I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Medium Rare! The steak was tender with a smoky char. I don't usually eat much red meat, but I almost finished both of my portions. That sauce on top was delicious! I could probably eat it as a soup (I think it was peppercorn with a hint of mushroom). Plus, it's a great value since you get that second portion of steak frites. The fries were perfectly fatty and crispy, and the bread came out hot and fresh. I could have easily eaten more of it, but I didn't want to fill up before the main course! The salad was good, though I think I'd prefer to eat it alongside the steak rather than as a separate starter. We also ordered a portobello mushroom on the side, which complemented the steak really well. Service was a little slow since it was a Friday night, so it took some time for the steaks to arrive. My medium steak was tasteless and tuff. French Toast was decent. Salad appetizer was decent. $.25 drinks the tequila sunrise was sugary and mimosa flat. We were sat right under the speaker. They kids hated it. It was so loud that we had to yell across the table as we tried to pass the time. It looks like they didn't charge us for one meal, but that was not compensation. I went to Medium Rare this past weekend with one of my friends to celebrate two of our friends' engagement, and it was definitely a vibe. We were looking for a Sunday brunch spot and were able to lock in a 10:30 AM reservation, which was clutch. Especially since it was Easter and I needed a last minute resy. Plus, there's a solid amount of street parking around, so no stress there. I really love how simple but still unique their brunch menu is--it just hits every time. I got the steak and eggs, and that sauce? Yeah... it does what it needs to do every single time. Super flavorful. And the fact that bottomless mimosas come with the meal? Say less. Brunch runs about $40 per person, which honestly is a steal for everything you're getting. We even took a few shots to celebrate, and I loved that when I noted it was an engagement, they came out with a dessert for the table which was real nice touch. If there's one thing in life I love, steak frites is certainly up there! Medium Rare is one place that I can rely on for a plate of steak frites. I've been to the Columbia location but recently moved to Arlington. The menu is pre fixe so if you are hoping to order something that isn't steak frites (or the vegan portobello mushroom alt) you're going to be disappointed. The menu comes with sourdough bread; I love a good thing of sourdough, even bake my own from time to time, but I can never enjoy the bread here -- it's just too hard and I always fear I'll crack a tooth. The salad is just ok. I'm not a big fan of the dressing. Naturally, of course, you come for the steak frites. Which is great. The steak one would argue may be a little under-seasoned but the black peppercorn sauce really makes the dish pop. And I recommend ordering extra sauce on the side so you can drizzle it on your fries (thank me later). The service is just ok. I say ok because the three times I've been here, I've had to wait over an hour for my server to offer the complimentary second plate of steak frites. I get how busy the place can be but you can imagine the major whiplash i get when everyone else around us some who were seated AFTER me for their helping within 20 mins between finishing their first and second plate. Also during my last visit I was with my sister-in-law and my server and hostess failed to offer us a bowl of water for the dog. But all the other dogs that were there had complimentary water bowls. I do find it interesting that the only people of color that had a dog wasn't offered some water for our dog but I digress. The indoor seating is nice, I like that the bar TVs have sports playing all the time. The outdoor dining area feels a lot more spacious though. And if you go when it's a little chilly out, don't worry, there's heated lamps outside. The parking situation has variety. There's street parking outside and behind the establishment and there is a little parking garage around the corner but the spots there are very limited and if you go during peak hours you might not find a spot in that parking lot. Dessert menu gives you some freedom between apple pie, carrot cake, chocolate cake, and a ice cream sundae. It gives off the impression of high quality food with a bit of classic diner charm. I love the concept, but the execution could be better. Starting with the positives, the bread was nice and the salad was fresh. There are some great touches, like the cheesy French lesson in the bathroom and the paper table tops where the server writes your order. Brunch offering one dollar all you can drink is a deal (the menu says 25 cent per drink but it is actually $1 all you can drink). The ambiance is cute overall, though the seats are quite close together. Now for the downsides. The steak portion was very small, and I was still quite hungry even after the bread and salad. The steak itself was not crispy or very hot, and it did not taste like great quality. Maybe my expectations were too high, especially with such a small, focused menu, but I was hoping for a better steak. Service unfortunately made things worse. Our server seemed eager to rush us out. He brought me a drink we did not order, and by the time I finished my first drink to have the extra one, it was watered down. For our third round, we ordered after he had already dropped off the check and he no longer seemed interested in serving us. We had to ask multiple times and even