And they think it's some joke but if you want to go here with a group of friends for your birthday and there aren't options for everyone, you just won't go. Slows in Detroit (who Meat is copying) has great salads and vegetarian options so everyone feels welcome. Maybe it's like some mid-Michigan thing to be close-minded and backwards but it's not sexy. Went for lunch, sat outside. There are about 3 or 4 tables out there. Had a great sandwich with amazing fries for $9.50. Brisket was perfect, plenty of great sauces at your table for dipping fries/meat :) I don't mind dropping $10 on this sandwich, there were many side choices that were included. take note Fork in the Road, this is the correct way to run a hipster restaurant. I don't even know how to start my experience at this restaurant. Everyone had really hyped it up which made us excited to try it, but I will never go back. I ordered the chicken wings, which came out covered in small hair/fur. As I mentioned to the waiter that my chicken wings had hair on them he just casually said "ohhh it must jut be from the feathers on the chicken" which made me not order a new set and just left me leaving $50 down and hungry. A disinterested bartender has done an incredibly poor job of paying attention to people sitting only three feet away (there are only eight people currently at the bar!). It's taken way too long. Things have gone down hill drastically since they appeared on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I guess they figure that business is so good, that they can let the little things slide and it won't hurt their bottom line. If you are going there looking for one of their specials, don't bother because they'll most likely be out. And they don't tell you until after you've sat down. I guess they figure that since you've gone through the hassle of finding a parking spot and the usual long wait times, you won't leave if they don't have what you want. Meat used to be my go to BBQ joint, but not anymore. There are other BBQ places in the Lansing area with better food, easier parking and WAY less wait time. If you want great customer service, easy parking and awesome food, try Crossroads BBQ in Grand Ledge. They blow Meat away in EVERY category. I have to apologize in advance, I'm going to make a lot of comparisons to Podnah's in Portland, because it is the standard by which I judge BBQ, and the experience I have been trying to recreate since we moved here almost 4 years ago. I never liked brisket. My daddy made ribs, my brother made ribs, when I thought BBQ, I thought ribs. Pork, beef, didn't matter, just give me a bone to gnaw and I am a happy camper. My several year stint in Texas never did anything to change this particular obsession. The first time I tried brisket at Podnah's it wiped all thought of ribs from my mind forever. I have spent the last several years trying BBQ here and there, even branching out to Detroit and Chicago suburbs trying to find excellent BBQ. I have a rule: if I don't smell smoke I'm not eating. It seriously limits my choices in Michigan where many places seem to wind up the smoker once or twice a week tops. Meat is the first brisket I've had in 4 years that made me smile. If you have had brisket at Podnah's or the Texas hill country, you will be pleased, though perhaps not thrilled. It's well seasoned. It's tender. The fat is tender enough. But it's not Podnah's tender, and the brisket definitely isn't Podnah's juicy. I partly blame the paper in the bottom of the to go container which does an excellent job of keeping the juices from spilling all over you, but also of wicking juices out of the meat. The paper was soaked so clearly the juices were there to begin with. Personally I'll happily take messy instead of drier brisket, but I may be alone in that... Podnah's didn't put paper in the bottom of their to go containers. I'll have to eat in at Meat one of these days and compare, I expect as long as there isn't paper on their serving dishes it won't be a problem. I know Podnah's had to get specially trimmed brisket that leaves more of the fat cap (the standard in Texas hill country) so that could play a role too. Juiciness aside, the brisket made me happy enough to give up my plans to buy a smoker. My 4 years of longing have been relieved. With my brisket plate I got the creamed corn which is good, it seems like maybe they use some kind of thickener which makes it a bit sticky rather than creamy. But it's tasty stuff. Only critique is I'm not a fan of super spicy sides which the ones we got were, including the corn. I also got the Mac and cheese, which was also spicy, but good. It isn't great, I have family all through the south, the Mac and cheese is authentically southern, but not authentically great southern. But it's solid. My husband got the chopped pork meatwich with the BBQ pit beans. They were good, although apparently some of the beans were undercooked (not the small bite I tried) and again, they are pretty spicy. The pulled pork was a bit dry, I'm not sure if they trim the pork before smoking, I notice many reviewers here in