I can't believe I haven't heard more people talking about Ambar in DC/Clarendon! We went to the Clarendon location for dinner yesterday and it was absolutely incredible. They offer an all-you-can-eat dinner menu (plus brunch), and every single thing we tried was delicious. We were a party of two and definitely overstuffed ourselves trying as much as we could Honestly, I think 3-4 people would be the perfect group size so you can share everything and sample more dishes comfortably. The food came out quickly, tapas-style, which made the whole experience even better. Great price for the amount and quality of food, excellent service, and such a fun ambiance. Came here for the first time on Mother's Day Mother's Day. They ran a special three dish Mother's Day to their brunch experience for $49.99. When we walked in, we thought it was gonna be packed because there were no reservations on OpenTable however they were able to see us right away. A very nice touch to add a stem of Rose for the women. I would say that I gave it a lower star rating not because the food was bad. It was actually delicious, but probably the experience itself. The restaurant felt chaotic, and even though all the tables were not completely packed of course there were flowers everywhere people gathering with grandmother's mother's children, etc We were seated in a two people table and all the top past dishes started to pile up very quickly. Instead of monitoring, the progress of the finished dishes and removing those dishes due to space constraint, the dishes came from the kitchen, almost on top of one another, and at one point I had to hold a dish in my hand in order to make space to put a dish on top of another flatbread pan/dish, making things super chaotic. Also dishes had to be put on top of the menu because in order to order additional food, you need to leave at least one copy of the menu at the table. Overall, again the flavors and taste were good, though I might have had similar dishes from other places, and my partner commented that some of it is actually very close to the Capital One landing at DCA. I would just say that it was more due to the chaos and just the way that all the dishes piled up on top of us we felt like we were we had to eat super quickly so that we could stack dishes ourselves and create room at the table. Since only a few blocks walk from our hotel in Arlington, we decided to check out their Greek/Mediterranean style buffet brunch on Sunday... This was just one of 3 locations in the DC area...and each one is beautifully decorated. Not sure if it was a seasonal decor, but we came during the Cherry Blossom season, and the pretty blossoms decor matched it! We opted for their AYCE Buffet Brunch for only $32...which included everything on the menu (minus dessert). Think if you add desserts, it's a bit more. Anyway, all I can say is WOW. Every plate I tried was truly delicious...and we both thoroughly enjoyed it! If I had to pick, my favorite was the Meat Pie and the White Bean Hummus with the Olivier spread. The buffet pricing was generous for all that we were able to try on the menu...well worth it! We had a great experience with the delicious food, wonderful staff, and warm, welcoming environment. I'd been wanting to try this place for a while and finally got around to it and was not disappointed. Everything was great. Our server was very helpful as well and I appreciate her time. My wife and I started with the urbenes, which was very good, and the white bean hummus, which was decent (not the best but decent). For our main meal I had the pork belly stuffed sour cabbage and found it absolutely delicious, along with a delicious bowl of veal soup. A real keeper. My wife tried the grilled trout and raved about it. She doesn't usually get trout but absolutely loved it. Before Ambar, I've never had Balkan cuisine, but I'm so glad that I have now! Because it's super delicious, affordable and in a very cute space. Now, it's one of my go to places. When you walk in you notice the beautiful flower canopy above the dining room. It's so pretty!! The perfect place for a date night or night out with friends. Now onto the food - for $49.99 you can get all you can eat Tapas. And trust me you'll want to try as many things as you can. My favorites are the lamb lasagna, cheese pie, drunken mussels, flatbread and short rib goulash. All so good. The plates are big enough to share with 2 people (if you want to share). Their raspberry cake is also light and delicious if you have room. I haven't tried their brunch, but I bet it's delicious too. I'll be back!! read more

