We went there during the Fringe Festival, right at dinner time, so it was understandably busy. The wait was about 20 minutes. The staff was very accommodating and attentive. The waiter was quick to greet us and explained the menu with great enthusiasm. I ordered the brisket sandwich with garlic fries, a pickle and a glass of their house bourbon. My niece ordered the fried chicken and garlic fries. The wait was relatively short and we spent the time sneaking peeks at everyone else's meals. One of the chefs even came out to say hello! When the food arrived the aroma was mouthwatering and I could barely take the time to snap a photo for Facebook. Everything was fantastic! The brisket had soaked right into the bun and every bite was better than the last. We both couldn't stop complimenting the garlic fries as the best fries either of us had ever tasted. And my niece is a self proclaimed expert. Her fried chicken was magnificent. Cooked to perfection, not dry or greasy, just perfect. Was looking for some really good BBQ and I heard that Meat had some tasty options. I decided to stop in and give it a shot. I am GLAD I did. The restaurant wasn't overly busy or crowded, but had just enough people in it to make you want to stop in and grab a bite because everyone looked like they were enjoying their food! Since I had already looked at the menu before stopping in, I already knew what I wanted. I ordered the smoked chicken, with a side of coleslaw and baked beans. The chicken was amazing, but what elevated it more was the selection of BBQ sauces. Bourbon, Cherry and Spicy. All were fantastic. The beans were spicy and meaty and full of flavor, glad I made that choice. The coleslaw was good. I liked it because it was a change of pace from coleslaw that you typically get in the States, but it didn't taste southern to me. To be honest, the restaurant has come at a good time. Our city (among others) has developed a passionate lust for meats of every kind. People suddenly want the best they can get. Meats are venerated. Cherished. Strongly desired by our Edmontonian tummies. And Meat, with their no-fuss name and come-hither scent, fills the need for this particular vittle. Their menu is crafted around sharing boards, although the enthusiastic can keep their meat to themselves, if they choose. The options include items such as beef brisket, pulled pork, BBQ ribs, and smoked chicken, available in a variety of portion sizes. Sides are separate (under the 'Not Meat' section of the menu); depending on your penchant for pasta or veggies, you can pair your meats with whatever you like. There are also a number of sandwiches (and dollar pickles!) for those who don't feel like tearing into a tender, smoky carcass. Your loss, sandwichers. While I was there, I tried the beef brisket and smoked chicken, paired with the brussel sprouts (cooked in butter and garlic) as a side. The brisket came up tops, as I'd suspected from my friends' many rave reviews. Tender, smoky, and delicious, the brisket was stunning when eaten with the bourbon BBQ sauce. The chicken was juicy and smoky, which I thought was pretty unique. Most whole chickens are roasted, but this one retained the smoky charcoal flavour that you smell when walking into the restaurant. The brussel sprouts weren't my favourite, but I'd wanted to give them a try. Never a fan of the brussel sprout, I'd been told that, recently, people had learned how to cook them. Unfortunately, I'm still not convinced, but they gave it a good effort. What impressed me most about Meat, though, was their cocktail list. This made the evening for me. Bourbon Caesars with fat sticks of bacon, Old Fashioneds, Boulevardiers, Derbys-we tried them all and they were perfect. Beware: Meat serves their cocktails with 2 oz of booze, so don't plan on driving if you want more than one. They also offer a 50 cent 'Pickleback'-a back of pickle juice, which is a perfect addition to that Bourbon Caesar. Go on, give it a try. Meat left a strong impression on my taste buds. If meat is your thing, I'd strongly recommend swinging by Whyte just to visit this bad boy. If you're not a fan of smoky things or bourbon, try it anyways-chances are you'll walk through that door and the potent smell will seduce your senses. I think that Meat is definitely best enjoyed with a few people! The dining is family style, where everything you order comes out on a platter, with additional dishes for sides. Also this is a great way to try a lot of items on the menu :) Since they don't take reservations, you may have to wait for a table (depending on the time of day) but it is well worth the wait! Luckily we were seated immediately and got a table outside. I absolutely loved the ribs and the chicken, I don't think I've ever had meat that was cooked to be so tender and full of flavour. We also had the brisket and pulled pork and it was just so delicious. Their house made BBQ sauces are also a must try! I can't remember their names, but there are 4-5 on each table and they are so delicious. The meat that you order doesn't need sauce, but you're missing out if you don't try these. Meat was good. Some friends and I wanted to have a pre-drinknight dinner and figured MEAT sounded like our kinda jam. We showed up to a PACKED house on a Saturday night. I'm not sure if they take