    The beautiful ceiling.

    This is a visit to an old friend's you've never met, not a restaurant. At first glance it is a small and humble place with seating for maybe 30 people not including the patio. The ceiling is adorned with sprawling vines and white lights. Colours of yellow, white and blue are the palette for the decor. I was there for a special birthday dinner, party of 12. We were seated together and the menu was set. For the next 2 hours the lovely waitress and one of the owners, Marie, brought us appetizer after appetizer. She quickly removed dirty dishes and freshened our drinks. The night started with warm bread, Homous and Tzatziki followed by Greek salad. Then they brought out the hot appetizers: Saganaki Greek Cheese, Dolmades, Keftedes and Loukaniko. I only ate the bread and Homous however my family was raving about all of it especially the Saganaki Greek Cheese. For the main dishes we were served Roast Lamb Kleftiko and Chicken Souvlaki with vegetables, roast potatoes, rice and Tzatziki. The potatoes were moist with a wonderful lemon flavour. Many members of my family were not fans of lamb. However, after trying it they loved it. As for vegan options I was really limited here. But the service was amazing. The couple who owns this place are warm and sincere. The experience alone was worth eating a lot of potatoes and bread.

    I felt like I was in Greece! We sat outside on the beautiful patio, and our server (the owner) was so amazing and she brought us freshly made baklava! The food was incredible and so fresh. Will definitely be returning.

    Greeted quickly by the friendly server who offered a choice of seats. Ambient music is charming and culturally appropriate. Ordered the Saganaki which came at a decent time. Gooey and delicious, delightfully decadent. Rack of lamb took about 30 minutes to arrive, smelled quite delicious. A little overcooked, but the flavour was on point. The accoutrements were well flavoured. Easily the best side of carrots I've ever had. The homemade tzatziki was creamy and a perfect accompaniment to the well seasoned potatoes. When I mentioned to the owner that the lamb was a little overdone, the chef came out and spoke with me about it. Seemed very kind, honestly wanted to make sure we were satisfied.

    Delicious food and friendly owners. Prices are pretty steep but you can taste the quality in the food. Everything tasted fresh and well seasoned. We were the last ones left in the restaurant and the owners decided to close early. Felt a bit rushed but understandable on a slow night for a family run business. Business owners don't get much rest so we didn't mind wrapping up early

    Good find for Greek food in a cozy restaurant with beautiful decor. Seated immediately on a Friday night, slightly before the dinner rush. Service was quick and to the point, the menu included many traditional options- unfortunately the moussaka was unavailable at this time. The food came out in a timely manner and our server was attentive to our enjoyment of our meals. Overall good food and a great environment. A little pricey, however seemed fair given that this is a intimate family run restaurant. Would eat here again.

    If you'd like some great authentic Greek food come here. This little family gem is a great find. But if you're coming on the weekend phone ahead, not to be disappointed or turned away because they're too busy.

    It's a family run restaurant and every person that walks through that door gets treated like family. It was like we walked in to someone's home and had dinner. Everything was delicious and portions are huge!

    Woah this place is fantastic, beautiful atmosphere and lovely decor. Highly recommend for a date if you don't mind the heavy prices

The food was just amazing. We started with the hummus and pita, and then I tried the Psari Paki! Both were delicious! However, it was the dessert that really stole the show for me. The owner/chef makes the desserts fresh daily and they are true Greek desserts! I loved them! They were called Ekmek and Galacto Buriko - pastries with custard, honey, almonds, etc. OMG they were heavenly. I would come back to this place for the desserts alone. The service was awesome. We came on a Sunday and had a friendly server who had been working there for many years! So she knew all the details and ins/outs of what we were ordering. She gave us tonnes of recommendations as well! 10/10 experience - I would recommend this spot to anyone interested in trying some of the Greek restaurants in YEG.

