It had been a while since my last trip to Medium Rare and I can guarantee you that much time will not pass again before my next visit. This is one of those places that is just really good and really reasonably priced (especially for the area). It's a prix fixe menu ($22.95) that includes rustic bread, salad, and Culotte Steak with hand-cut fries; and don't forget that secret sauce! Sounds great right? Guess what? You get TWO HELPINGS OF STEAK AND FRIES. When you're done with your first plate the second helping just magically arrives! That secret sauce is soooo good. Pour it on thick and ask for more! There aren't a ton of drink options so we went with a nice Cabernet Sauvignon to go with the steak. Paired nicely and wasn't too expensive. I'll take that combo every time. This is one of those places I occasionally go to to "hit the spot" - a lot of meat, a lot of tasty carbs (crusty bread and two helpings of French fries), and a salad to make me feel somewhat better about it. All for a little over $20, so it's quite the deal! I like that it is a set menu and all you have to do is choose how much the steak is cooked. I will commend them on cooking the steak to what you want it to be - my partner got medium rare, and I got medium - both cooked exactly to that standard. I think the salad could taste a little fresher, fries a tad crispier, and maybe a different sauce option for the steak since it's not my favorite (though most people love it!). My very first time hearing of this restaurant was when I was in the East Coast visiting family. My husbands best friend that lives out there recommend to take us and just by the name of it, I had a feeling it was a steakhouse. I was beyond stroked. Entering the resturant, the vibe and atmosphere was wonderful. There weren't many people there, but that still didn't stop us from checking this place out. Once we got seated we got served water and went straight into ordering there's only ONE thing to order from the menu besides the desserts. The menu was short and simple which I really liked. You order the steak how you want it to be done and that comes with fries on the side. After we ordered the waitress brought complimentary bread and butter to the table, but unfortunately most of the bread we got was stale. We then received a side salad that came with the orders, and I must say, it tasted like it's been pre-dressed and portioned since the morning. It felt as if they were waiting for customers to order their food, and ready to serve salad on plates that are beyond cold. Our food was brought to the table in no time which was wonderful because there were four hungry people ready to demolish some steak and fries. My husbands friend was the first to dig in and the first thing he asked was for everyone to take a bit of their steak and check the temp. All four plates of steak that was supposed to be served hot, wasn't sadly. The waitress then came and asked how our food was and that's when we told her about the steaks temperature. She apologized and called her manager. Once the manager heard what happened, she was kind enough to ask if we wanted to take it into the back and fix it, but due to us not having enough time to wait for that, we just asked to make sure our second plate would be better than the first. The second plate was better than the first which was a success. In the middle of our second portion, the manager came back and had asked how things were the second time. Since we had an experienced person with us who's been to other Medium Rare location in D.C. he was highly dissatisfied with this location. It was well worth a try. Next time I'm back in the East Coast, I'll make sure to give the other location a try. Oh and P.S.A. Don't be afraid to ask for more of their special sauce. Such simplicity! There's practically no menu, except a short drink list, and some choice desserts. Your server may mention a special side-dish/appetizer they're doing, but otherwise you're only asked how well you'd like your steak, and it's an open-book test. Although... I preferred the medium doneness. The meat itself was a sinewy sirloin cut which, at medium-rare (my preference), was somewhat hard to chew through. My husband and I had a craving for a good prime steak but didn't want to drop a quick $200 at the usual suspects. We are so happy we found Medium Rare and will certainly be back! As other reviewers have noted, there is only one option for dinner on the menu- fresh bread, a well dressed salad, and incredibly seasoned and tender prime steak with their secret sauce. All I can say is WOW. the simplicity of choice was freeing and each course exceeded expectations. We also opted for desert and their apple pie which was heavy on cinnamon and soft crusted. They have a reasonably priced but well rounded wine and beer menu (you can get Delirium on draft here) and the vibes were great. We also received a second helping of steak and fries that we weren't expecting which made for a wonderful late night snack. Stunning, Amazing, Delicious, Wonderful... are words I would NEVER use to describe this meal.   