reservations, but that probably would've been a good idea. The place was fully seated, the bar was full and there were even patrons, including my party, standing around waiting for seating. The server took our name and promised half an hour to 40 mins. Luckily, we grabbed some drinks at the bar and enjoyed each others' company until we were seated within about 15 mins. The interior of the place was nice and clean. Open - although sweltering hot. Like.. I was sweaty before I even had the chance to get meat sweats. It was remarkably loud. Even seated at our table, we had to lean in and shout at each other. The things they had on the menu comprises of brisket, pork ribs, sausage, fried chicken, and a rotisserie like chicken. They have various sides for you to choose from which can fit anyone's taste. The one Item I highly recommend is the garlic fries just because fries are always delicious. My personal favorite is the brisket. There are restaurants that can screw it up, but Meat does no such thing. I recommend going with friends or family of at least 4 and splitting the meat sampler they have to offer so you can try all the different meats in one sitting to see which you like best. Visited for the second time on a very cold winter night and it was a good break from the blizzard. The food was as good as we remembered. We picked a selection of meat: beef short ribs which were the meat of the day, pork ribs and beef brisket; and the mac and cheese, brown beans and the mashed potatoes and gravy. In general, the food was good. But over the course of the meal, the level of salt seemed got to be too much. The only other criticism is that when the room is even half full the noise level gets to be almost too much. We got pulled pork, beef brisket and the sausage as well as garlic fries (yes, they are as yum as everyone says they are!), some bread and a pickle to share! We recently went to MEAT on a double date. This was my second time there, the first time being when they opened and not much has changed. They do not take reservations, so go early or risk a long wait. There is an option to leave your phone number with the hostess and they will let you know when your table is close being ready, which gives you a chance to walk around Whyte Ave or do anything other than stand around their crowded waiting area. The restaurant is noisier than you would expect. We found it very difficult to hear our friends across the table, or each other. The food is great (I mean, who doesn't love barbecue?), it is a little on the pricier side. Our half of the bill was just under $100 - this included a bottle of wine and no dessert. I highly recommend the beef brisket, it will literally melt in your mouth. The ribs are also delicious. Sides are ordered separately, we got the fries and the brussel sprouts, both were tasty. The service, on the other hand, is not as desirable as the food. I love the name of this place - you know exactly what you are getting into. Meat was fun, and delicious. The restaurant is large and bright, with a wall of windows along one side. There are a number of two or four person tables around the sides of the restaurant, with the rest being bench style in the middle of the room. When we visited it was on a Monday night, so we didn't have to share our bench with anyone else. It is pretty loud though, so if you're looking for quiet conversation, this isn't the place for you. Dishes are served family style, and come out of the back very quickly, and we liked having the option of starting with a few dishes and then ordering more if we needed it. My group of four tried the beef brisket, cola ribs (the special that night), fried chicken, Shepherd's Pie, a side of coleslaw and a side of mac n' cheese. I really enjoyed everything we ate, with the head and shoulders standout being the fried chicken. It was so moist and tasty, without being greasy or too salty. We easily finished our food with room for dessert, and I thought that for the price the portions could have been a little bit bigger, but I was happy I wasn't over-stuffed. There's a good variety of beer and bourbon on the menu as well, with a few dessert items (try the pecan pie). So, finally, we waited 30 minutes to eat BBQ. I had the beef brisket, the ribs, and the sausage. But it was a strange dryness because the brisket was soaked in meat juice, but the actual taste in your mouth tasted like dry pastrami. The ribs were also dry. The sausage was good. For sides, we had the coleslaw and the mac and cheese. The coleslaw needed more seasoning, and the mac and cheese was overly salty. I really liked the bathroom interior. Mac and cheese was on point and don't forget to get garlic fries. It's a good portion of carbs for the price. They provide 4 sauces to accompany your meat coma, bourbon is OK but it's all about the mustard. Mustard on da meat. Atmosphere is pretty cool with a sit down bar and long table seating. As someone who lived in Kentucky for several years and has a love for the art of BBQ (and beer), I can say that this place is top notch. First off, I was extremely impressed when I saw they had one of my favorite bourbons of all time on the menu (Michters), a huge plus. Overall, they have a great bourbon selection (something that is pretty tough to find in Canada). And they have a