I was first surprised at the ad for some supplement on the table. I found that odd. Then I noticed the menu had almost no descriptions. Chubby Checker Bacon Cheeseburger. Is that just a bacon cheeseburger? We got omelets. The egg was too thin to hold the filling. I prefer a fluffy omelet. The filling looked and tasted premixed, rather than fresh. I wish the toast would have come out pre-buttered, so the butter would have melted. The grits weren't good, but that was probably just the brand. I don't blame the diner for that. We stopped here for dinner as Mel's was right by our hotel. First day, they were too busy, so we came back, thinking this place must be the hot place in town. The inside décor is cool and something that goes back to the 50's and 60's, but that was just about all. Yet the locals seem to love this place. Our server, was quite unorganized and it took about 20 minutes to get our food. I observed a few others who came in after us who received their food first, maybe our server forgot to put in our order? Anyhow, the food here is your typical traditional American fries, onion rings and hamburgers that are cooked in too much grease. This is not a place that I would visit more than once. The appeal here is the decor. The food is ok. They have fried corn on the cob so I had to try it. It just tasted like old leftover corn. The Mac and cheese was pretty good the pot roast, does not, "melt in your mouth". I out was so chewy, I had to ask for gravy on the side. Maybe I should've gotten a sandwich, most people seemed to enjoy them. The burgers were really big bit a premade patty. Our burger toppings were incorrect. We didn't bring it to the servers attention, he was very nice. We had to try the humongous banana split, made with six scoops. There's nothing special about the flavors of ice cream. Strawberry, chocolate and vanilla covered with strawberry, pineapple and chocolate syrup. Covered with whip, nuts and a cherry. The thing was so big we couldn't even eat it all. I am a sucker for oldies themed diners and Mel's fit the bill. From the outside it looks like a giant Airstream and on the inside vinyl seat booths lining both ends with the grill in the center along with Counter with additional seating and a juke box spinning great oldies. The Menu has great food names like The Chubby Checker Cheeseburger, Fonzerelli Cheese sticks and Joanie's Chips and salsa. After being seated, Dana came over and took our drink orders as we continued to peruse the menu. When she returned I chose the Chubby Checker cheeseburger, sans the bun and I switched fries for applesauce; while my bestie opted for a taco salad. Within a short time we were looking at our orders. My burger was really flavorful and I really enjoyed it. The bestie's salad looked pretty good, except that it was borderline nacho like with the huge amount of tortilla chips and not much lettuce bit he seemed to still enjoy it. I typically try to steer clear of the major chain restaurants in this area of the Smokies, and I was so glad I finally made my round to Mel's. After you're done oogling the awesome neon and interior, you take a seat and start scouring the HUGE greasy spoon menu. I ordered the catfish as my main and it was perfectly cooked and breaded. Soft and fork-flakey, just how I like it! Be advised that the portions are HUGE, and I quickly realized that myself and my friend (who ordered the same thing) could have literally split our meal and still had leftovers to take home! Super cute diner in the Publix shopping center. It's conveniently located off the Parkway. I had breakfast for dinner and it was excellent. My partner had the french dip and it was just okay. They had a sign about if they music is too loud, you're too old. Normally I would agree, but we had a hard time hearing each other over the deafening music (good music! just loud) All in all, it was still worth going. read more

Typical dinner with good service. If you're looking for fancy don't even bother. If you're looking for good food, get ready! The fried catfish was a little on the salty side but oh so amazing. I got it with fried okra and onion rings which had no salt so it was the perfect combination. Mom had a club sandwich that was so big she only ate half and even struggled with that. Hubby had a double cheeseburger which he said was really good. They play great music and our server was very polite, upbeat and honest with his recommendations. Its funny... this place is interesting. They use high quality ingredients for their desserts and skimp on ingredients for thier food. Thats why the banana split was 5 stars (dope) and the grilled ham n cheese with bacon cheese fries was 2 stars (wack). We had Mel's Diner the other day for dinner at 10 and the food was amazing. It was freshly cooked and tasted great. It is very hard to choose what to have because they have amazing food to choose from. I highly recommend the three layer grilled cheese( I think that's what is called).Our wait was long but it was worth it. You can have a choice to stay in your car and wait or stay outside. Our waitress was amazing( by the way she was really funny).She always had something to say and was really kind. Even if it was 10 o'clock at night, she was very friendly. read more

The food at Mel's is excellent. However, there isn't much of it. My husband's Reuben was small, and his pasta salad side was in a small ramekin. I had the hamburger steak, which was smaller than your average hamburger patty. My sides of fries and Cole slaw were both served in a small ramekin as well. If there were over five individual fries, I was lucky. We left hungry, which isn't saying much. Also, the general ambiance was off-putting. A prominently placed sign declared "If the music is too loud, you're too old." I like loud music myself, but not while I am eating and trying to carry on a conversation. The owners are also selling some kind of bee pollen capsules by placing laminated ads on each table??? We were seated quickly and the service was friendly and lightning fast. read more
