My boyfriend and I have been fairly loyal customers to a different BBQ joint in the city but because MEAT's name stands out and we were on the south side anyway, we decided to give it a whirl. Immediately I noticed how many of the waitresses looked identical. That doesn't affect the review, but it was funny and indicative of the trendy Whyte Ave vibe that MEAT is nailing down. (To be clear, everyone was incredibly friendly and informative - even checking to ask if it was our first time and explaining the menu.) The other thing I noticed quickly was how close together everyone was sitting inside. It was packed, so we chose to sit outside. I appreciate that MEAT writes on the menu that they're going for a family- table-share-feeling, but it made me wonder if a person would have the option to put more space between themselves and the other diners. As per Yelp's suggestion, we ordered the "secret" sharing platter. Wow!! Pulled pork, roasted chicken, ribs, brisket, and fried chicken. With a heap of garlic fries ordered extra. As much as we were amazed, we still felt like perhaps the $60 price point was a little too high. All of the meat was delicious but after a point I became a bit overwhelmed by their seasoning. The meat, with out you adding a BBQ sauce, had a distinct smell and flavor. I had to switch to the salad we had ordered. A day later my boyfriend was eating left overs and I still felt repulsed by the smell. Not sure what it is, but unfortunately it might prevent me from returning. Or if I do, it will be to try a sandwich on the menu. I also struggled with the garlic fries after a bit. Everything was amazing initially and then it became too much flavor, and I was also tasting quite a bit of salt. (I'm sensitive to salt, so other patrons may feel differently.) I remember seeing it on "You gotta eat here", so when I travelled all the way from Ontario, this was definitely on my list of joints to visit. brisket was done well but lacked flavour and seasoning. Over salted and overpriced food with mediocre service. This is the second time I've eaten here. The first time was nothing spectacular, this time was altogether disappointing. Everyone at the table agreed this place was not worth another try. See the rest of the review for details. The table ordered a platter to share. Brisket, fried chicken and garlic fries. The brisket was okay, and the BBQ sauce options were mostly tasty. The fried chicken was moist, but didn't have any spices to make it interesting. Additionally, both the chicken and the fries were so salty, that they were almost inedible. Sometimes we'd try to take a bite and have to spit it out, because there was literally a pocket of salt stuck to the bottom. They must have dropped the salt shaker over our food or something. It was more 2x more salt than cheap fast food places. When the server asked how our meal was, I looked up blankly thinking of something nice to say. One of the other people let her know the brisket was okay. But we thought they accidentally over salted our fries and chicken. No apologies or response from the server to improve our experience. We didn't see her again until it was time to pay the bill. At the end of the meal we had over 2/3 of the fries left over and a pieces of meat we couldn't stomach trying. When the waitress came to get us to pay the bill we mentioned again that we had trouble eating the food because it was not seasoned to our liking. The waitress only responded that most people liked the food that salty and next we needed to ask the kitchen ahead of time to use less salt on our food. Considering she knew we were struggling to enjoy our meal, and she did nothing to improve the dining experience, I'm not sure why she thought we would ever come back. If this meal was at a fast food joint, I might be okay with a mediocre experience. But when you pay for a nice meal you expect quality food and service. Maybe Edmonton has low enough expectations for BBQ that his place is passable. But you can get better bbq at any American BBQ chain for half the price. read more

I have been here several times for brunch and once for dinner. I must say that I am a really big fan. I've never had a problem with wait times for seating or food. Everything comes in hot and ready and the service is always a pleasurable experience. If you're looking for a fine drink, have a ceasar. Otherwise, prepare your body for the meat. There was only one time I was disappointed with the ribs - unfortunately they were dry and overcooked - but other than that, the meat has always been prepared well. Delicious, quality cuts, and a much lower-budget alternative vs going somewhere for unlimited meat. The meat platter is also more than plenty to share with at least 2 or 3 others... and that's on an empty stomach. The pickle is also always necessary. Don't be fooled, it's a big pickle, although it's just one. Have a bite between meat pieces. It's a good way to clean your palette and re-discover the meat juices. Lastly, come with good company and be prepared to potentially share a table with some strangers. That's just the kind of atmosphere they've built, and it's very cool. read more

