Jumbo Fried Jumbo Shrimp with Spiced Salt 椒盐虾
Justis T.

One of my favorite neighborhood spots. While the restaurant can definitely host more formal or romantic gatherings, it's easy enough to grab a quick meal here or order something for takeout. The service is always quick. While the staff can sometimes come across as short, they really are very friendly, especially when one smiles at them and is polite. My absolute favorite dish is the Fried Jumbo Shrimp with Spiced Salt (pictured). I also really enjoy their pork dumplings (available either steamed or pan fried), the Chinese roast pork, and several of their soups. My partner, who is VERY picky in his eating, really enjoys their General Tso's Chicken. It's hard to find a place where we can both enjoy Asian food (i.e., my palette is much broader than my partner's), but Meiwah meets the brief.

I've ordered catering here several times for big family gatherings and it's been great! The food is good and everything was presented nicely and they even packaged sauces for us separately. I love that they offer sushi in addition to Chinese food, so that's one less stop to pick up food when trying to cater to everyone! I haven't dined in yet, but the dining room looks nice. Staff has been fantastic and friendly in helping me with my orders!

Meiwah did an amazing job hosting our wedding reception, many thanks to the countless staff members who worked so hard on event day as well as the days leading up to it. Special thanks to Sally L, who was in charge and our point of contact. She updated us throughout the planning and was transparent about restaurant policies. Almost a year prior we were shopping for restaurants in the DMV area that offer Chinese-style banquets. We stopped by for lunch and were impressed by staff professionalism, good food (plus presentation) and beautiful decor. We expressed interest and were shown the private party room and prelim prices. Sally followed up with us via phone with additional info. Several weeks later we decided to book with Meiwah (the wedding date was still available). In the months following, they worked with us regarding menu (crafting a veganized version for certain tables), decor, parking, cocktail hour, and alcohol orders, ect. When things changed they adapted and accommodated. The restaurant also went through a renovation during that time and finished well before the wedding. The patio and dining room looked very modern, elegant and well lit. On reception day we were welcomed to a festive private party, where the usual white linens were swapped out for red and gold tablecloths/napkins. They added red roses for each table centerpiece, table assignments, and arranged our party favors perfectly. They threw in extras (sesame balls, cut up fruit, chocolates, almond cookies). More importantly each course in the banquet meal was excellent. The guests complimented and praised the food (Peking duck, lobster Cantonese, seafood soup, flounder, ect). Staff service was seamless (each course came out perfectly timed, plates and utensils were cleared in a timely manner, ect). Sally was present to tend to guest needs as well as help staff. Many thanks for making our wedding day such a memorable one, as well as going above and beyond to make sure everything needed was catered to.

The food was good, the service is prompt. The place looks nice. They have a parking garage.

The food was very cold. My waiter microwaved it and returned it to us, but it was still the same as before.

Discovered this place during the pandemic and been a customer since. My fav is beef & broccoli. It has a sauce that's nicely savory, which is what I'm looking for. I can vouch for the wonton soup; it's one of the better ones that I've had in the DMV. The seafood soup is interesting, with shrimp, scallop and crab. I've only done take-out. It's a bit of an effort to get to the take-out area, located on the second floor in the back of the building, up a flight of bleak stairs. On my first visit, I thought I was in the wrong spot. Meiwah is competitively priced and reliable.

Ordered takeout from here because I had a bottle of wine at home I wanted to drink. I grew up in DC and was a customer of the owner's previous restaurant, City Lights of China. Ordered the General Tso's chicken, pork fried rice, spare ribs, shrimp/pork dumplings and whole fried fish. The whole fried fish and spare ribs were great. We weren't expecting a snapper as the fish so it was a nice surprise. Everything was super fresh and tasty and up to par with New York Chinese food. Quick service since the food was ready about 20 minutes after ordering on the phone.