Dreadful, bland, hideous, absolutely disgusting is more apt a description for the chow they disguised as brunch. The classic eggs Benedict will turn your stomach as you shovel what could easily be mistaken as raw, unseasoned cat food into your quivering, reluctant pallet. I really wanted to like Medium Rare but it's just not worth it. Having one thing on the menu should mean that they make that ONE thing perfectly... deliciously... right? Unfortunately, it was quite the opposite. My husband always raved about Medium Rare in DC as he would always go for his protein fix. He loved the portions and the price. This location however, disappointed us both. The steaks came out chewy and overcooked even though we ordered it medium. The fries everyone was raving about were stale and nothing special. As mentioned in other reviews, the gravy tasted like it was pre-made and had a powdery consistency so that was a huge let down. We weren't charged for our meals which was nice of the manager to do, since I am sure she noticed how overcooked our steaks were. I don't see myself returning - I'd rather spend an extra $10-$20 and get my prime meat a real steakhouse. read more

Traveling to the DC area on business, I was walking around the neighborhood on a Monday night near my hotel looking for dinner and noticed this place. They had a menu on display in the window and some ads on the sidewalk claiming "best streak" and "best value". Hmm. I was skeptical and curious about the use of superlatives. But, the menu seemed reasonable, if limited - so I took a chance. Around 8:00 on a Monday night, it wasn't busy. I was greeted promptly by a friendly server and sat at the bar. About the "limited" menu: They offer a single dinner entrée (streak and fries). So, it makes the ordering decision easy. The only thing to decide was how I wanted my steak prepared. Medium. There's a French theme here, so the menu is bilingual which is a neat touch. The bartender was friendly and efficient and my order was brought out quickly. I had a portobello mushroom appetizer - it was decent. The steak was not what I was expecting. The cut is culotte and it is served with ("secret sauce") gravy and sliced with fries. My first thought was that it was skimpy portion - but the bartender explained that was 1/2 the order and they serve it that way so the temperature is consistent. Sure enough - ten minutes later I was brought another plate of steak and fries. I wouldn't have minded getting everything at once and having the option of the gravy on the side - but perhaps this is the French style. That aside - it was tasty. The fries had a very nice crispness and the seasoning and temperature was just right. I would've eaten more. The steak was served pre-sliced and was very lean and tender. The gravy was fine - but on the side would be a nice option perhaps. For an appetizer, two draught beers, steak & fries, dessert (carrot cake) and coffee, the bill was $57.10. Not bad. I struck up a conversation with the owner and the hostess (Maeve). Both were warm and shared their vision for the restaurant. It was a friendly vibe. I'll go back to try the brunch next time. Fun: They have French language lessons playing on audio loop in the bathroom. The lessons seem to be pickup lines. "Tu ressembles au soleil du matin"; "Je pense que je t'aime". Our table of foue shared a bottle of sparkling wine for the bread and salad courses. The bread and salad was all amazing, I'm not quite sure what sauce was on the salad but it was super simple and good. I got my steak medium rare (obviously) and it was honestly perfect. I didn't get all the way through the second course, because it was a lot of food. We shared a bottle of Bordeaux to compliment the entree. Best meal that I've had in DC, by a long shot. A terrible disappointment. When I see the word "steak" I think of a a thick slice of high-quality meat or fish. My plate contained eight thin strips of grainy meat that reminded me of my high school cafeteria too many years ago. Long after we finished our first portions, a server came by with a second helping that was no better than the first. The fries were ok. The meal started with a long wait followed by an excellent piece of warm crusty bread and a small pre-dressed salad. There is no choice of dressing. The only choice you can make when ordering is your drink and how you want your meat cooked. Given that every table in the restaurant is getting the same thing, the waits are surprisingly long. We ate early when the restaurant was still half empty, but it was nonetheless very loud: I measured 80 decibels. It was so loud that neither my dining companion nor I could hear our server and we had to lean-in and raise our voices to converse. So this is not a great venue for a date. The tables are very close together which was unpleasant for two reasons: we were subjected to the boisterous discussion of the romantic lives of the gentlemen at the next table and when the server was attending them, his rear end was six inches from my face. My go-to brunch spot - best deal in the DMV and consistently great service. For bottomless they're extremely generous with the champagne, letting us linger with more mimosas for a while after we're done eating, they don't try to rush you out or cut you off as soon as your time's up like other bottomless places. read more