Came here with a group of co-workers one night and wow!! I spent a week in Canada, and this place on the list of placese to hit up. There was a wait when we got there, however we toughed it out and it was completely worth it. Coming from Texas, we have our own style of BBQ and when we ordered that smorgasbord of meat, the taste was strangely familiar. It was a good smokey bbq and after talking to the staff, they said the owners travelled down to Texas, learned how to make good cue and brought it back to Edmonton. Having been here a few times over a number of years, I must say MEAT has made consistently good quality smoked meat for Edmontonians to enjoy. The smokiest of the meats is the brisket, the fried chicken is excellent and the garlic fries are a must. Comparing southern food to MEAT, I would like to add sweet tea to the menu. I think collard greens has been replaced with coleslaw. Either way, their menu is packed with flavor and I would say order less of each meat so you can be satisfied with variety. Great atmosphere! The colour scheme of navy blue and white, paired with the butcher's paper is wildly easy on the eyes. I have a love-hate with the family style tables. On one hand, it's a very cool concept and I can imagine outgoing folk really are into sharing the space with strangers. As an introvert though, I would prefer to just be at a table with my choice of dining folk. I am wholly behind the family style platter they serve everything on though! Sharing is caring, right? The food here is super yummy! I'll second (or fiftieth?) everyone who said that the brisket is the best. It is so good, with its lovely smokey flavour and tenderness. I could eat a pound of this to myself... I also highly recommend the mac and cheese. It's cheesy perfect and pairs PERFECTLY with the cherry bbq sauce (it sounds weird, but trust me). There's usually a long wait if you come in a group but when I went last time and needed a table for two, we were seated right away. Meat is a nice place to go with a group of friends because with more people, you would be able to order more meats to try. The brisket is usually one that I always order and the fatty pieces are the best. The roasted chicken and pulled pork are ok but I usually skip those because they tend to be ok the drier side. It's nice that they have the 4 different sauces to eat with their meat. My favourite item by far at Meat is their cornbread. It has a nice sweetness to it and it's not dry at all. It comes in a nice skillet and can easily be shared between 4 people (I felt like it would be too much corn bread to eat by myself). Mmmm... You had me at MEAT. Then came the bourbon list. The sinfully good sides. All in a bright white and bold blue, chill atmosphere, well, what more could you want?! Literally everything on the menu that I tried, I would order again. The beef brisket is delicious (as many of the reviews state) but the star of the MEAT show, for me was the andouille sausage links; they were the most moist, flavourful, melt in your mouth andouille I have ever had (and yes, I've eaten my way through New Orleans!) I was simply blown away. What ever you get, add a link on. At $6, it's totally worth it. For sides I had the garlic fries and mac & cheese - heaven help me, the mac n cheese is insanely decadent. I shutter at the caloric intake (but don't really care, hee hee). My dining partner quite liked the garlic fries; I was mixed. The flavour was excellent, but I am used to Hawaiian style garlic fries that are super crispy, these were soft - but I still would get them again. And lastly, the pickle - oh the perfection of the pickle. Does it sound insane that I am so obsessed with pickles? Well I am, and my friends, this place knows how to make a pickle. The following is a meat-less review for MEAT. As a vegetarian, I think it's hilarious that I even had dinner here, but it was deeeeeelish. MEAT helpfully divides its menu into Meat and Non-Meat sections. I really dove into the Non-Meat section, ordering the garlic fries, brussel sprouts, coleslaw, and mac & cheese. Best: Mac & cheese. *heavy breathing* Mac & cheese is baaaasically my #1 favourite food in the whole world, so to discover that I maybe have a new favourite was earth shattering. My boyfriend didn't think I could finish the entire bowl, LOL. Proved him wrong. 2nd Best: Brussel sprouts. Even if you think you don't like brussel sprouts, these are worth trying. Shredded and juicy and flavourful. 