great selection of mostly Canadian beers. Our server was fairly knowledgeable of their offerings and was able to answer my questions. The food is excellent. I'm very familiar with the Texas style BBQ they serve, and while it is not quite as bold and smokey as you would find in some places in the States, it is nonetheless well prepared. I had the ribs and brisket with sides of creamed corn, brussel sprouts and cole slaw (all shared with my wife) and we were amazed at how good everything was. The BBQ sauces were good, but I would've liked something a little bolder and spicier (perhaps a Caroline style vinegar sauce?). Overall our dining experience was superb. My friend and I came here on a Saturday right when they opened and I'm glad we did because it was packed around the time we left with people waiting in line for a spot. Aesthetically the place was VERY VERY nice and pleasing. I did feel like I was in a traditional Southern BBQ joint. The washroom also had a very unique design and the whole place was overall very modern and well decorated. The staff was professional and kind, our server answered all of our questions and explained to us about the sharing method of eating which I was familiar with because i am Asian. Between the two of us we ordered the half a order of brisket, full rack of ribs, coleslaw and garlic fries. The RIBS were very delicious and well seasoned. As for the brisket it was a very small potion for $14.00, but otherwise it was very good as well. The garlic fries on the other hand weren't our favourite. In my opinion there was too much seasoning and it was kind of cold when it was brought to us, I would recommend the regular fries or even the mashed potatoes instead. The coleslaw was very good though, a little bit bitter but it wasn't bothersome. For dessert we got the homemade apple crumble which surprisingly was delicious! There was evidence of fresh apples and it was not too sweet and it was warm when it was brought out. Overall I had a great experience at this restaurant and it definitely surpassed my expectations. I would love to go back and try more of the menu. The only thing is the do feel like i is a little overpriced. If they lowered the cost by a couple of bucks I would definitely be a regular customer! My 4 guests and I were seated right away on a busy Thursday evening shortly after 7 pm. The atmosphere is quite loud and a bit warm but I guess it comes with the territory of a busy restaurant on whyte ave. The server was friendly and patient when we were busy catching up and pondering over the selection of meat on the menu. We decided to share the meat sampler between the 5 of us with a large Mac n cheese, large coleslaw, garlic fries and small brussell sprouts as sides. The bourbon BBQ is a must try. I'm not huge on BBQ sauce but this one has a great smoky flavour and coincides well with any of the meat choices. The smoked chicken and ribs were my favourites. The fried chicken has a nice crunch and is very tasty. Wasn't overly fond of the pulled pork, I found it quite salty. The brisket seemed a bit dry. The sausage was good especially with the mustard. Definitely get the Mac n cheese. The brussell sprouts were overpowered with garlic. The sprout taste and crunch were lost and almost inedible which is rare for me because I will eat anything with garlic! Garlic fries were amazingly tasty as was the coleslaw. We wrapped dinner up with the chocolate bacon caramel sundae and a piece of pecan pie which came with ice cream. We had a great experience overall in a pleasant atmosphere. We came to the area to attend the Fringe Festival (Friday August 14th). We walked around for a bit and read a few menus before we decided to ask for a table. This was at least the 5th place we read a menu at before I decided its somewhere I wanted to eat. There was a line up, but we got seated immediately - lucky we were just a table for 2 (the guests waiting must have been larger parties). We were greeted immediately, and the waiter explained the procedure. We ordered the ribs (meat of the day) and the brisket. For sides we ordered the mac and cheese, coleslaw and the beans. This was more than enough food for 2 adults. I personally liked everything except the beans - there was andouille sausage in there, and possibly tobasco - it was simply too "hot/spicy" for my taste, but I don't like spicy food. My guest loved the beans - so, take his word for it (not mine). Definitely though - the meat was perfectly cooked and delicious. The mac & Cheese is amazing. There were 4 bottles of different BBQ sauces on the table, and the 2 that I tried were great (I didn't try the spicy one, or the jalapeno mustard). Since the food is already pre-cooked, I don't think we waited more than 6 minutes for our food to get delivered. And - this is on a Friday night at 6:30pm ... peak time! Delicious food. What an amazing meal!! Had dinner at Meat while passing through Edmonton, because I had seen this restaurant on "You Gotta Eat Here" ... And you really do!! My son and I shared the brisket and the ribs, with sides of Brussels sprouts, Mac and cheese, and garlic fries. It was ALL fabulous!! The two of us couldn't finish it all, so went home with leftovers that we will be fighting over later ... The atmosphere is modern but friendly, with communal