March 2019: I had a date with this woman I briefly dated who lived in Arlington. It was her first time seeing me on my home tuff, Maryland. Funny her name was the same as my ex-g/f of a year earlier. See my McGinty's Irish Pub review in downtown Silver Spring I just wrote where I reference that ex. My friend called my ex her name #1 & this woman as her name #2. I picked this nice sushi restaurant on this very cold March night. It's a bit of a hole in the wall and on a strange one-way on the back side of Georgia Ave. But in spite of those minor negatives, wow this place was impressive. This is possibly the 2nd best sushi I've ever had. Service was cordial. August 2019: I remembered that Moby Dick was great that I took my relatively new girlfriend at that time. She was impressed with them too. February 2020: On Tuesday, February 25, 2020, my girlfriend took the Metro to DC for work. I dropped her off at the Metro, and after I dropped her off, I realized she left her phone in my car. I tried to turn around to see if she was still there, but she wasn't. So, I took her phone with me to my office. I had both phones with me. I think I let some friends of ours know what was going on. Ultimately, on the evening commute, someone on the Metro was nice to let her borrow his phone. I met up with her. We had a movie too and weren't able to coordinate timing. So, we didn't have time for dinner and went straight to movie. We got popcorn to hold us over; I think it was my birthday popcorn I get from AMC. After the movie, we ate a late dinner at Moby Dick. I knew she had a rough day and was stressful for me too that I wanted to treat her & myself to sushi we knew was good. Once again, Moby Dick didn't disappoint.

Service Was a little slow to bring the drinks but other than that very friendly and helpful. They gave my 4 year old a small bowl of soup which was appreciated. Ambiance Nice place to sit down. Decor is nothing special. Overall We found it walking by. Doesn't look like much from the street. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but if I was here we would consider coming back. If you go I'm sure you will enjoy it.

My major contention with this experience is that our waiter, Zoe was inattentive and unprofessional. Our dessert arrived 5 minutes after receiving our dinner. I asked her if they could make our dessert fresh and her response was, how long will it take you to eat? To which I responded I don't know. It was an odd experience because most waiters are attentive enough to know when a table is ready for dessert or they simply ask. As I expected, by the time we received the fried ice cream, the plate looked sloppy and the ice cream on the inside was melted. It clearly was the same plate. Finally, while I was packing my dinner she seemed to recall she never brought me chili paste I had asked for during dinner. No apology or anything. Overall, it was a disappointing experience from a waiter who should be retrained.

None of us were from this area, and we intended to go to the Mayflower Chinese Restaurant, based on Yelp reviews. However, once we walked in the door, it was apparent this place was focused on carryout, and there was no way we were staying to eat in their dingy entrance area. We walked next door to the Meleket Ethiopian restaurant. However, the place was deserted, and we didn't stay there either. We tried the Lime & Cilantro, the next place down, but it was packed and couldn't handle our group. So, we skipped past the verernary clinic and went to Spring Garden. And, what a great choice that was. They offer a huge menu of Chinese, Thai, and Japanese meals. Everything is reasonably priced. Once we got our food, we were impressed with the quality and portion sizes. And, through it all, the service was prompt and friendly. I ordered Hot and Sour soup (my bellwether for Chinese restaurants) and beef chow fun. The soup was flavorful without being overpowering, and the chow fun was delicious too. I liked everything so much that I ordered another soup and Thai Basil with Chicken to go, and that's been my lunch for the past couple of days. Don't be put off by the seediness of its location. We were walk-ins, and didn't know that there was already a queue for the sushi - we were quoted about 45 minutes, which we thought was a bit extreme, but since we were in the area, we decided to wait. Their menu is pretty extensive, offering rolls, sashimi, vegetarian options, and combos. We ordered: +the Sushi Deluxe - this came with tuna, yellowtail, salmon, flounder, omelet, squid, shrimp, eel, clam, and shad roe in nigiri form; there were also 6 pieces of California roll +a Sashimi Deluxe - 3 pieces of tuna, yellowtail, flounder, and salmon, and 2 pieces of octopus and purple clam Sushi could have been more fresh; some of the fish had an odor to it, and the octopus, especially, was way too fishy in both odor and taste. The sushi rice was a little too loose and kept breaking apart; we felt that there could have been more quality control in preparing these, especially with the long wait time and the high price points. The mart is super small and kind of tight, but I was surprised at the selection and some produce that they had available. Staff were friendly.