3rd Best: Garlic fries. Don't get me wrong. These are yummy. I know everybody raves about them. The flavour is there, I just found them to be a bit...soggy. Not all of the fries, but some of them. 4th Best: Coleslaw. It's not bad, it's just nothing special. So much meat! Seriously though. I don't think I've seen so much meat I one place. They have more meat than the local butcher. More meat than a slaughterhouse. If meat were a crime, this place would be tried for life without parole. We got the sharing platter for 4 and thought we were going to crush it... how wrong we were. "What do you want to order more of?" "...MEAT" That pretty much sums up how a dinner of four went. Unlike its sister/brother right next door (Next Act Pub), the walls are quite stark white with deep blue tiles and polished cement floors. Kinda makes you feel like you're in a kitchen/mess hall. I would best describe it as less character compared to Pub but that's not necessarily a detracting thing. There's just no abundance of art or retro movies for you to stare at. Everything is wide open. The tables have no physical partitions unless you count the row of sauce on the table differentiating you from the next group of four beside you. I think this is what made me think of a military type mess hall! Fresh off the heels of ribfest at Kdays (Boss's Hog ribs were simply amazing) the first thing I wanted to sink my teeth into were ribs. Outcries of vegetarian discrimination were made vocal by our friends and her protests were quickly appeased by the delectable vegetarian sides offered. We decided to go with a full rack of ribs, half order of brisket, half order of pulled pork, full side of filler sustenance - er - i mean brussel sprouts, half order of coleslaw and a half order of beans. In all seriousness though, the brussel sprouts were actually very good. They were shredded and fried thoroughly ensuring it wasn't too dried out or oily. Piping hot and flavors that you don't expect, I thought the sprouts held their own quite well against the meat. The portions for the large was actually quite big. It was very assuring to see thought and earnest put into the other non-meat dishes. The 'slaw was fresh and didn't feel creamy at all. And the beans! Oink my gosh, it was like eating chilli, it was that flavorful. In regards to the meat, the ribs were very good. I like mine a little more sauced out and juicier but since they were going for a dry rib approach you can't simply compare. A full rack would not feed four but luckily enough we had the brisket and pulled pork. Although the pulled pork didn't quite stand out, it had enough tenderness and taste of a Ryan Gosling romantic drama. You will always love Ryan Gosling but the movie wasn't a stand out tell your friends about. The brisket on the other hand was very moist and soft. It had a nice savory kick on the charred outside that went deliciously well with the sauces at your disposal. The sauces were bourbon, cherry, spicy, and mustard. You can't get intoxicated off the bourbon, but you can make no mistake it has that sweet sweet taste of bourbon gold when it tangoes with your brisket. Prices weren't too bad and I would definitely recommend eating here than say Pampas. You'll be overdosing on protein at both joints and at least you'll save some money eating here if you want to lose the fine white table cloth dining with servers calling you sir. Come to MEAT if you just like your meat on a tray and don't mind digging in with your hands. At the end of that, we wanted more meat and ordered an apple glazed half chicken. Also good. Is it ironic my vegetarian sister suggests we go eat at a place called "Meat"? We came in on a Thursday night around 6pm and the place was somewhat busy but I was just happy to have a table because I was starving. We got settled in at a table closer to the bar and by the window, our server was a nice young lady who was very attentive and helpful especially with the menu. We started off with drinks, I had the beer on tap special which I can't really remember what it was except that it was called Rogue and it had a hint of nut but not sweet or bitter strong (I'm not really good at describing beer). My sister had a glass of red wine of course, she never really trys new drinks she always plays it safe. Looking at the menu I was happy and surprised that they had a veggie sandwich! That's too awesome really (I have a feeling my sister went online to read the menu before hand lol). I was wavering between the brisket or pulled pork sandwich, I asked our server what she would recommend and I finally decided on the brisket. We also ordered a couple of sides to share, coleslaw and mac n cheese. Looking around the restaurant it had a cool atmosphere. The staff was pretty stylish and good looking, the patrons were pretty similar also. There was a mix of young and old but all were dressed unique to classy, this is why