I just wrote a review on a place in PA with a Abeulo in the name, and I thought of Abeula and Metro 29 Diner (I'll explain in a bit). When I think of 29, I think of the area I often drive, Columbia to Silver Spring, MD stretch of 29, but I don't think about the long highway in Virginia, which cuts across Arlington, Fairfax County to SW Virginia (Lynchburg) & into Carolinas. I visited Metro 29 Diner twice. December 2021 was pretty good experience, and March 2022 was not so good; so kind of a mixed bag overall. Metro 29 is a subpar version of Silver Diner. In my opinion, just go down the road from here to Ballston for Silver Diner. On Saturday, December 4, 2021, a Meetup group was meeting here for brunch, and I was determined to drive across DC to get over to Arlington for brunch with this Meetup group for a White Elephant gift exchange. I knew one person. Ended up with some candles I never ended up using. I met a few new friends here, who I mainly lost touch with, but still barely in touch with Walt. Service was pretty good for our large group. I ended up getting a corned hash omelet and hash brown, which were both very good. The funny thing was the organizer of the Meetup group, an older gentleman, was trying to be friendly with the Hispanic server trying to speak Spanish to her. The problem was he kept calling her Abuela. Abuela means grandma! The 2nd visit was on Saturday, March 5, 2022. My friend from that same Meetup wanted to play Catan, and I was in this general direction. We agreed to meet for dinner at Metro 29. It was pretty busy and wasn't conducive for a game as the table wasn't that big, and we didn't want to take up a spot at a busy time. Her office was across the street from here, so we ate & gamed at her office. Service was unmemorable. Food was kind of mediocre; I think I might have gotten some sandwich. I'm pretty sure my friend got a burger. My friend was charged like 75 cents for the lettuce on the burger. My friend thought it was absolutely ridiculous, and I frankly agreed with her on this one. Totally bogus they would charge for the lettuce on a burger. My friend is a harsher critic of restaurants than I am typically. Like my 4-star review might be a 2-star, and in this case my 3-star might be a dreaded 1-star for her. She exclaimed to me never coming back here again. I'm not going to go that far, but I'd need some catalyst to get me over to Arlington (which I was there 4 days ago) but is rare; I feel there are many better eating options in Arlington, but I wouldn't completely rule out Metro 29 diner if someone was strongly pushing for it, I'd just go along but not one I'd go out of my way for. read more

Metro 29 is such a cute little diner and we had the best breakfast here this morning. It was a week day so the diner felt extra cozy as there were not that many people and the vibe was a lot more leisurely than the weekend. That definitely contributed to our positive experience we think as from the moment My boyfriend and I stopped in, everything from the food to the service was such a great experience. He ordered the crab cake Benedict and loved it. The eggs were poached perfectly and it was just an all around really solid dish. The home fries were a little underdone, but honestly it didn't take away from how much he enjoyed his meal. I got the French toast with strawberries and whipped cream and added a side of sausage and bacon. It was exactly what I wanted and the bacon was perfectly crispy. As a picky eater I feel like I'm never satisfied by other people's bacon so this made me so happy! The service really made this place stand out. Our waitress was amazing, my boyfriend's coffee cup was never empty, and she even took the time to tell me the most cost efficient way to order, which I genuinely appreciated. You can tell she really cared and knew the menu well. The sweetest part was that she overheard us talking about my boyfriend's birthday and surprised him with a cake and singing. Pretty expensive for a diner. The food came out a little cold. The potatoes were slightly undercooked as well. When you leave spending over $45+ dollars for breakfast it feels like you shouldn't have any trouble. Service was elite and quick, we went on New years and all of the staff was very friendly. They all had New Years stuff on! The diner felt as if you stepped back in time. Loved the reflective siding everywhere! They did have a bar for those who like a morning mimosas. The signage and atmosphere felt like you were stepping back in time. This was featured on DDD. The Challah Bread French Toast was the highlight of the meal. As much as I'd like to try the other diners around, Metro 29 is quickly becoming my go-to - it's already my son's favorite for their silver dollar pancakes. I was thinking of giving this place 4 stars initially since the food wasn't exceptional, but - staff were super friendly, welcoming, and efficient...coffee always topped off if we wanted it - very clean looking - food came out fairly quick both times we dined here and nicely presented - plenty of parking, though it could be a bit challenging for busier times...but wait isn't long All those things combined with the fact that service is still top notch regardless of how busy they are, earn them a 5 star in my book. This is a great classic diner! Everything by you would expect out of a classic diner, an experience you don't get much anymore. I met up with a friend for breakfast and the menu had all the greatest hits and I got the veggie omelet which came with hashbrowns and toast. Food is what you'd expect. Potatoes need salt, but aren't too greasy. The omelette is cooked well, but needs salt. The sausage that I added wasn't that great. I've been here before with family. We came again because I was craving diner food and not Silver Diner which is not really "diner" food anymore. I love the ambience of this place. The servers are fast and friendly. Our meals came right away. The only downside of this place is the price. $11 for ONE freaking egg?!? Are they insane? $14 for 2 slices of challah French toast is a little pricey but those eggs. Yikes. The French toast filled me up like a 1/2 lb burger and fries. So, worth the $14. Their French toast is outstanding; you can really taste that everything is made from scratch, even the bread. The homemade potatoes are absolutely amazing and full of flavor. I got a coffee which was decent but a little on the pricier side that I would expect from a diner and an egg sandwich. Cheese was extra. Bagel was also extra my bad for misreading: Sandwiches on Bagel, Pita or English Muffin 1.50¢ extra That sandwiches come on something else, and bagels are part of the extra list. Oh well! I came here off the recommendation of a few coworkers and so far they're 0/2 for the food recommendations. First with the good, the service was fast and friendly. Love that. The diner looked pretty clean even though we got there just after a lunch rush I'm sure. The food was cooked perfectly; everything was the right color, temperature and consistency but unfortunately everything on mine and my bfs plate completely lacked in flavor. I'm talking simple salt and pepper- there was none. If you have dietary restrictions and like to season your food once you receive it at your table maybe you'll appreciate the lack of seasoning but it wasn't for me. I love diner food. This is a cute diner that is frequent by locals all day long. They have deals for senior citizens, and serve decent food in large portions. This was my third time going to Metro Diner unfortunately this will be my last going the food was okay not necessarily anything special I had the same pancakes and one egg with the sausage I didn't even get to eat the sausage seeing how it was covered in oil. The service is great don't get me wrong our server was amazing she was respectful and helpful I appreciate her service towards us. Now the another reason I won't be going back is because of the cleaning service it's disgusting on the chair you can really see all of the finger prints on of people and it's so bad it's has a dark black color the menus are sticky and the pages are stuck together. The floor is as so sticky that our shoes got stuck when trying to walk out of the diner I would say that was my last straw for this diner. This is definitely a long time favorite. I grew up near the area so we used to go there often growing up. It's a nostalgic place. They still have the big chocolate chip cookies we'd get as kids and they still look and taste the same as I remember. We usually get the french toast for breakfast since it's one of the best items on the menu. It's still the best french toast I've ever had from any place. They make the bread in-house so they cut them as huge slices. It melts in your mouth. So good. We also got the cheese danish which was gigantic but very tasty. It was sweet but not too sweet. It's usually really packed and busy on weekends but we went during a time when it's not so busy so we were seated quickly at a booth near the windows which was nice to see outdoors. The server came often to refill our coffees which we appreciated. You pay the check up at the front when you're done. Also at the front there's a fridge/case with cakes and desserts. The diner looks like a classic American diner outside and in. Art deco decor rules the interior. The staff is very attentive, constantly refilling coffee cups, water glasses, and checking on us. The portions are huge. The prices are a bit high, but again, the portions are huge. My daughter asked for strawberries on her waffle. First: Top notch service. And not just for a diner, but by any standards. My wife and I visited when she was at the tail end of a pregnancy, and their manager(?) saw us walking towards the door and was immediately there to hold it open. We went with breakfast foods, but the menu seemed to have some great lunch and dinner options, too. I ordered a bit off menu... I asked for the challah French toast, but with strawberries and whipped cream, which they only list as a topping option for their Belgian waffle. They accommodated that request and didn't apply any unusual up charge. It was very good. Their French toast is on very thick cut challah, which makes for a very fluffy, and very filling, meal. The side of bacon I ordered came as a generous portion... not the two measly strips you get at some restaurants. There was enough that, when it arrived, my wife and I decided to split it and we both had as much as we wanted. The interior vibe is mostly standard diner with a touch of Pennsylvania "family restaurant." It's clean, comfortable, and well maintained. They also deserve some bonus points for good gardening work on the flower beds outside... It's not a make or break thing for a diner, but it makes for a more pleasant entrance and exit and shows that they mind the details. Amazing breakfast spot! My favorite is the French toast and the chocolate chip pancakes. Ordering pancakes is pretty standard across all restaurants, but these are the best I've ever had. The dough is so fluffy, but they also have the consistency of a perfectly cooked banana bread..okay that might not make sense to you, but you will know what I mean when you eat them. Their desserts also look amazing (peep one of my pics). I have yet to get one, but next time I am there I will grab one of those eclaires. The French Toast was a thicc boy and very well cooked. Load it up with butter and syrup you will feel like you are taking a bite out of warmth. How Have We Missed This Diner?! I recently had the pleasure of dining at Metro 29 Diner for a group dinner, and I can't believe it took me this long to discover it! This classic diner exudes a welcoming, retro charm, complete with ample parking and an atmosphere that instantly feels comfortable and familiar. The service was outstanding. Our waitress seamlessly handled multiple orders, modifications, and separate checks as our group trickled in--a feat that is often a challenge but was executed flawlessly. Water glasses were kept full, food arrived promptly and exactly as ordered, and every interaction with the staff was met with a smile. Metro 29 boasts an extensive menu that covers all the diner staples, from hearty breakfasts (available all day--a great touch!) to seafood, roasts, steaks, chops, and even Italian and Greek specialties. I opted for the Mykonos Greek Salad, generously topped with grilled chicken, while a friend ordered the honey mustard chicken salad, which astonishingly came with four chicken breasts! The portions here are enormous, which is great for value but might be a bit overwhelming--many of us, including the seniors in our group, ended up packing leftovers for another meal. A senior menu with smaller portions would be a thoughtful addition. Despite the tempting array of house-made cakes, pies, pastries, and cookies, we were far too full to indulge--but that just gives me another reason to return soon. If you're looking for a diner with excellent service, a massive menu, and generous portions, Metro 29 is a must-visit. I can't wait to go back! read more