tables and stellar staff ... Our server Tate was really great, she made sure we thoroughly enjoyed our meal, gave some perfect recommendations, and was attentive without being intrusive. My wife and I came for a late lunch after the farmers market in mid October. We heard many good things about this restaurant and eagerly were anticipating. It's a hipster place with a cool vibe and lots of wood tables with uncomfortable chairs. No decor. My wife had eggs Benedict, traditional version. I had a pulled meat sandwich with fries. My friend had a layover from Vancouver to London in Edmonton...Picked him up and it was 12 noon. Called my sister up and she wanted to meet up as well bringing my 2 nephews with her. I say let's try Meat, I've always wanted to go and have my buddy eat some Alberta Beef. We parked and we get in. The hostess brought us to our table and my sister was delayed 20 minutes. Em was our waitress and she was really nice. She got our drinks, didn't judge that it was too early for a beer. Jonny got something on tap and I had white citrus beer. It was brunch time and we asked Em what she recommended. She advised the Beef Brisket Benedict or the Beef Brisket sandwich...SOLD!!! Drink and Beer comes out and my sister and nephews arrived. My Benedict was nicely done, the hollandaise sauce wasn't heavy, the shaved beef brisket topped with the nice soft egg and sided with golden brown potatoes. Delish! I have been to a few smokehouses in Edmonton, and I definitely think this one is better than the few others I've been to. So I'm giving it a 4 based on what else is in Edmonton. If I was comparing this to smokehouses I've been to in the states, my review would be different. But given our options in Edmonton, I would go back to this place. The pulled pork and smoked pork chop were truly really great, 5 stars. The brisket I thought could've been better (in fact I think I've it made it better myself). The chicken was decent. I really loved the mac'n'cheese. I've never been impressed with the mac'n'cheese at other smokehouses in Edmonton, but they do a great job here. The chopped up brussel sprouts were really good too. And of course, the barbecue sauces with 4 diferent flavours are great too. So if you want to go to a smokehouse in Edmonton, I'd say go to this place. The server we had was also super helpful. One thing I should add... you get an insane amount of food. There were 4 of us and we ordered the amounts recommended to us by the waitress, but it was too much! If you are having a craving for meat then this is the place to be! We came here around 8pm on Saturday and it was busy buzzing with conversation and laughter. They don't take reservations so you may have to wait a bit for a table. Our server's name was Jan and she was excellent. Since we both had never been to Meat, she explained to us what they are about and gave us some wonderful recommendations for both food and drink. She explained to us that Meat is a BBQ smokehouse with homemade sauces, yummy sides, wine, beer,and bourbon. They smoke and prepare over 700 lbs of meat in a day and they still manage to run out! Jan recommended that we share a few half orders of the meat and have a few small sides to go with it. We decided on the the brisket, chicken and sausage link. For sides we ordered the coleslaw and the garlic fries. Even though the meat is smoked, it doesn't overtake all of the other delicious flavours in the meat. All of the meat was tasty, tender and moist. The coleslaw is probably the best I have had in a while. It wasn't over saturated with dressing, had perfect crunch and was finished with a bit of onion that pulled in the sweet and savory flavours together. It went very nicely with the meat. The garlic fries were delicious! So delicious that you do not need any ketchup or sauces to go with them. Sauces are available to you to choose from at your table. There was mustard, cherry, spicy or bourbon sauce. We tried them all and enjoyed the mustard and bourbon sauce the most. To drink we each wanted bourbon so we had an Old Fashioned. Came here for brunch a few weekends back. First time here for my boyfriend and I. The place was packed when we arrived, but we were still able to get a high top by the bar right away. The restaurant has a cool low-key retro vibe with majority of tables being communal. Lots of windows = natural bright light. Our service was great, the food - hit & miss. My boyfriend ordered the hash with house-made andouille sausage. The sausage was delicious and packed with flavour. I, on the other hand, opted to try the classic combo of chicken & waffles. The chicken, although executed well with crispy skin, lacked flavor and the waffles were just terrible - dry and cardboard-like - I didn't even finish eating the waffles. I stuck with water while my boyfriend tried one of the beers of tap - he enjoyed his selection as recommended by our server. Overall, an interesting place to check out. The name of this establishment says it all. If your a carnivore like me, well then you'll be right at home. Its alternative style for eating out. The 'meat' is served on platters. The bar is very cozy and hip. I had the Grape Fruit Alley Cat. Absolutely delicious!! I believe we had pulled pork, sausage and fries. I was ravenous. Only down side is its a bit pricey.