Michigan complain about overly fatty meat, so maybe it's just a preference thing. That's fair enough. When in Rome and all. I'm not sure what sauces we got. Two tasted like they might be the coffee one, it was my favorite. The mustard was indeed spicy, very thick, but excellent. There was another that again I think we got two of, that tasted strongly of chili powder (though wasn't very spicy). Also they have AWESOME lemonade. Incredible. Fantastic. OMG good. Overall, I'm thrilled, I'll be back, probably relatively often (given the two hour drive) and I cried tears of happiness over my brisket, it was just what heart, soul, and taste buds needed. I've been to Meat 10+ times, and everytime I leave I think to myself, "man their food is good". Meat fries are the best! This would be a 5 star restaurant for sure if were only based on food. Unfortunately, everytime I arrive I get crammed into their little doorway, often filled with lots of other people. Not a pleasant way to start. The dinning area isn't very large also. They recently went through renovation which included a nice bar, but notichore seating. Not always a pleasant experience trying to eat there. Don't go their in the evening!!! Maybe we got them on a bad day, but the bbq and sides (mac & cheese, potato salad, and coleslaw) were very underwhelming and needed more seasoning. The meat fries were massive and decent, but the meat lacked flavor and was a bit dry. The brisket sandwich was dry and needed more salt. The pulled pork was average. The highlights of this place were definitely the smoked wings and the sauces at the table. I will definitely come back to try them again. We have so few really good restaurants in town--so I was thrilled to have a wonderful meal at Meat. I ordered the chopped beef brisket with blue cheese potato salad and buffalo fries. Holy crap! Each bite was better than the next. The plate came with cornbread, which was just perfect with the brisket. The portions are large, and I've got enough left over for lunch today. I paired it with Founder's Red Rye--their craft beer selection is good, and they've also got a full bar. My dining companion had the macaroni and cheese with pulled pork and mushrooms. The menu warned there would be a wait, because each M&C is made to order... but the meal arrived very quickly. As with mine, his dish was wonderful and he had enough left over for TWO lunches! We opted to sit at the bar, and the bartender was very attentive and friendly. We were glad to have arrived early (around 5pm), because when we left at 6-ish it was really getting busy (and on a Sunday night!). This place was fantastic! My girlfriend and I wandered in on a whim at about 4pm on a Saturday. It's a good thing we left early because we got one of the last tables there. By the way, we completely missed the "please wait to be seated" sign and sat ourselves, but the waitress was totally cool about it since there wasn't a line or anything. First, a couple things were already sold out that early. We ended up splitting a full rack of ribs and got mac & cheese as sides and it was all just absolutely fantastic. The place is a little tight space-wise but the staff seemed pretty good at managing it. Even if the service had been terrible, which it wasn't, the food would make up for it. The standard has been set for BBQ for me; I will compare everything else to Meat. The house-made sauces were also great. Even the ones I didn't really like, you could tell that they would be delicious for someone more into those flavors. My favorite was the spicy garlic one. We couldn't even finish the ribs and they were still just as good warmed up in the oven the next day. Also, the cat dug the remnants out of the garbage and ate them until he threw up, so that's probably a pretty good sign. I highly recommend this place but get there early and be prepared for your choice possibly being sold out! read more

My cousins brought me here while I was visiting town. Leave it to the Midwest to bring the best Mac and cheese I've ever had. Tried some brisket off my cousin's plate and it was super flavorful and tender. Shared the trailer park bruschetta as an appetizer and that was the standout. The crispness in the fried onions and potato skins against the creaminess of the pimento cheese and potato, the salty grease factor from the chorizo, the slight kick from the jalapeño - it was a perfect marriage of flavors and textures. Please don't take it off the menu! I also had the chingorilla sandwich with pulled pork, sides of fries and Mac. The fries were seasoned and prepared well - crisp and salty enough that you don't need sauce or ketchup. The sandwich was a great combo - I was a big fan of their pimento cheese and the pineapple added a great sweetness to it. Loved the bun it was on and the pork itself was tender and moist. Meats is our favorite restaurant in Old Town. Great location. Nestled between locally-owned shops, near the river. Outdoor seating in front. Inside, the place is very small with a descent size bar. TV's in the bar can also be seen from the dining area. The place is usually