So many options to choose from and you can't go wrong with any. I have yet to try something that I don't like. Ambar Clarendon totally delivers on that casual late-night or a la carte dinner when you're not in the mood for the the unlimited tapas style which seemed to be the go-to for a lot of parties we were sitting around. Great overall experience! AMBIANCE Made a reservation a few nights earlier for a high-top table. When we arrived, it was definitely popping since it was closing in on the holiday and Christmas/New Year's break. Definitely looked like a lot of company parties were a-happening...it was buzzing enough for groups, lively for sure, but not super quiet if that's what you'r looking for. We were immediately seated at our high-top table closer to the kitchen but next to the bar and were handed the all-you-can-eat unlimited 2-hour block tapas menu. We had previously decided to do the entree/a la carte menu instead so had to flag down the waiter for it. She immediately went to grab it but seemed like not many opted for that - we just knew we wanted specific items on the a la carte menu. SERVICE We ended up ordering the veal soup, tomato soup, eggplant moussake, goulash, and the complementary pita and cornbread. I was incredibly impressed by the speed of the kitchen. In less than 5 minutes, our soups arrived on dishes and our pita breads came shortly after. Our waitress was attentive and the general manager came by to ask how things were and loved his animated energy! FOOD Loved the warmth of the veal soup and a solid portion of veal in my opinion; tomato soup was also good. After finishing, our two main entrees of the eggplant mousakka and beef goulash with orzo (instead of egg noodles) arrived on the table in less than 10 minutes later. The eggplant moussaka was deliciously well-seasoned and had a good amount of eggplant and tomato sauce and the nice still-semi crunchy potato slice in between. The beef goulash had orzo instead of the usual egg noodles we expected, but taste-wise it was excellent and provided an ample amount of protein -- no complaints there at all. We also ordered the trout over lentils which came in 3 pre-portioned fillets that easily came off the skin. Great taste and we were definitely full at the end with leftovers like the beef goulash we took to go. Solid quality and flavor of food is definitely solid. I can see it as a solid spot for casual. Overall, we had a great first time experience at Ambar. We've talked about going forever and really happy we finally did. For 42.99 it's an all you can eat tapas style which works out well for larger parties. Most of these places are iffy when it comes to service as they tell you you only have 2hrs but then take forever to come back and even ask if you want more. Here though, someone was always asking us if we wanted more (we even had the manager telling us an empty table wasn't acceptable to him as we were breathing between dishes lol). Plates were cleared just as fast as they were delivered. We ordered quite a few dishes and There were only a few complaints in regards to the food: - Salmon Benedict was cold and it was pretty clear the poached eggs were bulk made and stored making it not super enjoyable served Luke warm - The flatbread we got was over seasoned with the oregano so much that it ruined the taste of the rest - Caramel Apple waffle was fantastic! However, really wish they would heat up the Apple pie mixture; it's just weird to have a cold filling on top of a warm waffle (maybe personal preference) - Strawberry Waffles could really do without the Nutella! Just make a strawberry filling or chopped strawberries and a maple syrup. - The shakahuka (no pic) was probably the most disappointing; it was really watery, more sauce than anything and oddly nothing served with it. Most of the time you have bread or some potato, but here, nothing so once you break the egg it was a literal soup which was sad - The potato hash (fried potatoes) were bottom of the bin. I think we got the last of what was bulk fried as they were super crunchy and mostly not edible. I'm sure if you get fresh ones they are probably great, but honestly they need a sauce (creme/sour cream/spicy tomato). We actually soaked them in the shakshuka juice which was decent Highlights and Recommended: Mediterranean omelet (no pic), Balkan Salad (I ate 2!), Fried Chicken Sandwich and Caramel Apple Waffle All of the sweet dishes we got were great! Waffles weren't over fried, mini donuts were perfect! Would only decrease the Nutella as they were all swimming in it. We did order the $0.99 mimosa which were better mixed than most bottomless places (you can see the bubbles in the pitchers and glasses) We did order a Mango Lemonade which was basically juice, very limited vodka. As mentioned, overall we had a great experience and majority of the food was good, including the scrambled eggs and bacon which are not