I've driven by this Arlandria restaurant many times over the years, intrigued by the apparent misspelling of Waffle on its awning. It appears as "Wafle Shop". So yesterday, I decided to finally give it a try. Wafle Shop is very small with only 5 or 6 tables, with all but one occupied when I arrived. It's clean enough inside but certainly has a gritty feel. This eatery definitely caters to the nearby Salvadorean residents. A Spanish-language telenovela was playing on the TV. The waitresses were Latina and all the customers were Latino men (but for me). So now, I'm not sure that Wafle is a misspelling, but instead the Spanish version of the word. Wafle Shop has a big menu. Of course they have lots of waffles, but they have lunch/dinner items too. I ordered my default breakfast entrée: country fried steak. The home fries were original to me: thinly sliced potatoes with butter and a golden crust, like scalloped potatoes. The country-fried steak was pretty good but had a bit of a gamey flavor. My husband wanted a waffle so we stopped here before leaving the area. It was about 1pm on a Sunday, there were people sitting outside but we were able to get a table inside. The restaurant gives old school diner vibes. The menu had plenty of options. I got the french toast breakfast with beef sausage link and added a side of grits. My husband got the chicken and waffles. It took a little while for the food to come out since it's made to order and it's a smaller establishment. My husband's wings did Not look like the picture from the menu which had whole chicken wings on a waffle. He got the wingettes that typically come from the frozen appetizer section of the grocery store. He did enjoy his waffle though. My French toast was ok. The grit were super runny and for the cheese in them it was a a piece of the pre wrapped slices. Definitely could've used a spoon to eat them but the waiter did not come back to check on us for a while so I tried to make it work. We had order sodas to drink and were brought a can, I thought it would be a fountain drink but we made it work. I also thought the beef link sausage was going to be a half smoke but it was regular breakfast links just beef instead of pork. They tasted ok. Here's what we ordered: *French Toast ($10) - decent price for a hefty portion of food. Comes with powdered sugar. Pretty disappointed today. Ordered food from GrubHub...got someone else's order completely. Then when my boyfriend went to pick up our food they still got it wrong. I asked for gravy on the side but sadly it was on it and it sat for a while so I got a soggy chicken fried steak and home fries which I asked for fries. It seems trivial but damn...when the first thing you try and do for your day off consistently gets messed up...it sets a precedent that totally sucks. Once we discussed about the missing food, the owner decided to lie and say the Uber Eats driver stolen the two items. She did not acknowledge nor apologize for the missing items. One Sunday, I have been craving waffles. Well, technically, I had been craving waffles for days. Quick google search for waffles in Virginia pulled up The Waffle Shop. Located in the North Del Ray, this restaurant is from another era. Back in the 1950s, Waffle Shop was a DC-era diner chain offering 24-hour dining. There were once a dozen locations through the area, this location on the corner of Russell Road and Mount Vernon Ave is the last remaining one. Waffle Shop is like walking into a time machine. The decor still has the art Deco style featuring a lot of stainless steel. I was excited to have discovered a new/old restaurant. Once I arrived, I realized that I had been there before in my 20s. I ordered a combo with waffles, (BEEF) bacon, and eggs. If you read my post regarding Burger 7, you already know how I feel about beef bacon. Here at the Waffle Shop, they asked if I wanted it crispy. Absolutely was my response. I had my eggs scrambled hard with cheese, which was delicious, but the crowning jewel of this meal was my waffle. It was made with a great batter, served fresh, light, and crispy and I had it decorated with strawberries and chocolate. The service is amazing, friendly, fast, and smiling. A corner shop reminiscent of the Chrysler Building in shape, this cute little joint has a lot of mom-and-pop-60s-founded-trying-to-streamline charm and I'm loving it. I'm honestly waffling between a 4* or 5* review and I am torn. Rarely do I give what I'd classify as a "dive" or fast food joint 5* because they're usually a quick and dirty type establishment. You're in, you're out, you get food that hits the spot but doesn't blow you away and then you forget about it. But now I'm questioning my rating scales for these kinds of establishments. Do you rate a lower quality establishment on the same five-star scale as a higher quality establishment, or you immediately lower them on the rating basis purely because they aren't Michelin approved? What makes a 5* fast food joint? How can you compare a little dive of a place to an famous chef's establishment? Can they both have 5*s?? See the dilemma I'm in? Aside from the food (see that review below), what I liked about this place was they don't try to be something they're not and they embrace who they are full heartedly. They are not a fancy joint. They don't have the budget, most likely, for fresh flowers out front. So they use fake flowers and you know what? It's cute! Sure, to the observing eye it looks like a place that maybe you don't want to try out, some run down poor quality joint to grab a quick bite, but that's when you start missing out. When I first saw this joint over a year ago I wrote it off as not worth my time. And now I can't wait to go back and get myself some more waffles. The service was low key and friendly. Despite having the kitchen visible, much like Waffle House, the inside didn't feel loud or overpowering. It was rather calming to eat inside and easy to carry on a conversation with your party. And having that overall cute aesthetic of hodgepodge qualities it was easy to daydream about changing one little corner of the store to really elevate an adorable daydream I started to envision. Give Waffle Shop a try and make sure you compare it to other restaurants of its caliber, not that fancy breakfast nook you found in Italy that happened to personally cater to the Queen's private tea party with her grandchildren. (But please, if that place exists I want to know!) What we got: Waffle and fresh fruit - 5* guys, the fruit is loaded on. And it's all fresh! None of that frozen and thawed crap. The waffle was also delicious. Great taste and fantastic texture with just the right amount of crunch and fluffiness. The syrup is on the table and I'm sure it's just some generic brand, probably something I wouldn't usually buy myself, but it works great with the meal. French toast, choice of eggs (scrambled with cheddar cheese), choice of meat (turkey sausage) - 4* the French toast was delicious. Comes out lightly sugared with powdered sugar, and then you use the table syrup if you'd like. I stole some fruit from our waffle dish to eat with it and it was a fantastic. You can get French toast with fruit, I did not ask if that was an upgrade I could do as I got the meal with the eggs and meat. The turkey sausage came out as a patty, I was expecting links, but it was delicious. Slightly salty but I loved it. The eggs are all so well cooked and I loved the melted cheese mixed in. The only reason this is getting a 4 is because the waffles were definitely better. Comparing those two meals side by side there was a clear winner. read more

There was hesitation in sitting down to dine in. Against our judgement we stayed. Even with a injured ankle the chairs were not supportive- we played musical chairs before placing the order. There was no hot tea although on the menu and alternative was recommended which was mango juice (have no idea how that would have been a substitute anywhere else). Our order contained the waffle and two egg & meat meal. Fiancé had the bacon and I had scrapple. Both meats were sour and unpleasant. The waffle oozes with excessive amount of butter. The potatoes were made from the scalloped potatoes either frozen or they were old. Unseasoned and distasteful. We won't be servicing this establishment ever again. We both were extremely sick and drove to get an immediate ginger ale to calm the stomach. Be careful what you order. The items we had were not made to order - they were apart of someone else's meal as we both said eggs with no cheese yet they came scrambled with hints of American scattered through. I will not be recommending this and hope the health inspectors frequent more often. read more
