Jumbo smoked meat sandwich and fries.
    Paula K.

After hearing so much about Refinery Grill's sandwiches, I had to order one via a delivery service for lunch. I had a large smoked meat sandwich. It was literally a mountain of meat on fresh rye bread with yellow mustard and a side of fries. The bread and fries were reminiscent of another west end restaurant that served deli sandwiches, but is now defunct. The meat was warm and lean, and a little on the chewy side. I'm impressed with the variety of food offered in the menu. Prices are reasonable and I am hoping to do an in-person visit in the near future.

This is an update to my first review of The Refinery Grill on Mayfield Rd in the west end of Edmonton. My rating increases to 4 stars. I've been here for two breakfasts and one lunch. Today we both had the basic breakfast which is two eggs , your choice of bacon or sausages, potatoes, and toast. The Pros: 1) This is a high value breakfast at $9.95. There were many other choices, including breakfast sandwiches at $6 to $8 but this is the best value. 2)The potatoes are real potatoes and not that deep fried potato product you get from the multi-national restaurants. They also didn't over do the quantity of potatoes to make you over eat or feel guilty for leaving half behind. It's a nice balance. 3) If you worked hard and really want 3 eggs , they offer that too. 4) Everything was cooked just right from the over-easy eggs to the crispy bacon. 5) The bread used for toast was the kind of bread that you might have at home. 6) There are endless refills of coffee and it's a reasonable tasting brew. 7) The café is quiet enough to talk to your breakfast partner without yelling. 8) There's lots of parking. Cons: 1) Service was nice and polite but coffee refills came slowly. 2) They didn't offer multigrain bread for toast. 3) Although there were other breakfast options, I didn't notice any that appeared original or trendy. As you can see the pros were numerous and the cons were not serious. This isn't a destination café but if you are in the west end I can certainly recommend The Refinery Grill, at least for breakfast.

    French toast grill

This review is a bit overdue and not just based on one visit. I've been 3 times now with a friend, and it's become our breakfast place to go to when we want to have a nice visit and a decent breakfast. From the outside and the name, the Refinery Grill looks like it would be a more upscale steakhouse type of restaurant. But looks can be deceiving! It's more of a casual family diner type. The first time I I was there, I had the french toast grill which comes with 2 big pieces of french toast, eggs, hashbrowns and sausage for $14.95. Everything on the plate was delicious! The hashbrowns are real potatoes topped with dill. I do wish they were a bit crispier, but I'm sure I could ask for that the next time I go. My 2nd visit, I tried the blueberry pancakes and sausage for $16.25. First off, the pancakes were HUGE! The biggest pancakes I've had in the city so far. When they first brought out the pancakes, they looked great, but they hadn't been cooked through properly. The server took them back and brought out fresh ones cooked perfectly! They had fresh blueberries in them, and not just a few, they were loaded with blueberries! Would definitely have them again! On my last visit there, I tried the Traditional Benny, but switched out the ham for crispy bacon. Again, it was a huge portion and didn't disappoint! The hollandaise sauce wasn't the best I've had, but it was still tasty. The service is always amazing! Super friendly staff, clean restaurant and it's nice to be at a place where they don't rush you out. We'll definitely be back!

When walking in, the layout is nice. Lounge is to the right with TV's and to the left is the dining area. Love the colours they use & how spacious it is. I ordered the smoke meat Benny; eggs poached hard which came with hashbrowns. The hollandaise sauce had more of a sour taste due to the lemon juice, which was different compared to other places I've had. The potatoes looked much better than they tasted. The crispness was perfect, however they were way to salty & I did not add any salt to it. Did not finish my meal due to how salty the potatoes were, and the eggs Benny was okay. My partner had the Steak Benny, his steak was very chewy & he also did not finish his either. Service was good, it wasn't busy when we went, as it was a weekday around 9am. Would not order this again.

We decided to come have breakfast here after reading the positive reviews. Had the Eggs Benedict with smoked meat. Huge portion and delicious! I took half home. Although, the potato has browns were still a bit hard and not quite cooked through we really enjoyed our meal. The server was attentive and the restaurant was clean/inviting. Look forward to trying their lunch menu.