I adore Whyte ave there are just an array of people. Our food came and it looked really good. I started off with the sides, mine came with mashed yams and my sister had garlic fries with hers. Omg it was so yummy! I haven't even tried my brisket yet and I loved the sides plus the side dishes were only $5 for the small and it was enough for both of us to share. The brisket was not bad it was very soft and moist but I'm not a huge meat Eater to honest. My sister really liked her veggie sandwich she ate the whole thing fast. I was seriously full but we always have to try the dessert at any new place we go to so we ordered their peach cobbler. When it came out it looked pretty normal but when we dug in omg... That is the best cobbler I had ever had (no joke)! The crust had a distinct nutty Cinnamon kinda taste and combine with the peach filling holy moly! Wowza, the BEST mac and cheese I've had in my LIFE. I had a great lady date at MEAT. It was a Thursday night, it was packed and it was fantastic. Even though there was a line, it went fast and we were seated within the time they promised. I haven`t previously eaten at the community style dining where there are long tables. I can see if you`re on a first date (or beside someone on a first date) where it could be a little awkward, but it was just fine. We opted to split some options and it came out very fast. Seriously, I could rave about that mac and cheese all day. Trust me, order the large - it`s not a lot of extra money and it is a lot of extra mac and cheese. And the brussel sprouts are shredded, yummy goodness. Oh and the meat - try it all! And don`t forget about all the sauces that are on the table (we forgot until we were 3/4 finished). I was going nearby to another restaurant that turned out to be closed and I just had to divert to Meat. I'd heard so many good things yet, I hadn't made it over here to visit. I was prepared to leave stuffed as I had also heard that portions were big. Everything I had heard was spot on. The ambiance is pretty good. It's a fun modern mess hall. The big tables are meant for large groups and for sharing. Because of that though, if you're not lucky enough to get one of the two person tables, you'll be squeezed into one of the larger tables. So don't look to coming to meat for an intimate meal. It's loud and boisterous. The daily special menu is written on a big spool of meat packing paper...a nice touch. My companion wanted his own meal, so I had no opportunity to share, so I found myself drawn to the beef brisket sandwich and I also ordered the soup special, surprisingly, vegetarian. The sandwich came with garlic fries. All three things were awesome and I tried out both the cherry and the bourbon sauces, also really good. There was a lot of food, but I didn't let that stop me. I stuffed every bit of it down my throat. The waitress came back and scoffingly asked if we saved room for desert. I would have loved to try the peach cobbler or the pecan pie, but I couldn't eat any more. My only gripe is about the drink menu. I would have loved a beer with my meal, and I really do like that they are promoting Alberta beer on tap, but there are no world class beers in Alberta yet and I don't drink beer just for the sake of having one. Decided to check MEAT out due to all the positive reviews on Yelp.... Honestly, in terms of BBQ, my husband and I agree - - this is the worst in the city! First off, if the restaurant is called "Meat", one would think you would actually get some with your order! A full rack of ribs for $25, and each "1/2" was literally the size of my cell phone! We thought that they had screwed up and given us a half order - but that was not to be! And the fried chicken tasted like it had been sitting in a proofer for a couple hours.... All in our bill was $65 before tip ... and my husband was still hungry when we left.... We'll not be back, and have told others our experience as well....there are now many other BBQ options in the city that are worth the cost! Basically, just because a place is "near Whyte Ave" and "is trendy" doesn't mean it's good - - we wish people would realize that! read more