flag down another employee. I've never had to walk out of a restaurant before, but that changed today. Apparently reservations don't mean much at Medium Rare. The place was packed with parties left waiting, completely filling the inside and spilling out on the side walk. To let this happen on Mother's Day, of all days, is pretty shameful. After waiting more than 30 minutes past our reservation time, we gave up and left. We won't be returning. (For the record, this isn't on the staff, who were clearly doing their best while running around trying to keep things afloat. Tried this place for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't know what to expect but the salad was pretty good and the steak was already cut up but it was nice to know that after your first plate is eaten you can get a Second serving of steak and fries ! If it was one plate I think it would have thought it was too expensive but I guess with everything it's not a bad price and the steak was quite good. We were a big party so the waiter was a little ruder than I would have liked but overall it wasn't a bad experience. The one down side was that we brought a cake and the cake cutting price was more than how much I paid for dinner which I felt was a little ridiculous. I would recommend not cutting your cake here. My first trip to Medium Rare in 7 years - well worth the wait. My wife and I had an early dinner on Friday after work. We were the first table seated, and by the time we finished 2/3 of all tables were occupied. If you haven't tried MR, it's prix fixe. You get awesome French French bread and butter, and a delicious salad. The main course is culotte steak and delicious fries with a tasty pepper sauce. An interesting thing they do is they serve your steak and fries in 2 servings, so when you finish your first plate they bring you another hot and fresh. The culottes steak is a cheaper cut, so don't expect a steakhouse style steak, but it is perfectly prepared and very tender. I barely had to use my knife; I cut most pieces with my fork. The service was fast and friendly. The meal is 31.95 per person, so dinner for 2 with tax was right at 70 bucks, and we had 1 serving of steak, 2 servings of fries, and 2 pieces of bread to take home. We had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. The service was terrible from start to finish. Our waitress rarely checked on our table, forgot several items we ordered, and everything took an extremely long time to arrive. The worst part was our second round of steaks -- she completely forgot about them, and we ended up waiting almost another 15- 20 minutes before they finally came out. A fun restaurant with an interesting concept! Our waiter was super welcoming, and helped make the experience fun. Our bread, salad, and drinks all came out very fast. The steak was fine - the sauce is AMAZING. I took off a star because I asked for medium and they definitely cooked it medium rare (and my steak looked the same as everyone on my table despite the difference in order) which I usually wouldn't care too much about except their specialty is steak, so that was a little disappointing. Medium Rare is the epitome of KISS (keep it simple, ___), which worked wonderfully for me. The menu is pretty straight forward - steak with fries. You just tell your server how you want the steak cooked and leave the rest up to Medium Rare. As someone who can be a bit indecisive when it comes to menus, Medium Rare's system is perfect for me. From start to finish, I had a wonderful experience because everything was on point - the food, the service, the cocktails, and the ambiance. I thought it was quite considerate that the manager (I think) stopped by our table to make sure everything was going well. Also, I thought it was a nice touch that the bartender personality delivered our drinks to the table. I'm not sure if that's a normal thing, but I'll pretend as if it was. Like I mentioned earlier, you pretty much have one option - steak and fries. What surprised me was that diners receive TWO rounds of steak and fries. I was so shocked (in a good way) when the server returned with a second round. I kind of wished that I save some stomach real estate by not eating so many fries during my first round. *Oh well, live and learn.* I thought the steak quality was fine. While the secret sauce was very rich and tasty, I wish that I asked for it on the side. I'm kind of Team "a steak does not need any sauce if it's already seasoned". However, in my defense, I did not know about the secret sauce until the plate from the 1st round arrived to the table. Fortunately, the restaurant does not drown the steak it its secret sauce. Although you have one option for food, you will have quite a few options for cocktails. Normally, I like to try a few cocktails during a dinner. However, the Hibiscus Margarita was so delicious (and strong) that I stuck with that throughout the meal. One of the things that I liked about the margarita - it packed a punch, BUT it was not overly sweet. The energy of Medium Rare gave me relaxed vibes because I tend to find many steakhouses to be a bit stuffy. However, Medium Rare seems like a place where folks can come to relax and not take themselves too seriously - unless when it comes to steak and fries. I wonder if this had to do with the fact that the restaurant is pretty close to George Mason University. For instance, you'll receive pieces of Bazooka Joe bubble gum when it's time to pay your check. Overall, I could not ask for a better experience during my Arlington trip. While I probably will not make it to this location in the near future (since I do not live in or near Arlington), I definitely hope to visit the other locations in Bethesda, MD and/or Washington DC. read more