    Rueben sandwich.

Come hungry if you get a sandwich!! Went here for lunch. I had the rueben and my hubby had the beef dip. The beef dip was good an I recommend. The rueben was ok. The meat was pretty tender which is awesome but to be honest it lacked in flavour. Also the sauerkraut was not very sour tasting. You get a LOT of smoked meat though and the fries seem to be hand cut. They were good. I have the tomato soup and it was not very good. It had a particular spice (maybe thyme) that didn't pair well. If had to rate this based only on the beef dip, I would have given 4 stars! Also the service was great!

We popped in for lunch on a Saturday. The crumbling brick on the pillars outside should have been an indication of what to expect. The lobby/entrance and bathroom was probably the nicest part of the restaurant. The decor is pretty dated, with very few booths and lots of tables in a big open room. It was pretty loud in here and didn't have much in the way of ambiance. The waitress was awesome. No complaints. Full coffee always, chatty, nice. Zero complaints. The food was meh. My wings were chewy and dry. Obviously pre-cooked, dropped in the fryer to warm them up, then sauced. Hubby's smoked meat omelette was dry as well. The smoked meat is a type of processed lunch meat that's been diced up. Very bland. Although his hash browns were very tasty, they were also dry as a popcorn fart. It seemed like this place attracted an older crowd and was pretty busy. The food coming out of the kitchen looked good and portions seemed big, so maybe that's the attraction. I feel like with a little work on the decor and menu this could be a cool, trendy little eatery. We came, we tried, we'll pass.

    Calamari

I was having a dinner with friends and based on the Yelp reviews, I decided to check this place out. We arrived at 5:30 on a Friday to find a few tables occupied but it started to fill up on the restaurant side during our visit. We were seated in a half booth, half chairs area next the front area. The layout is quite spacious and I even though there was a large group, I didn't find it was too noisy and we could have our own conversations without overhearing others. The walls are decorated with a few photos of refineries. We asked our server if they had a drink menu as we didn't see one and inquired if they have margaritas and daiquiris but unfortunately they don't have any slushy drinks. She said maybe in the future they would so fingers crossed for my girlfriends. The menu was double sided and lots of good variety with pastas, sandwiches, steaks, and more. A few of us ordered appetizers; calamari and escargot. The calamari was nice and crispy and I enjoyed it with drizzled with lemon juice and tzatzki sauce. My friend liked her escargot. I didn't think the wait for our food was that long but it was difficult to track as we were chatting. One of my friends commented the service was a little slow. When our entrees did arrive, they were big portions. The French Dip had a lot of beef and it was 2 large halves. The clubhouse sandwich was loaded with roast turkey and a friend commented how she would fit it in her mouth! My chicken pita was the right size and I was able to finish it off without leftovers. It was a bit messy with the tzatski sauce but very tasty. The sandwiches came with a side including soup, fries, mashed potatoes and roast potatoes. I had the roast potatoes and it was 3 halves that had dill, and lemon flavoured. I didn't like them as much as my friend's homemade fries which were delicious. The soup bowl was huge, more like a cereal bowl. Just about everyone got half their sandwich/meal to go because it was too much. My friend commented they serve American sized portions here and I would definitely agree! The price of our sandwiches were very reasonable in the $13-$16 range. I will definitely be back again to try something else and enjoy it for 2 meals! They may also open a patio in the future too.

What a great spot hidden behind a light store and beside the RBC in mayfield commons. My coworkers and I went here for lunch recently and we were all pleasantly surprised! There is a restaurant side and a bar side. We sat on the restaurant side since we were on the clock. It's an open space with lots of lighting. The bathrooms are really nice and clean too! Our server was friendly and although it's a causal place, the fact that she was wearing a hoodie threw me off. I didn't think it was that causal, it kinda took the niceness of the place down a bit. The other servers were dressed nicely. But I digress.... the menu has a Greek feel to it with a variety of other cuisine choices like club house sandwiches and steaks etc. I ordered the chicken souvlaki pita and fries. My friends ordered the beef dip sandwich and the chicken club. We all loved our meals. I was disappointed that cheese didn't come on my pita as a standard ingredient. I had to pay $2.50 to get a small amount of feta added. But there's nothing betta than feta so I had to do it. Mine wasn't hot but I'm not sure if it was supposed to be. Anyway...the fries were amazing. Loved the texture and flavour, home fries with skin on. Yummy! Both my friends raved about their meals. Big portions and each meal under 20$. Will definitely eat here again!