This restaurant is a gem! Seated immediately and the place was packed! Cool ambiance/great vibe. Starter of warm bread with crusty exterior was delicious! Salad was fresh, perfectly dressed! Steak frites was cooked perfectly to order - medium rare! The sauce pushed it over the edge (make sure to order an extra side of it!) Finished off the meal with 8 layer moist chocolate cake, which tasted of rich dark cocoa, and an espresso! Loved the food! However, we were most impressed by the way the General Manager (Marina?) ran this place on a busy, pre-Valentine's Saturday night! She was very nice, hustled - non-stop, checked her watch and timed food consistently, took time to ask about our visit. Her high standards were not lost on us and it showed by how smoothly the entire place ran! Every restaurant should set their expectations this high! Customer service seems to be at an all time low these days and we were ecstatic to see that it was the main focus at Medium Rare! Very impressive! Great experience, will be back! Highly recommend! Visited last week. Service was good but food was not for humans. Pretty sure I ate cat food. The menu is set for 21 bucks. You get some bread. Nothing to complain about it's bread. You get a salad which is clearly bagged salad with no dressing. Surprise it was boring. Next you get a steak that looks like canned food from the dollar store. I asked for medium rare steak or whatever they call this meat and ironically it is BEYOND overcooked. Weird, you call your place Medium Rare and cannot even cook a steak right. Once you finally think you are done they bring you seconds and it is still over cooked. You had 2 chances to cook steak somewhat right and you failed! Ordering 1 drink and the set menu with tip comes around 45 bucks. Could have went to a chain and ate better. The only saving grace was our service was quick to get out of there. read more

Came for the soft-opening, and soft-opening it was. Minor kinks that are to be expected with a restaurants test-run that I'm sure will be worked out by the grand opening. Minor errors with food delivery, but lots of initiative with asking for clarification on the employees parts. They keep the drinks coming and your glasses full, no matter what you're having. The steak frites was delicious as usual and I always recommend having the sauce served on the side, as its addictive and then you're granted a little freedom as to how much you want to put on. The Bloody Marys had a good amount of alcohol and we finished it off with a slice of key lime pie. Went yesterday to celebrate my husband's birthday, and it was quite an underwhelming experience. We were told that reservations were required- ok, no problem. We arrived at 2:15 for our reservation and were promptly seated. Seeing as we had never visited before, we had a few questions. It was not until 15 min later that a server, who was not originally assigned to our section came and explained the menu and options. As a resident of Latitude, I was initially excited for this restaurant to open. I had heard good things about the other locations in the area, but never had the chance to actually go try one out. I was invited to the soft opening and have been back 2 times to try the brunch. The third trip was officially my last. For those unfamiliar, this is a fixed price menu. For $21, you get bread, salad, and 2 helpings of steak frites. If you only have one thing to offer, it should probably be pretty amazing. Unfortunately, the steak frites are not even decent. The slices of steak are subpar and come out barely warm. There's too much salt on the fries for them to be really enjoyable. Everything is covered in an overpowering sauce that I assume is supposed to mask all the poor flavors. I opted in for the apple pie dessert and even that was disappointing. I've had better frozen apple pies from the grocery store. The next visits were for brunch where there's actually a little more variety. Too bad the food is just as poor. Cold steak and even colder eggs. The main attraction is the $0.25 drinks (mimosas, screwdrivers, bloody marys). The old saying "you get what you pay for" rings true here as the alcohol in the drinks is nearly non-existent. Nothing really stood out as far as the service. It was good enough each time I went, but nothing outstanding. One positive thing I'll say is you won't go home hungry.