As a carnivore, I was super excited to check out a BBQ place called MEAT. The fact that it's owned by the same folks that run The Next Act made me hopeful that thing were going to go well. We were no disappointed. We stopped by last night for our first anniversary, and it was packed. Good sign. There was a wait, but we were expecting that. I mean, it was dinner hour on a Saturday night. They are great at turning over tables and getting people seated quickly, though, and the wait wasn't overly painful. Being the disgusting human beings that we are, we ordered the enormous sample platter with two sides (the bakes beans and the mac and cheese). The platter is a great way to sample things. It includes pulled pork, brisket, fried chicken, smoked chicken, andouille sausage and ribs. The standouts for me were the pulled pork, brisket and usage, but there was nothing I was sorry I had put in my mouth. For the sides, the beans would have been better with a sandwich. At first, I thought the Mac and cheese was a little on the bland side, although creamy and well cooked, but it actually was a great accompaniment to, and palate cleanser for, the rest of the meal, and we really enjoyed it. The sauces are regret at, with the winners for me being the cherry and bourbon. I would love to go back and get a pound of brisket to bathe in sauce and shove in my face. Oh, and they have chocolate covered bacon, either on it's own or in sundae form. It's freaking delicious. Not only to I love both chocolate and bacon, together they are just spectacular. If it sounds odd to you, just think of salty and sweet. It's the same thing. My husband had the ocean pie, and he said it was great, and not too sweet like some pecan pies tend to be. If I could give half stars, it would be a 4.5. I took a bit off because it's insanely loud in there. The room is gorgeous, but it's very open and there are no sound breaks, so the noise just tends to bounce around add music to the mix, and very hard to hear. I have a tiny voice, so it felt like I was having to shout. Some people might be turned off by the communal tables, but that's something that has never bothered us. (They also need to get the creamy red birth beer from Boylan's. It's great.) We will be back. We are carnivores, and this place ticks all the boxes. Great food and yummy desserts. As my second time coming....I was craving smoked meat! Perfect spot! Although it was quite loud inside vs the patio part. Hinted to the hostess that I would rather be seated in the patio part with my two children and brother. Ends up we get seated in the LOUD side...whatever we are famished my little guy is passed out hard in his baby seat and my girl in a good mood in the stoller. They did not have high chairs but are considered child friendly. There was a hand full of children including mine. The food and drink my brother and I ordered was perfect! The perfect balance of smoke and spice. Brisket pieces made the beans a hot commodity at the table. MACARONI AND CHEESE - a hearty helping of spiral pasta full of flavor without being runny or too dry. Pasta tasted like it was made in house, very fresh. Not overcooked, but softer than typical al dente. I could have eaten this as a main course. BREAD - at "a buck a slice" I was hoping for bread made by Jesus himself. And I think it was. Hard to believe, but it was the best white bread I've ever had. Hearty, fresh and super thick! Meat: FRIED CHICKEN - this felt like a very authentic fried chicken. The breading was crispy and full of flavor the chicken itself was tender and delicious PULLED PORK - when the meat came out, the pulled pork appeared dry. It's not bathed in any sauce, as it should be. The pork was perfectly cooked. Juicy and tons of flavor. The dry appearance was misleading, this is some of the best pulled pork I've had. RIBS - I was conflicted on the ribs. The dry rub was amazing. The sugar gave a nice crust, and the smoky flavor was outstanding. However, the ribs were overcooked. I appreciate ribs that don't fall off the bone, but these were tough and quite dry. BRISKET - tender, but not falling apart. Juicy and great flavor. This was excellent brisket, but it was very lean. Too lean, in my opinion. I eat brisket FOR the fat. I was disappointed that I couldn't find any fat on the plate. Sauces: SPICY - this was decent BBQ sauce, but I felt like it was simply house sauce with chili flakes added BOURBON - my favorite of the sauces. Smoky and sweet with just the right hint of whiskey. CHERRY - this was my second favorite. I was apprehensive, I find cherry too sweet most times. This was very well balanced. Just enough cherry to give sweetness without feeling like I was putting syrup on my beef. MUSTARD - prepared yellow mustard had good flavor, but blended particularly well with the bourbon sauce to create amazing flavor for pulled pork. BOURBON - unfortunately, I was disappointed with a couple aspects of the drinks. The selection was good, and the prices were very reasonable. I ordered an oz of Maker's 46. The server explained that they serve their bourbon on 1 rock. I typically drink whiskey neat, or with a touch of water to open it up, but I decided to take her suggestion. When the drink came out, there was a fairly large ice cube in the drink, and I found it watered down the bourbon much more than I would have liked. Perhaps smaller cubes would be a feasible adjustment? Service: We had a large group, 13, but I felt we didn't get to see our server much at all once the food showed up. I would have loved to have more