packed and you'll probably have to wait for a table. Lunch time isn't quite as busy. Their meats are AMAZING! My husband and I usually split something and even then, can't finish it all. Tender, flavorful, plentiful. Also, PLENTY of delicious BBQ sauces to sample. Good sides to choose from. Great food! Awful service/ management. It took over 40 minutes to get a seat, despite having three open tables that needed to be cleared. I can't honestly blame the waiters for our lack of service, because the restaurant was obviously understaffed when I visited- a management problem. Ok - to be fair - we visited this place an hour before an extended closing. But still, there was no excuse for the food we were served. I had a rack of ribs. It was very dry. Their sides were cold and looked like they had been sitting around for a long time. The beer was flat and served in glasses that were meant for water - not beer. The service was fantastic. Came back with a group from work. We arrived a little before noon (good idea) and were able to get a table for 7. This was the first time most of us had been back since the renovation. I have to say, the place looks great! Much larger and gives the appearance of a place that plans to stay awhile. Good looking bar and a couple TVs round out the good food and service. i had the pulled pork sandwich with homemade chips. The sandwich was very tall, lots of pork and very little fat. Usually with pulled pork you are fishing out a fatty bite here and there and i don't think I did that once with this sandwich. touch of coleslaw and pickles to round it out. Ordered extra side of beans, they were only okay to tell you the truth. Service was really great. Attentive waiter but not overly bothersome. Took the time to explain the sauces and was on the money with refills and food delivery. One thing i might recommend of the establishment is to label the sauces. read more

Review originally from Sept 2014. I understand the negatives have gotten better, mostly when they expanded. Poor Management. I agree with a prior reviewer. We went, the food was good, the servers were doing their best, they were overworked, but this place is so poorly run. The service, was essentially, very bad, but I don't blame any of the employees, they were working their butts off in a constant state of motion. I blame the management. They need to hire more people, specifically a host or hostess, and bussers. The waitstaff try to do all three and service suffers. I watched a table sit, unbussed, for 20 minutes while people were waiting to be seated. That is plain unacceptable. Its a small place, hire one person, even if you paid them $15 an hour you'd make more money because you'd get people in and out faster. Then there is the kitchen, they frequently run out of food, and did the night we were there. I understand running out of slow smoked ribs, but later people were coming by asking about just having a beer or something and they were able to sit and drink, but why not offer them a burger? The guy (owner?) told them he had no food for them, but ground beef was on the menu so... did you run out of hamburger meat? I guess perhaps he went to the Eric Cartman school of business, tell everyone they can't have something and they'll want it. And maybe he doesn't care that his front of the house is so inefficiently run, he runs out of food anyways, who cares if he doesn't get tables turned around quickly? I don't know how much his rent is I guess, but maybe he is happy as is. He'd probably make a ton more money with some management changes though. The food? The food was good. The ribs (spare ribs) were large and meaty, although maybe above average connective tissue and cartilage. The meat fries, a side, were a meal themselves and very good. If I went back I might just get them. Even the fries portion of the platter (essentially a poutine) were really good, perfectly seasoned, crispy, just all around good. Highly recommended. Lots of different bbq sauces to try, liked most of them, two especially so. Also, the front door was broken, left constantly flapping in the wind, I had to close it a lot, a $10 door closer from Home Depot would fix that. I highly recommend the owner enrolling in MSU's hospitality management major, his restaurant could be very successful, the concept is good, the food is good, its just... so poorly executed. I adore the earnest effort and care associated with providing epic food this establishment truly provides. First, I would like to begin with the atmosphere. You can smell the smoked meats from miles away. After parking, leaving the car and approaching the front door, you realize this establishment's emanating smell is much larger than the actual restaurant. This is a good thing as I love intimate little jewels. It's a tiny, closely-situated seating environment that houses a little over 20 people with their indoor seating (outdoor seating is available). Be prepared to get to know your neighbors. That being said, the service was friendly and very knowledgeable with the questions we posed. Myself, being a Kentucky girl, and one of my