My girlfriend, Cynthia, is a Philipina who grew up in Canada - she always stresses how pleasantly the ladies at the Polonia Deli treat her. I am a Canadian-Polish who is proudly Canadian, yet I would never tolerate any signs of ugliness towards non-Polish clients at that store. I go there often enough to assure any one who'd ask me that the clients who are not of Polish extraction are treated very politely, as they should be. Yes, the store sometimes turns into a little agora of Polish gossip and friendly banter, but this is quite common: all these small "ethnic" stores are alike, be it African, German, Greek, Indian, Italian, Pakistani - you name it. As for the products sold there: We have never experienced any problems. We do not eat pork so I cannot vouch for their pork-based cold cuts, yet they have chicken and turkey items, which are always fresh and excellent. We also like their preserves, pierogi (pierogi is already plural, no need to say "pierogies" :-) ), and yummy chocolate products. It is a great little store that could. Cynthia and I recommend it wholeheartedly!

The house made pizza dough is cooked perfectly by the way! And we also got the feature pizza. Nice clean bathrooms near the back of the store, plenty of parking out front. It still feels welcoming like the smaller store layouts with how they designed extra areas to display items. Smartly located north of Greenland Garden Centre, the hospital and the newer shopping common in Emerald Drive & Cloverbar Road. Easy to access going on and off Yellowhead from this location and plenty of room for whatever vehicle size you have. Handicap (several stalls) is right up along the building and not mixed amongst other parking spots. I need to applaud the staff. I've always thought the Italian Centre has friendly and helpful staff but tonight they were incredibly thoughtful. For someone like myself that is mobility limited, I use what I know at that time is going to give me the least amount of pain while shopping (that's 9 out of 10 times a shopping basket). Not only did the cashier bag the groceries well enough for me to carry with one hand, but while she was doing that, she asked another to grab me a cart. Both noticing my cane and how many bags I was about to try and carry did that favour before my shopping order was finished being scanned. I was very impressed she went a step further and offered to assist with the remaining groceries I was yet to load when she spotted I was still in the parking lot (colder weather means I move slower). This is definitely a first for me to experience that at an Italian Centre. Greatly appreciated as reaching into the cart for unbagged items is sometimes tricky for me (pumpkin was the culprit tonight). The layout of this place left me feeling impressed from the spacing of the aisles and the thought that went behind allowing extra room where there most likely would be more people gathered waiting (like at the deli). With the amount of items in there, I'm confident there was a lot more specialty items than at other locations. Even the kitchenwares was displayed in a such a way along the windows that I could actually see what was all there (and reach it easier if I did want to buy anything from an assortment of spoons, rolling pins, pans, pasta press, coffee perks and even icing applicators). I wasn't surprised to see they had a very large layout for all the vinaigrette and olive oil but the way it's showcased makes you feel like you're shopping in a wine store but you're definitely not. As directly to the right there's a very large display of cheese rounds attractively lit beside the deli. The deli and bakery counters seem longer than at the other locations (or maybe it's because again it's very well lit in key areas?). Definitely lots of choices for packaged or freshly cut meat and cheeses. The bakery area probably took me the longest in the store. As I needed to narrow down the options (as there's so many wonderful looking desserts!). Spinelli's café that has its own entrance and looks like during this time it is kept separate from the grocery area with the rope barrier. Looks like a generous amount of tables and next time I'll go earlier with the thought to check out that side too. Overall, The store impressed me. It's definitely worth the extra bit of driving time home if you're out that way already for other things or in need of a place to visit friends and grab a good coffee.