It was very over cooked like the scrapings off the bottom of a burnt pot roast. Tough, dried out and chopped up in pieces. Some at our table ordered the rack of lamb but I noticed the lamb was not all finished. The lamb was all overcooked! On top of that, it came with a side of mashed potatoes - not at all Greek style! The calamari I ordered was plentiful but lots of batter with not much flavor except for the yogurt (which was supposed to be tzatziki) on the side and some onion. The entertainment with the Belly Dancer was amusing. The service was exceptional from our waitress and kept everyone happy with quick service and smiles. The Waitress and Belly Dancer may have saved a couple stars for Yiannis food tonight! My wife's prawn saganaki was served in a small bowl, not a lot of sauce and not a whiff of ouzo. Pretty small serving, compared to previously ordering the same item. The order of Greek potatoes turned out to be 1.5 boiled potatoes cut in a few pieces with a slice of lemon and leaky yogurt (again, meant to be tzatziki). Pretty sure this is not how Greek potatoes are done.     Yiannis Taverna has been a longtime fixture in Old Strathcona for as long as I can remember. They…read moreopened back in 1990, proving that their traditional Greek cuisine - 35 years strong - is a reliable mainstay, withstanding decades on the vibrant and ever-evolving Whyte Ave. It's been a hot minute since my last visit and I figured that it was due time. They were named Best Mediterranean Restaurant 2021 in the Edmonton Journal and this was enough to stoke my interest. A reservation is best, especially on a warm summer evening when their large garage-front doors are open to the outside air. Parking can be tricky on Whyte but with some luck you might grab a spot out front. I visited on a Saturday evening and despite my reservation, I was still unable to snag a coveted patio table beneath their signature blue and white awning. There was an empty table near the patio that they also wouldn't let me occupy because it was "already reserved." (Didn't I have a reservation?) I settled on a spot further inside the dining room, lovely nonetheless. The dining area is quite large, occupying two levels. Full of original exposed brick and beautiful painted murals, the space is designed to embody the feeling of sitting in a Greek taverna. The most striking element of decor is certainly the wall of glowing kako mati, or evil eyes, used to protect against negative energy. I had heard that traditional dancers entertain on Saturday evenings but no such dancers appeared. Maybe I was dining too early in the night? To start my visit, I was looking for a summery cocktail that would match the Greek feast that I was prepared to enjoy. Between the Ouzo Lemonade and the Aegean Fizz (Greek brandy, Cointreau, lemon, soda - $14.00), I chose the latter. This drink succeeded at being a fun effervescent summertime cocktail, however it was very boozy. I had a difficult time finishing it because the alcohol was quite strong. The menu is ideally crafted for sharing and in Greek tradition you can imagine large families feasting together over plentiful platters of various foods. This exact spirit is captured in Yiannis' Mezethes menu, filled with an abundant selection of appetizers. Why try only a few when you can simply order the Mezethes Platter (Dip platter, Greek salad, dolmades, meatballs, spanakopita, and kalamari - $49.00) and taste them all? (Or at least a lot of different items.) The dip platter arrived first, followed by the second course of everything else later on. Consisting of Melitzano Salata (Roasted Eggplant Spread), Revithia (Hummus), and Taramosalata (Caviar Mousse), all served with pita bread, it was fun to dig into this dish and to sample each of the different flavours. The Melitzano Salata made with garlic and tahini was my favourite because I liked the rough texture and full-on garlic punch. The Revithia was fairly standard, made with garbanzos and tahini. And finally, the Taramosalata was quite exciting with its mayonnaise-like consistency, made with lemon and infused with oil. As a caviar mousse, this dip felt the most luxurious. The pita itself was nothing special and somewhat hard and dry. It could have been purchased at a grocery store, for all I knew. The rest of the Mezethes arrived on a big platter and consisted of many colourful items to explore. Served with an ample helping of Tzatziki (Cow's Milk Yogurt Dip) made with dill and garlic, it's the ketchup of Greek food! It goes with everything! I loved trying each and every item on the plate, inadvertently taking myself on a little Greek adventure through food. The Horiatiki Salata (Greek Salad) was very fresh, bursting with bright juicy tomatoes, English cucumbers, peppers, onions, and kalamata olives. (I was happy to find kalamata olives dotting every dish.) Adorned generously with creamy feta cheese, the salad was excellent. The Dolmades (Stuffed Grape Leaves) were a surprise! Stuffed with minced beef and rice, I often find them dry and unremarkable. However, at Yiannis the dolmades were full of juicy flavour and one of the best items on the plate! I never thought that I could be impressed with dolmades and here we are! The Keftedes (Yiayia's Meatballs) were a similar experience. Made with minced beef and onions, the meatballs were juicy, flavourful, and not at all dry. Yiayia knows what she's doing! (But of course she does.) The Spanakopita (Spinach & Cheese Pie) is another dish that I often find underwhelming in other restaurants. Not so at Yiannis! Light phyllo pastry was wrapped around fresh baby spinach, dill, and creamy feta, creating a delectable bite. Maybe some of the best spanakopita that I've ever had! Finally, the platter included Kalamarakia (Crispy Squid) served with diced onion and tzatziki. I found the crunchy batter to be really heavy-handed and it was difficult to tell if there was any squid within each bite at all.