eating companions, a Texas native, we had several questions regarding the cuisine. Now down to the food: The variations in sauces provided with the 'dine-in' experience is similar to taking a road tour across the various barbecue hubs of this great country. These include the vinegar style sauce from KY, the tomato and vinegar sweet based sauce from St. Louis, mustard sauce from SC, and the ketchup based sauce from TX. (There may have been one more option) All of the sauces were spot on(!) so that each region was well represented. I am a Kentucky girl and ate dinner with a Texas native. We both agreed the brisket was dry, yet the ribs were worth a revisit. The side options were refreshingly complementary to the meats. Came here for a late lunch in late August and were quite pleased. It was the same weekend as the Pride festival, so we had a 20 minute or so wait at 3:15, go figure! But the six of us were seated, order placed, and anticipation started. Service gets a solid 5 - Nicky was very attentive, brought over drinks and refills while waiting. Food a solid 5 also, surpassed expectations. Food came out in good time considering how busy they were. The meat? Excellent. I had the three way with brisket, turkey and pork; they had run out of hot links, alas. Wife and daughter shared a slab of ribs, very tender and meaty. Fries, slaw and beans were great. Then there was the Mac n cheese - wow. Made to order, so throw in some shrooms bacon and onions and enjoy! It is plenty rich and cheesy, just the thing. Very busy place. We got here early on a Friday and it was packed. It's not a big restaurant. But we only waited about 5 minutes. It's also kind of noisy so if you have sensitive hearing, this might not be the place for you. Also, because of the size, do not be picky about where you are sitting. The showcase is the food, trust me. Awesome dinner and lots of it! This reminded me a lot of the BBQ I've had in Austin, TX. Smoky, tender deliciousness. Lots of extra sauce in a variety of flavors (labels on the bottles would be helpful, staff). We started with the nachos -- really good, had to take half home. I had the 2 meat plate with smoked turkey and chopped brisket. It melted in my mouth! I had two sides with that -- creamed corn which was homemade I think, not the canned stuff. The cole slaw was average -- not a lot of flavor unfortunately. The corn bread muffin is more like a cupcake and a nice way to balance out the spiciness of the meal. Again, I took half of my meal home. My husband had the ribs, fries and cole slaw and also took half of his meal home. Service was good and attentive. One quibble (minor) -- the bathroom could be checked once in awhile. It wasn't dirty, but lots of bits of paper towel on the floor. A quick sweep every few hours wouldn't hurt. Big fan of the fatty brisket, the smoked turkey, and all of the potato products (including the meat mountain). This place can get really busy at lunchtime during the week, and it's popular enough that they still run out of certain meats if it's been a busy day, so go earlier if you can. When I've sat outside on the patio and asked for the draft list, I've gotten mixed reactions: sometimes I'll be pleasantly surprised when a server passes me a written list of the current draft, but I've also been told "I don't know, go look inside for yourself." I love southwest BBQ. I LOVE MEAT. The menu is simple, and described by the name of the joint! Everything is cooked with TLC and is just the way it is supposed to be. My only complaint with the restaurant has been getting in. Before they expanded it wasn't unusual to wait an hour or more for a table. They want everything fresh (smoked daily) so they often run out of ribs just because they are so damned good! Parking can be challenging, but it's worth the hassle. Today was the fifth time I have eaten at Meat and it was much different than the previous 4. Meat was a busy, original for our area, restaurant. It was small with it's charm, but very busy. The word got out and you had to be careful when you came in or you could wait for over an hour for a table! It was worth it! Now they have expanded and added a bar. It's still busy, but the charm is gone. At 3:00 pm, Saturday afternoon, is it necessary to crank death metal music in the restaurant? The ambience is gone. I might as well sit at a sports bar and forget about any conversation with my wife. We have decided we love the food. The menu has not changed too much. First time really walking around old town lansing...my fiance and I saw this place and our stomachs immediately started growling! I haven't seen another hole-in-the-wall bbq place in the lansing area so I was stoked! I will say that the food was wonderful. If you're looking for slathered, moist pulled pork you won't find it...you sauce it yourself. Howeve, that's ok becuase they make 4 different sauces from scratch that are pretty tasty. Here are the reasons why they get 3 stars instead of 4 or 5: 1. If you don't read the small sign on the door that says "wait to be seated" you may be tempted to seat yourself and it can be confusing, especially since the place is super tiny! I think they only have about 10 tables in there. 