Medium Rare is a popular DC-based chain serving up what seems to be an unbeatable deal: a pre-fixe menu of bread, salad, and two portions of steak frites for $31.95. My party of eight made a reservation for a Sunday night at 6:00pm around 4 days in advance, and we were immediately seated when we arrived. The restaurant itself is located right next to the Silver Line Virginia-Square Metro Station near the heart of Arlington. The space itself is sleek and dark, though the ambiance is quite loud and buzzy. You're led to a table covered in paper, where the server will ask everyone what their preference is for how they like their steak cooked - they will then draw a grid delineating everyone's preference for further reference later on. Everyone starts with their Artisan Rustic Bread, which is served with butter. The bread is warm and toasted, and tastes homemade, but we found it overly crusty, and the butter is extremely cold when it arrives at the table, so it's practically impossible to spread. Moving on from that, they bring out their Mixed Green Salad - the base of the salad is nice, crunchy, and fresh, with romaine lettuce, mixed greens, and tomatoes, but we found it to be overdressed (practically glistening with an oily vinaigrette, and too salty). The first round of steak came out around 10 minutes after the salad service - I will say, props to the kitchen for handling a busy restaurant so well. I ordered my steak rare, while most of my companions ordered medium-rare, and one member of my party ordered medium-well. For the first round of steak, it's around a 5oz portion served with crispy fries and a "secret sauce." Everyone's steak was cooked to their liking, and while it's not the highest-quality piece of steak, I will say, it's elevated with the sauce, which is creamy, savory, and slightly herbaceous (the perfect umami level). I asked for a portion of salad with my steak as opposed to the fries (as my party remarked that the fries were overly salty), and they were happy to oblige, although again, my salad was overdressed. For the second portion, they bring it out in sizzling hot pans, and this is where the meal started to go downhill. They brought out all eight portions in the same hot pan, meaning all eight of the portions were cooked to medium-well, even though most of us had preferred rare/medium rare. I asked for my steak to be cooked rare, and they were nice enough to make me another portion, although that was overcooked too when they brought it out. They do give a more generous portion of fries in the second round, and gave me another plate of salad with dressing on the side when I requested it. They have an extensive dessert menu (all $12, with apparently huge portions), but none of us really wanted to eat any more. We weren't all that full (there wasn't too much steak, actually, even with a second portion), but we didn't want to spend much more money than the pre-fixe menu. Overall, this is a nice concept for a restaurant, but there were a few aspects of the meal that were subpar. While you're getting a better value than going out to a steakhouse, I would prefer to shell out a bit more for a higher-quality experience and dishes executed to a better standard. They also tack on a 20% service charge for large parties, so I would be aware of that. Go in with tempered expectations and this is a decent spot, but I wouldn't venture back again. read more

A DC classic institution. Don't worry about looking at the menu before coming to decide on what you're getting. There's only one thing on the menu- steak frites- and they do it well. The steak frites are excellent. The steak is well seasoned and sliced thin so easy to eat. That being said even with thin pieces, they cook the steak perfectly to the requested temperature (at least my medium rare is always on point). The fries are nice and crunchy. And *spoiler* they bring an extra round of steak frites! You won't leave hungry. I want to call out that their steak sauce is PHENOMENAL. It's similar to a creamy au poivre sauce but the flavor and texture complement both the steak and fries perfectly. I always ask for extra. The salad that comes in the beginning is also tasty and fresh- food start to the dinner. Also don't sleep on the dessert. The ice cream sundae is huge and delicious. Perfect for sharing. This place is definitely in need of fairer reviews. If your goal is to go out to a fancy steakhouse, spend $70+ per person, and have the best steak imaginable then don't come here. It'd be silly to compare the quality of a coulotte steak with a ribeye from Ruth's Chris. Some of these negative reviewers just had really uninformed expectations. I saw a photo of a well-done steak in a review of someone complaining it was tough. If you order a well done coulotte steak and want to complain then you can really only blame yourself. The bread & butter was good and the olive oil dressed salad was great! You get two portions of steak frites and both the fries and steak met all my expectations. The steak is seasoned well and primarily relies on the sauce for flavor. The patio is also super cute and I highly recommend sitting at an outdoor table if you can. As I saw in another review, "efficient" is probably the most accurate way to describe the service. The waitstaff was all very no-nonsense and just wants to clear your table as fast as possible, but that's more or less an accurate French experience.
