We came in late on Saturday but were still served fresh brisket (daughter's choice), pulled pork on a bun (granddaughter) and my fav, ribs. All of these were excellent. Coming from the great bbq state of Texas, I can without a doubt recommend this BBQ. We were the only ones in the restaurant, so it was quiet. A few more takeouts were ordered while we were there. I had never been here before, but I'd heard great things. We went as a work crew, and we were hungry! Upon entering the restaurant, you're greeted with the smell of smoked meats, and it's like heaven! I ordered the brisket and sausage combo, with Mac and Cheese, and potato salad as well as jalapeño cheddar cornbread. First off; the brisket was incredibly tender, and super juicy! Amazing! The sausage tasted smoked, yet still had a snap to it. I was already in a food coma. The Mac and cheese is incredible, and I will get this again! The potato salad was decent, not good not bad! I had no idea this place existed in Nisku and was pleasantly surprised to try it out. Everything is made in house, including a huge range of sauces - there's a list on the wall of what each one is, but you can try a little bit of everything if you wanted! Lots of choices for sides and meats and it's decent value for the pricing. I found a few things to be a bit dry or the flavour wasn't super pronounced (maybe needs more rub on it?) but it was all a-ok. The best part was the service - SO nice and helpful, especially for a first timer like me. Loved watching their interactions with their regular customers but also that they were just as friendly to people like us who they have never met before. Felt super sincere and welcoming. We went on the advisement of a friend, he had raved about how good it was. Now, to be fair it was alright - let me explain: Service 5***** stars. Food Portions 5*****stars. Flavors 3*** stars. Many people love spice, and that's cool, neither of us are fans of spicy mac & cheese. The consistency of the mac & cheese, and the cheesiness was top notch, just take down the spice and we'd be good. The coleslaw was alright, but not refreshing, kind of laden with cream sauce. The chicken was ok, the rub was good so thank goodness for the skin. The cornbread was normal cornbread, it says cheddar, but you can't taste it. The honey butter that is upcoming (we were given a sampler) and it was SO GOOD on the cornbread, kind of saved it. Hubby said the beef was alright, the pickle soup was okay. Drinks except sweet tea are non-refillable, so if you like refillable then you won't find that here. I have trouble knocking this place because the service was EXCELLENT and the people super friendly. I recommend giving it a try as everyone is different, and you might love the spice. Take it from someone who isn't a big BBQ restaurant fan...the pulled pork and the beef brisket were fabulous! Really enjoyed getting to sample all the sauces as well. I got beans, coleslaw and corn as sides, and they were just mediocre in my opinion. They weren't bad, but I'd definitely try something else next time. Damn good value for bbq. Why should I say any more than that? Because I can steer you in the right direction because I know good bbq. The place feels like a southern bbq joint with a covered patio by the parking lot and music coming from all sides. I got the 3 meat plate that comes with 2 sides. I got the brisket (these guys nailed the brisket, it was moist, had a perfect hang and was nice and beefy and tender.), the sausage.... this tasted home made. It was excellent and packed with flavor. The ribs I'd probably pass on and get the chicken or pulled pork next time... they were good but the other 2 meats outshone them by a mile. For sides I got the mac and cheese and beans, both were excellent. I rarely get a drink when I go out but the lady behind the counter very politely kept demanding to "wet my whistle" and got me a glass of water, it was pretty friendly and funny so I obliged. I had a friend help me finish this mountain of food and I paid for his lunch special. All in lunch was only $39!!! Last week at a rib fest I paid that much for a rack of ribs 2 sides! I find it difficult to find an authentic southern BBQ place in these parts, but Cookshack does a pretty good job. The decor is perfect... Looks like an authentic BBQ joint. Picnic table cloths, big rolls of paper towel, and the food is served on a tray. Yup, that's what I like to see! The prices are excellent (finally!!). One meat with 2 sides starting at $13.50, 2 meats for $18, and 3 for $22. This was refreshing to see, as some places in e-town charge $20 for one meat selection. So props to this place for being reasonable! Onto the food! We ordered the brisket, chicken, and pulled pork. If I compare only to other barbecue places in Edmonton, it's great. But man, I just can't seem to find much for amazing brisket around here, and I unfortunately I don't classify it as amazing. It's okay though. The sides we had were the mac'n'cheese, smashed potatoes, and cream corn. Oh and the jalepeno cornbread. All sides were tasty, but I most enjoyed the cornbread. They also have an abundance of sauces... 7 different flavours! Overall, it's a respectable place. If I compare it to all the BBQ places I've been to in the states, this is not a 4 star place. However, compared to what we have around here, it deserves the 4. I think they would do very well if they opened for supper and not just lunch. read more

Great food that is all smoked daily in house, they even make the sauces themselves. Portions are generous so don't be scared by the prices. They offer 1,2 or 3 meat servings and one meat is plenty for the average guy. Give it a try, best food I have found working in Nisku for over 6 years. Authentic BBQ place. Maybe the best in Alberta. Reminds me of the BBQ houses down south in Louisiana or Tennessee. Sauces are varied and each one brings a unique flavour to the excellent smoked meat. Best place to eat in Nisku in my opinion, I travel out here for work about once a month. You get a choice of 1, 2 or 3 meats and 2 sides. I had the beef brisket. You get 2 nice slices. Beef brisket is tender and juicy but eat it while it's hot. I chose the kale salad and the cream of corn for my sides. The kale salad is fresh and light, goes well with the tasty meat. The cream of corn is warm and delicious. I was full with just the one meat already. The ladies also provide fast and friendly service. Make sure you get the free sauces to go with your meat, they have mixes of horseradish, BBQ and hot sauces to try! I would highly recommend Cookshack BBQ if you are out here for work this way and want some quality food. read more

The brisket was cooked well, very soft and flavourful. Other than that, it's a dive. It's over priced for what you get... -and I mean you don't even get a plate (served on wax paper on a tray). It's a dim lit cafeteria style self serve eatery, and don't be surprised if you find a servers hair in your corn meal (I did and it was gross). Maybe that's why they keep it dim lit. (?) The other people that rate this place high must have very low standards and probably drive a 2001 Dodge Ram. read more

While the staff who work at Cookshack BBQ are absolutely lovely, the meats they serve could do with some improvement. The sausage is fine and I don't much care for brisket wherever I try it, so let's move on to the ribs. Now I don't know if this is some kind of local barbecue style, but the ribs at Cookshack BBQ, not unlike ribs served at That BBQ Place and Fired Up, have no bark on them and they only faintly taste of wood smoke. What's the point of stepping out for barbecued meats, then? In my experience, Canadians love to complain if ribs aren't "fall off the bone" tender, so that means boiling and/or steaming likely creep into the cooking process. Unfortunately, doing this seems to rob barbecued meats of their smoky flavour and it seems to inhibit or even prevent formation of the delicious bark of well-smoked ribs. I'm unlikely to return unless these folks learn a few tricks from real southern BBQ pitmasters. read more