drinks, and try more bourbon. It was quite busy, but I wanted to have more than 1 drink and 1 water in 2 hours! All in all, a very pleasant food experience. Finally got to try MEAT last night (a Friday) and were super impressed! We got there at 6:15 and got the last table for 4 ppl available. Right away, I was super impressed with the atmosphere: Decor is awesome, everybody seemed like they were having a good time. There was a wait the entire time we were sitting so it seems they are doing well. First up we ordered a round: meat ceasar, old fashioned, mint Julip and a microbrew. The one area that they could use some work on is serving times for initial greeting and drinks. We waited 5-10ish to make a drink order and then 15-20ish to get our drinks after that. But, they were tasty when we got them so life goes on. I got my ceasar w bourbon like they suggest. I gotta say, just didn't seem right. Maybe I'm a ceasar purist. Next time I'll sub it for gin. But, the garnish and seasoning were on target. The old fashioned was seriously good. Not quite Tavern 1903 level but Tavern's closed now so we'll take what we can get. They use buffalo trace in all their cocktails so dudes know what they're doing! Next, the food: we got the sharing platter plus large Mac 'n Cheese, large brussel sprouts, large beans, small creamed corn, and pickles. I have got to say, the best meal I've had in #yeg in a long long time! All around, wicked awesome. Best meat dish: I liked the ribs, my husband liked the brisket. We both agreed that the chicken dishes were just eh, alright. Pulled pork was also seriously good. Best sides: brussel sprouts = stupid good and guilt free (maybe?) Creamed corn = maybe the best I've ever had my entire life. Baked beans = super solid. Pickles = SHUTTHEFRONTDOOR good. I'm a huge pickle addict and these bad boys were amazing. The only I've ever had that hold a candle to my dad's homemade ones. Value: our bill was something close to $147 pre-tip. Not the cheapest meal we've had out but pretty darn reasonable for 4 ppl. Plus, I'll pay a bit extra for an exceptional dining experience over the usual moxies/BPs/whatever restaurant any day. Our cocktails were pretty steep so you could cut your cost by going beer instead. Also, we had leftovers so I had the pleasure of having MEAT for breakkie. :) read more

First of all, what a fun place! I came here with a group of friends and it was great! This place is great for nights like this, to order multiple dishes and share. The pulled Pork was one of my favourite, however all food is delicious! My only complaint is; our service was perhaps a bit too much. The waitress was a tad overboard with helping us, it was good at the start. However it became hard to enjoy our meal because she was there what seemed like every minute to check on us. read more

Meat, Meat, I love Meat. Did I mention that I love meat? For me, Meat by far is the best BBQ place in town. Granted, I'm not a BBQ expert per se, but I know what I like. Their chicken and pork ribs were absolutely fantastic. If you go here, you also must try the garlic fries and an honourable mention goes to the mac 'n cheese. Don't get me wrong, everything that we tried was very good. I also really like the fact that they served our local Alley Kat Main Squeeze beer in bottles. While the prices are a little high for my liking, the flavour is there. If I am down on Whyte Avenue in the near future for supper time, MEAT is definitely a place where I would go to again. F*cking awesome. The ribs were ok. The pulled pork, holy crap - I would eat that shit off a toilet at 7-seven (too far?). Even the sides are great - garlic French fries are very nice and the Brussels sprouts kicked butt. Anyway, great minimalist atmosphere. Pleasant staff with just the right amount of energy. Decent beer selection for the beer snobs. Very affordable. They've only been here 4 months, so come support these guys/gals. Also the menu is small and simplified. The brisket was fantastic, moist, tender and great flavours. When I visited the sausage was an added feature to their evenings menu and I've learned it has been made a permanent resident; very understandable as the MEUWLY'S ANDOUILLE was phenomenal! Also, if you enjoy a nice crunchy pickle, your money isn't wasted paying for one here. I'd highly recommend trying this place out and if you show up and there's a lineup for tables, just wait, it moves quickly as their staff is fantastic and the kitchen is super quick. read more

The food was great, but I guess you have to expect that when you only have 5 things on the menu. lol They do technically have more, but who's counting sides or veggie options. PS, if this doesn't go without saying, don't go to a restaurant called MEAT if you don't plan on ordering any meat. I got the platter, which I'd recommend for your first time.