pictured (we all know what they look like ). There was only one thing that was confusing to us once we got the bill. We were charged for a food experience and a drink experience (ultimately coming to $42.99/pp). We had no idea what the "drink experience" was since we were still charged 0.99/mimosa or $2.99 for elevated alcoholic drink. It appears that you can order bottomless non-alcoholic drinks (espresso, coffee, soda, tea, etc...) for the drink experience, but this was never communicated to us when we got there (we also said we had never been there). This also seems extreme for people who don't want or don't partake in that option. It was an added $12pp that we didn't even use (and didn't even know about) Had we known we might have had coffee or a latte-- these types of drinks aren't even listed on the menu as an option which feels very undermining when you're being charged for them without a choice. We had such a great experience at Ambar. Our server, Ana, was excellent and attentive with our gluten allergy - gave us a separate menu and helped make us decisions as the menu was overwhelming for us at first! The atmosphere was incredible, just absolutely beautiful and so lively. The food was impeccably spiced, and came out in small portions (such as two servings of skewers and meatballs with each order). There was quite a variety with the menu, and we were eager to try so much. My absolute favorites: Balkan Kebab, Drunken Mussels, Halloumi! I wish I had a second stomach to eat everything on the menu. I made a dinner reservation a month in advance using Open Table for 10. Only 8 ultimately came, but we weren't penalized for this. We were promptly seated downstairs, where the ambiance is a little quieter and less chaotic. We opted to do the $50/person unlimited small plates deal, which was absolutely the way to go. It's basically tapas style small dishes for the table to share, which is my favorite way to eat. I love Balkan food and this did not disappoint! Highlights included the halloumi, cevapi, and lamb lasagna. As someone who grew up on Ukrainian food, the mushroom flatbread flavors were very familiar, and the pork belly cabbage rolls were basically holubtsi - one of my favorite Ukrainian foods. The veggie, chicken, and ground meat dishes were all nicely spiced, and the drinks were inventive and tasty. I wish I caught our server's name, but he was fantastic. The staff made sure empty plates were promptly cleared and kept my water glass full. The street level was bright and had a lot of visual interest. Absolutely horrible food! A complete disaster. That something you see in that plate was definitely not Chevapi, although that is what we ordered. Horrendous quality meat. They served 10 Chevapi with enough meat to make one single, standard Chevap. It was way too salty and it was served with green salad - neither traditional nor tasty. I am from Tuzla, Bosnia and I know how Burek "the meet pie" and how Chevapi or as they refer to it at this restaurant "Balkan Kebab" should taste. There is no such thing as "Balkan Kebab"! That doesn't exist! Kebab is a Turkish word and a Turkish dish and even Adana Kebab resembles nothing of the sorts served at Anbar! Anbar is a disaster design only to make money. It is an embarrassment to allow the owners to attach term "Balkan" to any of it's ambience, completely 100% void of Cheif (keif) which is a must have in Balkan lifestyle, culture, cuisine and restaurants! Do you really think we eat with disco beat music!!!! NO WE DO NOT! What can you improve? The only thing you can do to improve is change the classification of the restaurant to some other cuisine from the Balkan cuisine because that restaurant doesn't make nor sell Balkan dishes, doesn't not offer Balkan ambience or service. The Balkan food experience was new to me! Highly recommend this location as they have mastered the aesthetics and ambiance experience for their customers. I was here with a few friends that were in town and it was a wonderful place. The customer service from the team was excellent especially in giving feedback on dishes I have never tried before. The unlimited small plates experience was something that had the entire table excited to try from the vegetarian to meat dishes and they come out relatively quickly from the time you order. Really cool and lovely Balkan restaurant for a special occasion! We visited for my brother's birthday with a large group of 9 (including a toddler) and everyone enjoyed their meals. We did the all you can eat option, which was very fun! I found some of the dishes to be much better and more flavorful than others, and things felt a bit rushed/cramped at times, but it was still a great value for the amount of food we were able to try. The small plates