SPICY 鶏白湯スパイシー - Dr Pepperドクターペッパー - Diet Coke ダイエットコーラ Upon entering, we were immediately greeted and it was very easy to maneuver the tablet to place our order. The staff were friendly and promptly brought drinks and the appetizer of edamame. I found myself scanning the room periodically to check out all the anime, and especially the beautiful light fixture with origami. Very cute location, and excellent ramen! If you are in the area, check out this location!

If you're an anime lover, then the interior filled to the brim with anime stickers and posters adds to the fun you'll have while waiting for your food. Noise level is 3/10 if 10 means bustling and loud. I want to make a very specific note about their pork used in certain bowls, this is the first time ever I've had pork on the sweeter side. It's interesting for the initial bites but I still prefer the straight savory pork chasu flavor 99% of ramen places serve. The broth was half thick but still goes down well, but I wouldn't say it reached the expectation of spicy was there when there's an emphasis in the title for its spiciness. My final verdict of Origami, if you're not wanting to go far from the bordering Chandler-Ahwatukee area, give this place a shot.