2. By the time we were finishing our meal there were only two other tables of people. Even though things were slow our server didn't bring our check for quite some time. We were clearly finished (ate everything except a side dish I wanted to take home!) and sitting quietly. The best part is that there were 4 staff members standing up at the bar chatting and laughing the entire time...yet nobody could have come and taken care of us or at least let our server know we were through? Very frustrating and highly unprofessional. 3. All sandwiches come with 1 side and 1 pickle. You may request pickles and jalapenos on your sandiwh in addition. We both ordered sandwiches (adamizer brisket sandwich and classic pulled pork) and we both did NOT receive a pickle. 4. The side I chose was "seasonal vegetables". In my mind I'm picturing a fresh vegetable medley of some sort. Nope. I was presented with a dish of creamed corn chowder. Even though it was absolutely delicious it was not what I was expecting in any way. It was also full of milk products...and I am lactose intolerant...which is why I ordered vegetables. I can usually take lactase tablets but didn't have any on me, which is why I took the corn home with me. The wiatress should have specified what I was getting exactly because it wasn't vegetables. It was a bowl of corn chowder. 5. I know this isn't really their fault, but since it is so small and there isn't a double set of doors it was VERY drafty whenever someone entered or exited. Of course we sat literally right next to the door, and had to eat with our coats on our laps. Just disappointing; I don't really know what they can do about that. 6. They were out of the bourbon baked beans and the smoked turkey. I had really wanted to try the baked beans, so that was a bummer! Not a huge issue for me, I know they're new and probably trying to figure out how much to make each day (and I'd rather them not have to throw food out!) but it was just a slight let-down. 7. The kansas city sauce and the magic sauce were almost identical...and I have a very sensitive palate. Maybe we accidentally got 2 of the same one in our basket? Not sure, but there wasn't much of a difference. All in all, food was really tasty. The meat could have been a bit more moist but it was incredibly tender. Lovely location, great laid back, rock-n-roll atmosphere that worked well with the menu. Our waitress was friendly, but MIA even though it wasn't busy. My husband and I stumbled upon this place while we were driving around looking for somewhere to eat. I'd just said I couldn't believe Lansing doesn't have a Famous Dave's BBQ restaurant. After trying this place we won't be driving to Flint for Famous Daves so much. This place is GREAT. We ordered the three meats dinner and a half rack of ribs dinner. The ribs were the meatiest ribs I'd ever had and really tender and with a good smokey flavor. The brisket was plenteous and also had great flavor. The Mac and Cheese was great...although we got two sides of it and one was much more dried out than the other. The beans were also smokey and good. And if you like blue cheese the pototo salad was good. My husband loved the corn casserole made with cream cheese and it had some good kick to it. For me the things I would like to see change is that for me all the BBQ sauces were too spicy and that they RUN OUT of food and I'd also like to see them add cornbread. I can take a little spice but they were all just too hot for me, even the mildest one. There were three to choose from. One regular(this one was the one I attempted to eat), one mustard, and one we were told was spicy. I hope they start offering a truly mild BBQ. And we got there at 4:30 and he said we were lucky that they still had all their meats and that they usually run out! The ribs were almost done he said and we only waited 10 minutes for them(worth the wait)....but as we were still eating people ordering after us were told they were OUT Of ribs...seems they make very little of them. And the wings sold out while we were there too and we left at around 5:30..... This place is GREAT but get there early or you may not eat what you'd like. Wow we literally DEVORED our lunch. We showed up at 2pm for lunch and there was an hour wait! The place is small and the food is good...so we decided to wait it out. It was my first time as the hubs and I were visiting his parents for Easter weekend. We'd come to the area to stop in a few antique shops (my fav) and a late lunch. Finally seated around 3:10 we wanted to order everything on the menu. The hubs and I split the full nachos (huge!) and so do the in-laws. We also ordered a side of mac-n-cheese because we heard they were 4th in the state and some spicy cream corn. Also a basket of fried pickle strings. We literally ate it all! It was just so good. I highly recommend it all! Though as a Southern girl, the cream corn...while yum...was not southern cream corn so that was a little off for me. Oh! And we also saw an 18 INCH hamburger.