are quite small, so prepare to order a lot of options to fill up! The drinks are just ok, in my opinion, so I'd stick to the food and just get wine or a soft drink (or just water, tbh - Balkan food is quite salty!) to accompany the meal. Service was attentive and friendly, though again, quite hurried at times. My only drink was an espresso martini (not included in the $0.99 and $2.99 brunch drinks) and it was so delicious. My party of five tried almost everything on the menu and the highlights were the beef kebab, cheese pie, potato hash, pulled pork benedict, balkano slider, and the doughnuts. The lunch AYCE (all-you-can-eat) tapas here is an absolute hidden gem! Not only is it a fantastic deal, but it also lets you explore quite a bit of small plates inspired by rich Balkan flavors. I highly recommend starting with the velvety veal soup -- it's savory, hearty, and perfect to warm you up. The pan-seared trout is also a delight, beautifully crisp on the outside and flakey and soft within. Don't forget the roasted cauliflower - it's very flavorful with the pesto sauce it comes with. Also, I recommend you get the spread of creamy hummus with their house pita. The ambiance is stunning, especially with the lovely autumn-themed decor. Ambar has been my long-time favorite ever since it's opening years back. I have celebrated multiple memorable dates here and even my birthday. The interior of Arlington location is very open and cheerful and always gives me positive vibes. I have to admit that over the years the quality of the food has dropped. That said it's still acceptable and there's no other place where you can find many of the dishes offered here. This visit was for lunch which now has an option of unlimited experience too which is a pleasant addition. The price is a steal for an unlimited lunch - just $28 for all-you-can-eat savory items. The service was great as always. The waiter had to close his shift while I was still at the table and he introduced me to the other waiter who will continue helping me. This was a nice warm transfer. The only concern I have is that I did have stomach pain and terrible heartburn for the rest of the day which is not normal. I might have it once a year or so, and only after eating out. I'm suspecting that this is due to the quality of cooking oil or other fats that might be added to the food. I'm hoping for the management to consider healthy alternatives to what they might be using. read more

Mmmm mmmmmm! What a gastronomic adventure! The best way to experience the deliciousness offered is to partake in the endless small plates. The choices are vast, from spreads and charcuterie, to grilled and slow cooked fares. Meats, vegetables, breads, hummus, and breads. So much to enjoy. The portions are appropriately small, and if there is something you fall in love with, you can always asked for another plate. I wish I took more pictures of our food, but quite frankly, I forgot because I was enjoying eating everything we ordered! The staff was excellent in every manner. Helpful, friendly, and accommodating. And the ambience was wonderful. The upstairs was incredibly crowded and noisy, but in a joyful way. People out and about with loved ones, enjoying a meal. It should be loud! We ended up at a table downstairs, which was less noisy but very intimate and middle eastern. I loved it! I definitely recommend doing the unlimited dinner here. The food is a lot of small bites and variety so definitely good to try all. The cheese and dips taste really good. The proteins are a toss up. The veggies could definitely use some work. Given that it is unlimited, we noticed that some servers were really attentive while other tables (like ours) had to flag them down. I think overall, a nice fancy date night or something, but wouldn't splurge just to try (splurge knowingly). read more

My friends and I had a good dinner at ambar. We did the all you can eat special. The dishes that come out are small but they come out really fast. We tried a lot of everything. I think the little ground beef skewers were my favorite. I also liked the dips that we started out with. And the mussels were really good too. Everything was pretty good. Dropped in for an unplanned lunch and enjoyed my first Balkan experience. Server was very attentive and thoughtful. I enjoyed all the salads I chose. The lasagna was terrific as was the platter of dips and mussels. The brussel sprouts were a bit tough and the chicken stroganoff wasn't very flavorful. There was an older couple with their dog inside which was a bit off-putting. I understand service animals are welcome but this little guy didn't have on a vest. The bathrooms could use some upgrading/TLC. All in all, a good afternoon in a pretty locale. read more
